A symbol of peace, strength and devotion, our statue of Mary stands at the heart of Immaculate’s campus and serves as a daily reminder of our Catholic values. Her gentle yet powerful presence inspires students to lead with compassion, seek truth and grow in faith. As our community pursues excellence in academics, service and character, Mary remains a steadfast guide—encouraging us to live with purpose and love. Our statue was dedicated on May 31, 1968 by Bishop Walter W. Curtis at a ceremony in which faculty, clergy and students took part.

LETTER FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

We are encouraged by the growing interest in an Immaculate High School education. It’s a testament to the distinctive experience we provide, nurturing the whole student–spirit, mind and body.
- Wendy M. Neil, Head of School
My first full year as Immaculate’s Head of School has been an exciting one!
One of the highlights of our year was the beautiful Eucharistic Procession we hosted in October. Our Chaplain Father Phan carried the Eucharist into Immaculate surrounded by students. It was a poignant reminder of the true presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist—and, as Bishop Caggiano told students, an invitation to answer Jesus’ call.
As we seek to develop the whole student–physically, emotionally, academically and spiritually–we are grateful that more and more families are expressing their interest in an Immaculate High School education. More than 120 new Mustangs are enrolling for the 20252026 school year!
We are grateful for all the hard work by our faculty and staff who helped Immaculate earn a repeat A+ grade from Niche rankings, putting us in the top 2.5 percent of high schools in our country. Immaculate is once again the #1 Catholic Co-Ed Day School in Connecticut and the #4 Catholic High School in the state, ranked #14 Best for Athletes out of 248 schools in Connecticut.
We take pride in our constant commitment to innovate and provide the best education possible–and, to that end, we upgraded our Certified Nursing Assistant laboratory to better support our nursing students. A Foundations in Education Innovation and Leadership Grant for a medical mannequin was a welcome addition to this.
I am also thrilled to announce a new project in the works: a Business Innovation Center at Immaculate. We envision this as a place that supports our students’ growing interest in business and finance with cutting edge technology. I believe we can create something truly special here that will further differentiate us from other schools. Contact me to be a part and offer your business expertise! Thank you for all your continued support.
With gratitude,

Wendy M. Neil Head of School
Immaculate Choir Makes Headlines in Ireland

“Céad míle fáilte” means a hundred thousand welcomes in Irish–and that’s exactly what greeted Immaculate High School’s Inspire Choir on their recent trip to Ireland!
“We were blown away by the authentic Irish welcome,” said Fine Arts Department Chair Jen Doherty. “We received a tea reception, biscuits and friendship wherever we went and the students loved it!”
The group embarked on their journey to the Emerald Isle in February to share their music and experience Irish culture. Immaculate’s choir stayed in Dublin and first visited the St. Michael’s National School in Rathmoloyon, where they made fast friends with students and did some singing plus dancing. Then the American students joined the regular choir at St. Coca’s church in Kilcock for Mass.
“We were blown away by the authentic Irish welcome,” said Fine Arts Department Chair Jen Doherty. “We received a tea reception, biscuits and friendship wherever we went and the students loved it!”
Immaculate’s Mustangs also got to visit a local museum, castle, scenic landscapes and quaint shops along the way–plus sampled Irish cuisine. They even sang to calm cows during a milking at a dairy farm.
“The most memorable moment of our trip to Ireland was our visit to the Irish school where we sang with the children and connected over our differing cultures,” said junior Sophia Majoros of Danbury. “We were able to learn about Irish culture directly from people who live there and we got to share about our lives in the United States.”
The Inspire Choir’s trip made the front page of the local “Liffey Champion” newspaper, and included a two-page spread of photos inside with the headline, “US choir visits St. Coca’s Church in Kilcock.” The visit had a profound effect on Irish students–and the school’s principal too.

BISHOP CAGGIANO LEADS EUCHARISTIC PROCESSION AT IMMACULATE
It was a beautiful day filled with ceremony, tradition and reverence.
Immaculate students, faculty and staff, plus members of the community, lined the school’s entrance for a Eucharistic Procession on October 31, 2024. The Eucharist was carried under a beautiful canopy by Immaculate’s Chaplain Father Philip Phan, who was surrounded by students, as the crowd processed inside the school.
The Most Reverend Frank J. Caggiano, Bishop of Bridgeport, spoke at the school’s Eucharistic Adoration service held in the gymnasium. The ceremony marked Catholics’ belief that Jesus is truly present–body, blood, soul and divinity–in the Eucharist and was a time for the whole school community to honor and adore Him. The event was part of the Bridgeport Diocese’s 2024 Greater Danbury Eucharistic Procession.

STUDENTS PRAY STATIONS OF THE CROSS IN MUSTANG VALLEY
The sunshine warmed students as they prayed a very special outdoor Stations of the Cross in Mustang Valley this year. Chaplain Father Phan led the observance, assisted by Campus Ministry students.
He reflected on the importance of this process in his Lenten Reflection letter. “As I walk the path of the Stations of the Cross with our students, I see in each station a mirror reflecting my own journey through life alongside Jesus,” Father Phan wrote. “Each step I take, each station I meditate upon, brings me closer to understanding the depth of His love and sacrifice for me.”
Juniors and seniors prayed their own Stations of the Cross in the gymnasium during flex period. The ritual is a traditional devotion, especially during Lent, that commemorates the final hours of Jesus Christ’s life and encourages participants to contemplate their participation in the sin that makes the crucifixion necessary and the great love of God in redeeming us through His own sacrifice.
“You
have been blessed because you have been chosen to be among those who inherit eternal life,” Bishop Caggiano said and urged students to answer Jesus’ call.
“What does he ask? He asks a lot, my friends…
He wants you to be free. Not free from law and discipline, but free in your hearts.”

