Urban Development Project

Miami is a cultural confluence of Latin America, the Caribbean, and southeastern Florida. OASIS preserves this unique convergence and its fruits of labor in a sheltered urban escape.

Four major goals are harnessing and expanding the area’s existing creative economies and cultures; linking previously divided neighborhoods with new modes of transit in a lush harbor setting; creating a community refuge in the form of both climate resilience and anti-displacement measures; and preserving natural, open areas by incorporating

sustainability features throughout the space. It results in a haven for makers, travelers, explorers.

In the near future, Miami will change rapidly due to climate change. OASIS safeguards the community from this unpredictability. Car parks are converted into impervious shelters, each equipped with provisions to sustain safety-seekers. In addition, the train station features smart modules responsible for producing energy from solar panels and harvesting and storing rainwater in below-platform cisterns.

The surrounding neighborhoods and existing site had several makers’ spaces and cultural centers.

A makers’ corridor sprouts forth and weaves its way along the western and southern edges.

28th Street is no longer accessible by car; it is dedicated to pedestrians and cyclists. A comprehensive bike plan extends through the site. Murals lining the first levels enhance the pedestrian experience.

The floodline, a great threat to the site, will soon encroach upon its eastern border. OASIS has rainwater collectors, and solar panels and gardens to mitigate flood. Green spaces have increased by 400,000 ft2.

INTERIOR SHELTER AND CAR PARK:

As the need for cars declines and the frequency of disasters increases, car park spaces will become interior shelters. Walls are sealed with strengthened concrete to prevent seepage of flood waters. Shelters are equipped with energy storage, non-perishable foods, medicine, and potable water.

SMART MODULES:

The train station features smart modules responsible for producing energy through solar panels and harvesting and storing rainwater in below-platform cisterns.

AXON GARAGE ENERGY HUB:

The additional remote parking structure stores the energy produced from the various smart modules for future uses, including the expected rise in electric vehicle owenership.

TEXSUN - TECHO HOUSE Solar Decathlon Finalist

The project is an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU), located in the old African-American Blackland Neighborhood of Central East Austin. The house prototype features a 1-story, 2-bedroom, 1 and ½ bath and the L-shaped base plan is made up of two main prefabricated modules 14-feet by 33-feet.

The mild winter climate in Austin allows for indoor-outdoor living from fall through spring. The L-shaped plan configuration creates spaces that blur the lines between inside and out and transforms the traditional “living area” of a small house.

Operable patio doors connect the living area and the hallway to an adjoining outdoor deck. The northwestern facing orientation of the house is heavily shaded by a series of mature trees.

I have been part of the architecture team and worked on the overall design process and the plan configuration, also focused on the sun studies, daylight strategies, windows and shades, the artificial lighting system, and rainwater harvesting system individually. I have drawn the floor plan and sustainability diagrams.

ULI Hines Student Urban Design and Development Competition

Urban Development Project

This project provides socially and economically disadvantaged populations the chance to become fully integrated with the 21st-century economy. Our site invites all classes, colors, and creeds to move forward in a Co-Laboratory setting that provides an opportunity, amenity, and affordability.

The future-oriented Cincinnati Tech Foundry will focus on future trades, such as solar panel installation and smart grid maintenance. The green jobs will replace the traditional blue-collar jobs.

The site will feature mixed-use spaces with

residential, hotel, and office. Solar and hydropower will be used to provide efficient energy.

Queen City Co-Lab features a total buildout of over 3.6 million square feet at a cost of $674 million and only 1000 square feet of existing property will be demolished in total.

We designed the Co-Lab project as a team with two architecture, two city and regional planning, and one business administration student. All the architectural planning, drawings, and renders are made by me and YsaBella Licciardi.

Geology Research Center

In this studio, we aim to write an architectural program that will help the projection of the beautiful Ankara Citadel. In the first site visit, the view of the mural zone was very impressive with its natural parts and the artificial walls together creating a whole. The hill looked like an “Urban Façade” in the city and I saw a huge potential beneath the Façade.

There have been many civilizations that lived in this area and used the interior of the hill. There are numerous tunnels from the Byzantine period which reused in the Seljuk period and two big shelters from

the 1940s, one is at the top and one at the bottom.

I continued my research with the geological structure of the hill. It consists of andesite rock which is a volcanic igneous rock formation that contains different crystals like amethyst. I examined different types to learn their formation.

After the analysis and research, I decided to design a geology research center and benefit from its already existing character. The project consists of geology education facilities and draws attention to the mural terrain’s importance for Ankara.

Parametric Urban Design and Analysis

As part of the Parametric Urben Design & Analysis and Urban Simulation & Modelling courses, we have advanced our knowledge and skills in Rhino, Grasshopper, and coding with C# in Grasshopper to model several Urban settings with parametric tools and run complex simulations and analyses on these numerous models and scenarios.

Vivid Center is a project where I get to experiment with these tools while learning how to use them to model and evaluate the results of the simulations based on changing variables.

This parametric city planning project started with creating urban forms: the street networks, then plots, and lastly, buildings. At each step, I have produced several urban form variants by changing design factors and variables in my algorithms, knowing that they have the longest-lasting effect on the city’s social, economic, and eco performance.

