Catwalk Show Escape Hair & Beauty have reached their 10th year in business this year and are celebrating by hosting a hair and fashion catwalk show in aid of charity for Severn Hospice.

The catwalk show is to take place at The Park Inn, Telford on Tuesday 20th October, doors will open at 6:30pm and the show will commence at 7pm.

Gary Raybould, owner of Escape has over 25 years experience in the hairdressing industry and has worked in many different salons during this time. Gary set up his own salon called U2 in November 2003 which is based in Donnington, Telford. In addition to U2 he went on to open his first Escape salon in October 2005 which is in Wellington, Telford. The Wellington salon has been so successful that Gary went on to open two further Escape salons, one in Madeley in June 2013 and once in Shifnal in August 2014.

Whether long, short or in-between, afro, curly, wavy or straight, our hair is one of the first things people notice about us. The right style can detract from imperfections, and tells the world a little something about our personality. It can make us more self-assured; more confident in the workplace and social situations. I have a confession – until recently I didn’t own a hairbrush.

I just used my daughter’s, which is shaped like Hello Kitty, but does the job. Thankfully, now I am the proud owner of a Wet Brush, the US’s bestselling hairbrush, which detangles wet or dry hair like a dream. My daughter is also a fan, as it doesn’t pull as much, which is making mornings rather more pleasant. The Wet Brush costs £11.99 from www. cultbeauty.co.uk.

If you only make one change to your haircare regime, swap to a gentler, more natural shampoo. Most high street shampoos contain Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, which can strip your hair of essential oils, leaving it limp and lifeless. A gentler alternative is Green People Quinoa &

which are designed to nourish and protect damaged hair. The quinoa and artichoke leaf work together to condition, minimise frizz, strengthen and protect from UV radiation.

Curly and coily haired women have cause to celebrate, with the release of Aveda Be Curly Co-Wash, £17.50, which cleanses hair, while preserving moisture and minimising frizz. The key ingredients are organic babassu oil and baobab oil.

Subrina Kidd, Aveda UK’s Textured Hair Specialist, explains, “Regular cleansing shampoos can often

leave hair looking and feeling dry and brittle – this low-lather, sulfate-free formula will refresh and revive the hair texture or curl pattern without removing necessary moisture. To avoid tangling, sub-divide the hair into four sections, massage the Co-Wash into each section, comb through and then rinse thoroughly.”

Looking for a salon-style deep conditioning treatment? Try Philip Kingsley Geranium & Neroli Elasticizer, £31.50, a pre-shampoo conditioning treatment that contains neroli, geranium, lavender, rose and orange oils.

The Elasticizer has been around for a few years now, and has won numerous awards and accolades.

This new version looks set to be just as successful, as it leaves hair soft, bouncy and easier to style. While you can just apply it a few minutes before showering, for best results lather it on before bed. It may seem pricey, but a little goes a long way, so you’ll get a fair few weekly treatments from each jar.

Intensive conditioning treatments tend to work best if you cover up with a shower cap.

Beauty This issue we’re looking at make-up, including the key trends for autumn/ winter.

As your tan fades, you may find that you want slightly more foundation. ’Contouring’ is the art of using different shades to add definition to your face. Lighter tones highlight areas and make them stand out slightly, while darker tones add shadow and depth. If you’ve been thinking of trying contouring, but are worried that it will take hours, or make you look a bit fake, read on for our cheat’s guide…

Start with an overall base that’s the same tone as your natural skin, before adding slightly darker shades under your cheekbones and along your jawline. Use a lighter shade on top of the cheekbones, under the eyes and between your eyebrows. And don’t forget to blend well! If you’re still not convinced, try searching online for video tutorials. MAC has some great ones on its website, for example. When it comes to the product itself, a cream tends to give a fresher appearance. Iconic

good choice, as it has several easy-to-apply shades in one kit, which also double-up as eyeshadows.

SHADES OF AUTUMN If you don’t fancy contouring, but do want to add a touch of colour to your cheeks,

Want to master the perfect autumnal smokey eye? Neal’s Yard Remedies tells us how*: • Apply a tawny brown shadow over the entire eyelid and up into the socket line using a medium eyeshadow brush.

Apply to the lower lash line with a small eyeshadow brush.

• Using a medium brush, apply a dark hazelnut shade to the outer corner of the lid and blend into the crease of the socket line.

Blend the colours using soft back and forth strokes. Apply dark brown mascara.

• Press a dark chocolate eyeliner into the eyelash roots, moving along the upper lash line. Go over this with a precise line, staying close to the lashes.

Draw eyeliner along the lower lash line from the outer to the inner corner.

Statement lips don’t have to be red. We love Bobbi Brown’s new Lip Trio in Twilight Glow, £39 – the perfect shade for autumn. One of the key looks for this season is ‘polished’.

Think sophisticated, ‘grown-up’ make-up. The Lip Trio is perfect for this, as it gives you perfectly defined lips, with just a hint of gloss.

Victoriana looks set to become another one of this season’s key looks. Forget soft romantic frills though; this is Victoriana with an edge. Think dark, gothic eroticism. If you don’t fancy going the whole shebang, you can dip your toe (or fingertip) in the water with a dark red or purple nail varnish. Telford Startup Skinsincere Telford-based startup SkinSincere are set to host a Charity Launch Ball next month to raise money for local charity Hope House Children’s Hospices. The event is open to local businesses and individuals alike, and will be taking place on Friday 9th October from 7pm until 1am, at the Madeley Court Hotel.

Recipe MALTED CHOCOLATE CAKE THIS CAKE IS THE PERFECT FAMILY TREAT, and a real crowd-pleaser. The malt extract gives a lovely creaminess to the sponge, while the malted chocolate flavour is echoed in the cake’s topping.

SERVES 8–10 PREPARE AHEAD The filling will remain soft and ready to use in a bowl covered with cling film for 2–3 days. The finished cake can be kept in an airtight container for up to a day.

FREEZE Freeze the cake and icing separately, then defrost at room temperature and assemble when ready to serve.

Ingredients: • 30g (1oz) malted chocolate drink powder • 30g (1oz) cocoa powder • 225g (8oz) butter, softened, plus extra for greasing • 225g (8oz) caster sugar • 225g (8oz) self-raising flour • 1 tsp baking powder • 4 eggs

For the Icing: • 3 tbsp malted chocolate drink powder • 1.5 tbsp hot milk • 125g (4.5oz) butter, softened • 250g (9oz) icing sugar, plus extra for dusting • 50g (2oz) dark chocolate (at least • 50 per cent cocoa solids), melted • 1 tbsp boiling water • about 20 Maltesers, to decorate

1. You will need two 20cm (8in) round sandwich tins. Preheat the oven to 180°C/160°C fan/Gas 4 and grease the tins with butter and line the bases with baking paper.

2. Measure the malted chocolate drink powder and cocoa powder into a large bowl, pour over 2 tablespoons of water and mix to a paste. Add the remaining cake ingredients and beat until smooth.

3. Divide evenly between the prepared tins and bake in the oven for 20–25 minutes. Set aside in the tins to cool for 5 minutes, then turn out on to a wire rack to cool completely.

4. To make the icing, measure the malted chocolate drink powder into a bowl, add the hot milk and mix until smooth.

Add the butter, icing sugar and melted chocolate and mix again until smooth, then add the boiling water to give a gloss to the icing.

5. Place one cake on a plate and spread over half the icing.

Sandwich with the other cake and spread (or pipe) the remaining icing on top, using the tip of a rounded palette knife to create a swirled effect from the centre to the edge of the cake. Arrange the Maltesers over the top and dust with icing sugar before serving.

Restaurant Review

Peppers is a very modern style Indian restaurant situated at the end of a row of shops on the Trench Road in Telford; with many parking spaces available right outside.