FATHER PHAN has officially become a United States citizen! This is a proud and joyful milestone, and we couldn’t be happier for him.
“Becoming a U.S. citizen was deeply emotional for me—it marked the end of my18-year immigration journey. It was a moment filled with gratitude, joy and a quiet sense of arrival. Standing in that room with people from so many different backgrounds reminded me of the beauty of this country: unity in diversity. It was a day I’ll never forget.”
-Father Phan
TEACHER OF THE YEAR!

The Diocese of Bridgeport Office of the School Superintendent named Jen Doherty as its 2025 St. Elizabeth Ann Seton High School Teacher of the Year. This award recognizes a teacher who demonstrates a passion for teaching, a deep commitment to their faith and a loving dedication to their students and school communities.
Jen arrived at Immaculate five years ago bringing her many talents, enthusiasm and joy to the music program and in the process uplifted her students. By letting them lead where they had expertise and bringing their talents out of the classroom and into the community at places like nursing homes, senior centers, veterans events - and the world in venues such as Radio City Music Hall, Carnegie Hall and Ireland—they learned that each of them mattered and had authentic contributions to make to our world.
RETIREMENT:

She brought the same gifts to teaching theology and mentoring Campus Ministry. With the students and our school Chaplain she planned activities for the different liturgical seasons and many community service projects. Again, she encouraged students to be leaders in these endeavors. Her philosophy that we are here to grow the students in faith, personal capability and love informed her approach. She taught and modeled the practice of “but first, pray,” i.e. listen to what God is asking of us and then serve with love.
Among her many roles at Immaculate, she has taught music and theology, directed the school’s Inspire Choir, led morning rosary in the Chapel, was music director for the school’s spring musicals and was a caring and supportive colleague. During the 2024-2025 school year she served as chair of the Fine Arts Department and faculty moderator of Campus Ministry.
“Words cannot convey all the enthusiasm, faith and inspiration Jen Doherty has brought to our Immaculate community over the years,” said Head of School Wendy Neil. “We have often wondered where she gets her energy! She is truly a role model for our Mustangs who has left an indelible mark.”
Doherty is characteristically humble about her contributions to so many lives. “All for the greater glory of God!” she said after learning about her award. “Our work is not for our own benefit. Every one of us, in our own way, uses our God-given talents for the greater good of our students!” She is taking a sabbatical this coming year to take care of her aging parents but many at Immaculate know this break will not keep her away from our school. Doherty has already promised to visit often and stay in touch with students, serving as a Fine Arts Advisor.
KRISTINA KULIKAUSKAS
After the pandemic rendered the continuation of her 20-year career at another educational institution uncertain, Kristina Kulikauskas began to look for new opportunities and found her place at Immaculate High School as Assistant to the Dean of Counseling. Five rewarding years have passed since she joined the counseling team and she is now ready to retire.
During her time with us she has supported students with warmth and kindness, helping them navigate scheduling, college applications and everyday challenges. She assisted with
the changeover from a paper-based program to an electronic one in the Counseling Office.
Her fondest memories of Immaculate involve the times she saw students who had struggled with something, overcome it and “gain their wings, ready to soar into a bright future.”
In retirement she will be enjoying time with extended family, especially grandchildren, traveling and taking advantage of the varied activities available in her new home state, North Carolina. Whether beachcombing, hiking, taking a class at NC state or flying to Switzerland, Kristina Kulikauskas is looking forward to an exciting next chapter in her and her husband’s lives!
Her parting message to students (and everyone),
“If you can be anything, be kind.”
MUSTANGS Outside the Classroom

Sophomore Steps Up to Empower Adults With Disabilities
Every year, the Ridgefield based organization Sphere CT enriches the lives of adults with disabilities through education, recreation and the arts. The Sphere Performing Arts Program rehearses all year to put on a production at the Ridgefield Playhouse— always a touching show that brings tears to the eyes of audience members.
This past year, Immaculate sophomore Max Nadoraski ‘26 played a key role in helping the actors learn their lines, practice their dances and gave them pep talks before heading out on stage to perform West Side Story in September. You could often see him high-fiving participants and cheering them on at rehearsals.
“I was so proud of how hard everyone worked and wowed the crowd with their acting, singing and dancing,” Max, who was also the show’s prop manager, said. “The best part is honestly all the amazing friendships I’ve made at Sphere!” He is already helping the program’s members learn lines, songs and choreography for their next production–The Lion King. Stay tuned!

Mustangs Make Breakfast Run to NYC!
It’s an early morning operation our Campus Ministry organizes that makes a big difference in the lives of unhoused people in New York City–called “The Breakfast Run”!
Students and parents gathered at the crack of dawn at our school to start cooking and prepping for their trip from Immaculate to Manhattan. They made sandwiches and breakfast food, packed brown bag lunches and drinks plus gathered socks and hoodies–transporting them all via cars to people who need them.
This year over two dozen Mustangs took part in this powerful display of community spirit. The best part for many students is chatting with recipients in New York who are incredibly grateful for the friendliness and help. It is a tremendous learning experience that reinforces Immaculate’s commitment to serving others.

