Our Mission...
Every Child Makes Good Progress
October 2016 | Issue 1
Dear Parents & Carers, I am delighted for you to receive the first newsletter of the year where I am sure you will find lots of useful information relating to life in the Academy and for each specific year group. I would first of all like to introduce and new school App and encourage all parents and carers to download the App, free of charge to their smart phone / device. This App gives you an up to date insight into what is recorded on our school system in relation to your child. Therefore you are able to monitor their attendance and punctuality, behaviour and rewards and progress. You are also able to engage in dialogue with the Academy through this system. I have always believed that the relationship between home and school is the greatest influence on how well students do in school and with this technology there is a real opportunity to ensure that parents are well informed. This in turn will prompt parents to engage with us where necessary and ensure that we have an active feedback loop to support your child to do the best that they can. Please do ensure you have access and if you need any support in getting yourself set up, please contact us. Further information is available in this newsletter. The correlation between attendance and progress in school is absolute. What parents don’t always understand however is the threshold for what would be described as good attendance and the point at which progress very quickly drops away. Nationally, this decline in pupil performance starts to happen when attendance drops below 95% and completely drops away by the time attendance drops below 90%. It is critical therefore that we are proactive in doing all that is possible to ensure every pupil has ‘good’ attendance. So far this term, our whole school attendance is just above the national average at 96%. This is a great start, however we must sustain this through the winter months. Please support us by ensuring your child is in school unless it is absolutely necessary. For Year 11 parents, I would like to emphasise the importance of ensuring your son/daughter is studying at home in the evenings, weekends and holidays and also that they are attending after school intervention classes and completing all homework. To let them off the hook is not helping them particularly when they are competing with every young person nationally, it is an expected standard in schools up and down the country for year 11’s to be staying behind on most evenings and attending on non-school days. This is what it takes to be successful and to meet the ever challenging demands of modern examinations. We need your help, it is in the best interest of your child so as to secure those ‘life-changing’ grades. Enjoy half term... Mr Rowlands Executive Principal
