DECEMBER–JANUARY

The Hope of Christmas Amidst the Chaos of Everyday Life

In December, the church hall at Immanuel Church will be adorned with a beautiful nativity scene. A nativity scene may appear idyllic, featuring the newborn child, Mary and Joseph, the shepherds, and the animals. However, it was probably anything but idyllic over 2,000 years ago when God’s son was born into the world. Not many people would choose to give birth to their child

on a dirt floor in a filthy stable after a long and exhausting journey. Yet that is how it happened when God’s son entered the world. At the same time, this very scenario tells us something: We have a God who is not afraid of what is messy, chaotic, or dirty. God’s son is not born in a palace, not among heroes, and not into a happy, harmonious family. Rather, he is born in an ordinary, dirty stable, to

a young mother who must have felt that life was quite chaotic at that moment.

What does this say about God? Well, it shows us that amidst the simple, the everyday, and even in the dirt – that is where the miracle happens. That is where God is.

God does not shy away from our lives, even if they may feel far from perfect. To us, who are far from ideal people, God comes. To us, the angel’s voice resounds: A Savior is born for you! There is much darkness in our time. In our world, but perhaps also in our own lives.

In the midst of this, we can place our hope in the words of John 1:5: The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

If there is anything that this season needs, it is hope. The innermost essence

of hope is trust. For me, it is about putting my trust in the fact that there is someone who, despite everything, holds this world, you, and me in their hands. Someone who once came as a vulnerable child and who meets us in what is our lives, often beyond our images and ideas.

Welcome to celebrate Advent and Christmas at Immanuel Church.

Christmas in Community

Hello Frida Fritzon, deacon at Immanuel Church and coordinator for Christmas in Community!

What is Christmas in Community?

Christmas in Community is Stockholm’s largest Christmas celebration open to everyone. It offers Christmas food, music, worship, and, above all, a focus on community. Christmas in Community is celebrated in several churches in Stockholm in collaboration with the organisation Ny Gemenskap (New Community). At Immanuel Church, we celebrate Christmas in Community on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and Boxing Day.

Who is welcome to Christmas in Community?

Everyone is welcome! Some people think it’s a Christmas celebration for those facing hardship, but people from all walks of life attend. Yes, we have people who are homeless or otherwise vulnerable, but we also welcome those who have no one to celebrate with and those who simply choose this celebration over another.

How many people usually attend?

We usually welcome around 450–500 guests per day, with approximately 90 volunteers each day.

How can people support this wonderful and important celebration?

You can become a volunteer. Applications can be made through Volontärbyrån; volontarbyran.org/org/jul-i-gemenskap-immanuelskyrkan. You’re also welcome to support financially if you’re able.

What would you say to someone considering becoming a volunteer?

Volunteering is incredibly rewarding. And we

have a lot of fun, both within the team and with our guests. Some volunteers have been part of it for fifteen years. That says something. Helping others makes you feel good, but I often hear from volunteers that the conversations and encounters they experience are gifts in themselves. To use a church phrase, I believe you feel blessed when you contribute to building a warmer community.

Do you have a favourite memory from Christmas in Community?

I have two! One is the sense of community among the volunteers and those of us working with Christmas in Community. One year, at a quarter past seven in the morning, we were peeling and cutting egg halves, laughing and having a wonderful time.

Another favourite memory is of a teenage girl who hadn’t expected to receive a Christmas gift and was surprised and overjoyed when she received an H&M gift card. We always have a Santa on Christmas Eve, with a selection of presents to hand out. We try to find out the names and preferences of the children and teenagers so we can pick gifts that suit them. The look on this girl’s face when her name was called was priceless. By scanning the QR code next to this, you can send a donation via Swish to support the work of Christmas in Community!

CONTACT WITH DEACON OR PRIEST

For many, but not for everyone, Christmas is eagerly awaited, and even though we wish for a peaceful Christmas, things can happen that create a need to talk to someone from the church.

We would like to remind you that every day, year-round, between 10 am and 7 pm, you can get in touch with the serving pastor or deacon by phone: 08-587 503 65. If we cannot answer directly, feel free to leave a message, and we will call you back. We also remind you that through 112, you can contact a duty priest during the night (9 pm - 6 am).

Newly composed music for worship, mass, devotion, meditation, and retreat. Experience a completely new musical treasure that unites biblical texts and prayers with the creativity of young people.

Songs from Immanuel has been created in close collaboration with theologians, where youth have had the opportunity to delve into and interpret the texts in their own way. This music is not just an artistic experience – it is also an invitation to community, reflection, and faith.

The music will be available on streaming services like Spotify and more platforms. Printed copies will be available for purchase at cost price.
