MARSHALL AREA FINE ARTS COUNCIL ARTS CENTER MAFAC is dedicated to presenting art exhibitions and performances, promoting local artistic talents, and providing educational experiences. The MAFAC Arts Center rotates art exhibits every six to eight weeks, featuring local talent. Books are available written by area authors through its read local program, Books on Third.

A Little Night Music are free concerts by regional performers at Liberty Park in the summer. The performance committee offers a concert series where the community can appreciate international talent at an affordable price.

The Arts Center hours are Tuesday through Friday from 12:00 - 5:30 pm.

LYON COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY MUSEUM

MARSHALL AQUATIC CENTER/ BOARDS & BLADES SKATE PARK

The Lyon County Historical Society (LCHS) is a nonprofit, member-supported organization located in downtown Marshall.

Marshall Aquatic Center (MAC) features a 190-foot water slide and three pools.

The MAC features youth and family nights along with open swimming and is available for private party rentals. The MAC opens in June and closes in August.

The Lyon County Museum has semipermanent and rotating exhibits on themes related to Lyon County history.

Current exhibits include: Life on the Prairie, Schwan’s Ice Cream Shop, Where We Shopped and What We Wore: Retail in Lyon County, Schools of Lyon County, Lyon County Courthouse, Veterans’ Honor Wall, and the Heritage Room. Our new second floor exhibit gallery, “Making Lyon County Home,” is opening in 2020.

We serve Schwan’s ice cream sundaes, floats, and cones in the museum’s ice cream shop.

MARSHALL-LYON COUNTY LIBRARY With locations in Marshall, Balaton, and Cottonwood, as well as outreach service throughout Lyon County, your Marshall-Lyon County Library provides education and entertainment for all ages!

Your MLCL card gives you free access to books, magazines, audio books, music CDs, movies, cake pans, digital collections, and online services. MARSHALL GOLF CLUB The Marshall Golf Club, is a par 72, 18hole course, featuring more than 6,600 yards. The Redwood River runs through the front and back nine. The Pro Shop is fully equipped, and our PGA Pro offers individual lessons as well as group lessons and instructional clinics for golfers of any age.

Days and evenings are filled with livestock judging and demonstrations, a variety of music on our free stage, a midway with rides, games and food along with the Ralco Enrichment Center. Explore displays featuring 4-H, FFA, and Open Class members.

Grandstand events include the PRCA Rodeo on Thursday and Friday (Tough Enough to Wear Pink Event) and the Demolition Derby on Saturday.

SOUNDS OF SUMMER August 21-23 | Marshall Community family fun celebration – musical entertainment, food, grand parade, outdoor concert.

The 11th annual Sounds of Summer in Marshall will be August 21-23 and includes the grand parade at 4 p.m. on Saturday. An annual highlight of the weekend incorporates Southwest Minnesota State University’s annual Smokefest competition, a Minnesota State Championship Event sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbecue Society.

Other activities taking place downtown include a burger feed, food vendors, inflatables and train rides for children. Free outdoor musical entertainment is ongoing throughout the weekend.

Sunday’s events include a community worship service at 10 a.m. in Liberty Park and a splash party from 1 - 3 p.m. at the Marshall Aquatic Center.

Located in a beautiful wooded valley of the Redwood River, Camden State Park is an ever-changing experience.

Southwest Minnesota’s largest lake: swim at the beach, launch your boat from the boat landing, or rent one of the park’s rowboats, canoes, paddleboats, kayaks, or stand-up paddleboards. Experience the hiking trails and exploring Loon Island, biking the sixmile loop of the Casey Jones State Trail, geocaching, and fishing. A lakeside campground, campsites equipped with full hookups for RVs and camper cabins make for great overnight stays.

Located along Highway 59 thirteen miles south of Marshall, Garvin Park provides 748 acres of outdoor recreation for all ages.

Enjoy picnicking, hiking trails, cross country skiing, horse trails, snowmobile trails, warming house, playground equipment and softball field, lookout tower, hunting (turkey and deer archery during permitted seasons).

Woodlands dominate this park, creating spectacular fall colors. Sun-drenched prairies come alive with flowers in the spring.