Great Year for Our Mock Trial Team!
Immaculate’s Mock Trial Club is a great way to introduce Mustangs to our legal system and courtroom rules. In this program, students take on the roles of attorneys, witnesses and jurors, working together to prepare and present a fictional case. Every year, the Connecticut State Bar hosts a Mock Trial Competition in courtrooms across the state which includes 50 teams. Immaculate’s squad won the regional competition held in Danbury, becoming one of the 20 teams in the next round held in Bridgeport. The team advanced again to compete in the quarter final held in Middletown. In that round, Immaculate’s Mock Trial Team narrowly lost with one judge voting for them and two other judges voting for another school. “The team that defeated us, Sheehan High School in Wallingford, eventually went on to become the overall champion, so we do not feel too bad about losing to them,” said Faculty Moderator Christopher Houser. “I’m so proud of the way our Mock Trial students performed!”

The Geography Bee competition included teams from around the state like Newtown, Trumbull, Wethersfield, Ridgefield, Mercy and many more. Our upperclassmen team-Rafi Antonios ‘26, Jacob Saadi ‘26, Nick Ramirez ‘26 and Robert Pattison ‘27 -finished second overall. Our second team, which was composed entirely of freshman-Liam Kirkman, Alex Gardner and Tyler Braun-finished sixth overall which also put them near the top!

St. Thomas Aquinas Award
We are so proud of Isabella DiNatale ‘25 for receiving the St. Thomas Aquinas Award from the Diocese of Bridgeport!
This award is given to students who show excellence in academics and exemplify the Gospel values we are called to in our Catholic faith through service to others and Christ-like behavior. The honor is named after St. Thomas Aquinas, one of the most influential theologians in history. Aquinas dedicated his life to academics and practicing virtue. Pope Leo XIII named him the patron saint of Catholic universities, colleges, academies and schools around the globe.
DiNatale will be attending Northeastern University where she will study International Business.

Four Immaculate Teachers Awarded Foundations in Education Grants
Can high school students really build a fully functional computer? Yes!
One of Immaculate’s Foundations in Education Innovation and Leadership Grants is going to help students do just that. The school is proud to announce that four teachers received these prestigious grants this year. From a medical mannequin to sewing machines to student created computers, these awards will allow Mustangs to explore new areas and help others.
“Our goal is to stay on the cutting edge and always look for ways to innovate in our curriculum,” said Head of School
Wendy Neil. “Immaculate’s teachers do that consistently and I’m thrilled that they earned these esteemed grants.”
This year’s winning Immaculate grant proposals are:
• “Building the Basics: Student-Created Computers from Scratch”
- Mr. Anthony D’Ausilio ($5,278 award)
• “CNA Laboratory Medical Mannequin”
- Mrs. Marie Hatcher ($4,151 award)
• “Stitching Knowledge, One Thread at a Time!”
- Dr. Stephanie Rugg and Ms. Celeste Andrei ($1,134 award)
Father Augustine Nguyen of St. Francis of Assisi Parish, in collaboration with the office of Youth Ministry and Religious Education and the Women’s Guild, recently awarded Grace Cornell ‘26 the Spirit of St. Francis of Assisi recognition. It is given to a high school student who lives out the mission of St. Francis parish, “to know Jesus, and make Him known through outstanding service and dedication to the parish community.”
Three Immaculate Students Awarded Prestigious STEM Scholarships
Three Immaculate seniors received prestigious STEM scholarships from The Angeles T. Arredondo Foundation based in Stamford, Connecticut which are earmarked for their college education. Keira Licursi ‘25 of Cross River, NY was awarded a first prize of $50,000, Maris Chirayil ‘25 of Danbury earned a second prize of $25,000 and Kristina Asmani ‘25 of Norwalk received a third prize of $10,000.
Immaculate makes it an academic priority to offer students cutting edge STEM classes. To this end, the school provides various programs in science, technology, engineering and math. Candidates must take at least six advanced STEM courses in the first three years of high school with a minimum of one per year to be eligible for the scholarship.

IMMACULATE’S
ENGINEERS” COME IN SECOND PLACE NATIONALLY
BRAVE ENGINEERS

How do aircrafts safely deliver cargo to ground crews in a wildfire? Immaculate’s “Brave Engineers” team set out to tackle this question and won second place nationally for its answer!
The Immaculate squad used its knowledge in the areas of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) to win first place in the Real World Design Challenge State Competition for Connecticut for the seventh year in a row. It then went on to compete in the RWDC National/ International Competition May 3 where it earned second place honors.
This year, the state RWDC 2025 challenge was to design an uncrewed aircraft to support wildfire and logistics–in a fast, safe and efficient way. The “Brave Engineers”
solution to the challenge was the D-25 Pyrocarrier, an unmanned, semi-autonomous, locally remote-controlled helicopter that met all the criteria the RWDC Challenge provided and in several cases exceeded what was required.
“I am incredibly proud of our Brave Engineers for all their commitment and hard work,” said Jeanine Antonios, Immaculate’s Career and Technology Department Chairperson and the team’s coach. “They were able to apply what they’ve learned about innovation in their STEM classes here at Immaculate to solve a very real problem for emergency crews–and they had fun doing it!” Antonios also thanked Ruthanne Szumski from Pratt and Whitney Aircraft Engines who served as a mentor on this project.

