oa is not only about the sunny beaches and glittering nightlife, people here do not drink and take siesta whole day, Goans do not party 24X7, and they surely consider their guest as a God. Goa has much more to offer than nightlife, liquor, and gamble.

Goa has rich history and solid culture, it has a preserved heritage and colonial architecture, and in fact Goa is the only place in India that has a colonial structures, churches, age-old ruins, palm-fringed beaches, coconut groves, ferry rides, and bubbly folk music and that makes it the 'Pearl of East'. Through the medium of this publication, I try my best to bring to you the real Goa. Goa's heritage structure or we call it colonial architecture is world renowned, there are hundreds of books are written on this subject.

Incredible Goa is trying to bring to you the insights to these places, the tales you may not get online, and the stories straight from the horse's mouth. The story of Braganza house as narrated by Mrs. Auria Braganza Pereira, the only survivor of its 14th generation takes you to the past as well tells you the situation of the present. The story has the ingredient of the rich and glorious past as well as the poor and manageable present, and the most interesting thing here is that, both the situation has been experienced by the narrator of this story. Who else will tell you better than the one behind the situation? To know more about it, please read the cover story and provide your honest comments.

I constantly work towards providing our readers with the best of the content and information. Our story tells a lot. In the late 90s, Goa has the hub of prostitution at the place called Baina and it was the challenge for this state to clean this place and make Goa a better place for the tourists. The hero of our story in trend setters is the one who took this challenge and did his best to clean that area and rehabilitate many victims, read more on this in Trendsetter column.

After doing the last transformation in the design of the magazine, this time I have tried to keep it same for some more time. Most of the columns are same as the previous issues except with the new contents but with your suggestions I can try to add some more improvements in the contents and design. Here we are going to take you through the journey of the unknown giving you the bit by bit details of “The Colonial Houses of Goa� this will also include brief history and the present status. In this part, we are going to take you to the house of Menezes Braganza Pereira also known as Braganza House situated in Chandor.

oa has a treasure of great historical monuments, some of it are taken over by the government and preserved maintaining the guidelines of world heritage sites, but few are still under the control of individuals, they live in there and it is their ancestral house which they do not intend to convert into any sort of museum or heritage site. One such example is the Braganza House situated at Chandor

owned by Mrs. Auria Braganza Pereira.

Mrs. Auria claims that she is the 14th generation of Braganza family “I am the 14th generation of this family tree and the only survivor as from my generation all others are dead, My children are the 15th generation and my grandchildren are of the 16th generation,” said. Mrs. Auria, though very old, but is a lady of substance, having a very deep voice and good

command over the language.

She is the only person in the family who knows the detailed history of this place and the story which we are about to unfold has been narrated by her.

According to Mrs. Auria, she is living in this house along with her children and grandchildren which is altogether 15 members. “This house was built in the 16th century but in 3 phases out which one of the oldest phase is around 500 years old. The first extension was built after 100 years (it means the first extension was done 400 years ago) and the second extension was done after 200 years, so altogether this house was constructed into three phases of altogether 300 years of gap,” She explained in detail.

Mrs. Auria also revealed that this is the only place after the old Goa which has the relics of St. Francis Xavier preserved therein, which makes this place a holy heritage structure of Goa. “In the chapel we have preserved one fingernail of St. Francis Xavier,” She claimed. According to her most of the colonial houses in Goa were built during the Portuguese reign by Portuguese rulers. In order to verify the facts about the conversion of religion in those days, we asked Mrs. Auria and she clarified our doubts saying that her ancestors were Hindu just like most of the Goans and after the entry of Portuguese they were converted to Christianity. Before the conversion, their family had a surname as “Desai” “My first ancestors were Hindu (Desai) and subsequently they were converted and this house was build after Portuguese came here in Goa,” She said.

Braganza Pereira was representing the embassy of Spain in Goa. “It is during that time those two chairs which are in the ballroom were gifted to him by the Portuguese ruler,” She said. This shows that her ancestors were having very good hold in Portuguese government during those days.

If you check the information on most of the online portals it will give you the wrong information about this place as they were perhaps gathered from the unreliable sources, one of the websites claims that this house is just 350 years old while according to the information given my Mrs. Auria it is more than 500 years old. There is one more thing which Mrs. Auria forgot to mention in the conversation and that is, this big mansion is divided equally into the two parts as this place was inherited by two sisters in the family. Since they were two daughters of this house both the wings were named after their husbands, the West wing was named after Menezes Braganza and East wing Braganza Pereira which is presently under the control of Mrs. Auria. The Old Portuguese styled façade gives the entry to both the wings which consists of total 24 windows and this is one of the longest ancestral houses in Goa. The whole structure of the house is made up of laterite and the chairs and tables in the garden area are made up of imported mosaic material during the Portuguese era.

entry of Portuguese and It was known as Chandrapur. After the Portuguese came to Goa they shifted the capital to Old Goa, also known as Velha Goa and after the spread of plague the capital finally moved to Panaji which remains as the capital of Goa till date.

Although this house is divided into two equal parts but the house of the east wing which we have visited is owned and maintained by Mrs. Aura Braganza Pereira and she calls it house and not a museum while the west wing which belongs to Late Mrs. Aida Menezes Braganza which, unfortunately, we did not get the chance to visit is apparently converted into the museum having more posh look inside but it does not have the essence of traditional old Portuguese house which is there is east wing beside that the east wing also has a grand ballroom and the chapel too. According to Mrs. Auria, they do not charge any fees for the entry to their house but people who visit their place do donate a small token amount which is used by the Braganza Pereira family towards the maintenance.

