IRELAND’S FIRST EVER EUROPEAN ARCHITECTURE ASSEMBLY TO TAKE PLACE THIS SUMMER The European Architecture Students Assembly Ireland 2008 (EASA Ireland) was launched by Ruairi Quinn TD today, Monday 10th March 2008, at the Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland (RIAI). This is the first time for Ireland to host the annual event in its 27 year history. EASA will bring together 400 design students from 50 European countries for two weeks. Workshops, lectures, debates, exhibitions and excursions will take place across locations in Dublin and Letterfrack, Co. Galway from 9th to 24th August 2008. The theme for EASA 2008 is ‘Adaptation’ and a series of events, including public lectures with prominent Irish architects, will address issues such as sustainability, suburban sprawl and rural housing. Launching the event Ruairi Quinn TD, Labour Party Spokesperson on Education & Science said, “There was never anything like this in my generation. The partnerships with other European countries are vital for highlighting Ireland’s highly-influential professional society. This is a great opportunity not only for the dedicated people involved but for the host locations like Letterfrack which will be reinvigorated by the multi-disciplinary and multicultural activities.” Speaking at the event, Seán ó Laoire, RIAI President said, “The RIAI is strongly supportive of this celebrated and unique event. Encouraging cooperation between students from across Europe is vitally important for this generation. This is especially relevant when it comes to creating innovative building solutions to global challenges such as climate change.” Speaking about the programme of activities Hugo Lamont, EASA Ireland Co-ordinator explained, “Ireland has clearly undergone massive changes. As architects, urbanists and planners, it is fundamental to actively analyse the adaptations and changes that have come to pass in the space of a generation. Existing models of development, rapid suburbanisation and subsequent sprawl are some of the important issues which will be addressed at the workshops. “One of the flagship workshops is an international design and building competition Green Room. Entrants are asked to invent a new learning space where children can find out about sustainable and environmentally friendly living. The 28th Assembly will be hosted by Letterfrack Furniture College, Co.Galway and is supported by major public and private sector sponsors. TELEology description We are interested in the idea of observing, of monitoring, of recording the conception, growth and birth of ideas, an often painful, often joyous process. Teleology is “the study of evidences of design in nature”. Thus, taking this idea as our inspiration, we wish to study, analyse and record the development process of other workshops as they examine the theme of adaptation @ EASA008. We will coordinate the documenting of EASA 2008 on digital video. To do this we hope to invite professional consultants from Ireland’s ever blossoming film industry to discuss approaches to digital filmmaking. We hope to exploit the fecund creativity of the EASA populace for ways to investigate how digital media can best engage with the creativity of architecture. This should result in a piece that will examine not only the EASA event but also the varying ways the participants interpret the meeting of the moving image and Architecture. Further to recording the assembly, the workshop will be invigorated by ‘24 hour video’ modules. To complete these modules the participants will have no more than 24 hours to script, shoot and edit a three minute video on varying themes with strict parameters re theme and content, each grounded on the umbrella theme of adaptation. We are negotiating terms with a number of interested television stations and production companies.

European Architecture Students Assembly 2008 taking place in Dublin - Letterfrack Archiseek / Ireland / News / 2008 / February 12 The 28th European Architecture Students Assembly will take place in Ireland from the 9th to the 24th of August 2008. More than 400 students of architecture and related disciplines from more than 40 countries will converge on Ireland for 2 weeks of lectures, workshops, debate and discussion on the chosen theme 'adaptation.' The EASA Winterschool was hosted by DIT Bolton Street School of Architecture in 1991. The initial 3 days of the event will take place in Dublin where a series of lectures, exhibitions, discussions and tours will engage the public. The student participants will then travel to Connemara, effectively taking a section through Ireland. The remainder of the assembly will consist of workshop activities and lectures in the Furniture College GMIT Letterfrack at the foot of Connemara National Park. Workshops will include 1:1 constructions, new media experiments and discursive think-ins. The event is being organised by a team of young graduates and students from the schools of architecture in UCD and DIT Bolton St. The organising team won the right to host the event having travelled to Moscow in November 2007 to present their proposal and having prevailed over rival bids. The chosen theme 'adaptation,' relates to the dramatic changes that have taken place in Irish economy, society and culture in the last 15-20 years and how they have impacted the built environment. Student architects transform an Atlantic village Lorna Siggins, Western Correspondent
DESIGN: SLEEPING ON scaffolding, mopping out shower blocks , and building a bird hide from bales of straw are not quite the activities that one associates with an architectural career. However, several hundred students are challenging their own perceptions about their professional role, as well as testing their constitutions, as they transform the village of Letterfrack into one large architectural exhibition. “We know that some people doubted us when we told them that Diamond Hill was right behind us,” Sean Feeney, director of the European Architecture Students’ Assembly, laughs. “As for the Inagh valley, you could barely see it in the blanket of cloud and sheets of rain when we were coming through by coach.” The 360 participants from across Europe and Latin America are holding their annual assembly for the first time in Ireland, on the theme of “adaptation”. Relocating to the west from Dublin over the past week has been an integral part of the experience, in adapting to a change of pace, scale and context in a small village on the edge of the Atlantic. On arrival at the Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology furniture college Connemara West campus, the students were allocated “lodgings” in bunks made of scaffolding under the shelter of two large circus marquees. They were given a roster for cleaning, waste sorting and meal preparation, and the schedule for workshops and lectures. The workshops, based in canvas domes, outbuildings and in the campus crèche, range from furniture design to ethical architecture. “Kraftka”, for instance, is a timber-built corridor space fitted with audio, video and light installations. As tutor Dijana Omeragik of Macedonia explains, the structure is intended to make the observer feel “disoriented” as he or she walks through it. “Too Cool for Stool” is the name of another workshop, led by Mira Uzonovic and Alexander Popovic of Serbia. “We try to avoid using any nails or screws as we make small pieces of furniture from wood and glue,” Uzonovic says. “Zauna” is a mobile timber sauna built by Italian tutor Eros Laini and team. On completion, it will be transported to Renvyle pier and fitted with its stove. “You have your sauna, you jump into the Atlantic after!” Laini says. The “Green Room” is a sustainable, mobile classroom which provides an alternative to the plague of portacabins in overcrowded Irish schools. Out in the furniture college courtyard, a pavilion entitled “Lunch Box” designed by Dublin School of Architecture graduates Dermot Reynolds, Ronan Costelloe and Joe McMahon, is meant to represent “an inverted mountain contour range’’. Some of the students are also working with the National Parks and Wildlife Service in Letterfrack on a birdhide made from straw bales which will be a permanent feature. The projects will be finished this weekend in time for the final exhibition. The exhibition is open to the public from 3pm until 8pm on Saturday, August 23rd.
