Area schools close due to high absenteeism
INSIDE THIS WEEK
By Christen Coulon Managing Editor
Students were treated to a four-day weekend last Thursday and Friday after McNairy County Director of Schools John Prince announced on Feb. 4 that the schools would close for the rest of the week due to excessive absences due to illness as well as the threat of inclement weather last Thrusday morning. Bethel Springs Elementary School Principal Terry Moore said that his school was hit particularly hard by illness in the last week with more than 50 of his students absent each day with either with stomach virus and the flu before the closing. Moore said that the school’s janitorial staff spent the time cleaning surfaces and disinfecting to curtail illness going into this week.

“We have used Lysol spray and we used Clorox Bleach and they rubbed down the chairs with sanitary wipes, they cleaned table tops, they cleaned the floors, and the lockers down the front hallway,” Moore said. “They cleaned about everything they could clean from one end to the other.” Moore said that the closing was a precaution taken by the schools to cut the number of absences. Despite the number of absences, he said that he has seen high absenteeism due to illness in the past and said that it happens more often during the cold weather months as students spend time in close proximity to one another. Moore said that the rapid change in temperatures between cold and warm days also plays a role and takes its toll on students.
Staff members at area schools spent last Thursday and Friday sanitizing the schools to prepare for the children’s return. “I’ve seen it every year, it happens one or two times each year,” Moore said. When school opened last Monday, Moore said that he was still seeing a lot of absences with 50 reported last Monday, but he hoped that they would see an impact from the break later this week.
“We are running pretty high again today,” Moore said. NOTE: The mandatory Tennessee Promise meeting for all McNairy County seniors which had originally been scheduled for last Thursday has been rescheduled for this Wednesday, (Feb. 11) at 3:30 p.m. at the McNairy Central High School.

A 21-year old Bethel Springs man was indicted on charges of solicitation of a minor following an incident with a 12-year-old girl in July 2014. According to McNairy County Assistant District Attorney Bob Gray, James Edward Johnson was indicted on the charges last Monday. The charges stem from JOHNSON an incident on July 10, 2014 in which Johnson was alleged to have picked up a 12-year-old girl to babysit children at his home. The Incident Report from the McNairy County Sheriff’s office alleges that Johnson instead took the girl to pond near Warren Floyd Road in Bethel Springs and offered her $1 million to remove her clothes and go skinny dipping. The alleged victim’s mother reported to police that Johnson also asked to touch her daughter, but the girl refused and Johnson then took her home and paid her $40. There is no evidence to suggest that Johnson paid the reported $1 million that he had allegedly offered the juvenile victim in this case. Johnson is currently being held at the McNairy County jail on a list of unrelated charges. Read next week’s Independent Appeal for a list of all of the McNairy County Grand Jury Indictments from the jury’s February 2015 session.

A 44-year-old Stantonville man was convicted last Monday with aggravated statutory rape of a 14-year-old girl. Adamsville Chiropractor Matthew Barnes was charged in the case on May 12 following separate Sheriff’s Department interviews with the victim and their family as well as the accused. According to McNairy County Assistant District Attorney Bob Gray, Barnes pled guilty to the charges in McNairy County Circuit Court and was sentenced to the maximum sentence of 4-years, however, Barnes was given diversion which means that he will not have to serve any time behind bars. Gray said that Barnes will have to register for the sex BARNES offender’s registry, but could petition to have his name removed from the list following the completion of his diversion. The conviction comes after a McNairy County Sheriff’s Department investigation in which officers spoke with all of the parties involved in this case. “On Sunday May 11, (2014) I received a call from a citizen alleging that his 14-year-old daughter was having a sexual relationship with a 44-year-old man,” McNairy County Sheriff Guy Buck said. “This discovery was made through the parents checking cell phone content and social media sites, the juvenile did admit to a consensual relationship with Matt Barnes, a 44-year-old male that resides in... Stantonville.” Buck said at the time his department was notified of the possible crime on Mother’s Day, (May 11, 2014) after the victim’s Father contacted him. After the initial report, Buck said that they had their sex crime investigator, Deputy Amy Ballard, meet with the victim and the victim’s mother. Following interviews with investigators, they were able to prepare warrants against Barnes at the conclusion of the investigation. Barnes was arrested May 12th, 2014. Gray said that last Monday’s decision does not directly affect Barnes professional licensure as a chiropractor, but Barnes could face additional disciplinary action from the Tennessee Board of Chiropractic Examiners which next meets on April 16.