Do not chase what you think is the “perfect career.”
That’s what Immaculate High School alumna Danielle Sekelsky from the Class of 2019 told students at their Career Day Friday, April 25. The Bethel native is a “WWE Superstar,” a television show produced by World Wrestling Entertainment. She is a former cheerleader at Immaculate, at Penn State University and for the NFL’s Tennessee Titans.
“When I was sitting where you are, I honestly had no idea what my path would look like and I still don’t some days,” Sekelsky told Mustangs as the keynote speaker of Career Day. “One of the most important things I’d like all of you to take away from today is that it is perfectly okay to not have it all figured out right now.”
A total of 16 speakers shared their careers and insights with students in Immaculate’s classrooms after an all school assembly. Among them were an in-flight paramedic, fashion design assistant, data scientist, product coordinator for the running shoe company HOKA, travel agency president, insurance data analyst, pastry chef, US Army therapist, retired teacher, chemist, nurse, attorney, finance VP and Superior Court Judge.
“We are so proud of all of our alumni’s accomplishments around the globe —and are incredibly grateful that they’re willing to share their experiences with our students,” said Jeannie Demko ‘88, Director of Alumni and Events. “We know that alumni, students and faculty look forward to Career Day every year!”
One of Danielle Sekelsky’s parting thoughts for students? Don’t take anything for granted.
“Hard work is non-negotiable,” she told them. “It sounds so simple, but it is true. Never be complacent. Success isn’t handed to you— it’s earned.”
Stay tuned to see this local grad on WWE and in “Legends and Future Greats” on A&E!

MUSTANGS GIVING BACK

Matthew’s Mission of Hope Lives On
Our entire Immaculate community was deeply saddened by the loss of one of our own–Matthew Hatcher from the Class of 2027. He passed away on July 5, 2025 from complications following a heart transplant.
“Matthew’s smile lit up our hallways at Immaculate and his generosity of spirit will be missed greatly,” said Head of School Wendy Neil. Matthew’s brother Ryan graduated this year and his brother Michael was in the Class of 2024. His mother, Marie Hatcher, is Immaculate’s beloved Certified Nursing Assistant Program instructor.
Mustangs regularly use their flex period to cut, sew, stuff and close heart pillows for Matthew’s Hearts of Hope–an organization founded by Matthew to help people and families affected by heart disease. The pillows go to babies, toddlers or children who undergo open heart surgery and offer comfort to patients after their operations.

Immaculate ASL Club’s annual Giving from the Heart tree is an initiative that demonstrates the club’s commitment to supporting the local community. By collecting baby items like diapers, wipes, formula and clothing, the club is directly helping pregnant women and new mothers in need. These essential items are distributed through Hopeline Pregnancy Resource Center, ensuring that they reach those who need them most during critical times.
We know that Matthew’s spirit will live on in this wonderful organization. If you would like to make a contribution in his memory, send it to Matthew’s Hearts of Hope, 1 Farm Rd., Sherman, CT 06784 or go to www.matthewsheartsofhope. org/donate

Did you know that every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs a blood transfusion? Our Student Council organized a blood drive in March. Students and faculty quickly signed up to help address the demand.
The
Our lady Mustang Volleyball Team presented a check to Regional Hospice for $550. The team raised the donation through recent bake sales. We are so proud of their hard work and dedication!

“YVC’s inaugural year at Immaculate was a great success! We are truly grateful for the support of Westchester Modular Homes in sponsoring the club this first year,” said Faculty Moderator Suzanne Curra. Fifty students participated in various service projects between September and May, collectively completing a total of 375 service hours. Members are eager to continue their service to IHS and its neighboring communities in the years to come and are looking forward to welcoming new YVC members in the fall! Some notable YVC events this year:

Youth

Youth Volunteer Corps members assisted UConn’s Office of Sustainability with their “Give & Go” program. They collected, sorted and organized unwanted items (clothing, furniture, household goods, toiletries, books, etc.) donated by students. The items were distributed to people in need by community partners. It was a rewarding day!
“I really enjoyed going to UConn and helping them with the Give & Go program. I think it’s really nice that they donate no longer needed items to those who need it instead of just throwing them out and creating more waste within the world. I also really liked how the organizer was very passionate about what she does. It made me realize that I would like to do more activities like that and everyone can make a difference if you really want to.”

Immaculate Youth Volunteer Corp members (with some help from Saint Gregory the Great School students) participated in Clean City Danbury Day by cleaning up Hatters Park.
Members of our Youth Volunteer Corp (YVC) spent a Saturday morning at Glen Hill in Danbury pampering residents with manicures and putting smiles on their faces!
IHS
Volunteer Corps spent three days with Jericho Partnership in Danbury preparing and distributing bags of food for local families to enjoy at Thanksgiving.
Congratulations! Congratulations!

Anything Goes!
In April Immaculate students had the opportunity to act, sing and dance in the classic Cole Porter musical Anything Goes! which originated in the early 1930s.
The story follows the antics of passengers on an ocean liner bound from New York to London. Aristocrats, gangsters, a nightclub singer, an ambitious mother, sailors and a stow-a-way each pursue their personal objectives that end up intersecting in comic encounters. Along the way romantic entanglements fraught with misgivings right themselves by way of madcap schemes and disguises.
The actors embodied their characters delightfully. The singing and dancing were awesome and spot on for the genre and era of the show. An amazing 12-minute ensemble tap dance scene left no doubt about the talent and dedication of all involved in the production.

