Independent Appeal Basketball Preview By Amanda Lowrance Head Sports Writer

The time has come to step indoors to the wonderful world of basketball. Pack away your blankets and take off your jackets, this sport has the luxury of keeping warm and cozy all while watching you favorite teams. Throughout the cold winter ahead, these teams will heat up the basketball courts. A year has passed and the lonely gymnasiums are now flooded with junior high and high school players practicing and competing to be the best. The young students will take a step closer to adulthood and will show a year’s worth of improvement on the court. Whistles and buzzers echo throughout the gyms and the athletes have traded their helmets for a new pair of shoes to squeak over the polished, wood floor. Basketball season brings everyone closer together. As an added bonus, there is a break

Best of Luck Bobcats! 904 Mulberry Ave. • Selmer, Tn. 38375 (731) 645-4300

in schedules allowing time for each holiday. We have published this Independent Appeal Basketball Preview to offer our readers in-depth interviews with each team’s coach on what they predict the season will entail in comparison to previous years, detailed schedules so you will know when your favorite team is playing, complete rosters so you can follow you favorite players and have packed it with team and full court action photos for you to enjoy. This year, we will be sharing this preview with our online readers beginning Dec. 1 on our website www.independentappeal.com for quick reference and continued reading. With all the excitement comes a tremendous amount of pressure. Imagine a gym full of people screaming and stomping while a young player attempts a free throw. Valuable lessons will be learned. As these teams head into the playoffs late in the season pressure will bring out the most in athletes as they are pushed to perform better than ever before.

2011 Adamsville High School Cardinals

By Andrew Alexander Sports Writer

In his first year as the head coach of the Cardinals, Nathaniel Root has high expectations for his team. Root says their combination of depth, quickness, and tenacity of defense will be their keys to success. “The way we play, we swarm,” said Root. “I think that makes it look like instead of five players being out there there’s six or seven.” Adamsville’s success will also rely on how well Root and his assistants, Steven Price and Will Barkley, can prepare the team. “The pressure is to prepare,” said Root. “If we do a good job as a staff preparing these guys for each game we play, everything will take care of itself.” Root says making adjustments and gelling once football players get back into the gym will be the biggest challenge this season, and making the team, led by seniors Kasey Hurley, Jalen Kendall, Josh Shoate, and Josh Sinclair more aggressive is one of his top priorities. The Cardinals finished 19-9 last season and ended their season with a loss to Westwood in the Region 8A Semifinals, but this year’s team is aiming higher.

2011 Adamsville High School Lady Cardinals

By Andrew Alexander Sports Writer

The Lady Cardinals lost three seniors to graduation, but driven by the senior leadership of Mikayla Kiddy, Brianne Knight, and Nikki White, will set their sights on improving on last year’s record along with making it out of the district tournament. Adamsville finished the 2010-2011 season with an 8-15 record and a loss to South Gibson in the first round of the district tournament, and Head Coach Todd McGee says his team really wants to do better. “They tell us they want to be good, and I think they’ve bought into that,” said McGee. “They’re willing to do what it takes to be good.” McGee says the team lacks experience in the paint and that he is still waiting for a leader to emerge, but the team’s strengths are its quickness, its experience in the back court, its athleticism, and its desire to win. “We’re not real big, but we’re pretty fast. We’re going to try to spread people out a little bit and take advantage of that,” said McGee. “They’ve got a lot of heart, and they’re probably the most athletic team I’ve coached in eight years.”

2011 McNairy Central High School Bobcats

By Amanda Lowrance Head Sports Writer

The youngsters of last year’s McNairy Central basketball have grown over the course of the year and are bringing a new game to the court in 2011. With only a couple of seniors moving on to college, the Bobcats will be working with experienced players. Not only has the team been preparing in the offseason, but they are able to reach new heights. After last year’s record of 9-18, Coach Steve Forsythe returns for his sixth year as coach for the McNairy Central Bobcats with an overall 20 years of experience under his belt. “We had a tough district last year,” said Forsythe. “In the tournament, we lost out to Bolivar at Bolivar.” “This year I think we are going to be deeper, more athletic, and this is going to be a good group.” Forsythe will be assisted by Tim Dancer and this will be the season where experience will pay off, with added hard work and dedication.

