As the site is located in Kerala, the house will not experience harsh sunlight, so the openings are provided on all sides except for the south, so that maximum amount of daylight can flood in and also to make sure that artificial light is not required.

THE SHADED SLOPE

The house is located in Munnar, Kerala. It is a weekend getaway on top of a hill where the temperature during the day varies from 20ºC to 32ºC. The house is designed for a couple. It is divided into two stories where the living room is on the ground floor and the bed-room underground. The total area of the house is 35sq.m.

There are different techniques used to light up the house naturally like the clerestory window which provides the reflected light into the space, also the use of sloped roof in the living room and the bedroom with the skylight to get in more direct light into the space and lit it up naturally. The use of Zenith lighting is also done to get in natural light from the skylight provided which lights up the bedroom underground.

The sloping roof skylight of living room and the skylight for the bedroom gets in natural light from the East. The clerestory window of the living room gets in light from the West and the sloping roof skylight of bedroom gets in light from the North.
