Graceful monolith , free standing sculpture, twisted and curved, physical interactive experience, art object

Made of 2" steel slabs 10' wide and 67' tall, twisted, curved, and assembled with a 10' opening on top, the total weight is 230 tons. It's a sculpture that can be interacted with, you can slip into the 20-by-21-foot space at its base via two openings, and as you look up at the sky through the 10-foot-wide aperture, you feel as if youre at the bottom of a very deep well. Brief for Sculptural LED Installation at Nanyang Technological University

• The permanent installation is intended to be a focal point within the university that showcases a vision that is inclusive of the artistic, engineering and design strengths of Nanyang Technical University (NTU); • The installation is placed in a much trafficked area that is close to the powers that administrate the university. Therefore chosen as a major site, the work must have flexibility to display design works made by students, be easy to update with new material and be easy to maintain; • Showcase artworks done by students; • Be easy to update with new works made on a semester as well as a more frequent basis as required; • Easy to maintain and if needed, repair; • We suggest using a flexible OLED form to create multiple sculptural shapes that form a sculptural obelisk. This obelisk will have an ability to reconfigure to form multiple predesigned shapes that inform the space in multiple ways.

Video Art Installation Background

Nam June Paik 1988 Dadaikseon (The More the Better) Video installation, Seoul, South Korea

• The 22.8 meter-tall conical work Dadaikseon, meaning "the more, the better,' by the word-renowned video artist Paik Nam-june, stands in the center of a spiral ramp under a glass-domed ceiling. It catches visitors "eyes as soon as they enter the museum lobby. Paik made it with 1,003 TV monitors, the number symbolizing October 3rd, Korea's National Foundation Day. As viewers ascend the spiral ramp, entire images kaleidoscopically changing on those monitors gradually come into view. The combination of the natural light projected through the dome and the powerful electronic light emitting from the thousand plus monitors seems to reenact the story of when daylight was first created.

Nam June Paik (July 20, 1932 – January 29, 2006) was a Korean American artist. He worked with a variety of media and is considered to be the founder of video art.[1][2] He is credited with an early usage (1974) of the term "electronic super highway" in application to telecommunications.[3]

Bill Viola, The Crossing, 1996

• Two-channel work The Crossing, which revolves around a freestanding, double-sided projection screen.

• On one side, a man walks in slow motion out of the blackness to eventually confront the viewer at over lifesize. Dripping water from above gradually becomes a torrent, overwhelming the figure, whose form is eradicated. The scene replays after the water dissipates.

• On the reverse side, the same man approaches, this time to be consumed by rising flames. Part violent destruction, part peaceful transcendence, The Crossing is indicative of Viola's use of nonspecific spiritual processes drawn from a host of disparate belief systems.

Bill Viola (born 1951) is a contemporary video artist whose artistic expression depends upon electronic, sound, and image technology in New Media.[1] His works focus on the ideas behind fundamental human experiences such as birth, death and aspects of consciousness.[2]