When we spoke to Mrs. Auria about the maintenance issue she may be facing such big place she said that “We opened this house for the tourist almost 50 years back but we never asked for any help from anybody, towards the entry, whatever visitors feels is fair they donate with their will,” she said. “We have a fleet of 6 people who keep the place upto-date,” said Mrs. Auria. “They come from Monday to Saturday and do all the cleaning work including Washing, cleaning and dusting, their task includes of cleaning the chandeliers and NOVEMBER 2015 \ INCREDIBLE GOA \ 15

When we asked Mrs. Auria whether she will be selling this place anytime in future as the maintenance cost is very expensive and no source of revenue generation is available she said that “I will never ever sell this place, it is our residence and I have lots of memories and emotionally attached to it� when I asked what does she thinks about her children she said that she has full faith in her children and behind her they will also maintain this place in the same spirit and they will never ever sell this place. India Travel Awards has its ďŹ rst successful episode of the second edition of the West India Travel Awards in Goa, attended by the who's who of Travel and tourism industry from India. It was a glittering gala event which was hosted by the Grand Mercure Resorts in Candolim, the ďŹ ve-star property situated in one of the most famous tourist destination of Goa on 14th October. The event night at grand auditorium erected in the lawns of Grand Mercure Shrem Resorts was attended by some of the well-known faces of the tourism industry. The event was graced by the Tourism Minister of Goa Shri Dilip Parulekar and Shri Nikhil Desai, Managing Director or Goa Tourism Development Corporation.

The ceremony commenced with the sweet welcome song by the gorgeous 'Singing Emcee' Ms. Dilruba, her magical voice truly captured the senses of the audience sitting in the festooned auditorium. It is said that thousands of pilgrims used to come to Diwar to wash away their sins. This article is to make you all aware about the history of Diwar and the current status of the historic places.

Portuguese landed in Goa in 1525 as the Commander Chief Alfonso De Albuquerque entered as wild fire destroying the empire of Yusuf Adil Shah which was Ela (Old Goa). From this day Portuguese dominion began on the soil of Goa. In the later years, Jesuits entered and consistently prepared and implement Christianity religious faith in Goa. Goa inquisition was ordered by Jesuits as an act of forcible conversions on the local people who did not accept Christianity.

The inhabitants of Diwar Island were the first victims of goa inquisition. This happened because Jesuits set up their base in Old Goa and the Diwar island inhabitants did not have any 24 \ INCREDIBLE GOA \ NOVEMBER 2015

choice but to rov down with canoes to Old Goa dock to live a day to day lifestyle. Goa inquisition was the worst conversion chapter in the History of Goa where people were tortured, burnt alive and many of the families also left Goa forever in the neighbouring states. More than 350 temples were destroyed in South Goa and many more in North Goa as well.

Porne Thirth in Diwar also faced a major blow of Goa inquisition.

The Saptakoteshwar Temple was originally built in Diwar by the Kadamba Dynasty. Adjoining the temple was built a beautiful holy pond carved into a laterite stone belt designed beautifully with light lamp spaces on all four

sides known as “Kurkuta” in Konkani. It is said that hundreds of years ago people would take a Holy Dip in this Holy Pond to get rid of their sins. The original Saptakoteshwar Temple was built out of Granite Schist and laterite Stone (Pashani Stone). It was destroyed twice in 14th century by the Bahamani Muslim rulers and in the 16th century by the Portuguese. The place where the temple was situated was called as Narve. Just few meters away the Candelaria chapel was built by the Portuguese after destroying the Saptakoteshwar Temple. The Candelaria Chapel was built on Kalbhairav Temple shrine.

It is said that the Saptakoteshwar Shivlinga was damaged and thrown inside a local well near Diwar Fort. It was Narayan Shenvi Suryarao Sardessai who shifted this Shivlinga overnight on the other side that is Dicholim. That place today is called as “Nave Narve” or “Nave Thirtha”. In 16th century Chatrapathi Shivaji Maharaja entered Goa and won the Dicholim Mahal from the clutches of Yusuf Adil Shah. He was informed about this

Saptakoteshwar temple destruction by the Portuguese on Diwar island and thereafter which the Shivlinga shifted to Nave Thirtha. On knowing this he raised orders immediately to rebuilt a new Saptakoteshwar Temple structure in Narve, Dicholim which was financially funded by him.

On 22nd October 2015, another historic day was created. The locals from Narve, Diwar celebrated the first Saraswati Pujan & Visarjan on this day.

After 450 years the Porne Thirtha was blessed with the divine glory in which the Narve Diwar locals will be blessed throughout generations. It all started with a group of youth who planned to get the lost glory of Porne Thirtha back. The credit goes to Prajyot Chodankar, Pritesh Chodankar, Sarpanch and Panch members and many more who had organised the Saraswati Pujan. The Holy Pond light lamp spaces were occupied with 108 beautiful oil lamps which give a pristine holy look to the Holy Pond. The programme started with an Aarti of Saraswati Devi followed by a Canoe procession in water and ended with a Visarjan of Saraswati Devi in water. The youth also floated air lamps in the sky giving the sky a glorified bright look. This historic celebration will be held every year from now on which will give the historic insight of Porne Thirtha for the generations to come.

Arun Kumar Pandey may not be a very familiar name to many, as the section of society he deals with at the moment, many of you may not like to speak out about it. It is called Prostitution, known as the oldest profession of the world as it has been mentioned in many kinds of literature. The hero of this story is the trendsetter into the area of curbing the organized commercial prostitution, which is operating in Goa, right under the nose of our lawmakers.

read about Arun and his activities in the local newspapers and I was very much fascinated with the kind of work he had taken up in our beautiful Goa which is perhaps the duty of our lawmakers but has been fulfilled by Arun. To find out more about his work in Goa I decided to meet him and make a feature which will help people of Goa as well as all our readers to know that what he is doing is not the work of lower dignity but it is the need of the day for a place like Goa where families from all around the world come to spend their quality time.

After having a talk on the phone for several occasions, I finally managed to meet Arun at his office based in Vasco. The setup of the office is very simple as most of the NGO offices in Goa. Meeting with Arun was very warm and fruitful and in this small meeting he put the light on his background and activities in Goa and rest of the parts of India and with the help of this article I would like to take you into the unknown world of Organized Commercial Prostituting which is the issue of concern for Goans today.