Little Women
This year, Immaculate High School’s Drama Club presented Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women. This classic story of four sisters coming of age during the Civil War was adapted for the stage by IHS alumna Samantha Brown ’12. The show was beautifully staged under student director Spencer O’Rourke ’25 and new-to-Immaculate faculty advisor Michelle Baird.
Audiences got an intimate look at the relationships, challenges and opportunities in the March sisters’ lives as they grew from tweens to young women. Each sister was played by two actors—one for the young girl and one for the young woman, illustrating their growth as individuals. Along the way they faced poverty in their community, separation of family, illness and death as well as personal success, new relationships and the joy of caring for others.
Thoughtful adaptation, skillful direction and talented performances brought forth a lovely retelling of this beloved story.

Celebration of Arts
In May, our amazing graphic designers, musicians and artists lit up the stage at our annual Visual and Performing Arts Show! The event was a joyful celebration of creativity and passion, with everything from stunning sculptures and imaginative repurposed books to beautifully designed postcards and menus that left audiences in awe. Our Graphic Design 1 class used Adobe InDesign to craft eye-catching fliers in recognition of May as Mental Health Awareness Month—each one a vibrant blend of thoughtful design and heartfelt messaging. Their work sparked meaningful conversations and reminded us all of the power of visual storytelling. Meanwhile, our Visual Design (Quinnipiac University) class wowed attendees with original infographics created in Adobe Illustrator as part of their final project. Using research, creativity and advanced design techniques, they transformed important topics into engaging visual narratives. Students also brought new life to cardboard, wire and novels, turning everyday materials into extraordinary works of art. To top it all off, our choir students filled the evening with uplifting music, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere that made the night unforgettable.

THE CONNECTICUT ASSOCIATION OF SCHOOLS annually honors two outstanding seniors who excel in the fine arts. This year’s awardees were Olivia Chila ‘25 and Kiera Licursi ‘25.

BACK TO BACK eSPORTS STATE CHAMPIONS
Congratulations to our eSports team! For the second time in a row, Immaculate High School’s eSports Team took home the State Championship in Mario Kart! The competition took place at Quinnipiac University on May 6, where Immaculate’s “Mustang Yoshis” squad defeated the Sheehan Titans from Wallingford, CT.
“It was our second time winning the championship so it felt good,” said Eli Ribeiro of Danbury. “Even though eSports may not seem physical, it is just like any other sport because to win a competition we have to train and be better than the other teams.”
Gamers from high schools all over the state participated in the event, which included Rocket League, Mario Kart and Super Smash
Bros. Quinnipiac hosts the CIAC tournaments in cooperation with PlayVS, a competitive platform for eSports with a focus on school competitions. The National Education Association has reported “explosive growth” in eSports programs across the country over the past several years, with some colleges and universities awarding eSports scholarships.
“This team trains, practices and competes just like any other athletic team here at Immaculate,” said Athletic Director Nelson Mingachos. “We’re so proud of our eSports squad for bringing home another championship!”

THREE CHEERS FOR OUR CHEERLEADING TEAM!

Congrats to our Immaculate Cheerleading Team for an amazing performance at the SWC Championship. Our student-athletes worked nonstop through the fall and winter seasons, cheering on both our football and basketball teams at each and every game.
For the first time in IHS history, our Cheerleading Team placed in the top three at the New England Cheer and Dance Championships. We also pulled off a seventh place finish in our SWC conference, and a seventh place finish out of 24 teams in our class S state competition.
A huge congratulations to Cathryn Amos ‘26 for being selected as part of the All SWC Conference Team. Amos also competed in the Top Gun Tumbler division at three individual competitions and won first place at all three events.

“They performed exciting halftime routines that kept our fans wanting more” said Cheer Coaches Mykenzee Baierand and Nicole MacInnis. “They also worked endlessly to perfect their own competition routine, and consistently upped their difficulty each week. We are beyond excited for what the future holds and are already in full swing with our new season, preparing to accomplish even more this year!”
BRENAN MCCABE ‘26 RUNNING INTO HISTORY!

Brenan
McCabe ‘26 overcame many hurdles to have an outstanding year.
This speedy Mustang placed third at the New England Championships in the 300m, earning an All New England honor, his sophomore year. But this year, he was nursing a soccer injury and missed the entire indoor track season, as well as part of the outdoor track season. So McCabe was not able to really race until early May, after his first return to speed training in April.
“Some of those early races were tough too, since he was still just starting his season and getting in shape while everyone that he was racing was already in the middle of their season and running at their best. It must have been disheartening,” said Track Coach Christopher Houser. “Given all of that, it it was actually remarkable that he was able to bounce back.”
McCabe also competed at the State Open Championship in Track and Field in June–a level of competition where only the very best competitors from each class can compete. To qualify requires finishing in the top three at the State Championship or having one of the next ten fastest times out of the teams that did not finish top three.
He finished second overall in the 400m, qualifying him for the New England Championship and running the seventh best time in Connecticut State History. Needless to say, that also broke McCabe’s own previous school record! He went on to finish second overall in New England as well, and compete at the New Balance National Championships in Philadelphia. Immaculate’s boys 4x400m also qualified to run at the State Open, but they were unable to attend because there were two seniors on the team and the timing conflicted with graduation. McCabe ended up earning All Conference, All State and All New England honors.

