Seeing the county through a child’s eyes

By Janet Rail - Publisher Area elementary students bring a wonderful perspective to the community most take for granted.

In these magazine drawings children let their imaginations run wild. They don’t have to be taught to “think outside the box.”

According to research in the National Academy of Sciences, unlike adults, children under 12 are able to keep information from their senses and perceive the visual world differently.

In this very special issue of “Spotlight” people can take a moment to view the world through a child’s eyes and see how it livens up their daily life.

In these drawings everything is new and full of potential. It is a clean slate. The children were supplied just a few key items to draw a picture for an area business and made this a great learning experience. They want to meet new people and make friends. We know this if we have ever taken a kid to a store and seen them interact with people.

Children tend to think the best of situations and love an adventure. In this art, their minds were free to roam putting things in glowing colors that make life more interesting. There is no staying between the lines for them.

Kids hate to go to bed at night and can’t wait to get up in the morning. We could learn a lot from them. Whether it is a business with a spotlight or one where we would like to shop, enjoy the art.

Take a moment to see it through their eyes.

With a little curiosity, excitement, trust and faith we may bring a lot more joy into local businesses and lives.

Ada’s has a variety of home baked goods including bread and buns, homemade sandwiches and soups, hamburgers, salads, wraps, canned fruits, pickled vegetables and relishes, a host of bulk foods, herbs, vitamins, 80 different herbal teas, over 70 different spices and seasonings, flours, beans, popcorns, dried fruits, dried powder soup mixes, a large selection of sugar free jams, jellies, apple butter, candies, and lots more. At Ada’s they have access to tasty home style products from the Amish and Mennonite communities in other states.

The specialties at Ada’s include home-baked cookies, sorghum molasses (in season), Amish cookbooks, over 30 different kinds of cheese, a large variety of sliced deli meats, butter, 50 different pastas, Amish beef jerky, handmade outdoor furniture and toys.

Big Hill Pond State Park 1435 John Howell Road • Pocahontas, TN (731) 645-7967 Big Hill Pond State Park is located in the southwestern part of McNairy County and encompasses 4,138 acres of timberland and hardwood bottomland. Cypress Creek and the Tuscumbia River border the property. The park derives its name from the 35-acre Big Hill Pond, which was created in 1853 when soil was scooped from a borrow pit to build a levee across the Tuscumbia and Cypress Creek bottoms for the Memphis to Charleston Railroad. The territory was designated a State Park by the Department of Conservation for reassessing the need for recreational opportunities in 1977.

Park highlights include the 70-foot observation tower that offers panoramic views of Travis McNatt Lake and the boardwalk that winds through Dismal Swamp. Guests visiting Big Hill Pond State Park enjoy camping, hiking, mountain biking, fishing and paddling.

Kayak and Canoe rentals are very poplar in the summertime.

Saturday and Sunday canoes and kayaks are rented only by the hour.

Monday – Friday rentals are half-day, full-day and week-long rentals only. The park is also home to thirty miles of overnight and day use trails with four backpack trail shelters.

Visitors with a passion for horses can bring them along for the Big Hill Pond experience. The park has approximately 14 miles of horse trails and is shared with mountain bikers.

Sheriff Buford Pusser Home and Museum

342 Pusser Street • Adamsville, TN McNairy County Courthouse Jail Experience Center 170 W. Court Ave. • Selmer, TN The Buford Pusser Home and Museum, a law enforcement museum, stands as a moment in time as if waiting for Sheriff Buford Pusser to return home from another shift serving the public. It is a snapshot of life in middle class America in the 1970s. The modest brick ranch home contains the original furnishings, photos, cars, guns and memorabilia of the Pusser family. Buford Pusser was the subject of several major motion pictures. The “Walking Tall” movies tell about his life and tragic death.

The Mission of the Buford Pusser Home and Museum is to preserve the integrity of the heritage passed down by Sheriff Pusser and his family. The house was donated to the City of Adamsville by the State of Tennessee who had purchased it from Sheriff Pusser’s daughter, Dwana. The house stands as a monument to Pusser’s great history of cleaning up this part of Tennessee and preserving what life was like for his family.

