By The Reverend Thomas Kincaid Vice Rector

The Psalmist famously says: “Taste and see that the Lord is good” (Psalm 34:8a). That verse is an invitation for us to remember that our relationship with God involves our whole selves—all our senses and faculties—not just the ones we might use most frequently. What do I mean? For several centuries now, Western Christian and non-Christian thought have both been mostly focused on words and numbers—as opposed to colors, smells, tastes, etc. There are good reasons for this focus and much progress has been made thanks to it (modern medicine, for example). But sometimes this common focus has led Christians to focus their relationship with God on two things: the Scriptures and prayers with lots of words. Again, not bad things, but God cannot be confined by such media. This Lent, we’re taking the stories of Jesus’ last days and bringing them to life in new ways. Journey to the Cross is an experiential art exhibit that draws believers and nonbelievers alike into the powerful story of Jesus' final days. If you remember Stations of the Cross from last Lent, then imagine that same experience stretched out with life size (or larger than life size) art installations inviting you to journey with Jesus in his last hours. A team of Incarnation artists and partners from other churches have been working for two years to develop an exhibit that will draw on all our senses. Open to the parish and the public in the days leading up to Holy Week, Journey to the Cross is an opportunity not to be missed. This opportunity is one you’ll certainly want to take advantage of for yourself and your family (there will be special, age-appropriate guidance for children to help them receive this powerful story in a safe but impactful way), but this experience is also an opportunity to invite folks from other churches and folks from no church at all. Everyone will get something out the beauty and power of this experience. Journey to the Cross is made possible by the gifts given to The Incarnation Foundation in honor of Staff Sargent Joshua Snowden. Josh, an Incarnation parishioner, died on active duty in the summer of 2017. The Journey to the Cross team has been working hard to honor his personal commitment to Jesus Christ, and his habit of inviting and encouraging others towards the same.

ANGELUS INCARNATION.ORG

By The Reverend John Sundara Adult Formation

One of the hidden gems that we have in our diocese, and specifically our parish, is our very own theologian-in-residence, The Rev. Canon Dr. Victor Lee Austin (Ph. D). Not many parishes can boast a theologian-in-residence, let alone one as accomplished as Fr. Austin. He is the author of many books, including less talked about, but highly important, topics like the nature of authority and freedom, and Christian ethics. His most notable book, “Losing Susan: Brain Disease, the Priest's Wife, and the God Who Gives and Takes Away” is a personal story of love and loss where Fr. Austin shares how caring for his wife during her painful struggle with brain cancer and its after effects brought him face-to-face with God and with his faith in unsettling ways. This book was reviewed in Christianity Today, The Gospel Coalition, National Review, and The Living Church. Prior to setting up office here at Incarnation, Fr. Austin served as theologian-in-residence at St. Thomas Church Fifth Avenue. We are blessed to have him. What follows is a brief interview with Fr. Austin, which we hope showcases to you this gem in our midst. WHY AND WHEN DID YOU FEEL A CALLING TO THE PRIESTHOOD?

I had the sense at college that God had snuck up on me. It was, of course, gradual: I always knew the things of God are the most important things in the world. But one day I just knew, not only that they were important, but that they were true all the way down. So I started talking with my priest and others and they confirmed my sense of a priestly call. WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FONDEST MEMORIES FROM SERVING AS A PARISH PRIEST?

I have been in different sorts of parishes, and there are good memories from them all. Let me focus, however, on the church where I was the longest. I was rector of the Church of the Resurrection in Hopewell Junction, N.Y., for 14 years. It’s a little parish in the Hudson Valley. While I was there, my wife’s brain tumor was found. It was amazing to go through that unexpected, medical, bad news with our parish family—and indeed “family” it was. They loved Susan and brought her cards and us food, helped with our children, and most of all prayed. From that time, I have so many memories—some tragic: the young man killed on his motorcycle, some joyful: the child conceived when the couple had given up. Bible studies. Picnics. Our Easter Vigil! We would go outside to the graveyard by the parish in the middle of the service, before the first “alleluia” was said, and stand in silence, waiting. Then we rang the bell and returned inside singing “Christ is risen from the dead.”

WHAT HAVE BEEN SOME OF YOUR STRUGGLES IN YOUR FAITH?