Arun told me that he is in Goa since 1997 it was the time when commercial sex workers were residing in huge number at the place called BAINA in Vasco. His purpose of coming to Goa was the part of his project which he had started in Mumbai in 1992. “After finishing my degree in law I year 1992 I joined the Tata Institute of Social Science where I did my post graduation in Criminology, it is the two years course and while doing my Criminology I had to simultaneously do the field work at Kamathipura, one of the biggest hub of sex workers in Mumbai.

This is the time I got exposed to

the term commercial sex workers and prostitution,” He said.

According to him, this field work gave him the insights to the world of flesh trade which exists in big scale right in the middle of the city and functions in a mysterious form.

That was the time Arun learned to deal with the situation of prostitution, he learned how to coordinate with police and judiciary while trying to rescue to victims brought into this sexual exploitation by their operators known as “Pimps”. “It was not only dealing with the sex workers, brothel keepers, and pimps, but I had to deal with the remedies for their rehabilitation which was the challenge in itself. The activities included running the day and night counseling, providing the medicines and providing the information about the HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) and STD (Sexually Transmitted Diseases).

While working at the red-light area I got an opportunity to work with police, court and protective homes, these are the places where sex workers are taken, for example if girl is rescued she needed to be taken into the protective home, presented before the magistrate and that was the time sex workers were treated as accused. If found guilty by the court they been sent to police otherwise in protective homes for the purpose of rehabilitation,” he explained.

According to Arun now the law does not treat sex workers as accused but they are considered as victims and their pimps considered as an accused.

After completing the one year of field work in Kamathipura, Mumbai Arun decided to move to Goa, the land of sun, sea and siesta but his migration was not to enjoy the climate of this beautiful

land but to rehabilitate the victims in Goa's red-light area. “After completing my project at The National Women Commission for three years, I traveled extensively throughout the India to study the various initiatives taken by NGOs and that was the time I came to Goa. After coming to Goa, I discovered the place called Biana which was Goa's red-light area. At that time, there was no organization to tackle the issues related commercial sex and prostitution. The place was saturated with the sex workers and brothel keepers from the neighboring states. I saw women were involved in soliciting the customers but in the case of rescue there were no facilities of rehabilitation to them. There was not the existence of human rights,” he explained.

According to him, in his 3 years of study in the segment commercial sex activities, he had designed a model which he wanted to implement into this small state and since Goa is much smaller than Mumbai and implementation were easier. “I feel that all the organized prostitution has similar ingredients of this model, based on that, the women sex workers considered as the 'commodity' and that was sold in the market by the pimps and brothel keepers who were the 'marketers or sellers' and the customers were the 'buyers', and I call it 'Organized Commercial Prostitution',” he explained. “To stop these activities it was important to reduce the new entry of victims into this market and at the same time after rescuing the existing victims put the sellers behind the bars. It was easier in Goa and I implemented the model very successfully here,” he added.

TREND SETTERS \ Arun Pandey mate and started his activities from one small place in Vasco town. “We started our office here in a small Ambedkar club premises which was not in use. Initially, we started working with the children to understand the dynamics of the market and very soon I realized that it is not easy to work on this project just with the help of just one person. We needed to build the community and, therefore, I decided to take the bull by the horns. I wanted the need to be felt by the locals, the people who were residing in that locality, all of them were not involved into the flesh trade business and hence the creation of demand against the illegal activities amongst these people was essential. Most of these people although not directly involved into the flesh trade but connected to it one or the other way and our job was to educate them and make them understand that whatever they are doing is not in their interest as outsiders think that everybody around that area is in prostitution business and which was not,” he explained. Arun started mobilizing the people from the Kate Baina slums to be a part of our movement and work against the prostitution.

Another situation that Arun faced was the existence of the Devadasi system. According to which, in the state of Karnataka, the young girls before attaining the puberty were dedicated to Goddess Yallama and once they are dedicated they cannot marry and the same girls later on forced into the prostitution and this was done with the help of local police. “We found out that there was a strong nexus between brothel keeper and police and two people or the NGO cannot manage to break this without the help of locals and we started mobilizing the youth 30 \ INCREDIBLE GOA \ NOVEMBER 2015

groups and we started taking the action on the basis of law, we also started rescuing the girls who were minor and we started taking the action against the people who were involved into this and within the time 5 to 6 years we managed to rehabilitate hundreds of girls and cleaned this place to quite an extent,” he said.

When Arun spoke to some senior police officials he was told that they do not visit the red light area at all, “How honest they were I do not know but one thing I don't understand that without visiting the red light are how they will be able clean it? And how they will rescue the victims?” he said. His approach was very professional to the existing situation. According to him, another problem he faced was the rehabilitation of the rescued victims and that was one of the biggest issues. “If we do not provide them employment they would go back to the same profession again as they have had no other source of income and to write off that possibility I decided to generate the employment to the victims,” Said Arun.

Everybody targets the women at the end without knowing who the victim is and who the exploiters are. “We started rescuing the women and educating the people.

We also started mobilizing the women and child welfare and protective homes which were not functioning properly for a long time. After rescuing the girls we started sending them to protective homes and the message was sent across that minor girls in the prostitution will not be allowed anymore and strict action will be taken against the culprits,” he said.

According to Arun, in the year 2004 major demolition took place in Baina due to which all the sex

workers were scattered across the state and keeping the control over flesh trade became more difficult.

Another thing which created an impact on flesh trade in Goa was the closure of dance bars in Maharashtra in 2005 that led to the entry of more sex workers in the state. “Goa being one of the major tourism destinations in India most of the groups of male tourist entering in the state were looking for the sex and that had increased the intensity of customers. Initially these men used to come to Biana in search of sex and it was easy to monitor and curb the activity but now due to the geographical spread of business it became more difficult to manage the same,” he said.

