Since its inception, Inasmuch Foundation has been guided by a deep commitment to Edith Kinney Gaylord’s original vision to benefit people and communities by inspiring change and advocating for Oklahoma’s most vulnerable citizens. Encouraged by the Foundation’s impact on the community over the past 40 years, we are inspired to continue her legacy of working together to create a better Oklahoma. Thanks to careful investing and dedication of the board, committees and staff, the endowment has grown to a current value of more than $550 million and achieved a milestone in spring 2023 when the total grant funding surpassed the original $350 million. This inflection point is a cause for reflection and celebration, as we think about some of the Foundation’s most impactful grants in Central Oklahoma:
n In the early 2000s, Inasmuch Foundation partnered to bring Educare, a national learning network, to Oklahoma City, leading the capital campaign to build a state-of-theart facility in south OKC. In 2009, Educare Oklahoma City, now run by Sunbeam Family Services, serves 728 children across 16 different sites. An Early Head Start provider in Oklahoma City, Sunbeam is now a leader in early childhood education across the state. Sunbeam’s early education centers, partner sites, and Home Visitation Programs raise the quality of early care and education in our community while preparing babies and toddlers from birth to age 4 to enter kindergarten with the skills necessary to be ready for school. Sunbeam helps over 4,000 Oklahoma children and families learn, grow and thrive each year through early childcare and education. Sunbeam also provided specialized wraparound support for entire family systems, including mental health services, and programming for foster families and grandparents raising their grandchildren.
n Inasmuch Foundation led Lyric Theatre’s capital campaign with a $1,500,000 grant for the Plaza Theatre renovation in 2005. The theater had been empty since 1979 and along with the surrounding neighborhood was in disrepair. Inasmuch Foundation’s grant was one of the catalysts leading to a district currently known as a hub for arts, creativity, food and entertainment. With more than 45 thriving businesses and $17 million in private investment, the Plaza District sets the example of the importance the arts play in building and rebuilding thriving neighborhoods.
n In 2010, Inasmuch Foundation and the United Way of Central Oklahoma convened a group of 25 community leaders to address the rate at which Oklahoma incarcerates women and the trauma that occurs within a family when a mother goes to prison. This group identified an approach to remove systemic barriers and provide a path toward recovery for mothers battling a cycle of trauma, poverty and incarceration. Launched in 2011, ReMerge has served nearly 200 mothers who have graduated from the four-phase program and been reunited with their children rather than going to prison. Not only has ReMerge served families, it has saved the State of Oklahoma more than $42 million.
Letter fromn Inasmuch Foundation’s close partnership with the Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Oklahoma has been key to the college’s rise to the No. 2 overall college journalism program in the United States as ranked by the Broadcast Education Association in 2022. From capital grants for the state-of-the-art facility, to the Ralph Sewell Scholarship and Gaylord in D.C. program, the Foundation’s support for OU journalism has provided unique opportunities for students and faculty. Grants to Gaylord College continue to pay dividends as graduates fill vital roles as reporters, editors, producers and founders at media organizations across the state, and nation.
Rooted in Edith’s remarkable foresight, Inasmuch Foundation has the unique ability to respond in real time to Oklahoma City’s most critical needs. In the summer of 2022, the Foundation hosted listening sessions to gain a deeper understanding of the city’s current issues, hearing directly from key stakeholders. It was clear that vulnerable communities in Oklahoma continue to face barriers, disparities and complex challenges that are not easily solved. Through collaboration, community-driven change and public/private partnerships, Inasmuch Foundation is poised to collaborate with others in the community to tackle some of Central Oklahoma’s most complex issues.
It is time for innovative solutions, unique partnerships and targeted focus. This work cannot be done alone, and Inasmuch Foundation looks forward to expanding its network to inspire change and shape a brighter future.
Celebrating 40 Years of 03
n the late 1960s, Edith Kinney Gaylord returned to Oklahoma City after living and working as a journalist in New York and Washington, D.C. Her father, E.K. Gaylord, introduced her to William J. (Bill) Ross over lunch and the two became confidants from the moment they met.
