Visit the Majestic Lands of

Tarangire National Park! By Sakina Nanabhai

Looking for a quiet safari experience, that is off the beaten track and gives you a better chance to animal viewing, unlike the always-crowded national parks like Serengeti and Ngorongoro? We suggest you consider visiting the Tarangire National Park for a vacation! No more thinking over the idea, July to October makes the best time to visit the national park, so get ready with your cameras, binoculars, wide brimmed hats and safari shorts for an adventure like never before, karibu Tarangire! Credited to be the sixth largest national park in Tanzania and covering an area of approximately 2,850 square kilometres, the Tarangire National Park is located in heart of the Manyara Region. The nation8 | incredible dar | July 2014

al park is named after the Tarangire River that makes a major source of water for wild animals during the dry seasons. As a result, a number of animals migrate from Manyara to the Tarangire National Park. The vegetation at the Tarangire National Park is exceptionally diverse with the hilly landscape covered with high density of Baobab trees, tall grasses and lush bushes. Surprisingly, in spite of the dense vegetation, making it a great habitat for wild animals and awe-inspiring scenery, Tarangire remains a quiet and a widely unexplored national park, giving it another great reason to be explored over your vacations!

Wildlife Tarangire is famous for elephant migrations especially during the dry seasons, between the months of June and November, as the elephants migrate all the way to the Tarangire River to bathe in the river, spray water at themselves and quench their thirsts. Apart from the large elephant population, Tarangire also provides a safe habitat for wildebeests, Thompson’s gazelle, greater and lesser kudu, zebras, giraffes, buffaloes, elands, leopards and cheetahs. In addition, if you get lucky you could even get a rare glimpse of dwarf mongoose, oryx and generuk.

Birding

Tarangire is the largest breeding ground for birds! Photo: safaribookings.com

Home to over 500 various species of birds, and claimed to be the largest breeding ground in the world for bird species, Tarangire makes one of the finest birding destinations in the whole of Tanzania. The Silale Swamp makes one of the best breeding points for birds, and thus makes a must-visit spot for bird lovers. Therefore, if you are the kind who loves the cooing and chirping of the birds, and would love to go for an adventure that is not too over the edge, we recommend going for a bird watching safari at the Tarangire National Park.

Activities The Tarangire national park, although not frequented by many tourists around the year, as compared to the more popular safari destinations like the Serengeti and Ngorongoro National Park, yet offers a number of activities for its visitors to make their visit more memorable than ever. Apart from the usual game drive during the daytime, visitors also have options of going for a walking safari and night safari. Walking safaris are great to explore relatively unknown species of animals that one is likely to miss out from their game drive cars, and spotting animals from an unbelievably close proximity. While, night safaris allow the tourists to view some of the rare nocturnal animals that are hard to spot in the daylight. Although, the option of boat safari is still not available at Tarangire, but if you are willing to face some adventure, and not scared to spend a night in the jungle, fly camping trip can be a great option to explore!

Getting There The Tarangire National Park is although less popular among tourists, it surprisingly makes one of the most easily accessible national parks in Tanzania. If you are planning to visit the Tarangire National Park for your vacations, below are some great options through which you can easily explore the national park. By Road

The Tarangire National Park is located on the northern safari circuit of Tanzania that joins the Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti National Park. Therefore, the national park can be easily accessed through a smooth road, with Arusha town as the starting point.

By Air

There are a couple of options to get to the Tarangire National Park through air. Flying to the Kilimanjaro International Airport makes a popular choice among the tourists. The distance between Kilimanjaro Airport and Arusha town is around 46 km that can easily be accessed by road. Another option is to directly fly to the Arusha Airport from Dar es Salaam and start the road trip to Tarangire from there. Tourists coming in from abroad can also fly to Nairobi, Kenya, then get to Arusha by a bus, and start their game drive from Arusha town. Charter Flights If you wish to avoid the long drive from Arusha to Tarangire, charter flights can be organized from Arusha with a stopover at the Serengeti National Park.

Tarangire National Park offers a great adventure to tourists who are willing to explore a widely unfrequented location! So, if you are planning for a trip that would not only take you off your busy routines, but also help you make some great memories to remember your entire life, we suggest going for a vacation at the Tarangire National Park! The hilly terrains, the lush vegetation and the abundance of wildlife, make Tarangire a majestic land in itself! 10 | incredible dar | July 2014