2011 McNairy Central High School Lady Bobcats

By Amanda Lowrance Head Sports Writer

Going all the way to sub-state last year, the McNairy Central Lady Bobcats finished 25-8 in their overall season. Thirty-five years as head coach for the Lady Bobcats, Jerry Lott has earned many awards, honors, and is recognized by the new gym floor. Last year’s battle to reach the top passed with many victories, including winning first in the District Championship, second in the Regional Tournament, and earning a spot into sub-state. “Last year was a good year,” said Lott. “We were one game away from playing in the state tournament, so it was a good year.” Five seniors have moved on, all of which seen a great deal of playing time. The Lady Bobcats have three seniors this year and they are ready to step up and lead the team to another successful season. “Every group is different. Our underclassmen are just going to have to get a little tougher and get used to high school basketball. It’s a little different than playing on the freshmen team. It’s a different game.” While the team lacks experience, Lott makes up for it in coaching and the season will be suspenseful and exciting.

2011 Adamsville Jr. High Cardinals

By Andrew Alexander Sports Writer

With an inexperienced roster and and inexperienced coach, the Adamsville Junior High School Cardinals will use each game in the 2011-2012 season as a learning experience and embrace the challenges that lie before them. First year coach and former high school basketball standout at Adamsville, Will Barkley, plans to lead a disciplined Junior Cards team in what is sure to be a tough season. “We’re going to be well disciplined,” said Barkley. “We’re very undersized from what I’ve heard about the other teams in the county. We’re going to have to get up and the floor and score in transition. That’s what we did my senior year here, and I’ve been trying to instill that into our guys.” AJHS is returning only one player from last year’s team that had substantial playing time, James McDonald, and the Junior Cards will lean heavily upon him. “We’re going to be counting on him to carry the load for us,” said Barkley. “He’s going to play a big role.” Adamsville finished last season 1-13, and with a new coach and young players, the team is sure to have it’s ups and downs. “There’s going to be a learning curve,” said Barkley, “but when it’s all said and done, I think we’re going to be pretty successful this season.”

2011 Adamsville Jr. High Lady Cardinals

By Andrew Alexander Sports Writer

Junior Lady Cardinal coach Rebecca Ashe enters her fifth season coaching at Adamsville. After a 6-7 finish in the 2010-2011 season, her team is looking to make some noise in McNairy County basketball. Ashe hopes the team’s size and experience will work as an advantage against their opponents in the 2011-2012 season. “We’ve got some big girls, and good size,” Ashe said. The Lady Cards also boast a roster with eight 8th graders leading the way as AJHS will face tough competition against teams like Michie and Selmer. “We started a pretty good rivalry with (Michie) last year,” Ashe said referring to the teams’ three matchups, “so that will be a big game, and Selmer will be a big game.” Adamsville’s lack of a true point guard will make it difficult for the Lady Cardinals to score from the perimeter, but Ashe believes what the team lacks there is made up for by their post play. “Hopefully some of our older players are going to come through,” said Ashe, “and maybe we can make a run come tournament time.”

2011 Bethel Springs Jr. High Rebels

By Andrew Alexander Sports Writer

The Rebels of Bethel Springs finished the 2010-2011 campaign with an overall record of 5-11, but look to “do the unthinkable,” according to Head Coach Brian Franks and win the county championship for the first time in the school’s history. “We have our sites set on winning the county...” Franks said. “I think that we have a shot at beating everyone that beat us last year. We’re looking to take that 5-11 season and turn it around.” This year’s team returns three starters from last season, and a host of other athletes. “Dakorea Dilworth will start at point guard, Dylan Crabb will start at shooting guard. They both started last year, and Darwin Kelley will be our big man down low and he also started last year,” said Franks. “We look for big things out of Darrius Sanders, Tata Newsom, and Austin Pace who will also be big time contributors this season along with a couple other guys off the bench like Keenan Davis and Jeremy Harris.” Guards controlling the ball and distributing it down low for post players to pour in points along with scoring quickly in transition will be the areas of the game that Franks hopes the team can improve on to make this season successful. “Our focus this year is just controlling the ball better and getting it worked down to the big guys a little bit more than we did last year,” said Franks. “We’ve got really good guards and a lot of speed.” The Rebels quickness will allow them to run a dribble-drive offense and a stingy man-to-man defense to create turnovers and put points on the board in what they hope is a championship season in 2011-2012.

By Amanda Lowrance Head Sports Writer

After the resignation of Sherry Smith, Crystal Slaughter debuts as head coach of Bethel Springs Lady Rebel basketball. In previous years, Slaughter has assisted Bethel’s girls’ and boys’ teams and continues to coach volleyball at McNairy Central High School. Smith carried out a record of 1-13, with a regular season win against Savannah Christian Academy. The Lady Rebels did not have the best year, but they never gave up. “We are young and it will show this season,” said Slaughter, “but as everyone gets more experience, we will improve as the season progresses.” Rebel coach Brian Franks and Mr. Jeff Droke have been assisting Slaughter with the girls’ team and together they plan to build and work to win more games this year. One thing is for sure; the Lady Rebels are determined and will never quit trying.