The restaurant is not licensed so customers are welcome to bring their own alcoholic beverages and with a convenience store right next door selling alcohol, you won’t have to worry if you forget to grab a bottle on your way out.

The restaurant interior has a modern contemporary style with striking red leather bench seats. The restaurant is well spaced out and there are tables to suit any size party from large round tables to intimate tables for two.

Peppers specialise in tandoori and balti dishes so there are plenty of these dishes to choose from on the menu. There are also a varied choice of chef’s signature meals offering something a little different to the traditional dishes.

We nearly always end up ordering onion bhaji’s for our starters but decided to try something different for a change, I ordered the Nargis Kebab and Nik ordered the Prawn on Puree.

My starter looked very impressive when it arrived and I was equally impressed with the taste, there was a boiled egg that was wrapped in spicy lamb mince which was slightly crispy on the outside (a bit like a spicy scotch egg) and then a thin omelette had been wrapped around it and was served with a lovely fresh salad. The mix of flavours and textures in the dish were fantastic and it is something I would certainly order again.

FINDING THE BEST PLACES TO EAT IN AND AROUND SHROPSHIRE

Nik was also pleased with his choice which consisted of a soft light buttery pancake topped with spiced juicy prawns cooked in a tomato based sauce with onions, garlic, mix of spices and herbs and a slice of lemon to add a little zest to the dish. Nik asked the waiter if the dish was available as a main course as he fancied having that again next time we visited, apparently most of the starters can be ordered as a main meal which will be served as a bigger portion.

FOOD & ENTERTAINMENT Again for our mains we decided to try one of the less traditional dishes and we both selected something from the chef’s signature list. Nik chose the Balti Lal Morchi which is one of the hotter dishes and I ordered the Chicken Gohor which is a medium spiced dish. We also ordered a fried rice and a Pista Nan Pistachio to share with our mains.

My Chicken Gohor was served on a hot skillet which was still sizzling when it arrived at the table. There was a breast of chicken served off the bone and sliced into long chunky strips which has been marinated in a delicious sauce with onions and red capsicum and cooked in a dry sauce, there were also large potato wedges layered in-between the slices of chicken. My meal was full of flavour, the chicken was perfectly cooked and the potatoes worked perfectly in the dish. I scooped up every last bit of the sauce with my nan bread, I hadn’t tried the pistachio one before but I much preferred this to the keema nan (which is always Nik’s preferred choice), it was thinner and slightly crispier and had small pieces of crunchy pistachios.

Nik’s Balti Lal Morchi was full of large tender chunks of marinated lamb in a tasty thick spicy rich sauce and a good sprinkling of hot roasted chillies for that extra kick. You can always tell when Nik has eaten something hot as he starts to hiccup, which didn’t take long on this occasion - the chillies were certainly on the hot side!

For dessert we both fancied the Banana Fritter which was served with a sticky banana sauce - the batter was very light and crisp with a lovely soft banana inside - a perfect finish to a great meal.

Manager Abdul Mothin has been running the restaurant for fifteen years and says, “Peppers believe in providing good food at a competitive prices. All dishes are cooked freshly to order and can be prepared specifically to your own requirements. Using only the best quality spices to make our own recipes and prepared daily to make sure that all dishes have their own distinctive flavour, aroma and quality. All Balti dishes are cooked in a wok and take around 15-30 minutes to prepare to ensure the meal will be to your liking with desired strength and taste.”

THE BEST TECH FOR WATCHING TV

It’s hard to imagine now, but a twelve-inch TV with four channels was pretty hot stuff not so long ago. Today, of course, we have TVs as big as some houses’ walls, and more things to watch on them than ever before. But what tech actually makes your viewing better?

There are two kinds of technology to think about here. There’s the technology in the screen and the speakers, and there’s the technology that you can connect to a TV to add more options.

Despite the hype it seems that 3D TV is dead: the technology never took off, probably because nobody wanted to wear daft glasses all the time. Manufacturers still want to sell us stuff, though, so their latest wheeze is 4K TV, also known as Ultra HD. 4K TVs can display four times more pixels than HD TVs, and the result should be a dramatically improved picture.

That’s the theory, but what the manufacturers don’t tell you is that in a typical home, you won’t get the benefit: on screens smaller than about 55 inches, unless you sit with your nose on the screen you’ll be hard pushed to see any difference. There’s also precious little 4K content available just now: none of the UK broadcasters offer 4K programming.

Manufacturers are also experimenting with shapes, and some firms are now offering curved TVs. The intention is to deliver a more involving experience - like IMAX does compared to normal cinemas but curved screens need you to sit right in the middle to get the full effect, which means they aren’t ideal for family viewing unless you’ll all sit in each other’s laps.

The best TVs around just now are LED HD TVs. The LED bit refers to the way they’re lit: by using ultra-low power LED lights, LED TVs use much less energy than other flat screens.

If you’re in the market for a new TV, don’t forget about sound. Modern TVs’ ultra-slim cases don’t have enough room for good speakers, so most flat-screen TVs sound awfully tinny: many of them sound like you’re watching TV on a laptop. It’s worth investing in a soundbar - a long speaker bar that’s designed to sit under the TV and add oomph - or an audio-visual amplifier and speakers if you like your programmes loud.

You’ll find that many TVs today are “smart TVs”, which means they can connect to the internet and access services such as Netflix or Amazon Prime Instant Video (at a cost: Netflix and Amazon are subscription services) plus YouTube and catch-up services such as BBC iPlayer.

If you’d like to have the same services on an existing TV there are several inexpensive ways to do it, provided your TV has a spare HDMI socket (most relatively recent ones should do) and you have a Wi-Fi network to connect to. Google’s £30 Chromecast and Amazon’s £35 Fire TV Stick both deliver catch-up TV and Netflix over the internet (Amazon’s box also offers Amazon video), while Sky’s Now TV (£20) doesn’t have Netflix but does deliver catch-up services such as iPlayer. And if you’re an Apple fan, the £57 Apple TV adds Netflix, YouTube, Apple Music and iTunes videos and video rentals - although be careful if you’re considering buying one, as we’re expecting a brand new version to be released any day now.

REDUCE YOUR ENERGY BILLS

How can you update your property to keep you snug and cosy – without paying huge energy bills? Is it even possible?

Well, yes. A few simple measures – we are not talking wind turbines and solar panels – can make an enormous difference, says Katherine Sorrell.

Step One – Get to know your home What is your home made from? How was it originally built, and what changes, if any, have been made to it over the years?

Getting to know what is going on inside and outside your four walls will make it easier to work out how you can ecoimprove the property.

Step Two – What are its weak points?

It may already be obvious what problems need solving. Rattling, draughty windows, gaps around the edges of the front door, heat escaping through the roof, perhaps. For more specifics, however, it could be helpful to commission a professional test for air tightness and heat loss. Best done on a cold, clear winter’s night (so try to plan ahead), it is non-invasive and shouldn’t cost a great deal more than around £300. The results will demonstrate exactly where you have the most serious problems, helping you to target improvements where they are most needed.

Step Three – The loft Although there is no one-size-fits-all solution, your loft will often be the top priority for eco-improvement. Marianne Suhr, historic buildings surveyor and co-author of Old House Eco Handbook (Frances Lincoln, £30), recommends laying 300mm of quilt insulation – but points out that it is important to retain some form of ventilation in the space in order to avoid condensation.

There is a range of insulation materials on offer at varying prices, but she says that if you can afford natural materials, such as sheep’s wool or hemp, they tend to be better for older properties, as they have the ability to absorb water vapour and release it. And, she adds, check your loft regularly for signs of condensation, mould and small animals.