EXPLORE THE HISTORICAL & BEAUTIFUL ZANZIBAR ISLAND

By Ilona Avril Fernandes

Located just off the Tanzanian coast, Zanzibar is one of Africa’s best island destinations, and ideal for individuals looking for a rich history, culture and experience. Zanzibar offers stunning beach retreats from where you can explore the Spice Islands and many other fascinating attractions. Alternatively, it is perfect for someone willing to take time off to simply relax and watch the world go by. To get to this breathtaking island, you can either fly using low cost carriers or if you are an adventures one, you can opt for a 2 hour boat ride; the commencement point of your journey being Dar-es-Salaam city. There is also an option for international

flights to land directly in Zanzibar Island. The island boasts a number of beautiful white sand beaches with turquoise blue water. The sea is amazingly calm with lukewarm water, ideal for swimming or scuba diving. It is an idyllic location if you are interested in a beach holiday in paradise. The most beautiful beaches in Zanzibar are located on the North at Nungwi beach and the hotels you can stay at include; La Gemma Dell’Est, Ras Nungwi, The Zanzibari Hotel, Mnarani Beach Cottages, The Royal Zanzibar, Double Tree Hilton and Hideaways of Nungwi among others.

If you are into history, then take note to visit Stone town which is the main city in the island. It consists of narrow alleys, shops, houses, bazaars, and restaurants. Speaking of restaurants, ‘Mercury Bar’ is a lovely location at the sea front named after the famous Freddy Mercury of the pop group “Queen” since he was born in Zanzibar.

When travelling to Zanzibar, most people focus on the coastal experiences but visiting the Jozani Forest can surely contribute to your highlights. The Jozani Forest is one of the few places where you can see the rare Zanzibar Red Colobus Monkeys. They are endemic to the island and interestingly have no opposable thumbs like most primates.

The best way to experience Stone Town is to simply walk the streets and take it all in. You will learn of various colonies that came to rule Zanzibar, the places they used to live in, the rich culture of the Zanzibaris as well as the must try street food- Urojo, Zanzibar Pizza, Mkate Mayaia, Haluwa, Mabuyu and Zanzibar bread. A spice tour is a must when you visit Zanzibar. Just outside Stone Town are numerous private plantations. Spices include cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, pepper, tikki, cumin, saffron and many more. A guided spice tour will provide you with a lot of information about all the spices as well as their uses in herbal medicines apart from cuisines. After you have visited the plantations you will understand why Zanzibar is known as ‘The Spice Island.’

The most noticeable thing you will see when you enter Zanzibar, are the huge and uniquely carved and decorated doors. Especially in Stone Town these doors can be seen all over the town, even in the narrow alleys as the entrances for private residences. The memorial Museum entrance door makes one of the oldest carved doors in Zanzibar dating back to 1694.

Common Skincare Myths Exposed! By Sakina Nanabhai

One can easily survive a bad hair day by hiding their hair behind a huge hat, or wrapping a scarf around their head but when an ugly zit decides to make a spot on a pretty face, the only solution that one can think of would be to ground themselves until the zit, and the ugly marks are gone. No wonder, the first thing every woman wishes for when she wakes up in the morning is – fresh, beautiful and flawless skin, always! Therefore, without a surprise, when it comes to skincare tips, we have heard plenty of do’s and don’ts, which makes it even hard to separate the fact from the myth. However, worry no more, since we have come up with a list of common skincare myths that have been there for long, but now it is about time you bid them goodbye, and know the facts!

Myth: Dry skin cause wrinkles Fact: Although, oily skin may create a great defense against wrinkles as oily skins tend to have higher testosterone levels, however, that does not mean dry skin is prone to getting wrinkles! The major causes of wrinkles are sun damages, excessive muscle movements and low oestrogen levels in women. So, if you are worried about your dry skin causing wrinkles, it is maybe because of low oestrogen levels or too much of sun damage, no need to blame your skin type anymore!

eryday to protect your skin from the harmful UV rays. It is generally recommended to apply sunscreen after every two hours. Yes, that can be a lot to do, but even on cloudy days, the UV rays can penetrate through, leaving behind no other option than wearing a good layer of sunscreen every day.

Myth: Chocolates and greasy foods cause acne

Myth: Sunscreens are only for sunny days Fact: Cloudy day or sunny day, sunscreens are a must! Even if you cannot feel the sun on your skin, does not mean the UV radiation is not reaching you either. So, make a point to apply a healthy coat of sunscreen ev-

Fact: In contrary to the general assumption, recent researches suggest consumption of greasy and oily food does not cause acne. Consuming oily food, may not be particularly harmful to your skin, but consumption of foods containing high levels of carbohydrates can easily cause breakout of pimples, particularly for those skin types that are prone to acne. For the chocoholics out there, there is a good news! Recent reJuly 2014 | incredible dar | 23

searches say, eating chocolates does not cause acne. Instead, it is caused by dead skin cells and excess of skin oil, which has hardly anything to do with the kind of food you eat, or the amount of chocolates you gobble! So, eat whatever you wish for without worrying about acne. Nevertheless, it is always a great idea to exfoliate and cleanse your skin on regular basis.

we hurriedly shaved hair off our skins, as the hair always seem to grow out to be thicker, it nevertheless does not mean thicker hair for a lifetime!

