For Those In Peril DEREK HARE

A Message from the RNLI COLC Chairman This exhibition of Derek Hare’s work has been some years in the making. It came about during an exhibition that Derek held in the City of London several years ago where he wanted to support the RNLI and contacted the RNLI City of London Committee to discuss how this could work.

Since then the idea of having a Derek Hare exhibition celebrating the RNLI through his art work was born and it was very fitting that this has coincided with the 125th anniversary of the RNLI City of London Committee.

Coming from a largely seafaring family in South Shields, home of the Wouldhave Self Righting Lifeboat, invented in 1789, means that Derek has always had a strong connection with the sea.

He is passionate about the sea and it inspires much of his work in various locations around the world. His paintings depict how fickle the sea can be with works of tranquil seascapes of the Caribbean and Seychelles to the tempestuous waters of the North Sea, the latter being very apparent in the main piece of this exhibition which Derek has painted for this event, “For Those in Peril”. Here he celebrates the bravery of the RNLI volunteers who venture out into treacherous seas to save the lives of others.

The RNLI and I would like to thank him for the time and effort he has put in by organising this splendid exhibition.

The funds raised from this exhibition will be used to support Tower Lifeboat Station on the Thames which carries out vital work for the benefit of the citizens of, workers in and visitors to the Cities of London and Westminster and beyond.
