UNIT 2: Performing arts LEARNING AIMS After completing this unit, you should be able to do the following: • Warm up by doing movements to music. • Develop and play creative games. • Read and interpret the basic notes. • Combine rhythmic patterns with movement activities. • Identify the different percussion instruments. INTRODUCTION In the Dramatic Arts we use our bodies, musical instruments and voices in different ways to tell stories and to play! In this unit, we are going to have fun singing, dancing and playing. IMPORTANT TERMINOLOGY • • • • • • • • • •

Rhythm: A repetitive pattern of rhythm or movement. Rhythmic patterns: Successive repetitive notes. Polyrhythm: Two or more rhythms in the same piece of music. Notation: The way in which we write music. Props: Objects used in a performance. Rehearsal: Practising for a performance. Performance: The presentation of a show . String instruments: The sound of these instruments originate from vibrating strings, such as the violin. Wind instruments: The sound of these instruments are produced by blowing on them, such as the flute. Percussion instruments: The sound of these instruments are produce by beating them, for example drums.
