Een eeuw geleden publiceerde Filippo Marinetti zijn veelbesproken ‘Futuristisch Manifest’, waarin hij het enthousiasme beschreef dat gepaard ging met de opkomst van de moderne industriële ritmes, voortgestuwd door een ongebreideld geloof in snelheid en vooruitgang. Recent heeft mediafilosoof Franco Berardi een upgrade van die tekst verspreid, waarin hij afrekent met de eenzijdige interpretaties van de moderne snelheidscultuur en een vurig pleidooi houdt voor meer reflectie en autonomie. “De alomtegenwoordige en eeuwige snelheid”, schrijft hij, “ligt reeds achter ons, op het Internet, zodat we nu op zoek kunnen gaan naar ons eigen ritme”.
One century ago Filippo Marinetti published his controversial ‘Futurist Manifesto’, in which he described the enthusiasm brought about by the arrival of modern industrial rhythms, driven by a total belief in speed and progress. In his recent “upgrade” of the Manifest, media philosopher Franco Berardi rejects unilateral interpretations of modern speed culture, making a plea for more reflection and autonomy. “The omnipresent and eternal speed”, he writes “is already behind us, in the Internet, so we can find our own singular rhythm”.
Onze maatschappij wordt nog steeds gedreven door een onverzadigbare honger naar snelheid, maar de voorbije decennia hebben de revolutie van informatie- en communicatietechnologieën en de uitdijende globalisering onmiskenbaar geleid tot een nieuwe temporele dynamiek, waarbij het belang van connectiviteit en flexibiliteit steeds groter is geworden. Het regime van kloktijd heeft plaatsgemaakt voor een complex weefsel van uiteenlopende ritmes, cycli en tempo’s, die de temporele verbeelding prikkelen als nooit tevoren. Onder de titel “Accelerated Living” werpt het Impakt Festival 2009 een blik op de veranderende noties van tijd en snelheid. Gespreid over vijf dagen komen tal van kunstenaars, filmmakers, muzikanten en denkers aan bod die elk vanuit hun eigen invalshoek reflecteren op de constructie en de intensificatie van tijd en de invloed daarvan op onze perceptie van de realiteit, en van onszelf. De resulterende zoektocht naar een nieuw engagement met tijd wordt belicht in een reeks filmvoorstellingen, lezingen, performances en een tentoonstelling.

Het werk van mediakunstenaar Thomas Köner laat zich niet onder een enkele noemer vatten. Hij was jarenlang actief als geluidstechnicus, voor hij in de jaren ‘90 met het project Porter Ricks furore maakte in het Europese technolandschap. In filmmaker Jurgen Reble vond hij dan weer een geschikte partner om zijn interesse in de symbiose van visuele en auditieve ervaringen uit te puren. Die verschillende invloedsferen
komen samen in het recente werk van Köner. Naar aanleiding van het festivalthema “Accelerated Living” en de eeuwviering van het ‘Futuristisch Manifest’ heeft hij voor Impakt een “opera digitale” gecomponeerd, die wordt opgevoerd met een geprepareerde piano, een digitaal aangestuurd “noise orchestra” en een zangeres. Het sonisch bezinksel van 100 jaar industrialisatie en acceleratie wordt gecondenseerd in een multidimensionale audiovisuele ruimte, waarin beeld en geluid interageren alsof “tijd en ruimte gisteren zijn gestorven.” Een Impakt productie The work of media artist Thomas Köner cannot be easily categorised. For years he was active as a sound engineer, before his project Porter Ricks caused a stir in the European techno landscape. In filmmaker Jurgen Reble he found the perfect collaborator to pursue his interest in the symbiosis of visual and auditive experiences. All these different influences come together in Köner’s recent work. At the occasion of the festival theme of “Accelerated Living” and the hundredth anniversary of the Futurist Manifest, he has composed an “opera digitale” for Impakt, which will be performed with a prepared piano, a digital ”noise orchestra” and a singer. The sonic sediments of one hundred years of industrialisation and acceleration will be condensed in a multidimensional audiovisual space, where image and sound interact as if “time and space died yesterday”. Our society is still driven by an insatiable hunger for speed, but during the past decades, the spread of globalisation and the revolution of information and communication technologies have unmistakably led to a new temporal dynamics, emphasizing the increasing importance of connectivity and flexibility. The tyranny of clock time has given way to a complex web of diverging rhythms, cycles and tempos, which stimulate the temporal imagination as never before. Under the title “Accelerated Living”, the Impakt Festival 2009 focuses on changing notions of time and speed today. During a period of five days, a number of artists, filmmakers, musicians and thinkers will share their views on the construction and intensification of time, and its influence on our perception of reality, and by extension thereof, of ourselves. The resulting search for a new engagement with time will be explored in a range of screenings, lectures, performances and an exhibition.