Step Four - Windows Your windows can leak out a lot of heat, especially if they are old and single glazed. Short of double glazing, good draught proofing is the answer. Those DIY self-adhesive strips are only a temporary measure; for a longer-term solution you will need to cut in a rebate and fit either compression seals (hinged windows) or wipers (sashes). Alternatively, if you don’t open your windows often, secondary glazing will dramatically improve both air tightness and heat loss through the glass. There are plenty of different options, including clear panels that simply fix to the window frame with a slim magnetic strip, which are unobtrusive and easy to remove. Or there are two old-fashioned methods: thick, lined curtains, hung close to the wall so draughts can’t

creep around the edges; or timber shutters, which have been demonstrated to be even more effective than double glazing.

Step Five: Doors Do your external doors fit well in their frames? If not, it can have a negative impact on your home’s energy efficiency.

To make them airtight, adjust as necessary for a good fit, add draught proofing (as for windows) and cover keyholes, letter slots and cat flaps. You might even want to pop a good old ‘sausage dog’ along the bottom edge, or hang a long, thick curtain from a hinged rod.

Step Six: Floors Surprisingly, it’s actually a good thing to have wind whistling below your suspended timber floor, the reason being that it will evaporate moisture from the timber and supporting structures and keep your home nice and dry. So don’t block up the air grilles on the outside walls. Instead, to make the floor itself as airtight as possible, a fitted carpet with a thermal underlay is perfect, or – if you prefer timber boards – seal gaps around the skirting boards with foam strips, a bead of silicon mastic or slivers of matching timber. If the boards have gaps, experts recommend fillets of balsa wood or lengths of string, which you can stain, glue and push into place relatively easily. And, if you can get below the boards (via a cellar or crawl space), or are planning to lift them, it’s a great idea to add insulation underneath.

Step Seven: Walls It is usually pretty straightforward to insulate modern cavity walls; older, solid walls, however, are more of a problem, and experts don’t always agree on the best way to go about it.

Modern systems may trap moisture and cause damp, but one good option is to add timber panelling inside, leaving an air gap behind. If you are planning major works, it may be possible to add external or internal insulation at the same time, but be sure to get impartial advice.

Quick Tips • Consider installing shutters. A test by Glasgow Caledonian University found that well-fitted timber shutters reduced heat loss by 60% (they are good for sound insulation and security too). To work most efficiently, they should meet with a rebated edge and include a brush strip or rubber seal.

• A thick rug will help to reduce draughts through gaps in floorboards.

• Adding a pelmet to a window treatment can help to reduce draughts and stop warm air disappearing down the back of your curtains or blind.

When radiators are placed below windows, their heat can disappear more easily, especially when there is a curtain hanging over them – as it simply directs heat up and behind, rather than into the room. Consider moving radiators to internal walls.

THE TOOLS AND TECH THAT WILL MAKE YOUR BELOVED’S UNI LIFE BETTER

University is a time for studying, socialising and watching cult movies, and gadgets play a crucial part in all of those activities. So what technology should your teen or twentysomething be packing?

A laptop or a tablet is essential, and now that Windows 10 is available there are stacks of great laptops at rock-bottom prices. Most of the market is concentrated in the sub-£300 price range, but if you can afford to spend a little bit more you’ll be rewarded with better screens, more storage and smoother processors - all of which come in handy for both work and play.

Don’t forget about a printer, too, but make sure you look into the cost of cartridges: many firms use the Gillette model, where the razor is given away at a loss and the money is made on the blades. Inkjet printers are notorious for this, so a printer that costs £30 might cost twice as much to run as a printer costing just a little bit more.

Your child will need software too. Microsoft Office is the standard, although some specialist courses may require specialist software such as statistical analysis software. If it’s Office, though, the Office 365 for University deal is superb value for money: It’s £59.99 for a four-year subscription that covers 2 PCs, Macs or tablets, including iPads and Android devices. It also offers 1TB of online storage. If you don’t go for Office, it’s still worth looking at Microsoft’s free OneNote program, which is available for PCs and Macs, iPads, iPhones and Android and which is a truly superb note-taking application. Apps can be great for non-uni things too: we love Paprika for storing recipes, Readly for magazines and Spotify or Apple Music for tunes.

A few low-tech devices are smart buys too. A simple carbon monoxide detector can be a genuine life-saver, especially in rented accommodation where landlords don’t always carry out the checks and maintenance they should. A Leatherman multi-tool or one of its many imitators is great too, offering pliers, wire cutters, files, screwdrivers, bottle openers and can openers in a single device.

One important issue for students is internet access. If it’s available in their flat or halls of residence, great, but if it isn’t you might be better off with mobile broadband rather than messing around with the hassle of fixed-line broadband connections with their minimum contracts. Three’s MiFi device is a little box that connects to the phone network and offers a wireless connection for phones, tablets and computers. Prices start at £10.87 per month and the devices work anywhere with 4G data coverage, which means most big towns and cities.

Another wireless item to consider is a wireless speaker. The best ones use Bluetooth to connect to computers, phones or tablets, and if you avoid the very low end of the market you can get surprisingly good sound for surprisingly little money. Decent wireless speakers start at around £200, although it’s possible to spend much more. Unless you’re feeling flush and your child’s really into music, though, there’s no real need to do that.

Last but not least, there’s the smartphone. In the unlikely event that your child doesn’t already have one, a decent Android phone such as the Motorola Moto G costs less than £150. It’s easy to program your own number into the speed dial and create a wallpaper that says CALL YOUR MOTHER.

Around Britain UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITES 1. Bath Famous for being the site of the only naturally hot spring in the Britain, Bath was granted official city status by Elizabeth I in 1590 and went on to become a popular resort in the Georgian era, the period from which many of the city’s most beautiful buildings originate. The City of Bath was appointed a World Heritage Site in 1987.

BMW i8

It looks like something from the set of Star Wars, drives like a supercar and costs £100,000. James Baggott finds out if the i8 is the car we’ve all been waiting for.

What is it?

It’s rare a genuine landmark car arrives on the scene, but BMW have pulled it off with the simply staggering i8. Not only does it look like something from a science fiction movie, it has the technology from one too – but the good news here is this car is very real indeed. This is the German firm’s stake in the ground in the electric car market and proves supercars don’t necessarily need V8s to stir the emotions. Apparently.

What’s under the bonnet?

Ok, concentrate now, because this is a little bit more complicated than usual. The i8 features a turbocharged 1.5-litre three-pot engine that’s hidden behind the rear seats. Doesn’t sound very exciting, we agree, but there’s also a 129bhp electric motor which combines for an overall power output of 357bhp and 570Nm. That’s plenty of punch, enough to help it crack 60mph in 4.4 seconds and reach a top speed of 155mph. But the really interesting thing is it does all that while returning an incredible 134.5mpg and emitting just 49g/km.

What’s the spec like?

Well, first up it’s worth noting this is a 2+2 so if you’ve got kids, or small adult friends, you can slot them in the back and take them along for the ride. There are also those awesome dihedral gullwing doors to marvel at every time you get in and out. Don’t expect to enter a petrol station and leave any time soon. Specification includes all the usual niceties you’d expect – such as Sat Nav, DAB radio, Bluetooth, heated seats and leather. Lovely.

What do the press think?

Auto Express praised it for its ‘stunning looks, low running costs and strong performance’, however they said the seats were cramped and the boot was small. Autocar added: ‘BMW would have you believe that the new i8 is the sports car of the future - and it’s a believable claim.’

What’s it like to drive?

It’s like driving the future. From the moment you squeeze yourself through those funky doors across the wide carbon fibre sills to the minute you notice it glows blue inside at night, you feel like you’re starring in your very own Back to the Future movie. It makes an incredible noise as you power on, much of which is piped into the cabin via the speakers, but it’s still exciting nonetheless. It feels quick too. You sit low in the cabin, and with a rapid six-speed automatic gearbox that changes so fast you feel like it’s constantly accelerating, the sensations are heightened even more.

