Local veterans prepare for Memorial Day

The American Legion Post 162 of Selmer placed new flags at McNairy County Courthouse on Armed Forces Day last Saturday. They were honored to have Leo Tull WWII veteran, Mrs. Tull and Selmer Mayor John Smith attending. Pictured are American Legion members Lynn Conley, Leo Tull, Charles Coleman, Billy Mullins, Bill Webster, Jim Pruitt, Harold Cox, Ted Miller and Mayor Smith. A Memorial Day program will be presented by the American Legion Post 162 of Selmer next Monday at the McNairy County Courthouse lawn at 10 a.m. The American Legion will welcome honored guests, Mr. and Mrs. Odus Matlock of Selmer. Mr. and Mrs. Matlock will place the Memorial Wreath, and Matlock, a WWII veteran, (or his representative) will speak. Post 162 will post the colors, rifle salute and taps.

28th Annual Buford Pusser Festival begins in Adamsville this Thursday (Staff Report) -- The 28th Buford Pusser Festival will be held in Adamsville beginning this Thursday. The first 100 law officers and their immediate families who visit the festival will receive a free corn dog and drink. That night there is a free concert at 6:30 p.m. performed by Steve Warren. The bus tour will take place Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. A charter bus will go to the ambush site where Pauline Pusser was killed and Buford was shot, the place where he died, all of those bad places on the Tennessee/Mississippi state line where the State Line Mob had their joints, and ends up at the courthouse, where Buford’s daughter Dwana Pusser Garrison furnishes lunch. Country music artists, Daryle Singletary and Bryan Moffitt Band, will perform free concerts Friday night. The 5K run begins at 8:30 a.m Saturday. The opening ceremony honors law enforcement officers that died in the line of duty and the Law Enforcement Officer of the Year, Sheriff David Clarke of Milwaukee, Wisc. is at 11 a.m. This year, the Tennessee Friends of NRA will be featuring very unique art pieces of Legendary Sheriff Buford Pusser at the festival. The pieces of art will include a picture of Sheriff Pusser, McNairy

County Sheriff Department Patch & Badge, a NRA Medallion, the bullet & casing fired from the Colt Cobra Revolver .38 caliber owned by Sheriff Pusser & a certificate of authenticity signed by his daughter Dwana Pusser. Some of the Artwork will be given to Dwana Pusser-Garrison and to the Buford Pusser Home & Museum. One outstanding and unique art piece will be featured & sold on the live auction at all Friends of NRA Banquets in Tennessee. In the past, the NRA has sold pieces of art at the Friends of NRA Events with bullets and casings. The past three art pieces that have sold featured the Smith & Wesson .45 caliber Schofield Revolver serial number 273 used by Outlaw Jesse James, the Gatling Gun in the Battle of San Juan Hill used by Teddy Roosevelt, and the Smith & Wesson Model 29 Revolver .44 caliber Magnum in the 1971 movie “Dirty Harry” by Clint Eastwood. “We’re excited about this very unique art piece for the Tennessee Friends of NRA of Legendary Sheriff Buford Passer. Tennova closed

A crew works to remove the Tennova sign from McNairy Regional Hospital. Tennova closed all remaining services at the hospital on May 17 at 11:59 p.m. Leading up to the closure, local leaders were working to find a way to keep the hospital open, but no solution has been made at this time to resume operations. Both McNairy County Mayor Ronnie Brooks and Selmer Mayor John Smith said that they will continue to work to find a way to reopen the hospital in the future. -Read future issues of the Independent Appeal for the latest developments and updates on this story.
