A TOUR OF OXFORD If you want to discover the wealth of sights that Oxford has to offer, let a famous City Sightseeing tour bus be your guide! Reviewed by Alice Salive and Ambre Poibeau Students at Audencia Business School, France

We started our day at Oxford Train Station, where you can easily pick up your City Sightseeing tickets for the bus tour. You can choose between a 24 hour ticket or a 48 hour one. The 24 hour ticket is sufficient to discover the main sights of Oxford, but the 48 hour ticket gives you the possibility to go back and revisit places you perhaps wanted to see a little more of. The tour will take you one hour but you can stop wherever you want to and hop back on without having to wait more than 15-20 minutes at each stop. Your ticket will allow you to catch the red or green bus and they are easily identifiable because they don’t have any roofs! So checking the weather forecast before you hop on the tour might be a good idea. On top of that, you have the possibility to combine your ticket with Oxford Castle & Prison, Carfax Tower and Oxford walking tour tickets to create a full day of sightseeing. Along with our tickets we were also given a map and some headphones, so you can listen to a live guide during the tour who explains the different stories and provides interesting anecdotes about Oxford life. There are eleven languages available, so everyone can enjoy! Moreover, there are some commentaries tailored towards kids so that children can also enjoy the tour. On top of that, there is also wheelchair access on all tour buses. Everyone is welcome, from all walks of life. Now, let’s talk about the tour itself: You can jump on at 20 bus stops all around the city, but we started right from the beginning at the Park Street

This area has a lot to offer in terms of food, so perhaps you can grab a bite for lunch before you hop on, and the tour guide will explain a bit of history about this area too. Back in the bus, don’t miss the chance to hop off at the New Road stop to explore Oxford Castle & Prison (a fascinating tour of the old castle and its history as a prison) and visit the gift shop. The castle is an unmissable destination for anyone visiting Oxford. After that, you will be able to go to the new Westgate Shopping Centre, which will allow you to shop in more than seventy stores, with plenty to eat and drink along the way. We have been shopping there and it is very pleasant to walk around the place, which is covered and very modern and clean. Moreover, there is a gorgeous city view at the top of the building. The next stop sees you visiting Christ Church, one of the oldest and most recognized colleges of the University of Oxford. If you are a Harry Potter fan, you have to visit it - numerous scenes were filmed there! Christ Church is a very relaxing place. You can walk around the beautiful college grounds, all the way down to the river front to watch the boats drifting past. Nearby, you can also find Alice’s Shop, a little shop where you can be immersed into the Lewis Caroll universe. Your experience could continue by visiting the Covered Market, which is

in the middle of the city and where you’ll find local crafts, food and drink. Afterwards, get a brief respite from the busy city by visiting the Botanic Garden, which is the oldest in England. The next step of your journey will be to listen to the guide who will regale you with stories about the University Science Area and University Parks. Our favorite discovery has been the Sheldonian Theatre and Bodleian Library. This area contains a lot of splendid buildings that you can stop to visit, including the Bridge of Sighs where graduating University of Oxford students famously toss their caps into the air. After that, the bus will drive you outside of the city center where you can observe the historic architecture of local houses. Otherwise, if you prefer to warm up a bit, you can have a tea and some snacks at the Macdonald Randolph Hotel. In front of the hotel, you’ll find the Ashmolean Museum, which has world-famous collections ranging from Ancient Egyptian mummies to modern art. So there you have it - A bus tour is perfect for family and friends of all ages, and we think it is the best way to discover Oxford and its secrets.

ASHMOLEAN MUSEUM Ashmolean Museum is an extremely diverse museum, covering a huge range of eras, cultures and countries. We visited the Ashmolean Museum on a Thursday afternoon... Reviewed by Alice Salive & Ambre Poibeau

