2003-2013

Over the past decade, I have been fortunate to visit some amazing, beautiful and inspiring locations. When I started to write down a list some of the places I have been to and the length of time spent travelling to them and then exploring, I felt very privileged to have been in the position to make these journeys and then have the pleasure of recording on canvas and paper what I had seen.

One of the many pleasures of travelling is that there is always the possibility, even probability, of a new vision, an unexpected inspiration which springs out at you equally surprisingly whether seen from a bicycle, a car window or simply walking along a beach.

It is essential to be prepared, even with just a scrap of paper and pencil, for that never to be repeated experience of a cloud shape or the rainstorm that appears in the distance from a dark corner over the mountains, where a few seconds earlier the sun shone. Often, it is the soft light of early evening which transforms otherwise unappealing landscapes into atmospheric and charming vistas. It is impossible to ignore these glimpses of how light plays tricks and changes the way we see things and, therefore, how we feel about them.

Working from sketches and with some photographic back up, I like the development of images in my head when memory plays its part in interpreting the scribbled sketchbook shorthand of storms, sunsets and deserted shorelines.

It can be months or even years before paintings emerge and, because of this, they are less stilted and controlled. The senses which triggered the inspiration to paint any particular subject seem to be heightened by this drawn out process, the end result becoming more about the feelings experienced at the time rather than some flat, unemotional observation of the scene.

Apart from exhibitions dedicated solely to the display of paintings of specific locations, like, “Visions Of India”, “Seychelles Collection” or “Impressions Of Scotland”, it hasn’t always been appropriate to show some of these images in exhibitions of Recent Paintings.

In “TEN”, paintings from so many different locations can now come together as a collection of works from my travels over the past ten years.
