Note from Program/Events Director, Melissa Stewart We are excited to present the Spring 2015 Activity Guide!

Please take some time to look at the activities and mark your calendar for the ones you would like to participate in. While we offer fun programs like Ceramics and Rock Wall, we also offer daily Tutoring & Homework Help and programs such as The Awesome Pretzel Cart & Work Readiness programs. We do our best to cover a wide range of interests and keep the costs low so everyone can participate. This includes our membership.

We require that the minimum of $1.00 is paid for the annual membership, but encourage those who can afford more to consider paying more. Remember to save the date for our Open House on June 6th!

Melissa 284-2467 x17 Membership Information:  Chop’s membership is open to Santa Rosa youth in 7th-12th grades.  You must become a Chop’s Teen Club member to participate in Chop’s activities (except for dances and special events).  To become a member, complete the Member Form with a parent or guardian signature, show a valid student ID and pay $1.00 (or more if you can afford it!)  You will receive a Chop’s Member Card that you must bring with you to get into Chop’s for drop-in and planned activities.

Art Studio Chop’s Art Studio exposes teen members to a wide range of creative activities and opportunities. Through open studio time, workshops and classes, teens experience art disciplines such as wheel thrown and hand built ceramics, sewing and embroidery, painting, drawing and construction. The Art Studio staff are always available for help with projects. We are dedicated to promoting a vast variety of affordable activities that foster creativity in a fun artistic atmosphere!

Activity Name: Fine Art, Drawing & Painting Description: Learn painting techniques as you explore how to plan and paint an acrylic, watercolor or mixed media piece. Learn to mix colors and which brush works best for each effect. You'll get to know the process, materials and elements of fine art. You will also learn to draw, shade, the concepts of perspective drawing, how to create intricate Zentangles with pencils and markers and so much more.

Activity Name: Ceramics Description: Join our ceramics teacher on Wednesdays and learn basic to intermediate clay techniques in wheel throwing, hand building, and glazing! We have the clay, tools, two wheels, a kiln to fire the clay, and glazes to help you create amazing pieces. Challenge your creativity as you design and complete beautiful pottery pieces.

We have the hottest teen night club in town called Club 509! It includes a spacious dance floor with club lighting for a party-like atmosphere, and an incredible sound system.

Enjoy movies, dances, open-mic nights and so much more.

The cafĂŠ is open for members to purchase drinks, meals and tasty treats during drop-in hours and events.

Activity Name: Social Dance Description: Open to 7th-12th graders. Join Nordquist Junior Dance instructors on the second Saturday of each month for a 30 minute social dance lesson. Culinary Chop’s Teaching Kitchen and Espresso Bar boasts an impressive array of equipment and tools necessary for culinary and barista instruction. Culinary students become familiar in the kitchen, can learn to operate an espresso machine, learn basic meal and drink preparation, and how to cook and serve as part of our catering crew. Students can also learn employable skills.

Activity Name: Baking from the heart Description: Satisfy your sweet tooth in the Chop's kitchen during Valentine's month. Join our Culinary Coordinator Heidi and learn how to use chocolate and other scrumptious ingredients in many different ways to create baked chocolate desserts as well as other sweet specialty items. Sports & Fitness Chop’s houses a state-of-the-art ¾ size gym that includes a 35 foot rock wall with five different levels of difficulty.

Activities include basketball, volleyball, dodge ball, badminton, indoor soccer, group games, and more. Join us for some drop-in action or sign up for one of the following activities.

Activity Name: Rock Wall Description: Climb our 35 foot state-of-the-art rock wall every Monday Thursday! Our certified belayer Gabe will guide you up challenging routes. Become a member of the Chop's Rock Climbing Team, and rack up points for each challenge you take on. If you're not ready to scramble up the wall, we have a variety of games that will test your skills and keep you close to the ground.

We offer several programs for workforce readiness, leadership and volunteer opportunities. Join a community service club, become active in our member meetings or take a workshop to gain employable skills. You can also fulfill requirements for school volunteer hours at Chop’s.

Activity Name: Barista Training Description: Join our Culinary Coordinator Heidi for a series of 2-hour workshops where you'll learn employable skills for a coffee shop.

Workshops will include how to get a barista job, excellent customer service skills, steaming, frothing and preparing hot/cold drinks. Each participant will receive a training manual, recipe guide and certificate of completion after passing the "Barista Basics" test.

Activity Name: Work Readiness Program Description: Join us for a 10 week program designed to prepare teens to get and keep a job! We will be using Chop's Awesome Pretzel Cart to teach business skills such as marketing, profit margins, inventory, customer service, cash handling, food safety and sanitation. You will earn a basic food handlers certificate and gain valuable work experience taking the pretzel cart out to the West End Farmers Market. Learn the financial aspects of earning a paycheck with a visit from Redwood Credit Union staff. Learn how to present yourself on paper and create a cover letter and a resume. Learn what to say and not to say in an interview, fine tune your new interviewing skills and then local employers will host mock interviews for participants to practice their interviewing skills, and may lead to a job. The Work Readiness Program focuses on 15 competencies that Sonoma County Employers identified as being needed for success on the job. Successful participants will walk away with a professional portfolio and the Sonoma County Office of Education's Work Ready Certificate and earn a $200 stipend!

Activity Name: Basic Leadership Development Lab Description: Specifically designed for 7th-10th grade students.

Establish a firm foundation of leadership knowledge and skills, so you can help ANY group successfully accomplish a task. Come experiment in this fun, active and interactive laboratory setting. Discover your natural leadership style and learn how to work well with people who have different styles. Assess your current leadership skills and develop others to round out your capacity to lead. Activity Name: Advanced Leadership Development Lab Description: Conducted in the same fun, active and interactive style, the Advanced Lab builds on the foundation of knowledge and skills presented in the Basic Lab. It will help you refine and deepen your leadership capacity, and includes special sections on creative problem solving, effective communication, feedback and coaching, presentation and public speaking, and working effectively with adults. These two Labs will help you step effectively into leadership roles on the Youth Empowerment Council, on the Members’ Council at Chop’s, or on other advisory boards, groups or clubs in your school and community.

Youth Empowerment Council The Youth Empowerment Council (YEC) is a partnership between Tomorrow's Leaders Today (TLT) and Chop's Teen Club (Chop's) to create a forum for youth voices in our community and to utilize their leadership skills to enhance our community. The YEC strives to be a diverse representation of youth in Sonoma County and is open to students in grades 10-12. The YEC involves themselves with local government Initiatives and hold seats on various task force groups. They are trained in meeting rules and regulations, develop presentations skills, and implement various projects to empower other youth in the community. One staff person from TLT and one staff person from Chop's are appointed to work in partnership as the Advisors to the YEC.