Myth: Shaving makes hair grow back thicker

Myth: See a pimple? Pop it to get the puss out! Fact: Popping pimples to take out the puss makes a common practice used by many to quickly get rid of pimples. Although, popping the pimples to release the puss might feel good at first, but in reality, a lot of the puss actually stays there and gets deeper in the skin, to cause even worse inflammation, and even scars! Therefore, no matter how ugly you think your pimple is, it is always a better idea to leave it the way it is, instead of popping it altogether. Popping your pim24 | incredible dar | July 2014

Fact: Another common myth that is far away from the reality is the assumption that shaving makes the hair grow back thicker. We have all been through the situation when our waxing lady finds it hard to pull thick hair off our skins, and the first question she asks is, did you shave before this? Well, it might be hard to believe but no, shaving does not make the hair grow back thicker, it although gives that impression as once you have shaved hair off your skin, the hair that grows back are the blunt edges, that are generally thicker. However, once you wax or pluck your hair off, you remove the entire follicle, so the hair that comes back, grows all over again, and does not appear to be as thick. Although, we all might have regretted those moments when

TANZANIAN TRIBES YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT By Sakina Nanabhai

Discover The Tanzanian Tribes! While watching movies like The Gods Must be Crazy, and various documentaries on the African tribes, we might have learned a little about the tribes in Africa, that make a world for themselves in the jungles, completely secluding themselves from the rest of the world. However, while living in the African continent ourselves, do we really know how real these tribes are? No matter, how intrigued we might be to learn more about such tribes, the question nevertheless is do we actually know enough? Well, to put your knowledge to test, and of course answer all the mind-boggling questions about Tanzanian tribes, we have come up with a list of 5 legendary tribes in Tanzania that would leave you with another great reason to explore our beautiful country to its fullest!

1. MASAAI

While living in Tanzania, the Maasai is probably one tribe that we have become quite familiar with. Bargaining at Maasai markets and using the Maasai handicrafts has become a part of our daily lives. Luckily enough, a safari trip to Serengeti or Ngorongoro also offers a chance to visit one of the many Maasai villages on the way, and interact with these friendly people. The Maasai make their living by cattle rearing and producing various handicrafts that have gained immense popularity and demand in the international market, over the years. The Maasai are generally recognized through their traditional clothes in red, blue and black colours wrapped around their bodies, accessorized with handmade colourful beaded and wooden jewellery that signifies various aspects of the Maasai culture. 28 | incredible dar | July 2014

2. HADZABE

The Hadzabe tribesmen are born hunters! Photo: africantrekksafaris.com

If you are looking for an African tribe that resembles the most with the Bushmen of the Kalahari tribe, featured in the movie, The Gods Must be Crazy, then Hadzabe is the tribe in Tanzania that you should pay a visit to. The Hadzabe tribe lives in complete seclusion from the rest of the human population, and is

probably one African tribe that is still very similar to its ancestors in terms of their current way of living. Time for a quick fun fact about the Hadzabe tribe – The Hadzabe tribesmen are the only people allowed to hunt in Serengeti, as hunting is the only way they provide for themselves!

3. SUKUMA In contrast to the Hadzabe, the Sukuma makes one of the largest tribes in Tanzania, which has drastically changed its way of living over the years. The Sukuma population reaches over 5 million in Tanzania that is scattered all over the country, from small villages to even developing cities like Mwanza, Shinyanga, Geita, Simiyu, Tabora and Dar es Salaam. The Sukuma tribesmen living in rural areas are cattle grazers and farmers, producing corn, potatoes, cotton and rice that they mostly use for domestic purposes. The main languages that the Sukuma tribesmen speak are Sukuma language and Swahili. The Sukuma believe in a number of religions.

4. CHAGGA

The Chagga tribe making the third largest group in Tanzania inhabit the north of Maasai Steppe, the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru along with a few villages near Moshi. The Chagga tribe is widely known to be a hardworking group of people and are credited for building an irrigation system that carries water up to 180 meters above the river level. The Chagga tribe uses this irrigaA traditional Chagga hut. tion system to make use of the Photo: wikipedia.org Mbeke plant for the production of local beer. Chagga owing to its modern methods of irrigation and farming is relatively a well-to-do tribe in Tanzania. Moreover, being one of the first tribes to accept the modern ways of lives gives them an economic advantage over other tribes, as they have gained better access over health care and educational facilities over the years.

