February issue of In and Around Iver And I’m pleased to say, the final month of Winter before we start heading into the lighter, brighter months of Spring. Whilst it’s not unusual for people to be sitting like me, at their desk at seven in the morning, if it wasn’t for the sound of cars outside whisking people off to work, I could quite easily be fooled into thinking I’d somehow misread my clock and was in fact doing the night shift. There’s something really quite unnatural about working during the hours of darkness.

I’ve also just received my last eyebrow raising gas and electric bills for the quarter and much as it makes me grimace having to pay them, there’s a sense of relief knowing that the next couple will be a whole lot less. Yes, it’s fair to say, I’m definitely no fan of Winter and whilst I try to embrace the joy of roaring log fires and cosy nights in, the reality is I’d rather be throwing logs in the chiminea and enjoying a bbq in the garden, knowing that the central heating isn’t costing me a small lottery win and when I wake up in the morning, I’ll actually be able to see something out of the windows.

Rehoming Animals: Relentless, But Rewarding Here at RSPCA Hillingdon, as with all RSPCA Branches, we are acutely aware of the importance of finding the right owner for each and every animal we rehome. When an animal is left in our care, for whatever reason, we take on responsibility for that animal’s future life and comfort: it is a truly huge responsibility.

So, how does the process work, and what journey does the animal go on once he or she comes to us? Each animal will receive an immediate veterinary consultation, and will then be found accommodation and will receive hands-on care from our trained and dedicated animal welfare staff. Then there’s flea and worming treatments, and microchipping if the animal hasn’t already been microchipped. There are a series of assessments and discussions about rehoming, and then we will need to sort out photographs and a fair and accurate write-up so that we can ‘advertise’ the animal on our website.

Interested parties must fill in an Adoption Application Form, and we then go through the forms to check that everything is in order. If the details supplied suggest a good match with a particular animal we’ll make a phone call and arrange an initial interview, so that we can find out more about what you’re looking for, and what type of pet would suit your household. Then follows a period of viewing, and time for bonding. If you already have a dog, you may need to bring your dog along to meet his or her potential playmate. All being well, we will arrange a home visit, where one of our volunteers will travel to your home to make sure it’s a safe and appropriate environment for the pet you are looking to adopt. All animals adopted from our branch must have been sterilised prior to rehoming, so that may need to be arranged.

The final rehoming process with all the paperwork takes around an hour, including advice about diet and information about pet insurance; new owners receive an adoption pack, and of course we record everything diligently. We’ll then make a follow up call after the adoption to check that the new family member has settled in, and to answer any questions.

This all takes a huge amount of work from our 14

team. In December 2016 we rehomed an astonishing 51 animals – a record month. We are always keen to hear from anyone who is able to volunteer some time to help – if you have a few spare hours each week and are able to commit, you could help us a great deal by co-ordinating home visits or helping with administrative work, for example. HAPPY EVER AFTER Autumn the white kitten was found in October all alone, and looking very sorry for herself. A kind member of the public alerted us, and after assessing the situation we brought her into our cattery, where an initial veterinary examination revealed that she was deaf – an issue that is not uncommon among white cats. Unable to hear anything, and having been abandoned, it is unlikely that she would have survived if she had not been rescued.

After a few weeks of TLC in our cattery, Autumn found her forever home over the Christmas period.

We wish her every success and happiness in her new home.

LOOKING FOR A HOME We have several gorgeous felines in the cattery at the moment, like Moggy, pictured. Beautiful tortoiseshell Moggy is a kind and laid-back lady, whose favourite pastime is cuddling up in her comfy bed whilst watching the world go by. She is around 8 years old and would prefer to be the only cat in the household. Moggy has come to us through no fault of her own and would really love to find her forever home soon, so that she can get all the love and fuss she deserves. Could you open up your home to Moggy?

Heathrow The Department of Transport have just announced that two public consultation exercises on Heathrow’s Runway expansion are due to mounted in the early part of this year. Keep an eye out for dates and locations as and when they are published.

We are also aware that Heathrow have started sending out speculative letters to local landowners enquiring about their plots. No doubt this is for Heathrow to consider them as locations for the off-airport businesses that will need to be relocated as a result of the runway expansion.

Chequers Bridge Closure This continues to run and run. By the time you are reading this, the milestone date of February 2nd will have passed when we are expecting Slough to make a decision on whether to re-open the road or maintain its closure. Papers we have read indicate that Transport for Slough are recommending that the road should continue to be closed to give them leverage in negotiating funds from the HEX project. We still have no idea on what Bucks CC are thinking or doing!

CEMEX Gravel Extraction Project On January 13, a small party of locals and councillors visited the CEMEX quarry site in Datchet to gain better understanding of how such an operation is carried on. Some photos and videos were taken and these appear on the Association website on the CEMEX page.

We still do not know a date for Bucks CC to hold a hearing on the application.

Neighbourhood and Local Plans Slough BC have now issued their housing expansion plan and part of this is looking to place residential housing in Richings Park in the green belt fields to the north of North Park.

Parking at the Shops Enough residents in Wellesley Avenue have signed in support of a residents’ parking zone in that road – 80% or more. The documentation will be presented to Buckinghamshire County Council (BCC) through The Parish Council.

Xmas Party This was well attended during the early afternoon with lots of Mums bringing along their children to see Santa. We were very pleased with this result and will certainly consider another one this year.

Newsletter To supplement our website for those who do not have access to or decline to use the internet we are planning to create a paper newsletter that can be picked up at the shops.

There is still a need for Neighbourhood Watch South Bucks District Council and Chiltern District Council are actively promoting new and revitalised Neighbourhood Watch Schemes, especially in areas which have experienced incidents of recent burglary. Letters inviting residents to start a new scheme are distributed to homes in these roads.

Neighbourhood Watch is one of the biggest and most successful crime prevention initiatives.

Behind it lies a simple idea: Getting together with your neighbours to take action can cut local crime.

Everyone knows that the police are there to fight crime, but they need your help to do an effective job.

Neighbourhood Watch is all about an active partnership with the police.

Neighbourhood Watch schemes can: cut crime and the opportunities for crime help and reassure those who live in the area, especially those who are vulnerable encourage neighbourliness and closer communities Create a better place to live, work and play Neighbourhood Watch is not just about reducing burglary figures - it’s about creating communities who care. It brings local people together and can make a real contribution to improving their lives. The activity of Watch members can foster a new community spirit and a belief in the community’s ability to tackle problems. At the same time, you feel secure, knowing your neighbours watching out for you and your property.

What can Neighbourhood Watch schemes do?

These are the key steps to targeting and reducing crime and the fear of crime in an area.

In consultation with your local police: get a picture of local crime conduct a ‘fear of crime’ survey target crimes you can have a real impact on identify the opportunities for crime form an action plan to tackle the problem block or reduce opportunities for the criminal.