Michie boys’ went undefeated in last year’s regular season with an overall record of 19-2. Coach Michael Cleary has joined his team once again for his seventh year at Michie. “Last year’s season was the culmination of a lot of hard work, determination and dedication,” said Cleary. “It was a record setting, banner year.” Losing all of their starters with graduation into high school, the Blue Devils will be starting with a fresh, young group of boys. Because the big group of talent that was one year ahead of them, these youngsters did not receive a lot of playing time in previous years. “This season will be a challenge because of inexperience and youth,” said Cleary. “We don’t expect to win every game, but we do expect to see marked improvement in each contest. It will be a fun learning experience with a good group of young men.” With the assistance of Randall Shadburn, the two plan to coach and guide these brave, youthful boys to learn the fundamentals and skills necessary to be successful basketball players.

The Michie Lady Blue Devils had a good season last year with a 12-6 record. Coach Andrea Whitten returns this basketball season for her fourth consecutive year with the Lady Blue Devils. Michie has grown this year in height and maturity and plans to compete to their full potential. Coach Alicia Day will be the new assistant, filling in for Coach Clark Whitten. “Last year’s season was decent but not what we hoped for,” said Whitten. “The girls are working very hard this year and have a lot of potential! We hope to have a strong season.” Their 12-6 record has been the best record Whitten has seen yet as coach on the junior high level and now that the Lady Blue Devils have matured from their once very young team, Michie plans to have their greatest season yet.

Coach Jeremy Blakely introduced himself to the Ramer Eagles last year and led the team to an 18-4 season after being eliminated from the TNT State Tournament. Blakely returns this year with assistance from Tim Brown. The team lost four starters last year with graduation, but more of their once younger players are returning that seen a great deal of playing time. With only two years in, Jeremy feels that his team is beginning to come together to learn his methods. “The players have an idea of my system and expectations,” said Blakely, “so I have had more time to work on fundamentals this year.” Nevertheless, the Eagles do not underestimate their competitors, especially the local competition. “There are some strong teams in the county,” said Blakely. “I think the County Championship will be extremely competitive.”

The Ramer Lady Eagles welcome back Coach Vonda Jobe for her second year as head coach, after assisting for 4 years under Belinda Shelton. Jobe led the young team to an 8-18 overall season. “Last year was a rebuilding year,” said Jobe. “We improved as the season progressed, winning six out of our last eight games of the season.” Two Lady Eagle starters from last year return with three more players, who received a lot of playing time. The team is anxious to see where they fit in now, especially in the county. “I’m really looking forward to this season,” said Jobe. “The girls seem to be more confident this year, and, as they did last year, they play with so much heart, hustle, and intensity.”

In the Selmer Lions previous season, the team was only able to come away with a handful of wins, but was able to compete with the county wide schools. Selmer beat Ramer out of the County Tournament, but could not stick the undefeated Michie Blue Devils. Coach Wayne Maxedon has been with the Lions for over 30 years beginning in the football program and has coached basketball for approximately 25 of those years as well. “We have won eight or ten county championships,” said Maxedon, “but I haven’t won any in the past three or four years.” According to Maxedon, Selmer is the only team in the county to win the TNT State Tournament. In 2009, according to TSSAA records, the Lions won the 3A State Championship and would like to see a similar victory this year. “We played a lot of our seventh graders last year,” said Maxedon. “We have fair size and only have one true starter returning. I think we will be situated soon to be able to play 10 or 11 guys. I would like to play all 20 of them.” The Lions are on the rebound and looking for a successful season.

The Selmer Lady Lions held an undefeated record last year. The team moved on to the TNT State Tournament and lost out in the first round to end the season. The 3A Lady Lions fell to South Cumberland last February 41-37. According to TSSAA records, Marilyn Gilchrist is the only person to hold record for Selmer from 1974 as Most Valuable Player. Over the course of four years the Lady Lions have obtained the championship title in the county. Coach Robin York has led Selmer to three of those back-to-back County Championships out of the three years she has been coach. The team is looking up even though there have been some alterations. “I am completely rebuilding this year,” said York, “because all my starters left last year. The only starter I have this year is Kaitlyn West. We are a much different team, so we are going to have to approach teams a little more differently than we did last year.” Selmer is ready to hit their newly assembled home gym floor for a full season.