In the early ’80s, Edith and Bill began to meet weekly as Edith articulated her desire to start two foundations, Inasmuch Foundation and Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation. A careful wordsmith, Edith took great pride in selecting the name “Inasmuch Foundation” from a scripture that embodied the essence of the foundation she wanted to create. Matthew 25:40: “Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.” Similarly, Edith’s passion for trustworthy news came through in the name Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation.
Edith dreamed of an organization that would do good, inspire change and enhance the quality of life of Oklahoma’s most vulnerable citizens. With an original investment of $1 million, Edith’s vision became reality and both foundations were established with David Hogan, Jamie McWilliams (chair), and Bill Ross as the founding trustees. The original advisory committee comprised of Mary Richard, Jeanne Hoffman Smith, and Barbara Yalich was tasked with early grantmaking and studying best practices of private foundations across Oklahoma, Colorado and the nation.
By the fall of 1999, Bill and Edith started including Bob Ross in their weekly meetings. During one of these routine meetings, Edith expressed her desire for Bob to lead her foundations one day.
On January 28, 2001, Edith passed away at the age of 84, leaving her wealth, nearly $350 million, to the foundations, significantly expanding their annual grantmaking capacity. In 2002, Bill Ross hired the first Inasmuch Foundation employee, Nancy Hodgkinson, and operated the Foundation out of the office of Rainey, Ross, Rice, & Binns law firm on the seventh floor of the First National Center. Bob and Sarah Roberts joined Nancy as full-time staff in 2003, and Richard Davis joined in 2004.
In 2005, with Bill remaining chairman of the board, Bob was named president and CEO. Together, Bill, Bob, and David Hogan, the Foundation’s Investment Committee, worked to grow the endowment to more than $500 million and “give away Edith’s money.” Edith envisioned her foundations living into perpetuity and supporting the ever-changing needs of Central Oklahoma and Colorado Springs. To that end, Edith made sure the board and staff were given the leeway to ebb and flow the Foundation’s priorities with the needs of the community. Her leeway also empowered the board in spring 2020 to merge Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation into Inasmuch Foundation. After operating as one organization internally for close to 20 years, the two external brands were consolidated into one: Inasmuch Foundation. The Foundation’s priority going forward will be to continue the momentum Edith, Bill and the advisers laid out in 1982, which has been carefully carried out for the past 40 years.
Inasmuch Foundation was established because Edith dreamed of an organization that would do good, inspire change and enhance the quality of life of Oklahoma’s vulnerable citizens.

Philanthropy
Inasmuch Foundation became fully funded on December 31, 2002, with a combined fair market value of $342 million. Over the following two decades, the endowment endured various peaks and valleys. As a result of the Global Financial Crisis that began in 2007, the endowment fell to an all-time low of $265 million in 2009. Fortunately, the endowment has since rebounded and in December 2021 hit its high of $605 million. As of December 31, 2022, its consolidated fair market value (FMV) was $527 million.
Inasmuch Foundation reached an inflection point during the spring 2023 grant cycle and has now granted more than $346,000,000 since its inception, surpassing Edith’s original contribution to the foundations. Through Edith’s generosity, more than $265,000,000 of these grants has been given in the state of Oklahoma.
From 1982 until Edith’s passing in January 2001, Inasmuch Foundation and Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation made grants to more than 250 organizations, including nearly 50 that continue to be partners of the merged Foundation today.
The foundations entered a new chapter in 2004 when required distribution rose dramatically in response to Edith’s trust contributing $342,000,000 to Inasmuch Foundation’s endowment. Annual grantmaking totals increased to $10,000,000 and have gradually grown in tandem with the endowment to $26,000,000 in the current fiscal year.
Driven by large capital grants to the University of Oklahoma and Colorado College, as well as significant investment in early childhood education, the Foundation has contributed the most grant funding to the Education focus area. In recent years, Human Services has received more grant dollars primarily through operating support. Journalism and Community grantmaking have consistently represented about 20% of the Foundation’s contributions.