Our Verdict If you’re looking for something that will stand out from the crowd and is packed with clever technology, the BMW i8 really is the supercar for you. It’s great to drive, turns heads like few other machines on the road and offers amazing eco credentials to boot. But at £100,000 it’s not cheap and we can’t help thinking a BMW M4 would offer just as many thrills in the driving department. But that’s not the point of the i8 - this car is about showcasing new technology and highlighting BMW’s electric car range, and it does that job very well indeed. And, if we’re honest, we’re very glad it’s here indeed.

I’m not convinced electric cars are all they are made out to be. I don’t believe the hype about “zero emissions” - that an electric car is somehow non-damaging to the environment because there’s no CO2 emitted.

Well, unless it’s charged up with fairy-dust, where’s the electricity coming from? Over 75% of the UK’s electricity is fossil fuel generated. In essence, electric cars push their emissions down the energy generation chain and add to the load on the grid too.

Then there’s the problem of limited range.

Batteries are the Achilles heel of the electric car. Consider your phone as an example. Ten years ago, Nokia’s 6310 would go about a week between charges. But today’s smartphones need a top-up pretty much daily. Battery technology has lagged behind electronics, and will continue to do so.

Of course, burning oil has issues. We all know that, but consider

Within 5 years of the government introducing road tax based on CO2 emissions, manufacturers had introduced engines that produced the same, or sometimes more, power yet produced less CO2. In fact, per vehicle, income from road tax has dropped each year as a result.

Here’s another pointer to the efficiency of modern engines.

Bentley’s L series engine has been produced since 1959. In that time, it has been continuously developed, to the point that the current version will run on the emissions of the original.

Like it or not, the internal combustion engine will still keep us rolling for a while yet. *The word petroleum comes from the Latin petra, meaning ‘rock’ and oleum, meaning ‘oil’.

Delightful Dordogne

The sun is warm, the light translucent and it feels like the South of France. Here on the edge of the Massif Central, the Dordogne river meanders, emerald green or silvery blue, turbulent or placid, shaping the land with fertile valleys and cliffs, gorges and caves.

Now imagine four boys chasing after their dog, stumbling upon caves no one knew existed. That was in 1940 when Lascaux began to reveal its 17,000 year old frescoes, so stunning the site became known as the ‘Sistine Chapel of Prehistory’. Today it is closed to the public for preservation but visitors from all over the world gaze in wonder at the superb replicas while the nearby troglodyte dwellings beckon, dark and eerie, on the cliff face.

Meanwhile fortified villages and castles recall the Middle-Ages when French and English, Catholics and non-conformists, struggled to ascertain their power across these bucolic lands.

The Dordogne region covers roughly the four ancient counties of the old Périgord province, rich in history and wildlife and in the northern reaches, part of the Périgord-Limousin Regional Nature Park. Each area is named after its dominant colour: ‘Green Périgord’ in the north, for its lush valleys; ‘White’ in the centre for its limestone plateaux and shepherd huts around Périgueux, best known for its Roman remains and cathedral; ‘Purple’ in the south for the vineyards of Bergerac; and ‘Black’ in the east for the oak and pine forests around Sarlat.

Tucked in a hollow between the Dordogne and its tributary the Vézère, Sarlat is a pleasant market town and a true architectural gem draped in glowing honey-coloured stone. There are elegant town houses, turrets and spires, wrought-iron balconies, archways, steep roofs, fairy tale gables and a Goose Square to remember the old trade. Restaurants set up their tables in quiet gardens and the market is a head-spinning feast of colour and fragrance, olives, truffles in season, asparagus, aubergines, courgettes, strawberries, freshly-baked country bread, cheeses and traditional duck and goose products.

Sarlat has no river of its own but the Dordogne is just a stone’s throw away, rising in the Auvergne and flowing west for nearly 500 km to join the Garonne and form the Gironde estuary. But this is indeed a special river for in July 2012, the Dordogne and its watershed were designated Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO, proof that in this delightful corner of rural France, locals live in harmony with the natural world.

Whiplash Associated Disorder WAD is a recognised condition or set of symptoms commonly presenting after the cervical spine is subjected to an excessive external force for example after a road traffic accident or a fall. The actual cause of injury is due to the rapid acceleration and declaration of the neck.

WAD has been classified on a scale of 0 being no complaint and no signs or symptoms; right through to IV, being neck fracture with permanent impairment. With grades in between including muscle pain and stiffness as well as loss in motion of the neck, it can be a very painful injury.

Prior to the invention of the car, the condition was known as railroad spine and the condition was first documented as long ago as 1919 after neck pain was expressed by several passengers after a train collision.

Research by consultants around the world has been extensive trying to determine why a number of studies have not been able to explain why any real pathology can not be diagnosed. More recent studies suggest that the upper trapezius muscles that are found running from the neck down to the shoulders and mid spine are the missing link. It is

thought they become injured as they eccentrically lengthen through the acceleration phase.

In terms of management, most WAD will make a quick complete recovery, others may require physiotherapy and pain management. The most important contributing factor to making a full recovery is movement. Previously, cervical spine collars and rest have been the advised treatment. The emphasis now is on regaining normal movements through the joints and soft tissues as quickly as possible by carrying out gentle stretching and range of movement exercises.

In some more serious presentations physiotherapy in the form of soft tissue techniques, joint mobilisations and acupuncture are just some techniques we can perform on a patient to help treat and speed up the process of making a full recovery.

UNDERSTANDING PSORIASIS

World Psoriasis Day on 29th October aims to increase awareness and understanding of psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis, which affect around 1.8 million people in the UK. What is psoriasis?

Psoriasis is an immune disorder that affects the skin, commonly causing crusty, red patches of skin with a silvery, scaly surface on the scalp, lower back, elbows or knees, although they can appear elsewhere. Severity varies from person to person and sufferers may experience calmer periods alternated with flare-ups.

Types of Psoriasis Plaque psoriasis (psoriasis vulgaris) This accounts for around 80% of cases, causing ‘plaques’: dry, red lesions with a scaly, silver surface that may be itchy or sore.

Nail psoriasis This causes discolouration, or small dents in the nails and in severe cases, crumbling.

Scalp psoriasis Red patches with thick silver scales appear over parts or the whole of the scalp, sometimes causing severe itching or temporary hair loss.

Guttate psoriasis Guttate psoriasis causes tiny sores on the chest, arms, legs and scalp and is more common amongst young people, often occurring after a streptococcal throat infection.

Inverse (flexural) psoriasis This causes large, smooth red patches in skins creases, e.g. at the groin, armpits, under the breasts and between the buttocks.

Pustular psoriasis Pustular psoriasis is rare. Generalised pustular psoriasis (von Zumbusch psoriasis) causes pustules over a wide area, often in cycles of a few days or weeks, and can cause fever, weight loss and fatigue. Palmoplantar pustular psoriasis affects the palms and soles; pustules gradually become brown, scaly spots that peel, but may reappear every few days or weeks. Acropustulosis affects fingers and toes, sometimes causing nail deformities. Pustules burst, leaving bright red areas that later become scaly or ooze.

Erythrodermic psoriasis Erythrodermic psoriasis is rare, affecting nearly the whole body. It can cause intense itching or burning and protein and fluid loss, leading to complications such as infection, dehydration, heart failure, hypothermia and malnutrition.

Psoriatic Arthritis (PsA) Rarely, this appears before skin psoriasis, but usually develops after. It causes pain and swelling in joints and connective tissue and is most common in the hands and feet, but may also affect the knees, ankles, hips and lower back.

Who gets psoriasis?

Psoriasis appears more often at 15-30 years old and 50-60 years old. Some sufferers may have a hereditary disposition to it, as one in three have a relative with the condition.

What causes psoriasis?