CLASS OF 2025 ALL STATE

Every year, the Connecticut Association of Schools (CAS) and the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference (CIAC)’s hosts its Scholar Athlete awards banquet. This year, Immaculate alumna Nikki (Weiss) Conte ‘07 was selected as the keynote speaker for the forty-second annual event, held at the Aqua Turf in Southington this past May.
Conte was a four-time Class S state champion as the soccer goalkeeper for Immaculate. She was an All-American selection as a senior. Then, as a student at the University of Notre Dame, her teams reached the NCAA Final Four every year she was there. In 2010, as the starting goalkeeper, Conte played a pivotal role in Notre Dame’s national championship season. She was recognized on the Big East All-Academic Team in 2009 and 2010.
The scholar athlete program recognizes two seniors from each high school whose athletic and academic performance have been
exceptional, who demonstrate integrity and are models of self discipline and courage.

MUSTANGS MAKING THEIR MARK
From coast to coast—and around the globe—Immaculate High School alumni are making a big difference. Whether leading in business, innovating in science, creating in the arts or giving back in communities near and far, our graduates carry the values of faith, integrity and excellence they cultivated here at Immaculate. In this special centerfold, we celebrate the inspiring journeys of several Mustangs whose careers and locations are as diverse as they are impressive. Their stories are a testament to the enduring impact of an Immaculate education—and the limitless paths that begin in our classrooms.

Emma Connolly ‘18 - Portland, Oregon
If you’re wearing the trendy HOKA athletic shoes, there’s a chance this Immaculate alumna had a part in designing them. Emma Connolly ‘18 is a product coordinator at the company in Portland, Oregon. Where did her interest in this field begin? Right here at Immaculate!
“My involvement in athletics at Immaculate allowed me to discover a passion for footwear. I am forever grateful that my experiences there gave me the confidence to go pursue my dreams and ultimately move across the country solo for the adventure of a lifetime,” Connolly said. “My most special memories include traveling with my track and field teammates and coaches to so many incredible meets.”
After Immaculate, Connolly graduated from the University of Scranton with a Bachelor’s of Science in Kinesiology in 2022 and went on to get her Master’s of Science in Sports Product Management from the University of Oregon in 2024.
It’s no exaggeration to say she’s landed her dream job. “I get to play with shoes all day!” she said. Who can argue with that?

Abby Elliott ‘05 - Los Angeles, California
Abby Elliott ‘05 - Los Angeles, California
If you’ve caught the popular show The Bear on Hulu, did you realize the character Natalie “Sugar” Berzatto is played by Immaculate alumna Abby Elliott ‘05? She was nominated for a Golden Globe last year for the role.

From 2015-2017, she co-starred in the series Odd Mom Out on Bravo and starred in NBC’s Fran Drescher sitcom Indebted in 2020. Elliott also had a stint on Saturday Night Live and credits Immaculate for providing her with “a special community full of creativity.” As a Mustang, Elliott acted in school plays and musicals, attending college before leaving to pursue her acting career.
“IHS allowed me to explore my artistic side and have so much fun with my classmates at the same time. Mary Raymond ‘77 [former Immaculate Fine Arts Director] was a huge cheerleader for me and her encouragement allowed me to feel safe on stage,” Elliott said. “Immaculate gave me confidence and tools that I still carry with me. I am forever grateful for my time there and for the friends I made along the way.”
Elliott is seen here (right) attending her recent Immaculate Class of ‘05 reunion with friend and classmate Lauren Mackay (left).

Lori Novella-Murphy ‘89 - Danbury, Connecticut
Danielle Sekelsky ‘19Orlando, Florida

Danielle Sekelsky ‘19 - Orlando, Florida
She may go by “Dani Raye” as a WWE Superstar now but her classmates know her as Danielle Sekelsky ‘19, star cheerleader and serious student intent on studying business.
“When I was part of the cheerleading team at Immaculate, I learned that leadership is never about being the loudest voice in the room,” Sekelsky, who lives in Florida, told Mustangs as the keynote speaker at Career Day. “It’s about lifting others up, leading by example, and putting the team before yourself.”
She credited her education from Immaculate and Penn State, as well as her deep faith, for helping her take the leap from a secure job in real estate investing to her dream of wrestling. Sekelsky also worked as a cheerleader for the NFL’s Tennessee Titans.
“Chase what excites you,” Sekelsky said. “Chase what makes you excited to get out of bed every single morning and trust in your instincts and the Holy Spirit that the Lord instills in you to make these decisions, even if that means stepping out of your comfort zone.”
You can catch her demonstrating just that on WWE and in Legends and Future Greats on A&E!

Lori Novella-Murphy ‘89 - Danbury, Connecticut
It was a night she will never forget.
Immaculate alumna Lori Novella-Murphy remembers the school’s talent show her senior year as one that helped propel her career as a dancer and, ultimately, a business owner.
“I was so nervous to perform in front of the whole school. When I came out, before I even started, people were cheering my name, you could feel the overwhelming support,” she said. “When I finished, everyone was standing and yelling my name and cheering. It was a special moment. I felt so happy and accomplished.”

Novella-Murphy went on to attend the Katherine Gibbs Business school while furthering her dance career at Broadway Dance Center, Steps on Broadway and The Henry La Tang Dance School. She is now celebrating the 30th anniversary of her studio Lori’s Center Stage Dance Studio in Danbury. She is a certified teacher through Dance Educators of America and some of her theatre credits include Bye, Bye Birdie, 42nd Street, Mame and A Chorus Line.
Novella-Murphy’s oldest son Billy graduated from Immaculate in ‘22 and her twin boys Brendan and Logan Murphy will be sophomores this year.

