Hospital services for McNairy County look promising Joel Counce & Janet Rail Staff Writer & Publisher

McNairy County may be moving closer to a freestanding emergency room or micro-hospital. Health care delivery is fast changing as patient’s desire services that are easy and convenient. As a result, there is a rising trend in what is called a micro-hospital. Most have noted the rise of urgent care clinics and stand-alone emergency rooms and now there is an emerging trend to combine the two into a more diverse type of hospital called ‘microhospitals’. Leaders in the community and state are working in a combined effort to secure emergency services for our community. Last week County Mayor Larry Smith, along with State Representative Ron Gant and Jim Hobson, CEO Magnolia Regional Health Center, and other leaders met in Nashville to discuss options for hospital services in our community that would bear the greatest degree of sustainability, according to Hobson. Hobson, who joined Magnolia last February stated, “My goal is to do something there. Over the next 90 days we will complete our due diligence to determine what models could work in McNairy County and what services can be offered dependent upon what model we choose.” “One problem we’ve run into is the reimbursement rate for free-standing hospitals being close to half the rate of reimbursement for acute care hos-

Micro-hospitals are small-scale inpatient facilities with limited square footage offering a wide range of medical services in a small, neighborhood setting. eight and 10 beds where patients can be observed or admitted for a short stay. Such hospitals are springing up in states such as Texas, Colorado, Arizona and Nevada. BBQ festival coming to Selmer City Park Joel Counce Staff Writer

A year later, grills will fill the Selmer City Park. “We wanted to do this a year ago and we couldn’t,” Smokey Joe’s co-owner Mike Maness said. “They plan on making this an annual event.” The Casey Montgomery Memorial Championship this Saturday will be a barbecue festival and cook-off, the first of its kind in McNairy County. “It’s going to a backyard cook-off,” festival chairperson Danny Montgomery said. “Everyone is invited to participate.” Entry fee for ages 13-years-old up is $75. Participants will cook six pieces of chicken, ribs and steak. The grand champion will receive $250 and a trophy. “This is a big trophy,” Montgomery said. “It is really nice. People will be proud to display this.” First place will win $100, second will win $75 and third place will be win $50. Participants will need to provide their own meat, chicken and ribs are open, but steaks need to be ribeyes at least one inch thick. A category for ages 6-12 will cook pork chops that will be provided. Check-in time for the competition will be 6 a.m. - 8 a.m. at the park.

According to the Tennessee Department of Health website local active cases of Covid -19 remain at 14. Approximately 2,700 McNairy Countians have recovered from Covid-19 with 54 deaths reported. Vaccinations are now available to anyone in Tennessee over the age of 16. According to the Tennessee Department of Health 13,571 people in McNairy County have had at least one dose of Covid-19 vaccine. Just over 30% of the popu-