The immune system mistakenly attacks healthy skin cells, accelerating their renewal cycle to just three to seven days and causing a buildup of skin cells that creates psoriasis lesions. Triggers such as stress, throat infections, excessive alcohol, skin injuries, smoking, some medications, hormonal changes and other immune disorders can initiate or worsen symptoms.

How is psoriasis diagnosed?

Usually visual examination is sufficient, but sometimes a small skin sample is necessary to determine the exact type. You may be referred to a dermatologist (or rheumatologist if psoriatic arthritis is suspected.

How is psoriasis treated?

Topical treatments are tried first, including corticosteroids, vitamin D analogues, Dithranol, retinoids, Calcineurin inhibitors and coal tar.

You may also receive phototherapy, which involves exposing your skin to specific types of ultraviolet light. Severe cases may be treated with oral or injectable medications.

Sitting Comfortably?

IT COULD BE KILLING YOU

Unfortunately, intensive exercise a few times a week isn’t a “cure for too much sitting,” explains Professor Marc Hamilton, from the Pennington Biomedical Research Center, in Men’s Health.

“Exercise is good... but the average person could never do enough to counteract the effect of hours and hours of chair time.” So if you’re spending a long time sitting during those times when you’re not exercising, the damage will still be done.

Tackling the Problem A moderately active lifestyle which includes housework, walking or gardening each day, and also includes regular active breaks during seated tasks such as reading, playing video games, studying and watching TV, is ideal. You could mop the floor, take a quick walk or do a couple of minutes of ‘step’ exercise (a proper exercise step isn’t necessary - your stairs will do). You could also consider: • Reducing your sitting time by standing up when travelling on buses or trains, walking or biking to the station or getting off the bus a stop earlier.

• Standing or walking when you’re on the phone.

Even if you exercise regularly, too much sitting could significantly shorten your life.

With employment and entertainment becoming ever more sedentary, sitting down for hours is the norm for many of us.

But in the last decade, research has increasingly proved that prolonged sitting is a health risk in itself, regardless of how much or how little exercise we do. Sitting for long periods without a break for activity can cause irreversible damage.

Disturbing Research A study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine in 2008 estimated that for every hour we sit in front of the TV after the age of 25, our life expectancy is reduced by 21.8 minutes, while a 2012 study published in the Lancet estimated that inactivity causes 9% of premature deaths. So exactly how does sitting shorten life expectancy?

Recent studies have showed a 147% increase in the incidence of cardiovascular events (any incident causing damage to the heart muscle) and a 112% increase in the risk of diabetes amongst those spending longest sitting, compared to those who sat least. Physical inactivity has been proven to increase the risk of breast and colon cancers too.

Unsurprisingly, obesity is also linked to prolonged periods of inactivity, and James Levine, Director of the Mayo Clinic-Arizona State University Obesity Solutions Initiative, told the Los Angeles Times last year that he believes sitting is more dangerous than smoking. “We are sitting ourselves to death.”

Scientists are still studying the exact mechanisms by which sitting causes these health problems. There’s long-standing evidence that prolonged inactivity results in decreased bone density, and increasing evidence that inactivity reduces the action of enzymes that keep our cholesterol and triglycerides at healthy levels. Some experts believe there is a link to the accelerated ageing, bone and muscle loss that occurs in astronauts, suggesting that the effects of prolonged sitting may partially resemble those of zero gravity - and so have the same negative consequences.

• Investing in a standing desk. You can buy standing desks and ones that quickly convert between normal and standing too, but there are also cheaper options – shelves and stands that will easily convert your normal desk to one you can use while standing.

• Investing in a treadmill desk (or attaching a bracket or stand to your treadmill). They can take a bit of getting used to, though.

• Investing in a yoga ball. Yes, you’re still sitting, but to retain your balance you will be making small adjustments with your core muscles all the time.

• Going for a walk or organising a sporting activity at lunchtime, rather than spending your whole lunch hour sitting at your desk or in a cafe.

• Using the Pomodoro Technique (you can find out more about it here: http://pomodorotechnique.com/). This is a time management technique that will ensure you take regular breaks, but it’s up to you to ensure some or most them are used for something active.

• Practising Active Sitting. Every so often, do some exercises while you’re sitting at your desk. It’s not a replacement for getting up and walking around, but it will make your sitting time healthier. For instance, you could raise your heels up and down several times; contract your stomach muscles; raise and lower your lower leg from knee height or your whole leg from hip height; swivel your office chair from side to side with your hips, while keeping your torso stationary; tense, stretch and bend your arms; roll your shoulders.

The best way to avoid the dangers of sitting for too long is to stop every time you’re about to start a task, and yourself: does this have to be done sitting down? If the answer is no, then don’t sit down to do it. Bear in mind, however, that constant standing isn’t ideal either. Experts recommend that you aim for a 50/50 split between sitting and standing or activity.

Upgrading to Windows 10

As you are most likely aware by now, at the end of July this year Microsoft released Windows 10 and made it available to many computers running Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 as a free upgrade (provided you choose to upgrade within the first year of its release). Also, Microsoft took the decision to deliver a ‘Get Windows 10’ (GWX) app to many existing Windows 7/8.1 computers (using the Windows Update mechanism) to make the upgrade process straightforward, and indeed to strongly encourage you to accept the upgrade. The GWX app manifests itself via the little white Windows logo icon that appears in the notification area of your desktop.

that you can revert to your previous copy of Windows if needed (IF you do this within 30 days of upgrading!). Before doing so, though, you should as a minimum backup all your important data to guard against any serious problems that may arise. If you have the ability to perform a socalled ‘image backup’, do that first. There are also a few post-upgrade tasks that you should perform to get the most from Windows 10.

you should strongly consider upgrading. There are few compatibility problems that you are likely to encounter, and there are a number of benefits to upgrading, not least the elimination of Windows 8.1’s schizophrenic use of the ‘Modern UI’ (Start Screen, etc.) and separate desktop paradigms.

There is no obligation to upgrade, and this article focusses on whether you, as an end-user, should upgrade and how you go about it if you do. The discussion here does not apply to corporate environments, as they are subject to very different considerations.

If you have Windows 7 on your computer, the decision is more difficult. If you have older or specialised applications (for instance, CRM or other database applications) you might encounter compatibility problems, and older hardware - say, pre-2012 - you may well suffer performance issues. Dealing with these in some cases is entirely manageable, but requires more advanced configuration and/or possibly software upgrades. While these guidelines are necessarily very general, you may have other overriding considerations (e.g., a strong curiosity!) that make the decision easier to arrive at.

Unclaimed prizes If you bought Premium Bonds in the dim and distant past, it might be worthwhile looking on the NS&I website where there’s an ‘unclaimed prizes’ finder. With no time limit for claiming, even bonds from 1957 are still valid, and there is a reported £41 million yet to be claimed.

Premium Bonds were first introduced in 1956 by Harold MacMillan as a way to reduce inflation, and they remain a popular savings choice today. It is estimated that over £50 billion is held in the Premium Bond ‘pot,’ making them the largest savings product in the UK. Not a ‘standard’ savings option, bonds pay no interest and never expire. They can make you a millionaire though, if you are lucky enough to win one of the two £1 million draws each month.

How do they work?

Bonds up to the value of £50,000 can now be bought following a recent rise in the maximum limit. At the other end of the scale you can purchase a single bond for £1, with all bonds being entered into a monthly prize draw.

Premium Bond numbers are picked at random by ERNIE (Electronic Random Number Indicator Equipment), and you can check whether you’re a winner via the NS&I website from the third day of each month.

The government funds the prize money by calculating a rate of interest as if the bonds were ‘standard’ government bonds, rather than using money from the sale of new Premium Bonds.

You can buy them from a post office, or directly from NS&I by phone or online.

How much can you win?

