@inoxford

Welcome to Living in Oxford Welcome to the December edition of Living in Oxford. In this issue of Living in Oxford Magazine – our last produced at our offices in Headington before we move to our new premises in North Oxford – we welcome The Oxford Clothing Company who introduce the Ox beanie! With more products to come in the New Year, take a look at Ed’s website, oxclothing.co.uk, to get your hands on one of his fantastic beanies for Christmas. We recap on The 2016 Oxfordshire Restaurant Awards where a great night was had by all, especially The Baskerville in Henley which walked away with the top prize of Oxfordshire Restaurant of the Year! Hedges Law, our fantastic main sponsors of the Awards, also feature in this edition of Living in Oxford Magazine as they welcome Roy Magara and Carl Selby to their growing ranks. It wouldn’t be Christmas without a ‘bah humbug’ story and for that I’ve included a recap of my visit to The Pointer in Brill. Living in Oxford Magazine likes to feature all that is good about Oxfordshire – and there’s plenty of it – but we will also, increasingly, be bringing you tales of instances where we haven’t had the sort of experience we would expect…..for us and for our readers. Oxfordshire businesses….you have been warned! We have also included a page of our loyal customer logos on page 5…please be sure to use these businesses and all of the other businesses listed or featured (positively) in this and every issue of Living in Oxford Magazine. Merry Christmas to all of our readers and we look forward to seeing you in 2017. Richard Rosser Editor, Living In Oxford Magazine

Lead Article:

The Oxford Clothing Company Ltd I would like to introduce you to The Oxford Clothing Company and give you a taste of what you can expect from us now and in the future. Ox Clothing, for short, is a unisex brand with no age limit….. everyone is welcome! We purposefully designed our logo in this specific shade of Polyneon pink because we thought it was the perfect colour to signify a unisex brand. With pink products now proving to be sell out items for large, successful brands, it’s no secret that pink is a clothing colour favourite for women AND men! I have always wanted to start my own business since I started studying Business Studies in my GCSE year, then later going on to study L3 Business at The City of Oxford College. Whilst at college I also did a course at The Saïd Business School called ‘How to Start a Business’ which gave me fantastic tips on starting and running my own business. With both my grandfather (Colin) and Dad (Richard) both successful businessmen in their own right, I suppose I was always destined to run my own business, so I’ve started early. I’ve always been interested in fashion, so it was inevitable that I would start a business in the fashion sector. Our website will grow over the next few months and if you want to get hold of one of our Ox Beanies for a Christmas present for someone special, why not log on today? The Ox Beanie is 100% designed and produced in the UK and that is what we will continue to do with all of our products in the future. The pink logo, in the centre of the black beanie, will be common to all of our products included in The Original collection. You will see ‘The Original Collection’ develop into an outstanding, eyecatching collection of ‘must have’ products until you are rocking the full fit. You can keep up to date with Ox Clothing developments with our releases via social media on Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat. However, if you want to be the first to know when our product is available, then you can sign up to our e-newsletter on our website – www.oxclothing.co.uk. We look forward to welcoming you as a customer. - Ed Rosser, Founder, The Oxford Clothing Company Facebook: oxclo | Instagram: oxclothingcompany | Snapchat: oxclothing

Restaurant Review:

The Pointed Bill at The Pointer at Brill

Written by Richard Rosser

Having secured 2nd spot in The 2016 Oxfordshire Restaurant Awards category for Best Brasserie / Gastro, we thought we would pop over on a Friday to see if The Pointer came up to scratch. Unfortunately, we were severely let down. At £135 for two with just two g and t’s and a glass of wine, no dessert and no service charge, that’s a heck of a bill! So why so much? We both went for the Terrine of Autumn Game which was pleasant but not outstanding and at £13 it should have been more memorable. Two g and t’s (£9 each) and a medium glass of wine (£10) added to our bill. I couldn’t tell you what the wine was because the website only carries the bottle prices – funny that because as soon as the gentleman who showed us to our table realised we weren’t in the market for a bottle, we didn’t see him again! Maybe this was also why we waited half an hour to give our order! Tina ordered the steak, one of the ‘specials’. No indication of price on a board or by the waitress. I ordered the Monkfish complete with mussels which I don’t care for and which weren’t mentioned on the menu. Were they added to the plate to bulk up the paltry monkfish portion? Underwhelming to be honest – very little taste for a fish which is normally succulent and tasty. That’s an aside. My real issue was the steak. It was supposed to be a small steak but no indication of the price - £51! I paid the bill but told our waitress how she should have made the cost clear to me when we ordered the steak – after all, steak and chips on the main menu was £30, so what was the justification for an extra £21? To the restaurant’s credit I was called on the Saturday morning as it had filtered through from the waitress that I wasn’t happy. The gentleman who called me explained that he couldn’t speak to me on the night – not that I was expecting him to – because he was ‘dealing’ with another table. Seriously! I left our table and went to the loo and there was a good five minutes between me leaving the table and leaving the restaurant. I was told that the restaurant doesn’t like to have dissatisfied customers but he worded the issue as though it could have been my fault or the restaurant’s – he wasn’t taking ownership of the fact that the waitress didn’t alert me to the cost of the steak. Had it been made clear that the steak could have fed two people and cost £51 then I would have cancelled the monkfish and joined my wife with the steak…it was more than adequate for two people. The gentleman who called said he didn’t want me to be unhappy and offered me a free meal for the next time we came in. I didn’t want to sound too ungrateful and waited for the voucher to come just to give the restaurant an ‘out’. I was told the voucher would be sent later on the Saturday and if not Saturday, ‘definitely Sunday’. Monday came and still no voucher. What’s the point of offering something as a ‘sorry’ when you don’t follow through? I’ll happily pay for good food, good service and an honest experience but everything about The Pointer smacks of a restaurant with a good reputation trying to cash in. Over-priced and overrated. www.livinginoxford.com
