County honors brightest students

The McNairy County Board of Education honored 52 of its brightest students last Thursday during the 26th Annual Academic Awards Banquet.

The banquet was the vision of former Independent Appeal staff, publisher, the late Bill Rail, and his wife, Betty Rail, who attended this year’s event and continues to work on the project to this day.

Opening comments were made by Director of Schools, Charlie Miskelly, and

by Asst. Director of Schools, Dr. Brian Jackson, who coordinated the event.

Everyone enjoyed a delicious meal prepared by the cafeteria staff before the awards were presented.

Current Independent Appeal Publisher — and daughter of Bill and Betty Rail — Janet Rail commended the students and the educators for their fine work this year.

Rail went on to commend the community leaders, school administrators, principals and the event sponsors for their commitment to education and for their work to help with this year’s banquet.

After a wonderful meal Miskelly and Rail presented awards to each student and commended them for their achievements.

Following the awards presentation, Reggie Churchwell, famed music promoter, Rockabilly Hall of Fame member, and, Milledgeville native, took the stage to address the awardees.

Churchwell challenged each student

to follow their dreams. He discussed both success and failure with the students, and relayed to the students that he had experienced both, learning with each new experience.

“The only thing you can depend on in life is change,” Churchwell said. “Adapt quickly and move on.”

Chruchwell prepared the students for the coming highs and lows of life with an overall message that hard work, despite the inevitable pitfalls, was worth the effort.

He summed up this message with a quote from Theodore Roosevelt, “Far better is it to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even checkered with failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat.”

Greg Martin, principal of Adamsville High School then presented Churchwell with an award.

Of the 52 Academic Award recipients, McNairy Central High School honored 9, Adamsville High School 9, Adamsville Junior High 11, Selmer Middle School 8, Ramer Elementary School 4; Michie Elementary School 5, and Bethel Springs Elementary 6.

Photos and short biographies of the students appear in the following pages. The Independent Appeal applauds all of these outstanding students and their educators for their hard work and dedication that led to recognition at this year’s event.

How students are selected to receive awards From STAFF REPORTS

How are the students chosen? How many come from each school? What kind of scores on what subjects qualify a student to receive an academic award?

There are many different criteria that are used in selecting the Academic Award honorees each year.

There is a certain criteria used by the 8th grade principals and another criteria that determines the high school winners.

Below is the criteria used in selecting students for the Academic Awards in both the junior high and high school levels.

Guidelines for selecting 8th Grade Participants:

Springs Elementary, Michie Elementar y, Ramer Elementary and Selmer Middle School will identify their top academic students from the 8th grade by using the following accomplishments:

school level The suggested list is NOT in order of priority.

*Advanced scores in Math, Language Arts, Science and Social Studies

Number of Participants Per School: Adamsville High SchoolApproximately 8, McNairy Ce n t ra l - Ap p rox i m a t e l y 12.

*Grade Point Average *Building Contests (Spelling Bee, Writing, Math, Science Fair, etc.) *Honor Roll, Principal’s List *ACT of 20 or higher in any area *Accelerated Reading *Writing Assessment

Number of Participants Per School: Approximately 10% of 8th grade class

*District, Regional, or State winners in any academic competition

Criteria for Selection: Adamsville Jr. High, Bethel

*Other areas as designated at the individual

Guidelines for Selecting 12th Grade Participants:

Criteria for Selection: In order to fill the available slots, each high school can select honorees by using the following rank system.

Principals will start from the top and continue until the available slots are filled. An individual can fill only one slot, regardless of the number of qualifications met.

The school should only invite those students meeting the following guidelines: *PSAT National Merit

Finalist

*ACT Composite Score of 30 or higher or SAT total score of 1200 or higher *Top GPA through seven semesters *Second highest GPA through seven semesters *PSAT National Merit Semi-Finalist *Regional first place winner for academic competition in Math, Science, Social Studies, Language, Foreign Language or Youth Senate (District) *Governor’s School participant--rank order taking seniors first. *Other CategoriesAdditional slots may be filled upon recommendation and approval of the building principal.

Included in this category are students that scored 5 or 6 on the State Writing Test.

Adamsville High School JUSTIN CARLISLE – Justin is the son of the late Bobbie Wilson. Justin is being recognized tonight for his ACT scores. He scored 30 in Reading, 30 in Math, 34 in Science, and had a composite score of 30. Justin is a threetime AHS State Championship Band member.

NEALY DALTON – Nealy is the daughter of Claude and Angela Dalton. She is being honored this evening for her ACT Reading score of 32. Nealy is a member of the 2012 AHS Hall of Fame, and has also been recognized every year at the AHS Awards Banquet for her outstanding academic performance.

CHELSEA FRANKS – Chelsea is the daughter of James and Christy Franks.

She is being recognized tonight for her ACT Reading score of 30. Chelsea is a member of the 2012 AHS Hall of Fame, and has also been recognized every year at the AHS Awards Banquet for her outstanding academic performance.

JOCOB KEE – Jacob is the son of Tom and Lori Kee. He is being recognized this evening for his ACT scores.