Inasmuch Foundation’s Board of Directors approved the organization’s first strategic plan in 2020. The plan, which was developed in response to stakeholder feedback in 2019, provided greater focus, and a roadmap to achieving strategic goals. It also led to the creation of a singular Inasmuch Foundation brand as Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation was incorporated under the Inasmuch umbrella. While the global COVID-19 pandemic altered some of the original objectives, nearly all the internal and external goals in the original plan have been met and many exceeded.
Based on the feedback from the external stakeholders, the three most significant shifts from the 2019 listening sessions are:
n In 2022, the Foundation was acknowledged as a leader in solutions for community issues. In 2019, a recognized strength was the ability to convene.
n In 2022, across all participant groups, contributors expressed a desire for more fair and impartial journalism. In 2019, journalism was not brought up in a significant way.
n In 2022, there was a growing awareness of increased public visibility and knowledge of the Foundation due to an intentional focus on marketing, communication and social media. In 2019, Inasmuch Foundation’s public visibility was smaller.
Since that time, the Foundation’s board transitions, endowment growth, and shifting external environment have necessitated the creation of a new strategic plan. Through internal reviews, community listening sessions and interviews, the Foundation gathered valuable feedback in 2022 from more than 100 individuals. This input revealed significant changes from three years prior. Community-Identified Most Pressing Issues in Oklahoma
n As part of the listening sessions, the community identified the top five most pressing issues.
n Homelessness, Mental Health & Substance Abuse and Pre-K 12 Education were identified in the top five in 2019 and 2022.
n While Justice Reform and Poverty are still significant issues facing Oklahoma City, Workforce Development and Oklahoma Journalism were identified as the more pressing issues in 2022.
n Staff is described as accessible, visible, responsive and community-focused.
n The Foundation is nimble and quick to react to community needs.
n Partnerships between nonprofits and broader community-based coalitions are promoted and facilitated by Inasmuch Foundation.
n Visibility and communication as the public profile of the Foundation has expanded due to increased marketing, and an active social media presence.
n Narrow the funding focus was the most frequently mentioned area of improvement. It was acknowledged the Foundation has already progressed in this area and is implementing stabilization and hiatus plans.
n Increased transparency regarding how the Foundation sets goals, decides funding priorities and measures progress.
n Outcomes and metrics should be more prevalent in the Foundation’s strategy.
Celebrating 40 Years of
roviding access to health and human services, specifically for women and children, was primary to Edith’s philanthropy and the earliest days of Inasmuch Foundation’s grantmaking. Mental Health Association of Oklahoma, Catholic Charities and Youth Services of Oklahoma County (now known as Pivot) were a few of the Foundation’s earliest grantees dating back to the 1980s and ’90s, and steadfast partnerships with them remain today.
In the 2000s and 2010s, the Foundation’s initiatives increasingly addressed basic and emergency aid, homelessness and justice reform. Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma, Variety Care, Homeless Alliance and ReMerge represent a few of the Foundation’s largest grant recipients, each receiving more than $4 million in funding over the past ten years to expand their services.

The 2022 listening sessions identified homelessness and mental health as pressing issues facing Oklahoma City. Inasmuch Foundation believes it is positioned to address these challenges head-on. The Foundation engaged with Clutch Consulting to study and improve service delivery for the unhoused. Clutch will work with the local Continuum of Care Board, which is made up of business and philanthropic leaders, advocates, government officials and citizens with lived experience, to set measurable goals for the community and attract additional federal investments. Inasmuch Foundation stands ready to provide resources aligned with those goals and to significantly impact chronic homelessness in OKC through support of permanent supportive housing and wraparound case management. The Foundation’s partnerships with the City of Oklahoma City, government entities, funders and local nonprofit providers are invaluable as the Foundation seeks to create lasting systems of change and increase data collection, efficiencies and outcomes.
Investments in additional human services such as diversion from the justice system, abuse prevention, mental health services, and women and family services will also remain components of the Foundation’s grantmaking.