I have some strong convictions about struggles. One is that we must always be honest with God. So don’t pray fake prayers: pray for what you really want. I suppose through the years of caring for Susan this developed in me: the sense that I didn’t need to shape my prayers so that they would be “correct” or “proper”: I just needed to tell God what I really wanted. I might want the wrong thing—but God won’t give me what’s bad, just because I asked for it. Those of you of a certain age will remember the song, “Lord, won’t you buy me a Mercedes Benz?” I think that’s a good prayer: if what you really want is a fancy car, that’s what you should ask God for. Over time, he tends to give us grace and insight so that our wants really do change. We must seek integrity, and do our best to think and act, and trust him, and not cut ourselves off from community (and communion). Almost every struggle I’ve had pertained to something that wasn’t fitting together, some lack of that wholeness or integrity. WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR PASSIONS AND INTERESTS IN YOUR ROLE AS THEOLOGIAN-IN-RESIDENCE? WHAT ARE YOU ENCOURAGED BY HERE AT INCARNATION?

It is a blessing to be theologian-in-residence for Dallas and Incarnation! I am particularly interested in Christian ethics— it’s a way of trying to see how faith and life fit together. I’ve started a book seminar here, “Good Book & Good Talk,” which is a way of letting good books raise that integrity question for us: what does Christian faith look like in this situation? (Anyone can come to any seminar if you’ve read the book for that month.) I am writing a book on friendship that Baker is publishing; we hope to be done with the manuscript this spring, and thus it is likely to be out in 2020. I have never served in a parish as vibrant and large as Incarnation. I am amazed it exists, and give thanks to God often for the Rector and Vice Rector and the hundreds (literally hundreds!) of people who serve and work to make it go. That Incarnation exists at all, that it has clarity about its mission, that it has super-competent leadership, that people pray here, serve the poor, are strengthened in their Christian life, and even moved to engage in various forms of ministry; that the great Anglican tradition of worship is alive here in both traditional and contemporary forms; all this is profoundly encouraging. Fr. Austin has a thriving ministry at Incarnation. Apart from preaching on Sundays and celebrating mass every Friday morning at 8 am, he gives the Fall and Spring Theology lectures which have been generously attended. He also hosts an (almost) monthly seminar called “Good Book & Good Talk” that discusses major literary works.

One of the cornerstones of our collective faith and one of the four mission points of Church of the Incarnation is Service. We keep this mission in our minds as we go out to our surrounding community, striving to make an impact on those around us. This past November, Church of the Incarnation felt privileged to be a part of the Thanksgiving Dinner held at the Roseland Community Center. For those who do not know, Roseland is a historic community a few blocks from our campus that provides public and low-cost housing. For the last few years, Roseland has held what is now an annual Thanksgiving dinner for those living in the community, and Church of the Incarnation has been blessed to have been able to be a part of this awesome event for the second year in a row. We had so many wonderful volunteers from Incarnation give so much of themselves to serve our neighbors across Highway 75 in what was a huge success. Incarnation was not the only organization to participate however. Church of the Incarnation, Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church, St. Paul Methodist, Central Dallas Church, and City Church International, among others, all came together to provide food and activities for the Roseland Community. The turnout was great—more than 125 volunteers served roughly 450 Roseland neighbors! Thanks to our volunteers, we had everything that could be asked for at a Thanksgiving dinner. There was what seemed to be an endless supply of turkey and sides with all of the leftovers being handed out to the neighbors in the community. We had arts and crafts activities for the neighborhood children to entertain them while their parents socialized and built connections with volunteers

from the churches present. We even had professional photographer, Dickie Hill, there taking family portraits to capture the moment. Most powerful of all was being able to pray and worship together as one large community. Neighbors of the community, and volunteers alike, were brought together by God’s power and love. It was easy to tell how large of an impact this had on the community. Neighbors talking, laughing, and even dancing alongside members of our own church was a beautiful sight. It was a humbling experience to be used by God to serve and build community, an opportunity not only impactful for the community but for ourselves as well. Student Ministry at Incarnation saw many of our students making time to serve. It was a privilege to watch future Christian leaders serve food and make crafts with big smiles that spread among those attending. The next morning at Sunday School, many of our students were still talking about the event, swapping stories and laughing about the good memories they had made. It was a great reminder of the duty we have not only to serve, but to lead others to serve along with us. Student Ministry could not be more proud of our students. The Roseland Thanksgiving dinner was a resounding success. Church of the Incarnation is grateful to be able to be a part of something greater than ourselves and will continue to reach out to the communities around us with a servant’s heart. We are already looking forward to next year and we hope you can be there to see God move in the community for yourself. To get involved in next year's Thanksgiving dinner, contact Anne Mackintosh at amackintosh@incarnation.org. Have a student interested in serving? Contact Donna at dstack@incarnation.org.