He received a score of 33 in Reading,

30 in Science, and had a composite score of 32. Jacob is a four-time AHS State Championship Band member.

MACAYLA KIDDY – Macayla is the daughter of Barry Kiddy and Tammy Ramsey. She is being recognized tonight for her ACT Reading score of 30.

Macayla has been recognized every year for outstanding academic performance at the AHS Awards Banquet.

BETHANY LONG – Bethany is the daughter of Brian and Amy Reid and Joel Long. She is being honored tonight for her ACT Reading score of 31.

Bethany is Beta Club President, Pickwick Electric Corporation Essay Contest winner, and has been recognized for her outstanding academic performance every year at the AHS Awards Banquet.

CHLOE MULLIS – Chloe is the daughter of Ronnie and Tina Mullis.

Chloe is being recognized tonight for being the Salutatorian of the Class of 2012, ranking second with a GPA of 97.71. She is also being recognized for her ACT English score of 30. McNairy Central High School SARAH HUNTER – Sarah is a senior at McNairy Central. She has a 4.0 GPA with an average of 100.11. JERRY EMMONS – Jerry is a senior at McNairy Central. He has a 3.66 GPA. Jerry has an ACT composite score of 28 with a 30 in English, a 31 in Reading and a 30 in Science. He is a member of the UT Martin Honor Percussion Ensemble, All-West Honor Band, and TMEA All State Band. He plans to attend UT Martin in the Fall and major in Music Education. Selmer Middle School BRANDON BROWN – Brandon is the son of Michelle Brown and Jeff Brown. Brandon made Advanced on all subject areas of the 2011 TCAP. Brandon scored 25 on the Science Explore and above 20 on English, Math and Composite. He scored a 5 on his last Writing Assessment and has been on the Honor Roll several times this year.

GRANT GOODMAN – Grant is the son of David and Lisa Goodman of Selmer. Grant made Advanced on all subject areas of the 2011 TCAP. For the Explore Test, he scored a 25 in Reading and Science, 24 on Math, 22 on the English, and a 24 on the Explore Composite. He scored a 5 on the last Writing Assessment, and he has been on the Principal's List and Honor Roll several times within the year. Grant's GPA at the end of the first semester was 95.4.

PAYAL PATEL – Payal is the daughter of Jayesh and Daxa Patel. Payal made Advanced on all subject areas of the 2011 TCPA. She scored 24 on the Explore English, 22s in Math and Reading, 25 on the Explore Science, and 23 for her Composite. On her last Writing Assessment she scored a 5 out of a possible 6. DYLAN ESKEW -- Dylan is the son of Taylor and Jessica Eskew of Bethel Springs. Dylan scored a 23 on the English portion of the EXPLORE test, along with a 20 in Math, which was given earlier this school year. He received 1st place in the Bethel Clover Bowl as an 8th grader. He has been on the Honor Roll and Principal’s List several times over the last three years.

ROSIE HOSTETLER -- Rosie is the daughter of Matthew and Cassie Hostetler of Finger. Rosie scored a 20 on the EXPLORE test.

Michie Elementary School Grayson Chandler -- Grayson is an 8th grade student at Michie Elementary. He is the son of Trent and Donna Chandler. Grayson is being recognized this evening for scoring Advanced in all areas of the TCAP test.

Ramer Elementary School Christian Brown -- Christian Brown is the son of Tim and Tina Brown. He scored advanced in all four areas of the TCAP test: reading/language arts, math, science and social studies. Christian’s ACT EXPLORE test showed scores of 25 in English, 25 in math, and 25 in science with a composite score of 23, placing him in the 99th percentile overall. Consistently on the Principal’s List, Christian is a member of the Junior Beta Club and has been named as the top male student of the 8th grade class with a 99.75 grade point average. Christian was a member of the 8th grade 4-H Clover Bowl team that placed first in the county at this year’s tournament. At this time, Christian has 888.7 A.R. points.

Mary Kate Doyle -- Mary Kate Doyle is the daughter of Richard and Denise Doyle. She scored a 25 in English, a 24 in math, a 25 in reading, and a 21 in science for a composite score of 24 on the ACT EXPLORE test placing her in the 99th percentile overall. On the TCAP test, Mary Kate was advanced in reading/language arts, math, and social studies. Mary Kate has been named to the Principal’s List each nine weeks at Ramer and is a member of the Junior Beta Club. Mary Kate has been named as the top female student of her 8th grade class

with a 98.21 grade point average.

Mary Kate has 219.2 AR points this year.

Terry Kayla Rebstock -Terry Kayla Rebstock is the daughter of Terry and Judith Rebstock.

Terry Kayla scored advanced on the math, science, and social studies portions of the TCAP test in 2011.

Terry Kayla has been on the Principal’s List or Honor Roll several times during her junior high years.

She has an overall average of 95.85 and is a member of the Junior Beta Club and the TACS program at Ramer. Terry Kayla scored a 21 in English and 20 in science on the ACT EXPLORE test giving her an overall composite score of 20. She has accumulated 213.8 AR points this year.