Winter offers tranquility and cross-country skiing. Hike the Dakota Valley Trail to the lookout for an amazing view. Cool off in the spring-fed pool. Gain a whole new perspective of the park while canoeing Brawner Lake. Fish for brown trout in the Redwood River. Camp amidst the beauty.

The Camden Regional Trail provides over 14 miles of off-road, paved, multi-use and multi-season use. The trail provides users with opportunities to experience a natural setting, where wildlife, historical sites, prairie landscapes, and winding rivers are part of the overall experience.

TWIN LAKES PARK Twin Lakes Park is a newly created park between East and West Twin Lake. It is located in the southwestern corner of Lyon County in Shelburne Township, south of Florence. The park is made up of 61.8 acres.

Twin Lakes County Park offers a campground with 15 sites including electricity.

Garvin Park is named after H.C. Garvin, a retired Winona businessman.

Park facilities include four campgrounds and 47 electrical campsites at $15/ night. A dump station is available. One tent campground with eight non-electrical sites are just $10/night.

CITY OF MARSHALL

Downtown Marshall Marshall is a regional center for economic, educational, social, cultural, and health services in Southwest Minnesota. As a regional center of activity, the City of Marshall provides public infrastructure and services for community sustainability and growth.

The City of Marshall was incorporated in 1901 and operates under a Home Rule Charter adopted in 1969.

The City of Marshall has an elected mayor and six council members, who serve four-year terms. The Mayor and Council appoint 13 active citizen advisory boards and commissions that assist with legislative oversight of municipal operations. The City also employs approximately 99 fulltime and 97 regular part-time and paidon-call positions.

The total city operating budget for 2020 is $12,881,437. The City of Marshall also operates a storm water utility, sanitary sewer utility, regional airport, municipal retail off-sale liquor operation, and regional public safety training center.

Component governmental units commissioned by the City, but operated independently, include the Marshall Municipal Utilities, overseeing municipal water and electric services, the Marshall/ Lyon County Library, and the Marshall Public Housing Commission.

Marshall’s City Hall is temporarily located on the SMSU campus while undergoing renovations at 344 West Main Street, with business hours from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The Marshall City Council is responsible for the overseeing of business of city government. The Council meets the second and fourth Tuesday of the month at 5:30 p.m. at the Marshall Middle School. LYON COUNTY The population of Lyon County as of the 2010 census is 25,857 and consists of 11 municipalities. Lyon County has 460,000 acres in 710 square miles and has two county parks: Garvin Park and Twin Lakes Park. Marshall is the county seat and largest community and economic center in Lyon County. Other towns in Lyon County are Cottonwood, Tracy, Minneota, Balaton, Ghent, Lynd, Russell, Taunton, Green Valley, Amiret, Garvin, and Florence.

Lyon County is governed by five county commissioners elected to four-year terms. Current commissioners include: Charles Sanow (District 1), Steve Ritter (District 2), Paul Graupmann (District 3), Gary Crowley (District 4), and Rick Anderson (District 5).

The Government Center is open from 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. and houses the county administrator, assessor, attorney, veterans services, recorder, auditor/treasurer, Southwest Health & Human Services, Minnesota Workforce Center, and courtrooms for the Fifth District Court system. The Law Enforcement Center is attached and houses county deputies and the sheriff, the county jail, and city police and public safety entities. The Public Works building is located at the Lyon County fairgrounds and is the home of the engineering, parks, and environmental offices.

THE MERIT CENTER The Minnesota Emergency Response Industrial Training (MERIT) Center offers a professional training development facility that serves as the region’s main provider of high-quality training of law enforcement, public safety, and industry training.

The recently expanded facility and vehicle training center features state-of-the-art classrooms, a driving course with skid pad, driving/shooting training simulators, public driving education as well as fire and wind training props. ADULT BASIC EDUCATION The Marshall ABE is a free program investing in adults to assist them in gaining the skills needed to succeed in today’s world and obtain meaningful employment.

MARSHALL HISTORY 1870-2020

Marshall Main Street in the 1910s.

Marshall’s first settlers arrived in June of 1869, when a group of three men and one woman traveled to western Minnesota in search of new land for development.

