ON THE QUILL & GARTER: A FANTASY FUSION LIVE WORK RESIDENCY

As a partner project, this live-work residency design project took place over the course 3 months with a more intensive design work happening during a 1 month period. There were many many iterations over the span of the project, this final iteration is the one that my partner Jade Her and I have decided on. The work was split 50-50 between us, with all technical drawings and photoshopped 3D model renderings.

Concept: The Thinkers, embodied by a Burlesque Dancer and a Fantasy Romance Author, present unique forms of escapism, one visual and the other literary. At the heart of their collaboration is the dual concept of escapism and synergy, utilizing formal approaches that embrace otherworldliness and the convergence of spaces. This approach simultaneously promotes individualization and a unified perspective.

Central to their endeavor is the shared challenge of societal expectations imposed on women. The female-only residency they envision becomes a haven for the Burlesque Dancer, offering an escape from objectification, while enabling satirical commentary on real-world issues. Simultaneously, it provides the Fantasy Romance Author a reprieve from societal standards, immersing them in a romanticized realm where worldly troubles are distant.

The residency’s significance lies in affording the female gaze a unique platform, introducing an alternative perspective to the prevailing narrative. Its purpose extends beyond mere escapism, offering refuge from the mundane and replacing it with more idealistic worldviews. Additionally, it serves as a nexus for exposure to diverse female-dominated professions, fostering collaboration and mutual inspiration.

Celebrating femininity, the residency creates a space where female artists can thrive, unburdened by societal expectations, and come together in their pursuit of artistic escapism and empowerment. As an attempt to transition from the mundane to an idealistic worldview, the residency serves as a realm where fantasy intersects with a sanctum space, providing a modulated and ethereal experience.

North East Elevation - 1/8” = 1’-0” Burlesque Dancer: A live-work space tailored for a burlesque dancer seamlessly integrates with their unique lifestyle. Privacy takes precedence, with dedicated areas for dressing and rehearsing, featuring expansive closets and well-lit, mirror-lined spaces. Soundproofing ensures uninterrupted practice and performances. The space is furnished with versatility in mind, accommodating impromptu gatherings and creative expression through seductive decor and room dividers. Safety features and discreet entries prioritize the dancer’s comfort, while the easily transformable layout caters to both personal life and the art of burlesque. It becomes a sensual sanctuary that strikes a harmonious balance between flamboyance and functionality, fostering inspiration and reflecting the vibrant personality of the performer.

North West Elevation - 1/8” = 1’-0” Fantasy Romance Author: A fantasy romance author is in search of a live-work sanctuary that nurtures creativity. Paramount is the need for seclusion to facilitate uninterrupted writing, complemented by an inspiring vista or serene atmosphere. The ideal space features a snug reading nook for immersive research and relaxation, thoughtfully designed bookshelves for their collection, and a dedicated area for a writing desk. Sufficient storage ensures meticulous organization of notes, drafts, and manuscripts. Incorporating mood-enhancing lighting and decor becomes imperative to fuel imagination. The surroundings, bathed in tranquility, become the backdrop for undisturbed focus. Integrated technology caters to digital research and writing tools. In essence, the fantasy romance author’s envisioned space seamlessly intertwines comfort and inspiration, ensuring the enchantment of their stories effortlessly flows from pen to paper.

It pays homage to the industrial heritage of the region, reminding visitors of the laborers who toiled in the steel mills. The use of glass walls introduces transparency and a sense of openness. It signifies the museum’s commitment to shedding light on the history of labor movements, making it accessible and visible to all.