In the second stage, I got to try spatial analysis methods (density, visibility, and accessibility) to identify different (human-centered) qualities of the generated urban forms.

SOUND ISLAND

Music, Culture, and Research Center

The sound island is designed to give people different experiences about sound and music. The island itself hosts different types of musical sculptures that create harmonic sounds by wind and waves. I determined the placement of these musical instruments to show all sides of the island.

Both Bodrum and Greek Islands have classical music festivals and the island can host these events and international orchestras. The design form comes from the idea of representing five periods of classical music. Each slit takes its sectional form

from one of the important music pieces of each period. Thanks to these underground slits, the silhouette is protected. All of the buildings collect rainwater and perform passive design principles.

The program consists of research facilities, museums, performance halls, and accommodation units. The slits have public and private areas according to their proximity to the pier. Between the facilities, there are open areas for outdoor activities. Sound Island is a well-developed musical complex that serves different functions.

SHIFTING PERSPECTIVES

Galveston Bay Teaching Pavilion

We were asked to build the first structure on a waterfront for a NPO dedicated to societal education about the environment and water literacy. The foundation needed an outdoor education pavilion for seventy-five students. They asked that the design be architecturally inspiring and reflect their aspirations of making the bay a better place.

We selected the name Shift because each plane of the project shifts from its accustomed location. In disaster-stricken areas, children get traumatized by water. This pavilion serves as a way for them to shift

into a different mindset. Screens slip away from the deck and don’t engage its edges. As one moves throughout the project, views through the screens shift. Finally, the metal screens themselves shift over time as they rust, and their color will change.

We worked on the design, technical drawing, and construction parts as a team. I created concept drawings, early plans, and sections then focused on the sun studies, shading, and orientation. Lastly, in the construction phase, I worked with concrete foundations, slabs, and the framing of the floor.

The Bay View

Connector Building Rulantica Waterpark

The Connector Building is a planned extention project for the Rulantica Waterpark in Rust. It is a 4-storey building over 5000 m2 featuring a 350 indoor seating restaurant with a large industrial kitchen and service area, more than 1400 m2 resting area with sunbeds, VIP lounges, an indoor playground for kids, and an extensive underground backstage area with changing rooms for the workers, storage, and technical rooms.

It faces the Twist and Splash attraction through openings from multiple levels and terraces.

Europa-Park | Mack Solutions

May 2023 - December 2023, Rust, Germany Supervisor: Tobias Schirmer

The outdoor spaces host additional seats for the restaurant and sunbeds on the terraces for increased resting areas during summer months.

I have developed three design versions for the Connector Building from the beginning of the design phase till the completion of the building permit plans based on German regulations.

I executed preliminary cost calculations and presented different versions to the owners.

The concept design image was developed by Michelle Homburg based on Scandinavian culture.

Europa-Park Croatian Theme Area

The 250 m2 Ice-Cream Shop is located in the new Croatia theme area at Europa Park. It is designed to represent the Mediterranean and Croatian culture through its color, form, and material selections. It hosts a two-story restaurant and garden area for the customers to serve ice cream and waffles, a terrace facing the big new attraction Voltron Roller-coaster, and an industrial kitchen in the main block and, technical areas for the machinery and backstage units such as storage, WC, freezers on the other block. A bridge and a stair connect the two blocks.

October 2022 - January 2024, Rust, Germany Supervisor: Christian Schätzle

I have co-led the project from the beginning of the design phase till the end of rough construction phase. I created several versions of the design for the owner’s approval, filled and submitted the building permit documents following German regulations, and produced the entire plan set and detail drawings for the construction.

I executed cost calculations, communicated with the other project actors to navigate offers and their services, and co-led project meetings. The design renders are crafted by Eva-Maria Graf.

In order to understand how to reduce the energy consumption in buildings, all factors affecting occupant comfort and behavior must be considered. Previous work from EPFL has elucidated the influence of daylight on thermal perception and its resulting potential to reduce cooling loads in a controlled test space in Geneva, Switzerland with three different illumination levels (130 lux, 600 lux, and 1400 lux) and under three different indoor air temperature levels (19°C, 23°C, 27°C).

Occupants perceived the temperature as up to 2°C cooler when exposed to daylight, leading to reduced cooling loads.

This thesis investigates whether daylight use and its effect on thermal comfort (Chinazzo et al., 2019) can help to reduce the total energy consumption of a test room by rearranging the cooling set-point temperature according to the reported 2°C gap, during the warmer half of the year, and if this arrangement would make a bigger impact in a place like Austin with a warmer climate and a higher cooling demand than the original experiment location, Switzerland.

The results show that the impact of daylight use to reduce energy consumption is affected by two main factors: the location and its level of cooling demand and solar characteristic, and the cooling setpoint temperature level arrangement. In other words, if a location has lower cooling demand and mild solar conditions in summer, like Geneva, and the cooling setpoint temperature is arranged to be higher, a bigger impact on energy efficiency due to daylight use can be expected.
