Extreme poverty is defined by the World Bank as a family living on less than $1.90 a day. These families experience chronic hunger and malnutrition, struggle for accommodation and essential services like clean water, and lack access to sanitation and health care. Porridge and Rice supports education to break the cycle of poverty. The charity adopts a holistic, human-rightsbased approach dealing with issues as wide ranging as new classrooms to Female Genital Mutilation. The charity offers opportunities for volunteers to engage in real community projects as electives, unpaid internships, or summer projects. Volunteers can engage in a wide range of activities from design & construction to data collection for health monitoring. The charity currently supports around 2200 pupils which is expected to grow by 500 to 1000 each year. It spends over 98% of funds raised in Nairobi.