After the demolition of Biana many sex workers spread over various places in Goa in the search of customers at the same time many did not go for it and they remained jobless. “This was another challenge we were facing, the girls without job and with no income were more prone to switch back to the prostitution to take care of this problem we set up an Economic Rehabilitation Unit in the year 2006 for them at Sancole industrial estate in the form of Mechanized Laundry providing employment to these girls at the package of around Rs. 7000 salary per month. These units have the provision of ESI and Provident fund for its employee. We have the transportation services for these women whereby we pick them up and drop them back. We also have the crèche facility for their children. This is the unique service started in Goa by us does not exist anywhere in India. Our mission is to rehabilitate the victims so another Baina does not come to existence once again,” He narrated with a lot of enthusiasm.

According to Arun, many families survive on the income generated by these girls doing the work of prostitution. “It does not matter whether the girl is doing this work willingly or unwillingly if we find the one we straight away rescue the girl and try to find out who is the beneficiaries other than the girl which could be the lodge owners, Pimps, and customers.

The action is taken against all of them except the girl. There is a provision in the law which tells that regardless of girl found in sex trade she needs to be rescued first and the culprits behind this act should be put behind the bars and this way we will be able to break the market,” He said.

We used to bring them to protective home at Merces, which comes under Woman and Child Development to provide the rehabilitation services to victim girls which include the counseling.

“This is the time to do the counseling when they are out of the reach of traffickers, relatives, who had forced them into the flesh trade. We also provided them employment and found out that those girls were initially hesitant to accept the job but slowly accepted it. It is easier to work with the ones who were forced into flesh trade than those who are doing this willingly,” he added.

According to Arun, right from the day they started their operations in Goa they have reached out to as much 1500 girls and rescued them from the flesh trade. “We have also registered the cases against more than 100 traffickers involved in trafficking directly and indirectly. We have not only rehabilitated the victim girls but also sent them back to their respective homes where they belong to, these includes the girls brought from Russia, Thailand,

Bangladesh, Japan and Ukraine to put into the flesh trade. If the girl belongs to other countries we help facilitating their exit with the help of their respective embassies who helps in their documentation process till they are sent back,” he explained.

Another issue which Mr. Arun handles is the child abuse cases in Goa, which is a major concern of the day in our society, as most of the children are abused by their close ones, either friends or relatives and that is very difficult to crack. “In most of the cases the child victims do not come ahead to expose their exploiters and hence lots of cases are not reported in the first place. Child abuse does not define the region, it is difficult to say how many Goans and how much of outsiders are involved into the child abuse cases, but there are cases where the children are of Goan origin and abusers are also Goan. The child abuse happens in all communities and region,” he said. “We are concentrating on the child abuse, but it needs the help of other stakeholders of the society such as Parents, Teachers, Police and NGOs so that the abuser can be identified and action proper taken against them,” he added.

Just like any other social activists, Arun also receives the threat from the rogues of the society, the rumors are also spread against him but he does not care and keeps doing his work with a similar dedication which he was is doing for last almost 18 years. “Today everyone knows that we cannot get pressurized as we are working in this field for more than 18 years and we will not compromise in our work. We have also filed the cases against the influential people who tried threatening us. Today we have police with us since they

know that what we are doing is not wrong and they continuing to support us, other than that they also have the moral responsibility towards our society which they maintain,” he said.

“Annyai Rahit Zindagi, is the name of the organization which means Life without the Injustice and that is what our mission is all about to make sure that to see that people are not exploited and there are not injustices related to sexual violence,” said Arun. According to him, “Today we have separate departments for Narcotics, we have a dedicated police officer and we have NDPS court with special prosecutors, but we do not have the separate department to deal with human trafficking. There is one anti-human trafficking cell which is nonfunctional and exists only on records which I am aware of since we are the part of it. We don't have separate court though the law is provided.”

“Goa needs serious amendment in the law to handle human trafficking and prostitution in the state. People from neighboring state come in the search of sex and people on the coastal area facilitate their needs most of the time. The pimps roam on the north Goa beach belts with the album of photos of girls and try to lure the tourist. Some of the taxi drivers and pilots are also involved into such activities. We talk about the garbage and other issues, but nobody talks about the flesh trade openly which is a very serious issue today in our state. It also related to the tourism as nobody would want to visit the state with their families if they see someone buying a sex next door,” with these words Arun concluded.

Now setup eco-friendly resorts in green zone without conversion

The government keeps working on the new ideas and plans to create broader tourism structure in Goa. The initiative of the ecotourism promotion on the green zone is perhaps the new idea for giving the boost to the diminishing tourism in Goa. According to the news published by the local daily, in a way to give major boost to eco-tourism in the state, the cabinet has given the approval to an ordinance that will amend the Goa, Daman and Diu Town and Country Planning Act 1974, which allow the construction of eco-friendly resorts in the ecofriendly zones around the sanctuaries and national parks.

This new ordinance will be termed as the Goa Town and Country Planning (Amendment) Ordinance, 2015. The ordinance will be forwarded to the Goa governor, Mridula Sinha for her approval. According to the sources, the ordinance of “Eco / Agro Friendly Projects and or Resorts will allow only the singlestoreyed structures of purely temporary in nature that can be built in the eco-sensitive zones, the construction material used in the making of such structures

should be made up of eco-friendly materials only, such as Wood, particle boards or clothes for the living of tourists in the form of Camping sites, huts, tents and cottages. The structure build with such material can also accommodate the restaurants and other allied amenities.

The Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar has also specified that the eco or agro-friendly projects and or resorts can be setup in ecofriendly zone only which is not extendable beyond the 5% of the total land area, which is not forest land and cannot be less than 2 hectares. He also gave the green signal to those who are desirous to setup such resorts may apply to the planning and development authority in case the land is in planning area or chief town planner in case the land is in no planning area for the permission grants.

