Adamsville has been notified by the International Organization for Standardization that its fire rating has been lowered from 7 to 4, Mayor David Leckner told the City Commission meeting last Monday. A local insurer estimated that individual home owners may save somewhere in the area of 10 to 15 percent, according to a press release from the City. The new rate takes effect on March 1, 2015. Leckner said that most if not all residential, commercial and industrial property owners will see a reduction in their fire insurance premiums because of the new rating. “The City is proud to say that the recent investment in its new fire truck is already paying off. Massey was elected Vice-Mayor and Jackie Hamm was appointed to the Planning Commission. Lee Winters already serves on the Adamsville/McNairy County Industrial Development Board. The commission was provided with a series of resolutions for their considerations on a Community Development Block Grant the city is considering applying for. One authorizes Leckner to apply for a $500,000 grant and appoints him as Financial Officer. Another names Hethcoat & Davis as the grant writer on a no-cost basis and the grant engineering firm if the city receives the grant. A third resolution makes the city responsible for the cash match for the grant. A fourth selects Community Development Partners to provide assistance in the preparation and ad-

Mark Hardy leading our Volunteer Fire Department,” Leckner said. Dennis Wolf of the University of Tennessee Municipal Technical Advisory Service informed the City that the new 4 rating places the Adamsville Volunteer Fire Department in the top 14 percent of fire departments in Tennessee. Only 53 fire departments in the state have a better rating than Adamsville. Other data that Wolf provided show that Adamsville is in the top 17 percent of fire departments nationally. “The City of Adamsville is proud of its Fire Chief and Firefighters in achieving this remarkable improvement,” the press release said. This was the first re-rating since 1986 or 1987, the largest drop in the rating in Adamsville's history and the lowest rating ever. In other news from the meeting, Mark

Among fans of the national Birddog Field Trial Circuit, local resident Bill Moore, founder and co-owner of Tricky Dick Kennels in Selmer is a legend. Moore who is known as the Babe Ruth of the sport has spent more than 30 years growing the kennel into one of the premiere birddog kennels in the world. He also holds numerous records in the sport including most total national championships and most national championships in a single year. “We train them, and sell them and run them,” Moore said. “We have females we use to sell puppies from too.” Moore co-owns the kennel with grandson Chris Mullins who is following in his grandfather’s footsteps. Together, the two men have set the standard for excellence in their sport and have garnered interest in a cable TV show based on their work. Currently, Mullins said that they were in talks with the Pursuit Channel for a show based on the kennel’s day to day operations. He said the

network is now in the process of securing sponsors for the show. He said that several other production companies had also approached them about the show and he hoped to have something on the air next year. “We compete in field trials, which are quail hunting competitions with them,” Mullins said. Moore said the competitions are based on the dog’s performance with judges looking at how many birds they find, how many birds they retireve, how they stand up and how they score. He said that they put two dogs in a 30 acre field for 30 minutes during the competition. “We have had 12 National Champions come out of this kennel right here, the most recent was in 2010.” Mullins said. The men said they believe the 12 titles is the most any kennel has won in the sport, and Mullins said that Moore also was the only man to ever win a title at each of the five national competitions in a single year. When asked if they had a term (like a Quintuple Crown) to describe his grandfather’s feat, he said, “No, because nobody has ever done it before.”

Bill Moore trains some of his English Setter dogs at the Tricky Dick Kennels last Friday. Moore and grandson, Chris Mullins coown one of the best known kennels for bird hunting dogs in the nation, and are in talks to have their story told in a Television show about their kennel. The benefits of winning are obvious from a sportsman’s point of view, but the two said that victory was also a big deal

for the business, especially in a national competition, where a

Christmas Shopping Spree brings smiles Staff Photo by Jeff Whitten

The 32nd annual Christmas Shopping Spree held at Walmart in Selmer last Monday brings smiles to both the needy children who receive the presents and the volunteers who help them shop. The event was organized by Jack Cheshier and several of the volunteer shoppers were from the National Honor Society at McNairy Central and some members of the Tennessee Highway Patrol and their mascot. Each district of the THP is given $400 for the charity of their choice each year and District 8 chose the Shopping Spree. Each year around for the past three decades, Cheshier has raised around $20,000 for Christmas gifts for about 300 needy McNairy County students from pre-kindergarten to the fourth grade from schools all over the county. Around 50 volunteers, including 20 to 30 of MCHS NHS students helped the children shop. Students from Bethel Springs Elementary School were the first to arrive a little after 8 a.m. Shopping concluded around 2 p.m. when students from Adamsville Elementary school finished getting their gifts.