People from great distances and our area celebrate the legacy of the sheriff including visiting the McNairy County Courthouse Jail Experience Center. The self guided tour starts at Sheriff Pusser’s office where you follow exhibits that lead to the jail at the top of the courthouse. Fullwood Dental Clinic was officially established in the spring of 2012 when Dr. Patrick Fullwood graduated from the University of Tennessee Dental School and returned to Selmer to join his father, Dr. Ronnie Fullwood. Dr. Ronnie Fullwood has been in practice in Selmer for thirty-three years originally located across from the Selmer Courthouse.

In fact, the entire Fullwood family has been involved in healthcare in this community. Dr. Ronnie’s wife Joan is a speech pathologist and worked with children in the school system for many years. She has also worked with patients in the hospital and through home health services.

Dr. Ronnie’s other son, Dr. Brian Fullwood, recently returned to Selmer and is a family physician with Prime Care Medical Center. Dr. Patrick’s wife, Crystal, also worked with the McNairy County EMS for several years as an EMT. Maxedon’s Automotive 291 Hwy 142 • Selmer, TN (731) 645-5420 Maxedon’s Automotive was established in 1954, when Bert Maxedon, Sr. opened the Texaco Service Station at the north end of Selmer, Tennessee. A few years later the opportunity to move near the center of town and open the Phillip’s 66 service station which was named Bert’s 66 came about and the business resided there until 1981. Bert’s sons Danny and Mac became involved in the business through high school detailing cars, pumping gas, and performing all necessary vehicle service work. In 1982, the business moved to the south side of town closer to their home where it still resides today. McNairy Planetarium High School Road • Selmer, TN McNairy Central High School was built in 1969. Inside it’s walls it had an amazing tool for learning about space science, a planetarium.

The planetarium was used for many years offering a chance for students to view the stars and study about outer space.

Later, in the 1990s however the system became impossible to maintain and it was taken out of service. Almost 20 years later a student decided to make it her senior project to try and have it started up again. Enough money was raised to get the room renovated and cleaned. Two other students followed her working to gather more funds and keep awareness going about the project.

In 2017 the project was funded through a community enhancement grant from the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development.

McNairy County Tourism took over the project and brought it to completion with the funds from this. Now it is open! Thousands of students and parents alike have been treated to shows ranging from what you can see in your backyard all the way to the hunt for dark matter and the study of particle physics. Tons of new shows are being planned to range from biology to arts and mathematics.

The planetarium is open June through July on Mondays at 10 a.m.

In August 2017 Bryan Huff and John Huff, father and son, began playing board and card games together. One of these games was Magic the Gathering. The two decided it would be nice to have a place to play in their hometown of Selmer, Tennessee where people could meet and play. They sat down and planned to do a small store in what was at the time Huffoto Photography Studio. It was to be a board/trading card game store with a play space free to anyone who wanted to come. Bryan thought it would be a good experience in business and could serve as a project for John’s entrepreneur badge in scouting.

Almost two years later the store is now the main business in the downtown location. It quickly became a favorite spot for kids and adults of all ages to come and share in their favorite games such as Pokémon, Magic the Gathering, Dungeons and Dragons and so many more. The store has tournaments that draw people from many hours away. There are also midnight events that have had crowds of over 40 players in attendance.

It has a large gym with a stage at one end and an indoor walking track that overlooks the whole area. The center also has meeting rooms, a weight room and the Selmer Senior Center in it. Simpson Law Office first opened in April of 1965 by Paul Simpson, after graduating from The University of Tennessee Law School in 1962.

He had practiced law in Memphis for a year before moving to Jackson, Tennessee where he worked as an adjuster for State Farm Insurance until March of 1965.

At that time he moved to Selmer and opened Simpson Law Office in what was then known as the old McNairy County Bank Building. He purchased the property and building in 1971 from the Louis Adams family, a longtime prominent family in McNairy County. The law office remained in that building until 1972 when it was relocated next door at 108 N. Third Street where it remains today.

Paul Simpson has been practicing law for 54 years. During this period of time, Simpson served 16 years as General Sessions Judge for McNairy County.

In 1997, the law office was renamed Simpson and Simpson, as Paul was joined in his law practice by his son, Eddie Simpson. Eddie graduated from the Nashville School of Law before joining his father.

Eddie was tragically killed in 2000. One of Paul Simpson’s daughters, Amber Phegley, is currently attending Nashville School of Law and plans to join the Simpson and Simpson practice.

Simpson and Simpson Law firm specializes in Social Security Disability and does work in General Practice which includes Criminal and Civil Law.