According to the sources, the process will start with the planning and development authority or chief town planner after the receipt of an application, the same will be scrutinized and if found to be valid, then the same will be forwarded to the town and

country planning board for the recommendation and finally to the government for the approval.

Once it is approved by the government, minimum three years permission will be granted to the application which is extendable for the period, which is not exceeding beyond three years. In case of the failure of making the application before the expiry period specified in the agreement, the fresh application will be required to make along with the applicable fees.

According to the Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar, this will help in boosting the hinterland tourism from the sand to the sea and this will also generate employment for the locals. It may be recalled that in the month of March this year, the chief minister in the budget session had assured to launch and eco-tourism initiative whereby the construction of the tents and huts will be permitted without the conversion of the land provided that such projects comes under the norms and which did not exceed 5% of the total land and subject to minimum of 2 hectares of land available for such activities.

The new development will bring many new investors into Goa, Maybe the locals as well as the outsiders. This will boost the tourism activities in Goa. The tourism which was limited to the sea and sand will now reach into the dense jungles of Goa. The new development will pull more local tourist to the state which will help to create more monsoon packages for the Indian tourist coming into the state. This will also raise the value of the jungle land which may be seen skyrocketing soon just like beach properties.

“Nirmon” First Konkani Movie Remade in Hindi and dubbed in 7 languages Konkani film industry has just started spreading its tentacles in Goa with some really good quality movies been produced recently by the new generation producers.

Though the budgets were small but due to its quality content most of them did well at the box office. Some even managed to get their place in international film festivals, but many of you may not be aware that the Goan film industry started flourishing in the early 60's but unlike the Mumbai film industry it did not reach to any destination and perhaps collapsed due to the lack of resources and audience.

The film industry in Goa is still facing the similar fate due to the limited geographical area and audience, but some quality contents produced recently has formed the waves of hope whereby Goan started feeling that they can invest into this industry. The recently produced movie “Home Sweet Home” is one such example which created the history at the box office in Goa. It perhaps is the first movie made at a low budget and was running in the Goan theater for the longest duration.

The first full-length movie was made on 24th April 1950 with title “Mogacho Anvddo” by Jerry Braganza from Mapusa under the

banner of ETICA (Exchange Talkies of India, China, and Africa) Pictures, and since then this day is celebrated as the Konkani Cinema Day and Mr. Jerry Braganza is known as “Father of Konkani Movie”.

Another landmark movie was produced and released in the year 1977 under the title “Bhuierantlo Munis” which was shot in USA, Paris and Russia and it was produced by Tony Coutinho and Chris Perry under the banner of Chripton Motion Pictures.

Here in this article we bring to you the glimpse of the Konkani movie called “Nirmon” (the Fate) which is based on Lord Tennyson's character Enoch Arden, produced in 1966 by Frank Fernand, alias Franklin Fernandes, under the private banner and it was directed by A. Salam having the lead roles of famous Tiatris C. Alvares who also wrote the screenplay and dialogues of this movie. The reason behind this movie getting upper hand amongst the other Konkani films was its remake in Bollywood in 1967 under the title “Taqdeer” which was produced by one of the biggest production company of all time “Rajshri Productions” and the same was subsequently dubbed into the seven different languages. It was directed by the original director A Salam.

The meaning of Nirmon is Fate.

The movie is about a not so wellto-do nuclear family residing in Goa, consisting of the music teaching husband, the wife, two daughters and a son. The economic hardships make the head of the family pick up a job on a ship. He leaves his very loving family (for which his own love is no way less) and promises

to be back at the earliest possible. The ship meets a seastorm on its way and our protagonist, though escapes but gets hit by amnesia. The family behind him, shocked to hear about his death, now faces even more hardships and not able to make both ends meet. The starvation of the children has a breakdown effect on the wife and bowing before the destiny, she agrees to marry her husband's rich friend who accepts her with her children.

Within her heart, she is still in deep love with her deceased husband and the children are still missing their lost father but the reality is quite different now.

Neither the mother nor the children are happy among the luxuries now available to them because everything seems useless and soulless to them in the absence of the man who was the loving husband for the wife and affectionate father for the children.

The head of their new family nowhere resembles him. He is a money-minded person, giving not a damn for any kind of sentiments. The Nirmon, which had set the ground for the breaking of the family again sets the ground for its reunion after many years when the man, living the beggar-like life of an amnesiac, suddenly regains his memory. Not able to resist meeting his family without any further delay, he rushes back to the native place, only to find how things have changed by just one stroke of fate. How the members of his lost family come in contact with him, how they recognize him and how the moving finger writes their reunion, is the remaining part of the film which is very interesting to watch.

TV MOVIE GOA \ Nirmon Goa is the backdrop of the story and the camera-work has been able to catch the beauty of Goa though no attention has been paid towards the life or the culture of Goa. The art director has done a good job in creating the poverty-stricken small house of the family before the separation and it is dusty, shabby condition after it is emptied by the family to move to the new family head's mansion. Overall, this black and white movie is a good watch not only for the sentimental viewers but also for them who are willing to watch it for sheer neat and clean entertainment.

The film “Nirmon” won two National Awards at the hands of India's then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. C Alvares (Celestino Alvares), known as the “King of Duets” received the award of best actor for this film. Nirmon had a powerful story and won the Certificate of Merit for regional films at the 13th National Film Awards, the first of its kind for Konkani cinema. The songs of Nirmon have also become

immortal. The music was released on Angel Records under EMI of The Gramophone Company of India, and also manufactured and distributed by The Gramophone Company.

Celestino Santana Francisco Alvares (1 August 1920 - 28 February 1999) known by his stage name, C. Alvares, was a Goan tiatrist, film actor, producer and director hailing from Saligao.

