Selmer Rotary Club honors volunteers with banquet By Steve Beavers Assistant Editor
Serving others is the mission of the Selmer Rotary Club. The civic organization honored individuals who serve others with the 18th Annual Citizen of the Year Banquet. “We have some true heroes
in our community,” said Rotary President/Selmer Mayor John Smith. “Hopefully, in the future we can do more to shed the light on our tremendous citizens.” Rotary awarded seven honors during the Oct. 25 event at the Selmer Community Center. Volunteer awards were presented to a firefighter, law enforcement
officer, teacher, standout youth and adult volunteers. Selmer Fire Chief Anthony Carr presented the firefighter award to fireman Sean Hood. “He is dedicated,” said Carr. “Anything you ask him to do, he will do it.” Hood has been a fireman and first responder for 20 years.
“He has the attitude of ‘I will take care of it’ in every situation,” said Carr. McNairy County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Dameon Blue was selected the Law Enforcement Officer of the Year. “This is the highlight of the year for me,” said McNairy County Sheriff Guy Buck in presenting
the award. “Dameon is what the county needs.” The McNairy Central High School graduate is a former employee of the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and also works for the Bethel Springs Police Department.

New location better for Jesus Cares customers By Steve Beavers Assistant Editor
The mission continues for a McNairy County organization. Jesus Cares – the combined effort of close to 50 churches in the county – is all about serving others. “Jesus Cares is a God thing,” said organization assistant executive director Laura Keeton. “It’s about reaching people for Him.” A recent change of locations to Mulberry Avenue has helped the thrift store better serve others, according to Keeton. “Everyone loves the new store,” said Keeton of the site behind Farm Bureau and Henry Furniture. “Customers now have plenty of room to walk around.” The new thrift store officially opened Oct. 3. A grand opening
was held on Oct. 10. “We can put so much more out on the floor,” said the assistant director of the extra space. “We are also able to sell furniture now and the parking is much better.” It also helps that the thrift store and donation drop-off spot are in the same location instead of across the street from each other. “This is an awesome ministry,” said Keeton, who become involved with the Adamsville Thrift Store over three years ago. “Jesus Cares does what no other place does … I have seen a lot of people helped by this ministry.” Jesus Cares has assisted people with their electric, gas and water bills. It has also provided