Chris Hogan ‘90 - Zurich, Switzerland
Chris Hogan ‘90 enlisted in the Army right after graduation from Immaculate. Then, after basic training, he attended the Defense Language Institute in California, studying German and later Arabic. He entered the U.S. Army Reserve and attended Fordham University, before landing a job with a Big Four accounting firm in the international tax division. A few years later, he was transferred to KPMG’s London office where he spent 11 years–with the exception of one year when his Reserve unit was deployed to Afghanistan.
In 2016, he and his family moved to Switzerland where they still live. When he looks back on his time at Immaculate, Hogan said what stands out is the emphasis on service and “having a responsibility to something bigger than ourselves.” Plus, he remembers the school’s emphasis on academic rigor.
“My kids have gone to some great schools in Europe,” Hogan said. “They are getting a good education. But I always compare their experience to mine; I can tell you that the curriculum, standards of instruction and expectations at Immaculate compare favorably to high profile institutions that claim to offer a world class experience.”
Even while living overseas, Hogan has remained connected with our Immaculate community and takes pride in supporting his alma mater.
Dennis Fulling ‘83 - London, United Kingdom
Dennis Fulling ‘83 calls Immaculate his “rock”–a place that laid the foundation for who he became and his success in the world of finance.
Fulling manages a private equity firm with three partners based out of London, but he and his wife spend half of the year in Hilton Head, South Carolina. He credits former Immaculate principal and teacher Robert E. Gerwien, Sr. for setting the bar high.
“The decorum and the decency that Mr. Gerwien and his team demanded from us continue to inspire and guide me,” Fulling, who now serves on the school’s Board of Directors, said. “The people I met and the friendships developed then and remain today are unique and quite special.”
He attended Mount St. Mary’s University in Maryland where he received a bachelor’s degree in Accounting and a minor in Finance. Fulling traveled the word with college friends–from Beijing to Moscow to London–before getting a job at American Express and becoming a Certified Public Accountant. He later worked in Moscow and London before returning to Roxbury, CT for a time with his family.

The constant? His formative education at Immaculate. “IHS provided the foundation, the faith and the grit to help me face the challenges that life invariably throws your way,” Fulling said.

Monsignor Thomas W. Powers ‘83 - Rome, Italy

Monsignor Thomas W. Powers ‘83 - Rome, Italy

Monsignor Thomas W. Powers ‘83 has been leading the education and formation of men who are preparing for the priesthood as Rector of the Pontifical North American College in Rome since 2022.
“Immaculate provided me–and my three sisters!–with an excellent Christ-centered education,” Powers said. “Every teacher, in his or her own way, taught with the mind of the Church. That gave me great confidence to bring the Catholic faith into every aspect of my life.” While a Mustang, he played football and tennis, was engaged in several clubs and activities and served as Student Council president his senior year.
He graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a bachelor’s degree in Economics and a minor in Finance before working as a financial consultant. Powers spent a year volunteering in Puerto Rico in 1991, entered the Saint John Fisher Seminary in Trumbull in 1992 and earned a bachelor’s degree in Sacred Theology at the Pontifical North American College. He was ordained a Catholic priest for the Diocese of Bridgeport in 1997.
“I love being a priest, and now to prepare men for the priesthood is a great privilege and gift,” Powers said. “The best part of my ministry is seeing how the Holy Spirit is still acting in the world and how many people–especially young men and women–are responding to God’s call in their lives.”
Thank You!

Dear Mustang Family,
I am so thankful for all that Immaculate’s community achieves each year and it’s beyond a privilege to talk about it. Once again Immaculate achieved the highest rankings by Niche in Connecticut for Co-Ed Catholic Day Schools and retained a rating of A+.
These rankings are all encompassing and take a holistic approach to include many factors: academic programing, AP course offerings, outcomes, satisfaction, participation, safety, diversity and adherence to our mission. Plus they take into account the variety of athletic, artistic and social opportunities we offer at our school. There is much competition and where we rank year to year cannot be predicted but our goal is to remain at an A+! Amongst our local public schools, only Ridgefield has the coveted A+.
The recognition is the result of a total community effort. We are blessed with students who give their best effort every day. We have families that sacrifice so much to be here. Our committed staff puts in the extra time and effort that makes all the difference and as you can see in the pages of Traditions–where we have many generous donors who support our school and the Robert E. Gerwien Endowment. As we go to print, the endowment that started at zero just three years ago is now over $700 thousand. We aim to exceed $1 million in 2026. IHS enrollment for 2025-26 will hit 400 for the first time in half a decade. That’s something to be proud of!
I am thrilled for where Immaculate stands today after over 60 years. Wendy Neil and her team are best in class. So to our school leadership, teachers, students, families and fellow Board members I remain full of gratitude and so privileged to be a part of Immaculate High School. Thank you.
Warmest regards,
Joseph T. Draper ‘82 Board Chairperson

FROM MUSTANG TO MEDALIST: SPENCER BROWN’S WORLD STAGE WIN
Spencer Brown ‘19 was a star on Immaculate’s Track Team – and now he’s making a name for himself on the international stage!
The Croatian hurdler took home the gold in the Croatian National Championships in 60m hurdles with a time of 7.81 seconds this past February in Zagreb.
Brown was a multiple record holder during his time at Immaculate, before heading off to Mount St. Mary’s University, where he earned two Northeast Conference All-Rookie Team honors. He then took his talent to Tennessee and Ole Miss where he was a hurdler and long jumper.
He is now a graduate student at the University of Minnesota competing for its track and field team.
“Immaculate helped shape me into the person and the athlete that I am today. It was a critical stepping stone in my personal athletic journey, providing structure and guidance at a formative time,” Spencer said. “I was able to venture out and explore my passions, while keeping Christ at the forefront.”
What’s next? He’s setting his sights on the LA Olympics in 2028. Stay tuned!