In the past 40 years, Inasmuch Foundation has worked to uphold Edith’s dedication to education, funding more than 800 grants ranging from early childhood education, higher education, traditional public-school districts and public charter schools. In total, Inasmuch Foundation has given more than $100 million in support of educational initiatives.
The most significant focus of the Foundation’s education grantmaking has been early childhood education. This spans from Edith and the Foundation’s support of Rainbow Fleet in the 1980s, through more than $5.5 million in grantmaking in the past five years to organizations such as Oklahoma Partnership for School Readiness, Sunbeam Family Services, Smart Start Central Oklahoma, and renewed support for Rainbow Fleet.
Oklahoma City stakeholders identified education as a key issue in the community during Inasmuch Foundation’s 2019 and 2022 listening sessions. As the Foundation moves forward with the new strategic plan and pivots to meet the changing needs of the Oklahoma City community, its education grantmaking will evolve to focus less on traditional systems and more on parental choice, quality seats, innovation, transformation and successful initiatives.
uch of Inasmuch Foundation’s early grantmaking in the community focus area supported Edith’s deep desire to champion arts and culture, including arts education, museums, live performances, historic preservation and environmental causes. Edith believed visual and performing arts are woven into the fabric of society and are critical in shaping the minds of future generations. Over the years, community grantmaking has evolved to include gifts that promote recreation, wellness, civic engagement and tourism. Creating green spaces, promoting active lifestyles and increasing outdoor exploration strengthen the local quality of life by connecting people and communities to one another.
In recent years, entrepreneurship and economic development grantmaking expanded to support social innovation, business accelerators and incubators. Inasmuch Foundation will continue to support local entrepreneurs through access to resources and technical assistance such as business planning and capacity-building. Women and minority entrepreneurs have historically lacked access to these resources, and the Foundation’s efforts will advocate for inclusive economic growth in Oklahoma City. The Foundation will also continue to support Oklahoma City’s vibrant arts and cultural organizations as they strengthen the community socially, educationally and economically. Through creativity, empathy and expression, human beings are inspired and communities are transformed.

For 38 years, Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation provided funding across the United States for journalism. Partnerships with the Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication, Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, Oklahoma Newspaper Foundation and the Fund for Investigative Journalism each began during Edith’s lifetime and continue to this day. Beginning in 2008, the foundation began a focus on nonprofit investigative reporting, and has been instrumental in the expansion of nonprofit news across the county. In 2020, as part of the previous strategic plan, all journalism grantmaking transitioned from Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation to Inasmuch Foundation, a change that has led to significant internal efficiencies, and less confusion among grantees.

The 2022 listening sessions made clear that Inasmuch Foundation is widely recognized as a local leader in journalism thanks to the merger with Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation and the growth of the Oklahoma Media Center (OMC). OMC launched in partnership with Local Media Association in May of 2020 during the height of the pandemic, and the organization has grown to include more than 25 Oklahoma journalism collaborators. OMC has provided more than $150,000 in stipends to its members for collaborative and innovative projects, as well as monthly training opportunities. Moving forward, Inasmuch Foundation will continue to make OMC one of its key local initiatives in order to support the plethora of organizations that make up the journalism sector in Oklahoma.
Nationally, supporting nonprofit investigative reporting will continue to be the Foundation’s primary focus. The Foundation will provide $50,000 general operating grants to Institute for Nonprofit Journalism members with a preference for midsized organizations reporting at their state and local level. Special Opportunity grants will also be available for organizations across the country prioritizing statewide collaborative journalism.
Inasmuch Foundation founder Edith Kinney Gaylord had a deep connection to Colorado Springs, as she and her father attended Colorado College. Also, for many years the family’s company, The Oklahoma Publishing Company (OPUBCO), owned The Broadmoor, a resort in the city. Over the past 40 years, the Foundation has furthered Edith’s legacy in Colorado Springs through more than $25 million in grantmaking, including more than $18 million to Colorado College. Funding has supported a wide range of causes across the Pikes Peak region; partnerships with Catholic Charities of Central Colorado and Cheyenne Mountain Zoo began during Edith’s lifetime and continue today.