The group, who arrived in covered wagons, included C.H. Whitney and C.H. Upton, who located claims on the present site of downtown Marshall.

In 1870 Whitney established a post office in Marshall and became postmaster.

Mrs. C.H. Whitney was given the honor of naming the community. She chose the name to honor Minnesota Governor William Rainery Marshall, a two-term governor who served from 1866 to 1870.

Marshall succeeded over the neighboring

community of Lynd as the county seat due to its location and new rail line. The arrival of the Great Northern Railroad in 1888 provided Marshall with Crossroad status, thus greatly increasing its ability to succeed as a community.

By the end of World War II, the community began a phase of rapid expansion. The city’s first and most dramatic success in the field of food processing was by Louis Weiner and sons with their company Marshall Foods. The Weiner Family Corporation included nine separate production units and were the first company in the U.S. to discover how to dry eggs, for which they received a government contract to ship dry eggs to Europe and Japan

during WWII. However, the largest impact on the community started when Paul Schwan built his own dairy plant on West College Drive together with his wife and sons Marvin and Robert in 1948. Four years later, Schwan’s Dairy and home delivery was founded.

Southwest Minnesota State University (SMSU) was founded when the Minnesota University System chose Marshall as the location for the newest college.

Construction began in the late 1960s, and the first graduation took place in the spring of 1972. Since that time, SMSU has impacted the community and area development.

SMSU: DISCOVER. ENGAGE. LEAD. SMSU is a place where students can discover their academic interests, engage the university and greater Marshall communities, and find plenty of opportunities to lead. It has been an important part of the fabric of southwest Minnesota since it opened in 1967.

The university offers 50 majors as well as pre-professional programs, twoyear AA degrees, master’s degrees and distance learning opportunities.

Agricultural Education is the newest ag-related major and joins five others in the School of Agriculture. An RN to BSN nursing program is available, and the Exercise Science degree can now be obtained at a trio of Twin Cities community colleges — Normandale, Alexander-Ramsey and North Hennepin Community Colleges. The university offers the only Culinology degree in the U.S., which is now delivered at St. Paul College, too. The Honors Program allows top high school students to design their own major course of study.

Many new initiatives have begun under the leadership of President Kumara Jayasuriya, including increasing the number of degrees offered completely online to 10; forming a club hockey team; adding a shooting sports club to extracurricular offerings; forming an Esports team within Athletics; and offering scholarship initiatives that will hopefully keep the best and brightest students in southwest Minnesota, attending SMSU. SMSU has an annual economic impact of $173 million in the region. The university supports and sustains 1,421 jobs.

SMSU has been recognized for its affordability, quality, and lifetime return on investment. Out-of-state students pay the same tuition as in-state students.

Conference Center The Conference Center at SMSU is one of the most versatile spaces in Marshall, annually hosting meetings, conferences, banquets, and other special events.

It is Marshall’s premiere wedding reception venue and includes a 10,000 square-foot upper ballroom level as well as a 7,000 square-foot lower ballroom level. It can be configured in many ways to accommodate small gatherings or large.

Alumni SMSU has 22,599 alumni. Of those, 14,616 live in Minnesota, 2,111 live in Lyon County, and 1,423 live in Marshall.

Ninety-nine percent of recent graduates are employed, and 95 percent of those found jobs in their field of study.

COMMUNITY TRANSIT Community Transit of United Community Action Partnership provides public transportation to serve the needs of everyone in the Marshall community. Public transit buses are lift accessible and offer curb-tocurb or door-to-door service throughout Marshall and Lyon County. Two routes, which operate on a pre-set schedule, are also available within the City of Marshall.

Community Transit also operates in Cottonwood, Jackson, Lincoln, Murray, Pipestone, Redwood, and Rock counties.

SOUTHWEST MINNESOTA REGIONAL AIRPORT MARSHALL: RYAN FIELD Marshall’s award-winning airport is located in Marshall on West Highway 19. The airport is an all-weather instrument landing facility.

Two paved and lighted runways can service almost any size general and corporate air craft.

A beautiful arrival/departure building provides ample lobby space, a pilot’s lounge, and flight planning room.

In addition to bus operations, registered volunteers provide rides to out-of-town locations or when buses are not available.