INCOMING MUSTANG DELIVERS SIGHT FOR SORE EYES!

Incoming freshman Christopher Blackman ‘29 started making a difference at Immaculate before he even arrived!
The St. Mary School Ridgefield student launched Second Sight, a donation drive to collect gently used eyeglass frames for people in need, as his Capstone Project in eighth grade. “I’ve worn glasses since I was six, and I’ve learned that the frames—not the lenses—are often the most expensive part,” said Blackman. “Fortunately, my parents can afford new glasses each year, but I know that’s not the case for everyone.”
Blackman created posters, organized a schoolwide donation effort and expanded the drive to Immaculate. He also built a website, www. secondsightorg.com, to raise awareness. In the end, he collected 168 frames and over 20 lenses, which he donated to the Lions Club of North Salem to support the Lions Vision Program, where eyeglasses are distributed to those in underserved communities.
GIFTS IN KIND

In addition to gifts of cash and securities, Immaculate receives gifts of equipment, services and personal property. The following is a list of those that generously donated such gifts to Immaculate during the 2024-2025 school year.

A Big Thanks to the Mustang All Sports Club!
The Mustang All Sport Club (MASC) was created as a separate group of the Immaculate High School Parents Association (IPA). Its mission is to provide a way for parents to focus on the needs of student-athletes–and they have accomplished a tremendous number of projects!
We want to congratulate retiring Mustang All Sports Club Board
Members Chris Spahn and Christine Cappiello for receiving the Diocese of Bridgeport’s St. Thomas Aquinas Award. This honor recognizes volunteerism, stewardship and a willingness to serve. We are grateful for their dedication. We also want to extend a huge thank you to the Miller Family who generously funded the renovation of Mustang Valley’s concession stand!
In the past, student-athletes and parents contributed time to raise funds for specific athletic projects such as a new scoreboard, field upgrades and new athletic storage shed by hosting events like a car wash, donut fundraiser, offering 50/50 tickets at games and selling food at home games.
Robert Taylor Photography Photography services and images
Carol Stone Volunteer thank you lunch items
Over the past few years, MASC added to that list of accomplishments in many ways:
• Providing replacement chairs for the Bobby Plumb Gymnasium
• Buying our eSports Team new gaming chairs and t-shirts for the State Championships
• Contributing to all team Senior Nights
• Replacing the floor of the Girls Locker Room
You can learn more about supporting MASC by going to the Athletics tab of our Immaculate website: www.immaculatehs.org

Veterans Day Assembly

The Veterans Day tribute is a beloved annual tradition at Immaculate, filled with music, speeches and patriotism. The school’s Inspire Choir sang as the military color guard presented the United States and military flags. Those in attendance included local distinguished veterans, students, faculty, staff, Immaculate alumnus and state Superior Court Judge Thomas J. Saadi and keynote speaker Retired Colonel Tom Mertens, a former Immaculate teacher. School leaders recognized each local veteran at the assembly and presented them with a gift recognizing their service.
Immaculate presented a check for $2,160 to the Connecticut Department of Veterans Affairs. The money was raised by IHS community members who purchased flags with yellow ribbons to recognize a special veteran by name on Immaculate’s Veterans Hill of Honor.

Cheers to the Class of 1974: A Golden Reunion!

The Class of 1974 celebrated its 50th reunion in the fall, a truly golden milestone that included its members’ induction as Golden Mustangs! The weekend was a wonderful time for reconnecting and making new memories, featuring a welcome reception, Mass, brunch, a school tour and a memorable reunion celebration. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who attended and to the dedicated reunion committee for organizing such a wonderful event.
We are truly grateful to the Class of 1974 for their incredible thoughtfulness and generosity! The class raised over $5,000 to support the Joe Canestrari Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship honors their classmate and friend, Joe Canestrari ‘74, and recognizes a deserving student who embodies academic excellence, extracurricular involvement and positive school spirit. To further amplify this impact, the Colonel Cares Foundation, another organization established in Joe’s memory, generously matched the Class of 1974’s donation, bringing the total reunion class gift to over $10,000.
During the reunion Mass and brunch, the first recipient of the Joe Canestrari Memorial Scholarship, Jordan Kenney ’27, was proudly recognized. Jordan’s name was unveiled on a commemorative plaque,
and amidst cheers, he spoke movingly to thank the Class of 1974 for their contributions to the scholarship. He shared his hope of one day celebrating his own 50th reunion, and sharing memories with his friends, just as the Class of ‘74 did. He also expressed his aspiration to be a good friend to others, just as Joe Canestrari ‘74 was to his classmates.
Thank you to the Class of 1974 for your incredible support of future Immaculate Mustangs. Cheers to 50 years!

Join the IHS Alumni Association as a Class Representative! We are looking for Class Representatives to assist the alumni office with communicating and connecting with classmates. It’s easy, fun and advances the mission of IHS! You do not need to commit to spending a lot of time to make an immediate impact. If you have the time and interest, taking the lead on getting classmates together on an annual basis or helping to assemble a reunion committee every five years builds class unity and ties to IHS. If interested or for more information, please contact Jeannie Demko at jdemko@myimmaculatehs.org.
