Met veel trots nemen we begin juli officieel de ‘Highly Protected Risk’ award van onze verzekeraar FM Global in ontvangst. Indaver Antwerpen is binnen de Indaver Groep de eerste site die voor haar installaties gevaarlijk afval deze erkenning verdient! We kwamen van ver om dit te realiseren en toch is het ons in enkele jaren tijd gelukt. Dit is een mooie motivatie om ook op andere domeinen nog verdere stappen te zetten.

Binnen ons veiligheidscultuur+ project blijven we inzetten op de veiligheid van onze mensen en installaties. In dit achtste nummer vind je hierover opnieuw acht boeiende artikels. Het is verbazend hoe gemakkelijk we een nummer telkens weer ‘vol’ krijgen met verhalen over nieuwe initiatieven. Het langetermijn-actieplan is duidelijk in volle actie.

Naast het blijvend inzetten op mensen en installaties, is ook ieders persoonlijke proactieve veiligheidsgedrag super belangrijk. Er zijn hiervoor twee ondersteunende hulpmiddelen beschikbaar: het veiligheids- en milieuzakboekje voor contractoren dat een inhoudelijke herziening kreeg en onze gedragscode die we volop uitrollen. Misschien heeft jullie team de gedragscode al concreet gemaakt voor de installatie waar jullie werken, zoniet dan komt dat heel binnenkort op de agenda.

Begin juni mochten we weer trakteren op mooie resultaten. Voor jullie inspanningen tijdens de shutdown en voor veiligheidscijfers die weer stijgen: 100 dagen werken zonder ongevallen met werkverlet voor onze eigen medewerkers, ruim een jaar voor de vaste contractoren en meer dan 200 dagen voor alle anderen. Proficiat!

Ondertussen staan we voor een zomervakantieperiode. Zoals het er nu naar uitziet gaan we die op een iets ‘normalere’ manier kunnen doorbrengen. Ga je op reis, hou het dan ook daar veilig, blijf je thuis, geniet dan veilig met volle teugen van wat ons land aan sport, ontspanning en cultuur te bieden heeft.

Hydrochloric acid is an essential raw material for these processes and Indaver supplies the recovered hydrochloric acid back to the industry as a secondary raw material.

During the treatment process, IndaChlor generates energy. We supply the steam through a pipeline to a neighbouring alcohol distillery (see p. 69), which consumes fewer fossil fuels as a result and thus reduces its CO2 emissions.

CIRCULARITY DEMANDS FLEXIBILITY Even if everything works in theory, the circular economy is sometimes more problematic in practice and some flexibility is often required. IndaChlor is a good example of this. The business in Dunkirk that was going to purchase the hydrochloric acid from our recycling facility went bankrupt in 2020. This project is one of the two symbiosis projects that have been selected to encourage the circular economy in the Antwerp port area. An independent jury of experts assessed the projects submitted on factors such as: environmental impact, scalability, their innovative nature, and the potential to become a real investment that Flanders supports in its effort to reduce household waste or materials consumption.

SAFE TREATMENT OF HMW BY MEDIPOWER Indaver has years of experience in the treatment of hazardous medical waste (HMW). In Antwerp (Belgium) we have a rotary kiln incinerator, MediPower, which is specifically designed for the treatment of this waste stream. With a temperature of 950°C, followed by afterburning, we can destroy the hazardous components.

When the HMW arrives at MediPower, the automatic feed system, with its roller conveyors, pushers and lifts, ensures the packaged waste goes directly into the oven.

Minimal manual operations are required. It goes without saying that our staff wear all the appropriate personal protective equipment while treating this type of waste.

Biodiversity makes up part of the European Green Deal and is an essential part of every environmental permit, whether it concerns a new site, a modification or an extension.

TREE HOTEL Indaver in the Netherlands has a tree hotel on its Stainkoeln site in Groningen. Trees that can no longer remain where they are, due to works, for example, are moved to this site temporarily. One of the reasons this was done was to preserve the big old lime trees that had to make way for the new ring-road around Groningen.

With a forecast of up to six months, rather than weeks, we look at how much waste will be generated by our customers. Based on our treatment capacity and that of the external facilities, we draft a global capacity plan. This gives us insight into potential sticking points, such as overcapacity or even a capacity shortage. Using this information, we make an operational plan for the weeks to come with suitable instructions for order management and planning. Thanks to this prognosisapproach we can stock waste temporarily, postpone certain campaigns, or bring in an external treatment facility, for example. And we ensure our customers can always count on the continuity of our service provision.

Indaver is growing steadily both geographically and in our treatment portfolio. We look into opportunities that fit with our core values and with the transition to a circular economy. At the same time, the complexity of our service provision is also growing. We have to deal with legislation and regulations from Europe and from the other countries in which we are operational. To continue to meet our customers’ wishes and demands and to further strengthen our operational reliability, we worked on our new organisation structure in 2021 in the form of business lines and a shared service structure. GLOSSARY Anaerobic composting (digestion) A method to convert organic waste into compost via bacteria. This method does

not require oxygen.

ARP Acid Recovery Plant, a recycling facility for recovering hydrochloric acid from waste streams from the steel industry.

Biomass A feedstock for energy generation which replaces fossil fuel.

