Generally, food has many memories attached to it. Usually a certain food takes you back to a certain phase of your life, or an episode. A certain smell takes you back to the kitchens of your mommies, or your college cafeteria. Some or our life’s most intimate memories come flooding back just at the sight, smell and mere mention of certain food items. It is going to be different for all of us, because we all are different, we have grown up differently, and our early lives have been different. Just for instance, something as simple as a mango pickle takes me back to my grandma’s kitchen, from wheremy cousin and I would steal the jar and run to the terrace to spend an afternoon of finger licking goodness. Pumpkins always take me to the first time I tasted the pumpkin curry cooked by my mother-in-law. I had detested it until then, but that day I started loving pumpkin curry and until this day I love it made by her. Similarly, you all would associate memories to food. Does the smell of bread baking take you back to your childhood, where you would buy goodies for petty money from the nearby bakery?
The great thing about food memories is that they root us in a time and place, tell a story and make us all hungry. It all seems so wonderful, and it sure is. Food connects a lot of people, cultures and brings lives closer. It is much more than nourishment; it is the vehicle through which we communicate sentiments, express our creativity and create memories. And it is in the sharing of food with others that keeps us connected. Don’t we all like gathering around with family and friends with the center of attention being food? We all love to invite and be invited over meals. For all this and more, and to keep this love and tradition of food alive, I am going to be sharing with you a special recipe, which you can in turn use to connect to your family and friends, and create memories – memories that will bind you together with them. The first time I tried this dessert was while I was having some friends over for lunch. The dessert I had wanted to make turned out a failure, and this was done as a quick fix solution, but believe me it was more than what I expected, and so easy to do that it left me wanting to make it again very soon. Here’s what you will need: Prep Time – 5 minutes Cooking time – 15-30 minutes Serves – 6 Ingredients 6 bread slices To make rabri or milk custard ½ ltr (to be curdled) 1 ltr milk ¼ cup condensed milk 4 pods of cardamom 1 tbspn almond powder A big pinch citric acid For the sugar syrup ½ cup water ¾ cup sugar ½ tspn saffron essence ¼ tspn cardamom powder