C. Alvares was specialized in composing and singing poignant duets on various social issues and for this reason and he was also known as the King of Duets. He acted in two of the most memorable Konkani films, including Amchem Noxib, Nirmon, Mhoji Ghorkarn, Bhuierantlo Munis and Uddta to Buddta. C. Alvares received the award for best actor for Nirmon while the film itself won a National Award. C. Alvares has written 107 tiatrs besides acting in thousands of tiatrs during the span of 60 years that he served the tiatr stage. Because of his lifelong work, he has been called the greatest contributor to the

konkani stage. He also produced the Konkani film Faxi Mogachi.

Shalini Mardolkar died in Bombay on 7th January 2013 Condolence Meet was organized by Tiatr Academy of Goa (TAG) on 14th Jan 2013 at Ravindra Bhavan Black Box. Not many tiatrists attended the Condolence meet although enough publicity was given in most dailies in the form of Adverts and news items, while it is considered that, this sort of attendance is more or less the same for all such TAG's condolence meets. How one can forget the song 'Dol Mhoje Bai' in 1966 film NIRMONN, According to the sources, most households in Goa sing the lullaby, including Goans, settled abroad. Shalini acted more in Gujrathi and Marathi dramas than in Konkani Tiatr (Drama) and yet she left behind some unforgetable memories such as her role in J P Souzalin 'Sat dukhi' where she acted as 'Saibinn' (Our Lady). The role was so perfect that the audience in the end lined up to kiss her (Saibinn) backstage.

Although now with the stiff competition and better standard of filmmaking it is very difficult to make movies in a smaller budget, but the movie like “Home Sweet Home” has seems to change the trend. One can still think of producing the good movies in Konkani and earn out of it provided it has some unique ideas incorporated into it.

Konkani cinema needs a recognition and platform, we are not sure how much government of Goa is doing the same, but personal efforts can surely change the picture.

DIVINE GOA \ Safa Masjid

Safa Masjid, The Architectural Fusion of the Deccan and Malabar The historic Safa Masjid situated in Ponda is one of the oldest structures built in 1560 by Bijapuri sultan, Ali Adil Shah. It is situated approximately 2KM away from the main city and right on the Panaji – Ponda road. It is one of the oldest Islamic monuments in Goa that survived the Portuguese acquisition.

he mosque was the focus of attention in a fairly extensive complex of gardens and fountains which lies in ruins today.

The rectangular prayer hall of the mosque rests above a high base and is capped with a pointed terracotta tile roof.

There are elegant Islamic arches decorating the walls. Remnants of octagonal pillars can be seen all around the Mosque perhaps these supported a covered courtyard was made to provide shade to worshippers.

There is a well-constructed water tank with small chambers with 'Meharab' designs nearby which is located to the south of the prayer hall unlike most mosques where it is located outside the main

entrance.

This has led to speculation that the tank may have been part of another religious structure which once stood there. Local legend also has it that there are hidden tunnels in the walls of the tank which connect it to a nearby water reservoir. This mosque is a venue of celebration during festivals of Id-Ul-Fitr and Id-Ul-Zuha, by the local Muslim community. There are rickshaws, taxis available at the main Ponda bus stand which can take you to the site of the Safa Masjid.

The Safa Masjid also known as the Shifa Shahourie Masjid This Islamic ecclesiastical structure is a historian's delight. The Safa

Masjid of Ponda is a very pertinent representative of medieval Goa's history and culture. Infact, the hustling modern town life of Ponda has not affected the serene, sublime and elegant period look of this great mosque. It has withstood the ravages of time attracting a large number of Muslim devotees, historians, tourists both domestic and foreign, and has been noted as an important heritage monument of Goa and India.

The Arabic word 'Safa' means clean, chaste and pure and the title beďŹ ts this beautiful structure which is devoid of

any mindless extravagance and grandeur. It is meant for the chaste, clean and for the pure at heart and a devout Muslim.

Among the mosques of the coastal towns of South India, the Safa Masjid at Ponda , in the state of Goa . provides a somewhat curious and unusual example, as the mosque is neither entirely in the style of the buildings of the Muslim settlers of Malabar nor in the style of mosques of the Deccan, which include Ponda before it was taken by the Portuguese in 1763, On one had the mosque is set on a high plinth and has doors, windows and niches with pointed arches in what may be called the “ Dakhaani” style , but the configurations of its prayer chamber surrounded by a colonnade, as well as the light structure of its wooden roof, conforms with the style of the Malabar Mosques. Its exceptional form alone makes the building worthy of investigation ,but even more so in view of its survival in an area long under the Portuguese, characterized as dedicated enemies of the Muslims and destroyers of Muslim buildings wherever they found them in South India.

According to the findings from the history, Goa was ruled by the Adilshahi rulers of the Bijapur Kingdom. Yusuf Adil Khan was the Turkish founder of this kingdom who ruled from 1489-1510. It was in 1510 that the Portuguese 'governador' Afonso de Albuquerque conquered Goa from the successor of Yusuf Adil Shah, that is his son Ismail Adil Shah who ruled from 1510-1534.

In the 16th century, the Portuguese conquered the Tiswadi, Bardez and the Salcete only from the Adilshahi rulers but Ponda and other parts of Goa

continued to be under the Adilshahi dynasty. Ismail Adil Shah was succeeded by his son Ibrahim Adilshahi I, who ruled from 15341557.

The greatness of the Safa Masjid lies not in what is left of the onetime prosperous religious complex but its ruins which vividly recapitulate the past glory. The most interesting part of the Safa Masjid complex is the huge tank with 44 'hammams' (hot air baths) dotting its four, interior sides in the typically Islamic Mehrab style archs. The tank has a flight of steps done up in the typically Hindu bathing 'ghats' style. This green rectangular tank holds mirror to the small mosque which stands elegantly facing it. The tank and the mosque is done up in the laterite stone masonry. The mosque originally was built up of the exposed laterite which was dotted with a number of Mehrab style arch and niches for people to pray accompanied with the original laterite pilaster. You can still see the remnants of the mehrab archs on all the four sides of the mosque where the top half of the mosque is plastered with a cream colour with chhajja (eaves) design, Persian style Mehrub double archs, pilaster with brackets. On the top half of the mosque, the 'mehrab' double arches are crowned with a beautiful lotus bud motif which adds to the serene beauty of this simple mosque. Here the mehrab style windows are square in shape.