Winnings range from £25 to the £1 million jackpot, with prizes also including a percentage of £25,000, £50,000 and £100,000 wins each month. Returns average the equivalent of around 1.3% according to Moneywise, who also state that the chance of winning from a single bond are approximately 1 in 26,000.� You can be lucky though – the Guardian recently reported a £1 million jackpot winner who had held just £400 worth of bonds.

For those wanting a reliable income from their savings, however, other products would be more suitable if they are willing to forego instant access in favour of higher interest rates.

What are the main benefits of Premium Bonds?

• All winnings are tax-free – a big draw for some people, especially as ISA rates remain low • Bonds can be cashed in with no notice needed • They can be purchased for a child or grandchild with a minimum investment of £100 (unless you are paying by standing order, in which case it is £50)

Premium Bonds cannot be passed on to someone else on the death of the holder. They remain eligible to win prizes for 12 months, but can be cashed in at any time. NS&I also provide a tracing service, not just for Premium Bonds, but for any of their savings and investment products.

Should you choose Premium Bonds over traditional savings accounts?

The problem with Premium Bonds is that because you are not guaranteed a return on your money, the investment could reduce in value over time due to inflation. Other savings accounts, even though their interest rate may be low, offset this issue a little.

If you are a higher rate tax payer, you may find investing in Premium Bonds useful if you have already exhausted other taxfree options. People often buy bonds after inheriting money, or sometimes when they need to ‘store’ a lump sum temporarily – a deposit on a property or an inheritance, for example.

So in general terms, Premium Bonds should probably not be the first choice for savings – the main attraction for many is the potential chance of a big win.

On a lighter note ERNIE has become something of a celebrity over the years.

According to NS&I he receives Valentine’s and Christmas cards – possibly from bond holders trying to court favour and influence his decisions?

If you do win the £1 million jackpot, don’t expect a cheque through the post. ‘Agent Million’ will call to deliver the news in person. NS&I claim that one Agent Million has informed more than 100 winners of their new millionaire status.

Government’s wishes for Premium Bonds Economic Secretary to the Treasury, Harriet Baldwin, explained the government’s goals regarding Premium Bonds, “Our long-term plan is all about supporting savers and boosting working people’s financial security at all stages of life… That’s why we have increased the amount people can invest in premium bonds for the second time in two years.”

Although not suitable for savers looking for a guaranteed regular income, Premium Bonds offer a way to boost a nest egg. They hold a special place in the nation’s heart – along with ERNIE of course.

CELEBRATE ITS FIRST YEAR

Sing4Fun, a community style choir in Newport, run by Heather and Dale Kynaston, celebrated its 1st year anniversary last month with a party. The mixed voice choir started on September the 11th 2014 and now has a steady membership who meet every Thursday, at the Burton Borough School from 7.45pm to 9.30pm and enjoy each others company whilst singing rock and pop songs from today and times gone by.

Spooky Themed Tile Decorating Workshops Join a Halloween themed, drop-in workshop at Jackfield Tile Museum, near Ironbridge during the October half-term and decorate ceramic tiles with your own colourful spooky designs. It’s that time of year again where many young people are about to embark on a new chapter in their lives as they head off to university.

This suggests that indeed parents are waiting until their own children are a little older and moving out of the family home before becoming foster carers, potentially allowing even more time to be dedicated to the foster children and their needs.

After years of raising and organising children parents can be left with that “empty nest” feeling; not quite knowing how to fill the time now the children are fending for themselves.

Councillor Paul Watling, cabinet member for children, young people and families, said: “People accrue all this parenting knowledge bringing up their own children that is invaluable to us and could be used to foster a local child.

Why not fill that nest back up by becoming a foster carer?

Foster carers are desperately needed to provide stable, loving homes to support children who are unable to live at home for a time, either for a short term or on a longer term basis.

“We need foster carers to look after children of all ages, including sibling groups, and also those children with disabilities.

“So if your children have flown the nest, why not consider giving other young people a loving home and put to use those parenting skills that you have spent years developing.”

Existing parents with older children who have flown the nest could make fantastic foster carers. Bringing up children throughout all of their major milestones provides a wealth of experience and skills that could be so cherished by other children who may not currently have the supportive environment they need.

Recruiting more local foster carers means children have a better chance of remaining near to their families, friends and schools.

Lovely Lawns

Almost every garden has a lawn, and even if you have no aspirations to turn yours into a smart bowling green style creation of smooth perfection, there is a lot you can do to keep the typical UK back garden lawn in good condition. With a bit of work, it will be looking healthy and green over the next year too so, rather than waiting until the spring, you should get to work now with some autumn lawn care.

If there are any large weeds present in small lawns, you are probably best off just removing them by hand, perhaps using a sturdy old kitchen knife – perfect for removing dandelions, small clumps of daisies and other weeds which are so easily missed by the mower. You should also take a look at the level of moss in the lawn. When it is green and luxuriant, I have to confess to rather liking moss – it can look quite attractive and certainly feels pleasant underfoot, but once it dies out the lawn will look really awful, as it will be gappy and bare. On the whole, moss in lawns is encouraged by compaction, poor drainage of the soil and lawn surface and by excessive shading, perhaps by nearby trees or herbaceous plants in adjacent borders which have been allowed to get too big or flop over. It is certainly worth doing anything you can to alleviate these problems, and for shading you should consider pruning back shrubs which overhang the lawn or having nearby trees professionally crown thinned or lifted, so that more light gets through to the lawn. Herbaceous plants are often easily dealt with using a few bamboo canes and some string to create a barrier and ease them up and away from the grass.

Compaction is a relatively easy problem to deal with, and in small areas where the problem is not too bad, you can use a normal garden fork. Drive this into the lawn every 10 – 15 cm (4 – 6 in) and ease it back and forth slightly, so that the holes created by the tines of the fork are enlarged slightly. By spiking the area in this way you will have created some drainage channels, which will also improve aeration. On very heavy sites or if compaction is bad, you are much better off using a special hollow tine

aerator. These are available to buy as attachments for some lawnmowers, or you can buy or hire a dedicated machine or piece of equipment. Each time it is driven into the ground, a hollow tine aerator will remove cylinders of turf and the soil beneath, thus producing a better effect than the simple method of using a garden fork. Once you have created these longer-term drainage channels, you should then brush a sandy top dressing mixture into all the holes. Use a mixture of sieved garden soil and horticultural sand, perhaps mixed with a small quantity of sieved leaf mould. Once in the holes, the top dressing ensures that they are kept open to allow better drainage and aeration over a much longer period of time.

It may also be necessary to kill off the moss if it is really out of control, and for this you can use a proprietary moss killer.

This must be applied exactly according to the manufacturer’s instructions and you should make sure that the moss is killed off completely before you attempt to rake it out. Raking out can be combined with what is known as scarifying, which means that you use a spring tined rake and very aggressively rake the surface of the lawn, so that dead moss, thatch (the accumulated bits of dead grass and other lawn debris) and any other surface debris are removed. Once done, you will find that the lawn looks a lot worse than it did when you started (it can be almost scary!), as it will look thinner and more moth-eaten. However, scarifying helps to ensure that the grasses receive plenty of air and allows for better re-growth; have faith, the situation will improve.

If you have any areas that are completely bare, then once you have improved the texture of the soil and checked that there are no drainage problems, you can re-seed or over-seed the area using a suitable grass-seed mixture. To ensure that the seeds germinate and grow relatively quickly, pin a piece of horticultural fleece or Enviromesh over the newly sown area. This will not only help to keep it a bit warmer, but will also prevent birds from stealing the grass seed.

Will dives back into business...

A Shropshire man who has plumbed the depths of the globe has come back to his roots to join the expanding family firm in the north of the county.

Will Reeves, aged 31, was a former pupil of Bedstone College and left for a life on the high seas as a merchant navy marine engineer, followed by a decade as a commercial diver working in oceans across the world from Nigeria and Japan to the coast of Scotland, firstly as a diver himself and then latterly as a supervisor.

