Selmer Mourns Local couple killed as car crashes through festival By Janet Rail Publisher

Our community is torn with grief over the loss of a local couple after a car broke through a barricade during the Rockabilly Highway Revival Festival in downtown Selmer last Saturday. Officials are still unclear what exactly caused the elderly driver to plow through the barricade into a crowded festival on Saturday; killing two people and putting hundreds of others in danger. Police protection was handled by the Selmer Police Department, however the Tennessee Highway Patrol conducted the investigation upon request of the Selmer Police Chief Neal Burks said Lt. Barry Siler. Siler stated that the cause of the accident was still under investigation. When asked about festival security, Siler said, “We often assist with traffic control and security at festivals across the state but were not asked by (Selmer Chief Burks) to assist in this festival.” McNairy County Sheriff Guy Buck also said that no assistance was provided or requested for festival security from his department. Among the many witnesses, statements varied dependent upon who was standing where at the festival. At a press conference on Sunday, Lt. Brad Wilbanks of THP stated, “I've heard seven or eight different stories. We owe it to the families to get it right. It will take weeks to get this together, and we want to be able to answer any and all questions the families might have. That's what takes so long.” The festival came to a halt after Aaron Stamey, 91 and his wife, passenger, Lois M. Stamey, 86, of Hornsby struck a barricade and traveled through it into the crowded streets in their 1987 Crown Victoria, as they were traveling south on Court Avenue during the festival hitting an empty baby stroller that he carried on his grill before striking pedestrians Sherri King Duncan, 51, of Henderson and fiance Michael L. Johnson, 62, of Selmer at the intersection of Third Street. The vehicle continued south and hit a 1960 Chevrolet Impala in the car show and a 1979 Chevy pickup parked at the southern barricade by a local political candidate Rusty Coffman, running for state representative. The vehicle veered left to strike a 2009 Kawasaki mule driven by SPD Officer Matt Rickman who jumped off before the car struck it prior to Stamey's car coming to a final rest off the left side of the roadway near the railroad track. This tragedy was witnessed by countless citizens from different vantage points as the car traveled approximately an eighth of a mile through downtown Court Avenue. Most witnesses described the sound like a 'whoosh or whiz' as the vehicle appeared to travel so fast that it caught many off guard. Just minutes before Stamey drove through the barricade, the Selmer Fire Department drove a firetruck down Court Avenue to answer a call on a car fire just passed the railroad tracks outside the festival boundary. Had the firetruck not cleared many off

the avenue, the casualty count could have been far greater, yet, two innocent people are dead. The community remains devastated. Family and friends are grief stricken. (Even those of us in the news business are at a loss for words.) Aaron and Lois Stamey were treated and released at Magnolia Regional Health Center in Corinth, Miss. Johnson and Duncan are natives of McNairy County who shared the past few years together and were planning to wed this summer. They were killed instantly at the scene and transported to Shackelford Funeral Home prior to Memphis for autopsies. Johnson graduated from McNairy Central High in '71 and spent his entire life working on cars. He owned a hot rod shop in Corinth, Miss. “People knew him as a perfectionist. That was the reputation he built his business on. His clothes, hair and cars had to be perfect. Even in high school when mom would iron his clothes, he would often re-iron them. He was a hard worker, very honest and cars left his shop perfect,” said brother Jimmy Johnson. Johnson had built four or five of the cars in the show but did not bring one of his own. He lived in Eastview for many years prior to purchasing a home for the couple on Country Club Lane in Selmer. Johnson was a member of the Magnolia