The name of the mosque is sometimes given as Safa Shahapuri,sometimes as Safa Shabouri ,but mainly as Safa Masjid, The name most commonly known locally. The traditional date of AD 1560 given in some publications for the construction of the mosque is also doubtful this

date and the claim that the building was constructed by Adil Shah seems to have been first suggested by Dr. V.T.Gune in 1965 when he was director of Historical Archives of Goa .The same account has been repeated in later guide books, presumably after Gune's Claim.

While the mosque may indeed be existed during the Adil Shahi period or perhaps even earlier, there seems to be little evidence to suggest and exact date of AD 1560 (968-9 AH) as the mosque does not bear any inscription nor there is any other historical record mentioning the construction of the Safa Masjid or for that reason any other mosque in Ponda under any of the Adil Shahi Sultans. On the other hand Ponda was until 1769 a Muslim Town and would have had several mosques of different periods. To establish a more informed view of the building and perhaps suggest and approximate date for its construction we should consider not only the architecture of the building and its possible original form, but also the history of Ponda and the fate of the mosque, both under the Muslims and under the Portuguese.

According to the available information, the Safa Masjid was destroyed by the Portuguese ruler after they conquered Ponda or perhaps by their usual practice of setting up things on fire and that might have resulted into the fair preservation of the stone walls, but to almost complete disappearance of the original roof.

An early mention of the mosque appears in Lopes Mendes's report in 1886 of the region he gives an engraving of the building and records it's as “ the old ruins of the “palacio da Justica “ of the Moors, called 'Sabamossudo “ It NOVEMBER 2015 \ INCREDIBLE GOA \ 41

DIVINE GOA \ Safa Masjid is interesting that while the word Masjid is reflected in the recorded name , Mendes had apparently no notion of the true function of the building ,nor of course , of the age , let alone its founder. More interesting, however, is the engraving, reproduced showing the building to be partially roofless, and with a tree apparently growing in the middle of the prayer hall. However, some features particularly the lower parts of the original roof, which have been lost, were still extant at that time and, as we shall discuss, provide valuable information on the original form of the roof structure and have enabled us to produce conjectural reconstruction drawings of the building in its original form.

The building was in ruins till 1981 when it was described by J. M. Richards as a square structure with blind arcading on its raised on a platform and surrounded by remains, overgrown with vegetation, of a large tank and gardens. Though the building is little more than a ruin, large crowds still come to it on the big Muslim festival. The gathering of the muslim during festivals is worthy of attention. The small community of Muslims still living near the mosque seems to have been mainly responsible for maintaining the tradition of preserving the site as a place of worship. Furthermore, the location of the mosque outside the town walls and the gathering of the Muslims only on festive days may be an indication that the mosque was perhaps the idgah of the town. Although in the absence of any other place of worship it would not be surviving ruins of one of their mosques. From the Mendes engraving it also seems that the tank had remained in use.

The tank is set in the center of a platform about 48m.long and 32 m. wide, with six flights of steps and each 3m wide, leading to the water level, arranged with one set of steps at the east, another at the west, and a pair of steps at the northern and southern sides.

Between each pair of steps there is a landing area set four steps below the surface level, providing additional access to the water when the tank is full. The whole structure is constructed with blocks of roughly dressed red sandstone, and on each wall of the tank there is there are a number of arched niches, all of the same size, except those at either side of the steps, which are narrower in width.

Below the level of the niches, of the steps, which run all around the walls, lead to the bottom of the tank. Altogether the depth of the tank is about 5050m. For most of the year the niches are partially submerged, and even in the dry season water covers the four bottom steps of the tank.

One of the noticeable difference is the absence of the decorative winged form, which in Adil Shahi architecture crowns the arch and spreads wide into the spandrels Instead in the Safa Masjid the main arches are each decorated with a pointed spindle like finial uncommon but not unknown in the architecture of the Deccan and widely used elsewhere in India , as well as in the rest of the Islamic world . On the other hand the pointed arch, and particularly the ogee form, are unusual features in the architecture of the Malabar coast before the late Mughal period and the few examples in Calicut, Kodangalor and Cochin have a semi circular profile In Ponda ogee arches a pronounced feature of the facades must be a form imported from the deccan

perhaps a reference to Adil Shahi control over the strategic town.

Nevertheless, the differences in details between the arches at ponda and those of Adil Shahi buildings elsewhere may be an indication that the mosque is the work of local builders, not closely familiar with the architecture of the Deccan.

On the exterior are four corner pilasters with capitals which are set about 20cm. below a plain string course running all around the building and about 0cm. above the frame of the main niches above the string course may have been used as the support for the joists of the sloping roof of a colonnade which once ran around the mosque, an option shown in our reconstruction drawing of the section however the joists may have been set just below this string course, as can be seen in some other buildings in South India, such as the Mandapa extension of the 15th century Chandranath basti at Mudabidri where the string course stands as a pronounced decorative feature also indicates that the prayer hall of the mosque must have had a two tiered structure s what the engraving shows is not a single hipped roof in a ruinous state, but rather the lower tier of a roof, in fairly good state of preservation, while the entire upper tier has disappeared. In the mosques of South India the loft space is always accessible by a step- ladder, usually at the north side of the mihrab the loft space is used traditionally as the office of the imam or sometimes as a madresa or sometimes simply as a store room for items such as religious texts, floor covering of the mosque and decorations for festivals.

Tata Housing sells 250 flats for 100 crores, to be built on 5-acres mega project in Goa

One of the top-notch realty firms of India, Tata Housing has sold 250 flats worth around 100 crores online just in one day. In its proposed housing project which is coming up in south Goa. According to the sources, the Tata housing company is developing total 600 flats on 5 acres of land in Goa and prices of the same are in the range of 30 – 70 lakhs. This is perhaps first of its kind of project in Goa or may be India, which was promoted through the social media platform.