We visited the Ashmolean Museum on a Thursday afternoon in February. It’s the University of Oxford’s Museum of Art and Archaeology and contains a world-famous collection of objects from all across the globe. We were well-received by the lovely Lizzy Rowe, our personal tour guide for the next 45 minutes. She talked us through a wide variety of paintings, statues, objects and sculptures of different periods. It was fascinating to discover all these works of art, especially with our guide bringing these masterpieces to life. It was the case for the painting Ennui by Walter Sickert - the painting did not really interest us at first, but once our guide started explaining the history and thought process behind it we really began to get a sense of purpose and found ourselves captivated by it. Also, the painting called The Hunt in the Forest surprised us because it’s a geometric work of art which represents people and animals, definitely not something you see every day. We couldn’t possibly describe all the amazing works of art available to view at the Ashmolean Museum, so we highly suggest you go and check it out for yourself! You won’t be sorry. You Were Never Really Here ‘You Were Never Really Here’ follows a brutal enforcer named Joe as he sets out to rescue a teenage girl – an ambitious politician’s daughter – from human traffickers. And as he attempts to bring the girl home, an overwhelming storm of violence begins.

Peter Rabbit eter Rabbit, the mischievous and adventurous hero who has captivated generations of readers, now takes on the starring role of his own irreverent, contemporary comedy with attitude. In the film, Peter’s feud with Mr. McGregor escalates to greater heights than ever before as they rival for the affections of the warmhearted animal lover who lives next door

Tomb Raider Lara Croft is the fiercely independent daughter of an eccentric adventurer who vanished when she was scarcely a teen. Now a young woman of 21 without any real focus or purpose, Lara navigates the chaotic streets of trendy East London as a bike courier, barely making the rent, and takes college courses, rarely making it to class.

Pacific Rim: Uprising Jake Pentecost, son of Stacker Pentecost, reunites with Mako Mori to lead a new generation of Jaeger pilots, including rival Lambert and 15-year-old hacker Amara, against a new Kaiju threat. In March 2018, John Boyega (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) leads the cast of ‘Pacific Rim: Uprising’, the follow-up to 2013’s cinematic epic of monsters and mechs.

Ready Player One The film is set in 2045, with the world on the brink of chaos and collapse. But the people have found salvation in the OASIS, an expansive virtual reality universe created by the brilliant and eccentric James Halliday. When Halliday dies, he leaves his immense fortune to the first person to find a digital Easter egg he has hidden somewhere in the OASIS.

Blockers When Lisa, Hunter and Mitchell discover that their daughters have made a pact to lose their virginity on prom night, they decide to become ‘Blockers’ and try to stop them. A ROOM WITH A RIVERSIDE VIEW Does Oxford finish at the Railway Station? Go west a short distance and you will find The River Hotel...

Does Oxford finish at the Railway Station? Go west a short distance and you will find The River Hotel overlooking the River Thames and Osney Island conservation area beside Osney Bridge, just a short stroll away from the City Centre. The hotel building is owned by an Oxford University college, built in the 1870s and lived in by the Master-builder Mayor of Oxford, Thomas Kingerlee. It was formerly known as The Bridge House Hotel in the 1930s (when it boasted having “refrigeration”) and cost the equivalent of just £1.75 for a night’s B&B! The hotel was later known as Ehrsam Hotel, and finally The River Hotel. It is run traditionally and, to quote a recent guest from New York, is “quintessentially Oxford”. All bedrooms offer their own bath, shower and toilet, the usual in-room expectations of Freeview TV, clock / radio, hair-dryer, and a kettle for tea and coffee. There is also free Wi-Fi and ample car parking on site for residents. The room rate includes table service breakfast overlooking the Thames, cooked to order with a generous buffet to start. Since 2007 ‘Visit England’ has awarded the hotel “**Metro Grading”. With good facilities, great rates, and a perfect location for dining out in the City (the Thames path being right on the doorstep), it’s all about Location, Location, Location! 17 Botley road, Oxford, OX2 0AA 01865 243475 www.riverhotel.co.uk

TEA AT MACDONALD RANDOLPH HOTEL Enjoy a delicious afternoon tea in a luxurious place. Reviewed by Alice Salive & Ambre Poibeau