Parents, Graham and Pat Reeves were former dairy farmers and cattle dealers who diversified and are this year celebrating 35 successful years in the timber business at New House Farm, The Lowe, Wem, which is now the largest independent timber merchants in the county.

Pat commented: “From a modest start selling a few railway sleepers in 1980 our timber business has grown steadily over the years and we now supply major outlets such as Travis Perkins and Jewson with a wide range of timber products including telegraph poles, sleepers, posts, barriers, wood bark and our own fencing panels made on site.

“Being traditional farming folk we like to create a trusted and personal approach and believe that this is what has served our business so well with both commercial and domestic customers alike and we are delighted to welcome Will on board as a breath of fresh air for the firm.

Spectacular Family Fireworks See the night sky spectacularly lit up over Blists Hill Victorian Town, near Ironbridge on Saturday evening, 7th November when the townsfolk will be celebrating Guy Fawkes’ foiled Gunpowder Plot with a fantastic family fireworks display.

In October, nature puts on a magnificent show for us to wonder at, as the trees shed their leaves in glorious Technicolor. As the nights draw in and the ‘Fall’ is upon us, snuggle up with a good book about those silent giants standing guard in the garden.

Eucalyptus - Murray Bail Written by an Australian author this is a modern fairy tale about the widower Holland and his beautiful daughter, Ellen. She, along with his vast collection of eucalyptus trees are his two most prized possessions and when Ellen turns nineteen, Holland reveals that he will permit her to marry the man who can successfully identify all the varieties of gum trees on his property.

Of course, Ellen’s not too pleased with the plan, and doesn’t think much of all the suitors who show up at the estate. That is, until a mysterious stranger appears and her curiosity suddenly gets the better of her.

The Lie Tree - Frances Hardinge Faith’s father is found dead, and under mysterious circumstances, leaving Faith determined to get to the bottom of what happened. What she finds is a set of drawings that lead her to a strange tree that seems to flourish and grow when lies are whispered to it, and there are plenty of mistruths to go around in this tiny island community. The Lie Tree’s fruits bear hidden secrets and Faith will have her work cut out to try and separate the truth from the poisonous fiction. Just don’t believe everything you read.

The Faraway Tree - Enid Blyton The Magic Faraway Tree is actually the second story in Enid Blyton’s series, coming after The Enchanted Wood, and is much-loved by children and adults the world over. Joe, Beth and Frannie have moved into to a new house and they discover this fantastic place that is right on their doorstep. They quickly make friends with Moonface, Saucepan Man and Silky the fairy and are transported to different lands and places. The series is a cult classic and it’s like a big bear hug on a chilly October evening.

YOUR WORKING LIFE?

“I don’t want to give up work when I’m older. I just won’t be able to keep working in the same way.”

Factory worker James McArdle’s words will probably resonate with many employees over fifty who are concerned by the prospect of a delayed retirement age.

James, aged 55, is currently employed at a meat processing plant near Basingstoke, a job he has held since the age of twenty-five. However, while he still enjoys the camaraderie of factory work he finds he is increasingly less able to cope with the long shifts he has to work: “My wife laughs at me because nowadays I’m always falling asleep in front of the telly. I’ve also started to get a bit of back pain, so can’t imagine working twelve hour shifts when I’m in my sixties.”

With the pensionable age for men and women inching upwards, there has been much debate over how older people will continue working in jobs they have done all their lives, particularly if those positions are active and demanding.

The state pension age for men is currently 65 and the pensionable age for women is increasing each year, destined to reach the point where the retirement age for a man and a woman will be exactly the same. The government aims to establish a state pension age of 66 for both sexes by the year 2020.

These pension changes affect us at a time when age-related issues such as diminishing eyesight, hearing loss, reduced mobility and a less-than-perfect memory can potentially affect our job performance. But while performance is undoubtedly a key factor when it comes to the employability of older workers, motivation is just as important. What if these workers simply don’t have the will to continue working in the same way, at the same pace?

Reasons to re-evaluate With the prospect of fifteen or sixteen more years in the same job, turning fifty can be the trigger for making some major changes to our work/life balance. If we are still in good health we may want to change our working patterns so we can pursue unfulfilled hopes and dreams, making the most of the active years we have left.

Another reason for change may be the needs of an elderly parent. Helping someone with mobility or health problems remain in their own home (or take up residence in your house) can be challenging, particularly if you are in full time employment. Even with a care package in place, being responsible for someone else’s welfare can take its toll on your time.

So what are the options if you decide to change jobs in late middle age, or perhaps opt to work part-time?

1) Asking your employer if you can work part-time Although you can ask your employer if they would be willing to let you work fewer hours, there is no legal obligation for

them to grant your wish. If the employer says ‘No’ and can demonstrate that your request has been carefully considered, then there’s little you can do.

The good news is that if your employer agrees to let you work part-time, you will still be entitled to the same rights and protections as an employee in full-time work.

2) Looking for a new full or part-time job If you haven’t changed jobs in a while, you will discover that recruitment methods have changed considerably in recent years. Most jobs are posted online and the communication related to your job search (sending covering letters and CVs and receiving invitations to attend interviews) is mainly conducted via email.

The Age and Employment Network (www.taen.org.uk) has published an excellent free guide for older jobseekers which is available under the ‘Resources’ section of their website. If you don’t have access to the internet you can call TAEN on 0300 247 2000 (call charges cost up to 9p per minute on a landline but considerably more on a mobile phone).

Your local Jobcentre Plus will also be able to provide information on finding work, self-employment and training.

However if you’ve given up work voluntarily there may be a risk that benefits (including Jobseekers’ Allowance) will be delayed. If you’re unsure about whether you have a good enough case to quit your job and apply for benefits as you search for a new position, you can call the Acas Helpline on 0300 123 1100 (charges as above apply).

For the moment, James McArdle is happy to continue at the factory where he works but he knows there will come a day when his demanding job will prove too much for him. He is currently learning IT skills so he will be prepared to re-enter the job market, and he advises others to do the same. As he explains: “At my age, change is going to happen: it’s all about being prepared.”

A Stitch in Time Look out for general damage, split leadwork, loose mortar, missing, slipped or broken tiles or slates and anything else suspicious. From inside your loft, check for stains and other evidence of leaks, and examine supporting timbers for signs of deterioration. Brush moss growth off roofs regularly, or else fit copper growth inhibitors. Always be very careful when attempting roof repairs yourself.

It is often a better idea to commission a professional to do the work.

Rainwater goods

Maintaining the fabric of your house – especially if it’s an older property – is, let’s face it, a bit of a chore. But keep on top of it, especially when the weather is good, and you will reap the rewards.

You know the saying about fixing the roof while the sun shines? Well, keeping a regular eye on your property and repairing it when necessary – especially before the onset of winter – is an insurance policy against major problems. Not only will it make life easier in the long run, but it will save money and should also help to maintain the value of your home. As Marianne Suhr, historic buildings surveyor and co-author of Old House Handbook, says: ‘It really is a stitch in time. All buildings can very quickly decline if they are not maintained properly. What starts as a missing roof tile can lead to water ingress, then dry rot, death watch beetle and even structural collapse.’

Where to start? Get to know your home.

Find out what is it made from and how is it built. Are there any particular areas that might give cause for concern? Make a list, and work out how to tackle each area, ensuring you have the necessary equipment and skills – or, if not, call in an expert.

Roofs Twice a year, use binoculars to check the condition of your roof and chimney.

Problems with gutters and downpipes cause damp patches – but are often easily remedied. Wait for heavy rain and walk around the outside of your house, observing where the water is going – is it travelling off the roof and into the gutters, down the downpipes and into the drains? If not, what has gone wrong?

