Schools seek bids on repairs, demolition, construction By Jeff Whitten Head News Writer

The McNairy County Board of Education voted to solicit bids on the Michie Elementary School roof, field house, demolition, removal and clean up of structures on the Adamsville and Selmer sites for new construction and to authorize hiring two new maintenance workers at a special called meeting last Thursday. The Michie field house bid package includes the building shell and floor slab, according to Supervisor of Maintenance Larry Smith. This bid package does not cover the inside walls, wiring and plumbing, Smith said. The state fire marshall has tentatively approved the construction. “There’s been an indication that a parent may do the plumbing, someone may do the wiring,” Smith said. “It’s going to look good,” said board Vice-Chair Jean Jones, who presided over the meeting in the absence of Chair Jarrell Stanfield. The project will be advertised two weeks in the paper. Bids will be cut off Nov. 18 and opened the following day. Sections of the Michie Elementary School roof in the area of the cafeteria and library will be re-roofed, according to Smith. The total area of the repairs is about 9,000 square feet. “It’s going to have to be done...one way or the other. If

we don’t, we’re going to have the same situation we had at McNairy Central,” Smith said. The roof will be a four-ply built up one, which is the same type on the rest of the schools and has a 20-year warranty, Smith said. The project will also include the replacement of three five-ton Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning units. One of the units has been taken off and capped. This is why one side of the cafeteria has been getting hot. The other unit has rusted and is causing the roof to leak, Smith said. “This unit, when we took it off the roof, the whole bottom was rusted out of it,” Smith said. There is a bad compressor on the unit that cools the library. The replacement of these units can be done in-house, Smith said. This can be done for around $15,000. Garrett Heating and Plumbing, which is replacing the chillers at Adamsville Junior/Senior High School and Selmer Middle School, estimated that the installation of the Michie HVACs would cost around $36,700 if done by an outside contractor.

The money for the repairs will either come from the capital outlay note previously approved by the County Commission or from the fund balance. Director of Schools John Prince noted that the fund balance (the sum of all past budget surpluses minus any deficits) has increased by $390,000 since June. “This is the only school in the county that doesn’t have a suspended ceiling over the cafeteria that I know of. That is another thing that I think needs to be addressed while we’re at it,” Smith said. Smith said that a suspended ceiling would help conserve energy and reduce heating and cooling costs. This will also allow the installation of roof drains. The roof repairs will extend the life of the roof for five or six years, Smith said. The board will also solicit bids on an asbestos study for the structures on the properties where new construction will occur in addition to demolition, removal and clean up. In addition to removing the structures, trees will also be cut where temporary parking lots are to be built.

Selmer voters head to the polls, voting on liquor, aldermen Staff Photo by Jeff Whitten

Selmer residents went to the polls last Tuesday to vote on three alderman seats as well as two separate liquor referendums. Six candidates are running for three atlarge seats on the Selmer Board of Aldermen in the election. Incumbents Paul Simpson and Edward Smith faced challengers Nicky Atkins, John C. Austin, J. T. Hawkins and Fred Yarbrough for the alderman seats. The third seat on the ballot was an open seat vacated by Alderman Chris Tull who did not file for re-election. Voters also considered two referendums to legalize liquor sales in both retail package stores and for consumption on premises (liquor by the drink). Results were released after press time. Halloween celebrations draw thousands to county last week Staff Photo

Last Saturday, thousands came out to celebrate this year’s Halloween in Selmer at the Halloween Street Party. The party moved to Selmer Middle School because of rain but it did not put a damper on the festivities. Party goers enjoyed live music, candy, free food, games and more. The party was sponsored by the City of Selmer, Selmer Parks and Recreation and the Independent Appeal. Despite the rain, the Downtown Selmer merchants went on with their plans for a downtown Trick or Treat on Halloween fortunately the rain stopped just before the 4 p.m. start time. Merchants expected a great turnout. Michie and Bethel Springs each held their own Halloween celebrations as well last Thursday and Friday respectively.