5. MAKONDE

Another tribe that has not changed its way of living over the years, has to be the Makonde tribe. Credited to be one of the five major tribes in Tanzania, the Makonde tribesmen are known for their intricate woodcarvings that has gained a place for itself in the international markets as well. However, in spite of the popularity gained over the years due to their woodcarving skills, the Makonde tribe has managed to preserve its culture in the purest forms, and is known to be one tribe that has not changed its way of living since the colonial developments. 30 | incredible dar | July 2014

While planning vacations within Tanzania, the t wo major options that we usually struggle to choose from are, going either for a safari trip, or to one of the beaches in Zanzibar or Dar es Salaam. Little have we known about these tribes living in our own country that make a place for themselves in the jungles and villages of Tanzania, away from the hustle bustle of the everyday city life. Therefore, in case you are planning an excursion that is out of the ordinary, and are willing to know a little about the side of Tanzania that is widely unheard of, we suggest a trip to interact with these lesser known of tribes, and know their way of living. Tanzania is undoubtedly full of surprises!

Here’s what you will need: • 2 cups Basmati Rice • 1 cup Mixed Vegetables (Cubed Potatoes, Carrots, Cauliflower, French beans) • ¼ cup Green Peas • ¼ cup Sweet Corn • 4 tbsp Vegetable Oil • ½ tsp Mustard Seeds • 3 Onions, finely sliced • 3 Green Chillies, finely sliced • 1 tsp Red Chilli Powder • ½ tsp Turmeric Powder • 1 tsp Corriander- Cumin Powder • Salt to taste • A Cinnamon Stick • 1 ½ tsp Cumin Seeds • 4 Cloves • 3-4 whole Cardamom • 2 Star Anise • ½ tsp Black Pepper Powder • 4 Tomatoes, grated • ½ cup yoghurt, blend first for a few seconds to make it fine • 2 tbsp Cashew Nuts • Oil for deep frying

How to make the Biryani: • Wash the rice well in clean water for 2-3 times, rubbing the grains in your palms. • Add 3 ¾ cups water, salt to taste, cashew nuts and the rice in a sauce pan and bring to boil. Lower the heat, cover the pan and let simmer until cooked. • Deep fry all the vegetables including the peas and set aside. • Heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, green chillies, cinnamon stick, cloves, cardamom and star anise and stir on low heat for 30 seconds. • Add the onions and sauté for a minute or until they turn golden brown. • Add salt to taste, red chilli powder, turmeric, coriander-cumin powder and black pepper powder and stir. • Now add the tomatoes and sauté until you start to see oil coming up the sides. This is how you can tell the tomatoes are cooked. • Add the yoghurt and stir for about 10 seconds and finally add the fried vegetables and sweet corn. • Mix in the cooked rice with light hands to avoid the grains from breaking and let sit on a low flame for 2-3 minutes for the flavors to blend in. • Garnish with coriander leaves. • For extra taste, sprinkle some fried sliced onions over the biryani and serve hot with yoghurt and pickle. 32 | incredible dar | July 2014

Beef Samosas Ingredients: • 1 kg Minced Beef (preferably leg piece, no fat, double minced) • 3 Onions, chopped very finely • 3-4 Green Chillies, chopped finely • 2 tsp Corriander-Cumin powder • 1 tsp Cumin Powder • 1 tsp Turmeric Powder • 1 tsp Garam Masala • Salt to taste • 1 tsp Garlic Paste • 1 ½ tsp Ginger Paste • 1 bunch of fresh coriander leaves, chopped • Juice of one Lemon • Oil for deep frying • Samosa Pastry Sheets (recipe available on www.pikachakula.com)

Method: • In a sauce pan, sauté the mince, ginger and garlic paste, chillies, coriander-cumin powder, cumin powder, turmeric powder, salt, half of the coriander and half of the lemon juice. • Stir the mince constantly over medium heat to avoid lumps from forming and make sure it has dried completely. The mince will change to a brownish color. • Whilst hot, add the onions and mix together for about 2-3 minutes on low heat. • Make sure not to overcook the onions as they may release water and cause the mixture to become soggy. • Take the pan off the heat and add the garam masala, rest of the lemon juice and chopped coriander. • Leave the mixture to cool before filling the Samosa Pastry wraps and folding them into the classic triangle shape (learn how to fold the pastry at www.pikachakula.com) • Deep fry until golden brown and garnish with lemon wedges.

Squeeze the plastic cup to create an oval shape, and trace it twice over the white sheet of paper.

Neatly cut over the traced line to get two oval shapes.

Use the back of the plastic glass to trace a pair of circles over the black A4 sheet and cut them out as well.

Apply glue over the black circles, and stick each over the white oval shape cutouts to make big googly eyes.

Apply glue over the backside of the eyes.

Stick the eyes right above the red frame cutout.

There you have it, a cute storage to throw in toys, stationery and other accessories.