If you want to have a delicious afternoon tea in a luxurious place, the Macdonald Randolph Hotel is what you’re looking for. We had the chance to experience the afternoon tea selection at this famous hotel, and it was a true pleasure. The décor is absolutely gorgeous, with huge chandeliers and historic paintings. We were sat in an enormous leather sofa which was extremely comfortable. The place was very cosy and, at the same time, very regal and sophisticated. Moreover the waiters were extremely kind. They brought us a Chocolate Tea and a Darjeeling Tea with some British snacks: Scones with marmalade, different sandwiches with ham, salmon, eggs & cucumber, cream puffs, panna cotta, carrot and chocolate cake and other mini-pastries on a beautiful silver tray. The tea was absolutely wonderful, and the snacks were wonderfully soft and tasty. A visit to this hotel is a must with this beauty and comfort, and it’s the perfect opportunity to experience a real English Tea! PIERRE VICTOIRE We had the wonderful opportunity to visit Pierre Victoire on Little Clarendon Street for lunch and were not disappointed by its truly authentic French cuisine. Reviewed by Alice Salive & Ambre Poibeau

We were received by a friendly French waiter - as French girls ourselves it was a pleasure for us to chat with another French speaker. The decoration was traditional with lovely wooden tables, roses in vases and French songs like Edith Piaf and Patrick Bruel creating a lovely relaxed atmosphere. To start we chose Soupe du Jour; a mushroom, potato and red pepper soup and Pâté de Volaille; a chicken liver parfait with garlic toasted baguette and red onion marmalade. They were both very well presented and extremely tasty. For the main course, we chose a Saumon with an excellent sauce, and Steak-Frites which was both succulent and tender. Finally, for our desserts we picked a Vanilla Panna Cotta with a Winterberry Compote, which was truly delightful. We also had the Mousse au Chocolat which as we say in France was “exquis”. We will definitely go back to dine again at Pierre Victoire Bistrot. The prices were reasonable and it was a delicious and authentic meal. 9 Little Clarendon St, Oxford, OX1 2HP 01865 316616 www.pierrevictoire.co.uk

ESTATE AGENTS BRECKON & BRECKON As one of Oxfordshire’s largest and most successful independent Estate Agents Breckon & Breckon are rewriting the book on marketing property.

The property market has changed dramatically in recent years and Estate Agents need to react quickly to keep their heads above water. The days of turning up to a valuation with a small digital camera and producing particulars on the office inkjet have come to an end. Properties need to be expertly marketed to capture the attention. Imagery is everything, it affects sales brochures, newspaper advertising and perhaps more importantly everything online. An agent will often only have a split second before a potential buyer/renter clicks, swipes or scrolls on to the next property. Back in 2010 Breckon took a leap of faith and employed their own professional photographer Can Sengunes. They were the first agent in Oxford to make such a commitment and thus began Breckon’s evolution into a modern media savvy estate agent, with a clear vision on how they wanted their brand positioned and a commitment to ensure their client’s properties outshone the competition. In 2015 Keith and Greg decided to take the next step and hired Nick Mawley as their Creative Director. Nick came from a background of marketing and design with a large London based developer. Initially he set to work consolidating the brand and bringing the team up to speed on new marketing methods, providing them with a suite of materials they could tailor and use when needed. Sales particulars went from a folded A3 card to glossy tri-fold brochures.

“OVER THE LAST 5 YEARS BRECKON HAVE MOVED THEIR BRAND AND MARKETING ACTIVITIES FORWARD SIGNIFICANTLY WITH LARGE INVESTMENTS FROM KEITH & GREG.” Nick continues to push the brand forward, constantly looking at Breckon’s customer journey and how their experience can be improved. He also runs the social media, PR and advertising operations. From winning national awards through to redesigning ad spaces online and in print he ensures everything that has the ‘Breckon Blue’ on it looks exceptional. Charlie Landells was hired in late 2017 to take on a new role as Digital Media Manager. With Breckon’s ever expanding New Homes portfolio and a Lettings divison keen to connect with a younger demographic the team really needed something exciting to compliment it’s existing marketing arsenal. Charlie has been instrumental in pushing Breckon & Breckon’s social media activity forward creating engaging, informative and entertaining videos that ensure their followers are constantly clicking the ‘like button’. From its initial inception back in 2010 Breckon’s multi-faceted and dynamic Creative Department have really thrown down the gauntlet to other Estate Agents both locally and nationally. Their team can design, produce and deliver marketing collateral to rival any Creative Agency. 294 Banbury Road, Oxford, OX2 7ED 01865 310300 Sales 01865 201111 Letting www.breckon.co.uk