BREF or BREF document, Best Available Technique (BAT) Reference Document, provides background information and clarification for implementing the Best Available Techniques (BATs) a business can use. When approving an environmental permit, the permit provider must take the BAT conclusions into account.

BU IST Business Unit Indaver Separation Technologies.

Chain responsibility Part of corporate social responsibility.

It is intended to give insight into sustainable behaviour (origin of raw materials, production process, service provision) in the chain between companies, suppliers and customers.

Circular economy An economic system in which primary raw materials and waste and energy loss are minimised by slowing, closing and narrowing material and energy loops. This can be achieved through sustainable design, maintenance, repair, reuse, re-manufacturing, refurbishing, and recycling.

Climate neutral Achieving net zero carbon emission by balancing a measured amount of carbon released with an equivalent amount sequestered or offset.

CMR Convention on the Contract for the International Carriage of Goods by Road, a binding international contract for goods transported by road between European countries. Some non-European countries are also affiliated with it.

Dioxins Compounds that are toxic, persistent, organic pollutants. They are often a by-product of industrial processes.

EcoVadis Independent assessment agency that makes it possible for purchasing departments to assess businesses worldwide on their commitment to corporate social responsibility.

EED The EU’s Energy Efficiency Directive specifies that large companies must keep a detailed record of their energy management (EED-reporting). They must also implement all energy-saving measures that can be recouped within five years.

Emission The release of a particular substance from a particular place (e.g. a chimney) expressed in volume/m3.

Emission measurement The measurement of the volume/ concentration of a particular substance released from a particular place.

Emission limit value Emissions standard, i.e. the maximum volume/concentration that may be emitted.

Enabler (facilitator) Indaver’s role in the circular economy, in which we recover energy and high-quality materials from waste safely and efficiently.

Energy cluster Heat from Indaver’s plants that is supplied to neighbouring companies and residential areas.

Frequency rate Legally determined safety indicator that charts the number of accidents involving more than 1 calendar day off work: Fr = (A*1,000,000)/B A = number of accidents involving time off work B = number of hours exposure per year (sum of all personnel).

Gatekeeper Indaver’s role in the circular economy, in which we keep hazardous components out of the food and materials chains before, during and after waste treatment.

Green gas Gas reprocessed from biogas, which in turn is obtained from digested wet organic residue. This green gas is of a very high quality and can therefore replace fossil natural gas.

Green heat Heat derived from sources of renewable energy. In Indaver’s case, the source of renewable energy is biowaste.

Grate incinerator Incinerator with energy recovery for thermal treatment of non-recyclable fractions of nonhazardous household waste and commercial waste.

GRI Global Reporting Initiative, an international organisation that sets guidelines for sustainability reporting.

HMW Hazardous Medical Waste.

IED Industrial Emissions Directive 2010/75/EU is the main EU instrument for regulating the release of polluting substances by industrial facilities.

Indaver Molecule Management Recovering molecules from pharmaceutical and chemical waste for reuse in industrial processes.

Industrial symbiosis System in which raw materials are recovered from one company’s waste to be used in another company’s manufacturing processes.

Intermodal transport The combination of different modes of transport, i.e. road, water, rail, to transport waste.

Interregional Packagin Commission (IRPC) The public institution that is responsible for Belgian legislation on packaging waste and for waste transit ISO International Organisation for Standardization.

IWS Industrial Waste Services.

Mass balance The mass balance is a visual representation of each thermal process. The ‘in’ side shows the quantities of additives, water and energy needed to treat the waste efficiently. The ‘out’ side shows the quantity of solid residual materials remaining after the process, the quantity of flue gases emitted and the quantities of waste water and energy released during treatment.

Materials loop System in which raw materials are being constantly recovered, reused and recycled in a safe manner. nHMW Non-Hazardous Medical Waste.

OVAM Public Flemish waste company, the agency that is responsible for waste policy and soil remediation in Flanders.

Physicochemical treatment Immobilisation, fixation, solidification and stabilisation – the techniques or methods used for the treatment of hazardous waste so that the waste can be deposited safely in a class 1 landfill site.

PMD Plastic bottles, Metal packaging and Drinks cartons (selectively collected).

Pollutant volumes Refers to the quantity of contaminated components that the incinerator stacks emit in one year.

These volumes are expressed in tonnes.

QESH Quality, Environment, Safety and Health – usually referring to an Indaver policy or department.

Residue Waste materials that cannot be further recycled or treated after sorting, purification or treatment.

RFID Radio frequency identification, where data on a label, tag or chip is read via radio frequencies.

Rotary kiln incinerator An incinerator with energy recovery for the thermal treatment of hazardous waste.

Sustainable employment HR policy to enact sustainable measures for long-term, healthy, enjoyable and productive participation in the labour process.

Safe Sink Guarantee Destruction of unrecoverable elements in waste and the capture of the remaining, potentially hazardous components in Indaver’s high-tech, final-treatment facilities, thus removing them from the materials chain.

SHE Safety, Health and Environment - refers to a policy or department of Indaver.

SDG Sustainable Development Goals defined by the United Nations.

SEVESO European Directive on the management of risks associated with the storage and handling of hazardous waste.