TO FORGIVENESS By Jennifer LeBlanc Chief Operating Officer

The Vietnam War gave rise to many tragedies, some more familiar than others. A photograph of a young girl running naked down a road, her skin on fire with napalm, changed the way the world looked at war. The girl in that photograph is Kim Phuc. As you might imagine, Kim is a sought after speaker around the world, and we have a unique opportunity to have her in Dallas at Incarnation. Kim’s journey to forgiveness can shed light in the dark corners of our fears, regrets, and often time sadness in this broken world. Her triumph helps put our worries and suffering into perspective and offers a sense of hope and direction for finding the good in the midst of hardships. By the power of the Holy Spirit, she has dedicated her life to creating peace, helping children, and speaking about the transformation forgiveness can bring those who are suffering. In the Bible, the Greek word Aphiemi, translated “forgive,” literally means “to set free.” Jesus taught his followers to pray: “Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.”

KIM PHUC IS COMMONLY REFERENCED AS “THE NAPALM GIRL” AS SHE WAS THE NINE-YEAR-OLD CHILD IN THE PULITZER PRIZE-WINNING PHOTOGRAPH DURING THE VIETNAM WAR ON JUNE 8, 1972. SHE IS NOW A PUBLIC SPEAKER WHO OFFERS A GRIPPING STORY OF THE ROAD TO RECONCILIATION AND FORGIVENESS THROUGH FAITH IN CHRIST.

Who hasn't been hurt by the actions or words of another? Perhaps a parent constantly criticized you growing up, a colleague sabotaged a project, or your spouse had an affair. Or maybe you've had a traumatic experience, such as being physically or emotionally abused. These wounds can leave you with lasting feelings of anger and bitterness— even vengeance. We believe it is important to examine the challenges, setbacks, and triumphs of navigating our own journey through reconciliation, overcoming hate, and wrestling with forgiveness in our own lives. As a parish, we will be taking a Journey to a Holy Lent, reflectively and prayerfully examining Christ’s journey to the cross for us and the hope and healing we can only find there through him. This is an opportunity for you to invite friends and neighbors to learn how forgiveness can lead you down the path of physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. This event is underwritten by The Incarnation Foundaion.

By Sara Snowden Mission & Outreach Project Manager

Whose lives could be different because of what we do? God plays a long game. He is strategic in the ways he positions us to be a witness on his behalf. Each year, the families served through Angel Tree are identified by our relational ministries that continue to help us build strong bridges to the community so we can minister to the total person. This year, like in years past, we learned of several stories that reassure us that Church of the Incarnation is answering God’s call to serve others.

ANGELS IN THE ACADEMY

Just before Thanksgiving during the period when Incarnation families adopt Angel Tree families, Marion Donat, a mom from Incarnation Academy and member of the church, stopped by the Outreach office to select a family for her friend group of parents with young children. When she learned that 40 more kids and families still needed adopting, she had the idea to offer the opportunity to adopt at Incarnation Academy’s Thanksgiving lunch. What a way to show Academy families Incarnation’s spirit for giving and our desire to help our community! Marion’s suggestion was a successful one—all remaining families were adopted, and more young families attended the gift drop-off night than in years past.

ANGELS IN THE PARISH

After the Angel Tree gift drop-off night this year, God brought nine more families to Mission & Outreach in need of assistance this holiday season. Four came from North Dallas High School. Mentors from Ladies of Leadership and Man Up came together to support these students further and help create joy for their siblings during the Christmas season. The phone calls kept coming in. Alternating each message about a family in need was a message from an Incarnation family wondering if it was too late to adopt an “angel.” Through ministries like Angel Tree, we continue to enhance our engagement to deal with any need that hinders our neighbors from experiencing Christ’s love and living the abundant life intended by God.

OTHER ANGEL TREE STATISTICS • 500+ individuals experienced Christ’s love at Christmas through the Mission & Outreach Department • 161 families adopted • 150 children in protective services adopted • 40+ volunteers sorted presents, packed food, and helped families load their cars • 40 stockings prepared for children who recently entered Child Protective Services • 22 additional families from Central Dallas Church each received four boxe of food

OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOU TO SERVE YEAR-ROUND • Serve meals once a month at Aids Services of Dallas or Austin Street Center • Share your heart for Christ with teenagers at weekly Young Life meetings • Serve as a tutor or mentor students in neighborhood schools • Help refugees learn English and navigate life in Dallas • Volunteer for Day of Service • Sign up for the Honduras, Belize, or Nepal mission trips • Assist the working poor through the Granger Neighborhood Ministry
