Many Latin American Christian organizations stood their ground for the defense of family and life during the 49th Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS), which was held in Medellin, Colombia, from June 27 to June 28, 2019.

Five coalitions organized by the Ibero-American Congress for Life and Family, as well as other pro-life and pro-family groups, highlighted the importance of respecting every person’s life and showed their rejection of gender ideology.

“We must acknowledge that some elements of education are the essential and exclusive responsibility of parents. It is them that have the duty and right to educate their children in values, as stated by various international regulations. This right and duty cannot be assigned to any institution. Schools should stop being a battlefield between family and the State,” said Patricia Cortés, representative of the Coalition for Education and Culture.

She suggested to reinforce the provision of Article 26.3 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which states: “Parents have a prior right to choose the kind of education that shall be given to their children.” Milagros Jáuregui de Aguayo, representative of the Coalition for the Progress of Society, made an important intervention by denouncing the lack of interest of governments to preserve nuclear families, which are

formed by a man and a woman.

“This is a historical opportunity to give fundamental solutions to the decay of natural families in our continent, which we consider is the main cause of social division in our territory,” asserted the representative. She also added that, “Crime, addictions, poverty, and many other social problems can be prevented thanks to strong, nuclear families. Latin America loves family.” Silvana Vidal, from the Coalition for the Freedom of Conscience and Expression, prompted OAS to protect children’s identity. “When we protect the family, we promote progress and a good future. There is no progress with broken families or children who doubt their own identity,” stated Vidal.

She also demanded OAS to stop perverting the Spanish language by promoting the so-called “inclusive” language to favor one group of interest because it violates the rules of the Royal Spanish Academy and overlooks the principle of fairness that should be observed by the institution.

For the third year in a row, on February 23, such delegations gathered in Panama to sign a statement to reinforce their stance in favor of family and against gender ideology. At the end of the event, the main representatives of the Coalitions held a meeting to schedule next year’s Ibero-American Congress for Life and Family, which will take place in Lima, Peru.
