Our proposed visitor center for Great Falls, Maryland, seeks to strike a delicate balance between architecture and nature. By drawing inspiration from the existing center, utilizing contextual materials, and integrating seamlessly with the topography, the design aims to create a space that not only respects its surroundings but also becomes an integral part of the visitor’s experience, inviting them to connect with the beauty and history of Great Falls.

GENSLER | GARRETT VAN LEEUWEN | SUMMER 202 3
In response to the seismic shift in work dynamics catalyzed by the COVID-19 pandemic, a team of five interns at Gensler embarked on a transformative project to revitalize the Civic Center in San Diego. Faced with the challenge of repurposing vacant office spaces, our team approached the project with a commitment to historic preservation tactics and adaptive reuse, envisioning a dynamic mixed-use housing concept that would breathe new life into this civic hub.
Our focus is clear: to address the pressing issue of homelessness by integrating affordable housing seamlessly above the existing City Office Building (COB). This innovative design not only maximizes existing urban spaces but also establishes a beacon of hope, envisioning a city where everyone has a place to call home.