According to the process, the prospective buyers needed to be logged on and register themselves through their facebook account in which they have been given one unique code number known as “Invite Code”.

In its first round itself Tata Housing handed over 15,000 invite codes converting 250 of them into the sale of the flats. “We handed over 15000 unique codes last week out of which 250 were allotted the flats worth 100 crores in the first round,” Said Tata Housing officials.

Jaitley said that the constitutional award of 14th Finance Commission for sharing of tax resources between the centre and the states does not allow the scope for special status anymore.

“The 14th Finance Commission had come up with the constitutional award for the states and it has fixed a formula whereby the states will share the tax revenues with the centre,” he said.

Chaitanya Malik - The Young Engineer Turned Farmer of Goa This is the story of 22-year-old Chaitanya Malik who is an engineering graduate from Goa Engineering College, Farmagudi. Hailing from Pernem village in North Goa, this young lad always had an inclination towards the agricultural activities right from the inception. According to him his father is an associate professor at PES College in Farmagudi and who also actively involved in the agricultural activities and that led to growing his interest in the farming and after completion of graduation in computer engineering, instead of perusing the job technical field he decided to take up the farming as his career option.

It is unusual to find the young generation taking up the career in agriculture field in present days.

Most of them prefer to go into the hi-tech industry and work abroad on the fat salaries and hence the case of Chaitanya is unique over here. He is representing the section of a new generation which is ready to take up the agriculture as their career option and he is also trying to show them that career in agriculture is not the low profile job at all. He has proved it through his hard work and achievements. Chaitanya being highly educated could have persuaded his career in any multinational companies in India or abroad but deiced to stay in his village and work for the betterment of Goan Agriculture which needs the attention today.

“I am from Pernem and have done my primary and secondary and higher secondary education at Mustifund High School in Panaji where I was always a topper in my class and that prompted me to join the College of Engineering at Farmagudi. little confused at what to do, Engineering was my qualification and agriculture was my passion and finally passion won over the qualification and I made up my mind to continue into the agricultural field,” he narrated.

commercial point of view and selling the yields but for me agriculture means building the good ecosystem. For the people, the term agriculture is just farming but it have much wider perspectives which includes P i g g e r y, p o u l t r y, vermicomposting, recycling and much more,” he narrated.

He is interested in working for the cause and that means he just don't want to grow the vegetables in the field, but he also wants to help and promote this concept of agriculture in the young generation. He is also concerned about the rates that farmers get for their yield after putting the huge amount of hard work and time. “The issue of concern is, farmers do not get good rates for their yields due to the big chain of Merchant, Traders and Retailers eat up all the margins. I am not talking in general, but it is my own experience when I went to sell my production to traders they ask for the cost of Rs. 50 per kg while the same thing they sell to the consumer for Rs. 250 per kg which was the huge difference of margin,” he explained. Realizing that traders take advantage of the farmers, he decided to set up his own marketing unit for selling the production directly to the consumers. “I started using the social media and broadcasting of SMS to reach the potential consumers and received a very good response in the beginning. I also made the arrangements of the home deliveries to the consumers,” he said. Chaitanya believes that when the farmers take trouble of working hard in the field then why not put little extra efforts of delivering the goods to the consumers, that will increase their profit margins.

I have turned my shop into the farmer's market and our consumer is aware that we sell the goods at the best prices. In our shop we don't have scope for the bargain, it may sound little harsh but the farmer who works in the field 24/7 Planting, plowing, harvesting and taking it to market sitting in hot sun defiantly deserves better. It is very sad to see that farmers do not have dignity in our country compared to the educated section of the society and the professional has. In order to give the respect to the farmers we need to pay them what they really deserve,” he said.

According to Chaitanya, he is the only farmer who produces the broccoli in Goa as Broccoli is not grown in Goa at large scale and whatever stock of Broccoli comes in Goa it comes from the neighboring states of Pune, Kolhapur, Satara, Belgaum and Bangalore where Broccoli is grown at a larger scale. “Few officials belonging to the agricultural sector in Goa told me that I am the first and only one who grows Broccoli in the state. I may be wrong, but this is based on the information which I received from others. Broccoli has a good market in Goa but in select segment those who know the properties of this product,” he explained.

The guidance of my father helps me a lot in this.

My both the parents belong to an educational industry and they are very proud of me that I have taken up this rare profession which today's generation do not want to explore,” he said. It is not that Chaitanya never had any resistance from his family when he decided to come into the farming business.

He says that his grandmother was completely against this and according to her he was crazy to take up the farming after completing his computer engineering. “She used to say that I will easily get 30 to 40 thousand rupees salary if I work somewhere but I was never interested in making money that way, I always wanted to pursue my passion and wanted to work in the environment that gives me a peace of mind and while doing that I wanted to earn money and today I am doing the same thing. I am earning enough money to take care of myself and be independent while selling, my agriculture stuff and I am the supplier and distributor of all sorts of Kokum drinks,” he added

Chaitanya says that he wants to make the farmers aware of the modern technology and how to use the same to increase the production. Since the farmers have the main asset which is their land, the proper training and use of new technology will take their dream to next level. “Presently I am working on the new project of organic agriculture and I feel that within next five years there will be the boom in the field of organic farming as the people are becoming more heath conscious with the time. People have a lot of money and they are ready to spend for their better health.

According to me, it is high time that now people should realize that it is better to spend fifty rupees more today for healthy organic products, than spending 50 thousand tomorrow to cure the disease.

Organic products do not kill the virus (insects) but they prevent it from happening, making the product more healthy and chemical free,” with these words he concluded.

Most of the metros have higher crime rates due to this only. But Goa, being the small state in size, it reflects more here. The only solution to reduce the crime rate in any state could be the eradicating of slums and boosting the educational activities in lower income group people.
