McNairy County looks to hire new economic development director
Bethel hires Damien Blue as new officer
By Janet Rail & Jeff Whitten IA Staff
McNairy County will hire a new economic development director with the help of the Next Move Group with dual offices in St. Louis and New Orleans. “We interviewed three firms, two in person and one long distance. I am on the selection committee and felt like this group resonated with us. Not only are they proficient with finding the right person, but they can work with us in recruiting prospective clients,” said Robert Shackelford, Industrial Board Chairman. The guiding principle of the firm is creating jobs. Chad Chancellor, of New Orleans, has over ten years of successful economic development in four states and founded the company that strives to create opportunities for people to have good jobs close to home. Chancellor grew up in a singleparent home, not because his parents were divorced, but because his father left to do construction work during the week to return home on Fridays. “Every decision we make, every project we undertake, must pass our “Will It Help Create Jobs” litmus test. If we can create jobs we will do it, no matter the project,” said Chancellor. Alex Metzger, President, of St. Louis, has five years of experience. “Our core business is site selection for corporate clients. We offer services to develop targeted business plans for communities and target businesses they need to recruit. Executive searches, as we are doing here, are also a focus of our firm,” said Metzger. “We believe that economic development is a profession and we want to find real professionals to fill this job. Credentials vary from town to town, but we look for the best fit for each community. Here everyone seems to be positive and on the same page and have a similar way of thinking – they are focused on jobs. Believe it or not, some communities are not focused on jobs.” They had a two hour tour of the community. “Every community has a spec building but not every community has a 700,000 square foot building so you are not competing with many others out there,” said Metzger, referring to the old Masco Bath building. “You don’t find buildings like that sitting around empty. We saw buildings that were 20,000 feet to 700,000 feet and were made aware of a 200,000 square foot building in Bethel Springs this morning. There is no reason the county cannot land some jobs while working on its next industrial park,” said Chancellor. The group met with over 90 local leaders, business owners, and industry leaders earlier this week to gather information and get a feel for what type of candidate will best fit Mc-

The Town of Bethel Springs has voted to restore their police department with the hire of a new officer at last Monday’s monthly meeting. After a short period of discussion, the board voted to hire Damien Blue, a former Tennessee Highway Patrolman, TBI agent and Bradford, Tenn. Chief of Police, as the town’s new officer. Bethel Mayor Gary Bizzell Jr. said that the town needs police because the town is too large to rely solely on the sheriff’s department for coverage. “I’m really worried what is going to happen when we fix...Main Street,” Bizzell said. “Now we have people going 70 miles per hour down that road. When it is fixed, I’m worried that it will become the Autobahn.” The board looked at making another hire at the meeting for their open position of secretary. However, Bizzell suggested tabling the motion to hire Michelle Thompson at the meeting, but said that he would use his power as mayor to make a temporary hire this month and then allow the board to consider her hire in September. In other news, the board voted to amend the previous month’s minutes to reflect a portion of the minutes discussing Sherry Smith’s absence from the last meeting. The minutes said that she missed the meeting because of illness, but she said that she was not sick and wanted an amendment to reflect what Bizzell said. In the town’s sewer report, the town announced that they had to fix a lift pump at a cost of $12,386. Bizzell said that was a hit to the sewer budget, especially because the town is now down to just six replacement

The town also made two large expenditures at the meeting. The first dealt with the renovations to the town’s water tank. The board voted to accept a bid from American Tank Maintenance to renovate the tank at a cost of $18,000 per year for six years. The town also accepted a bid for $104,000 from Arrow Paving for milling Main Street. The town also said that they notified
the state comptroller’s office and are still working on their annual budget and Bizzell said that they hoped to have it finished soon. The board also announced that the community center events such as live music, wrestling and a magic show have been well attended, but more volunteers were needed to staff the events. Bizzell also announced the need for additional volunteers to help with yard clean-up for elderly residents. He said that recently more than 40 volunteers, mostly from First Baptist in Bethel came out and did clean-up. He also urged residents who need this service to contact city hall for help.