Perhaps leaves, moss or other debris have blocked your rainwater goods, perhaps a joint has come apart, or maybe water is gathering in one area. Metal can be welded or patched if necessary, while it is often easier simply to replace damaged plastic sections. If there is sagging, you may need to add extra supporting brackets to create a good slope. Prevention is better than cure, however, so clear gutters, downpipes and gullies regularly, especially after the leaves have fallen in the autumn, and keep an eye out for birds building nests.

Redecorate metal rainwater goods when necessary, so they do not corrode.

WHILE THE SUN SHINES date, so you can keep a track on where it is going and how fast. The Building Research Establishment suggests that cracks that measure less than 5mm wide, and do not grow any larger, will generally not affect structural integrity and can simply be redecorated. If you have any concerns, contact a structural engineer for a professional assessment.

Doors and windows Is there flaking paint on timber doors and windows? Wait for the wood to dry out, then redecorate as soon as possible. If there is rot, fill carefully or else cut out the whole section out and replace like for like. You can overhaul sash windows relatively easily, by re-aligning, replacing cords and adjusting the weights; you can even add brushes so they are soundproof and don’t rattle. Metal windows can rust, in which case they should be cleaned and, if necessary, repaired and re-squared. Try planing and/or sanding sticking wooden doors and windows, and check that locks and hinges are doing their job properly.

Oil them every now and then to keep them in tip top condition.

Walls Damp in walls might be caused by the ground level outside being higher than inside. If it is a simple case of build-up, dig back to the correct level. Should problems persist, digging down further and laying a gravel path will create a breathing space for the wall. If exterior render has ‘blown’ due to hairline cracks allowing moisture behind it, carefully remove the loose, hollow or cracked section, leave the wall behind to dry out and re-render appropriately. Keep an eye on mortar– if it has weathered to the same depth as the joint width, or is very loose, it’s time to re-point, matching existing pointing in material and finish. As for a crack in a wall, everyone’s biggest fear, it may not be as scary as you think. Cracks can be caused by many things, most of them nothing to worry about. When you first spot a crack, mark the end of it with a pencil or take a photo and note the

Astronomy

A HOBBY THAT’S (LITERALLY) OUT OF THIS WORLD different types of telescope before deciding on which type to purchase. The spectacular appearance of the Perseid meteor shower, every year in high summer, is an event that demonstrates just how exciting watching the night sky can be.

The Perseid shower is a stream of space dust and particles that flows behind the rather unromantically named Swift-Tuttle comet. It forms a glittering procession of meteors - up to 60 per hour - coming from the direction of the constellation of Perseus in the northern hemisphere. Under the right weather conditions, and especially in the hours before dawn, this glorious phenomenon can be easily viewed with the naked eye.

Make the effort to get up early to watch this natural light show and you’ll have a good introduction to astronomy. Studying the stars and planets can be an incredibly rewarding hobby, whether you are a beginner, observing with the naked eye, or a techlover equipped with a substantial telescope and accessories such as a CCD (charge-coupled device) camera for capturing those night-sky panoramas.

It’s one of the few hobbies where amateurs can even contribute to scientific research, simply by observing and recording what they see. One example is the American “Target Asteroids!”

Project, which was designed to collect information about asteroids approaching the earth.

First steps As an amateur astronomer you’ll need to become thoroughly familiar with the night sky: understanding how it changes, not just throughout the hours of a single night, but season by season, and even when viewed from different latitudes. A monthly sky guide can help you learn about the changes to look out for, or alternatively you might prefer to visit a planetarium, where you can lean back and view the complex movements of the heavens from the comfort of a padded chair!

Most beginners will be tempted to buy a telescope, but remember if you live in an urban area where there is light pollution it’s unlikely you will get a clear view of the night sky, however powerful your telescope may be. The size and quality of the lens is important, but be warned: many of the instruments sold by non-specialist shops are simply not up to the job.

Jodrell Bank has published a page of advice on its website (www.jb.man.ac.uk), advising beginners to join a local astronomical society in order to experiment with

The views of space you can expect with a standard telescope may not match those Hubble shots but with a little effort you should be able to see the rich detail on the Moon’s surface, the rings of Saturn and the planet Jupiter’s surface contours, together with its four larger moons. Once you become more familiar with the night sky you may also be able to locate and view galaxies and star clusters with your telescope.

Learning about astronomy There are many online sources of information, books and software packages to help you get to grips with this vast subject: a list of publications is available from the Royal Astronomical Society’s website (www.ras.org.uk).

If you want to make a serious study of astronomy, there are a number of distance learning courses that you can choose from. The Open University offers a certificate in “Astronomy and Planetary Science”, which provides a basic introduction that can be studied in separate modules: see the OU website at www.open.ac.uk for more information and costs. Alternatively Liverpool John Moores University offers short courses for under £200 (see www.astronomy.ac.uk).

Joining the astro community Astronomy is fun, but it can be even more enjoyable when you link up with others. At your local astronomy club you’ll find like-minded people keen to share their knowledge with you. By joining a club you’ll have opportunities to try out new equipment, learn new skills and techniques and make friends who share your passion for the night sky.

The British Astronomical Association has supported amateur astrologers since 1890 and on their website (www.britastro.org) you can chat to other enthusiasts via BAA’s online forums or find out about meetings and events taking place all over the country.

Astronomy Clubs UK (www.astronomyclubs.co.uk) is also a fantastic resource where you can search for a local club, find blogs and podcasts or search out places to visit.

Astrobiology Astronomy isn’t a static subject – it’s constantly growing and changing in response to new discoveries and new scientific directions. One of the most recent branches of astronomy is ‘Astrobiology’, a brand new field of science that covers the origins and limits of life of earth and asks where life might exist beyond the earth.

Whether you’re interested in how the universe was formed, the movements of the planets or the prospect of meeting an alien life form, astronomy is a fascinating and far-ranging topic. It’s a hobby that’s literally out of this world, and there’s no better place to start than in your own (suitably dark) back yard.

Secure Your Apprenticeship County Training, part of Shropshire Council is running a series of information and advice events for young people and their parents and carers to promote the benefits of vocational training.

OCTOBER 2015 EVENTS

County Training also offer the pre-apprenticeship programme ‘Advance’ which has been designed for those individuals not yet ready for an apprenticeship or college.

Parents and carers are welcome to attend the events to find out about the range of apprenticeships, work and training opportunities available for their sons and daughters. Starting to consider personal aims and aspirations at an early stage can increase confidence and understanding of the next steps among those attending.

Potential apprentices, living in Shropshire, are encouraged to book early for the events, to avoid disappointment.

WWI Ancestry Many people know their immediate family history, but what if there was help available to dig a bit deeper?

Who would want to trace back their ancestors from WWI and find out more about them?

Communities, Regeneration and Transport, said: “I’m sure there are many people out there who would like to learn more about their family history but don’t know where to start.

“With so much information now available online there has never been a better time to begin.

Drop-in sessions are held at Southwater Library every Thursday from 10.30am12.30pm. Volunteers are always on hand to help people starting tracing their WWI ancestors using free library resources such as Ancestry and British Newspaper archive.

There are also some WWI ancestry taster sessions being held throughout the next few months. These sessions provide an introduction to searching and using the military records on Ancestry to get people started on their own family’s WW1 history.

Sessions will be taking place at Newport, Wellington and Southwater Libraries.

Notes from your local Muxton Councillor Planning Round Up: The last major public consultation on the draft local plan has ended, with the final version being published at the end of the year. There was also a public exhibition at St. Johns Church to outline the proposed development site H1 for 750 houses which covers both sides of the A518 from Wellington Road to behind Wyevale Garden Centre, a planning application is expected before Christmas.

There is also a proposal for houses between the ASDA roundabout and Marshbrook Way, due to the ground conditions it may be some time before they are built.
