Immaculate High School is a private, non-profit Catholic college preparatory institution serving students from over 25 communities in Connecticut and New York. Founded in 1962, an Immaculate High School education facilitates the formation of respect, responsibility and reverence by fostering the development of the whole student. Located in Danbury, CT, Immaculate High School is an independent Diocesan-sponsored Catholic high school.
Immaculate High School admits students of any race, creed, national or ethnic origin and handicapped status to all rights, privileges, activities and generally does not discriminate in these areas in the administration of its education policies, scholarship and loan programs, athletic or other school-administered programs.
She has impressed all of us, exhibiting excellent leadership, making thoughtful decisions, anticipating and meeting challenges and communicating effectively. After a thorough process conducted by our search committee, the Board unanimously voted for Ms. Neil’s appointment. Her enthusiasm about Immaculate is contagious–and she is thoroughly committed to an innovative vision for its future.
-Joseph Draper ‘82, Chairperson, IHS Board of Directors
It has been quite a year! I am truly honored to take on the new position of Head of School at Immaculate bestowed on me by the Immaculate High School Board of Directors with the blessing of Diocese of Bridgeport Bishop Frank J. Caggiano.
As many of you know, I had been serving as acting Head of School for the 2023-24 school year, following President Mary R. Maloney’s retirement. I have been an educator for 30 years, teaching in Virginia, Switzerland and here at Immaculate for six years before taking on the role of principal.
My love and passion for our Mustang community runs deep. I am humbled and excited to take on this position at a time when I see so much possibility for Immaculate. Our staff is world class and we have amazing families from over 25 towns in Connecticut and New York. We were once again ranked #1 Catholic Co-Ed Day School in Connecticut and also moved up four spots to become #4 Best Catholic High School in the state (according to Niche). Immaculate was also honored as the #8 Best High School for Athletes.
I plan to build on this success as we look for more ways to innovate, support our students in their development and attract more quality candidates to our school community. As students, parents, friends and alumni in our Immaculate family, I hope you will join me in this endeavor.
Your recognition of how truly special an Immaculate education is–and your ongoing support–make our success possible!
With gratitude,
Wendy M. Neil Head of School
It’s been a “fantastique” year for some Immaculate students–and French visitors!
It all started when Immaculate French teacher Catherine McDonough met with FideoJoy’s founder, Segolene de Tiliere, in February 2023. The organization is a total immersion Catholic youth exchange program based in Lyon, France. Some of McDonough’s students were interested in the program so three French students came to stay with the respective families of Alina Budzynski ‘26, Daviana Reyes Espinal ‘26 and Bianca Costa ‘26 in October 2023.
Immaculate’s visitors attended IHS during the day, and engaged in activities with their host families outside of school. Thanks to the graciousness of those families, the three French students had an incredible and unique experience!
In June 2024, Daviana, Alina and Bianca had the chance to travel to France to reciprocate the exchange. They each lived in a different area of France so they were fully immersed in the French language and culture by participating in activities with their host families and by attending school for the first part of their stay.
Alina lived in Sartrouville, 10 miles from the center of Paris. Alina went to school each day in Neuilly, on the banks of the Seine River. She got to experience high school and participated in classes in French. The bonus was to freely spend her two-hour lunch break wandering the streets of Paris, eating at local cafes, shopping and visiting all the wonderful sights! “I feel like I am waking up in a movie every morning,” Budzynski said.
Daviana lived in Le Mans, in the Loire region of northwestern France. “I am forever grateful for the opportunity to go stay with my French student and to live in that manner and experience her life. It was truly fascinating,” she said. “I got to familiarize myself with a new culture, country and people I would have never otherwise gotten the chance to know. I got to experience all the tourist attractions in a unique way which I would not have traded for anything”.
Bianca described her experience as “challenging in the beginning, but also incredible.” She lived in Lille, in the northern part of France near the border with Belgium. “Whatever makes you uncomfortable is your biggest opportunity for growth”.
We hope to facilitate more of these incredible exchanges in the future! À bientôt!
In June the Immaculate High School Board of Directors announced that Jennifer Gallo has been named Dean of Academics.
As dean, she will develop and support the school’s academic programs and instruction, be an academic coach for the teachers and lead strategic curriculum planning, implementation and tracking including serving as a liaison for both parents and teachers with academic and curriculum questions.
Ms. Gallo holds a bachelor’s degree in education from Iona College plus two master’s degrees from Mercy College/Fordham University—one as a literacy specialist and another in school building leadership.
She has taught at all levels; preschool and elementary school in the Bronx, then middle school at Saint Mary School in Ridgefield, followed by three years at Immaculate High School where she has been teaching history and English.
What she will miss most about being in the classroom is the relationships with the students. “Establishing good working relationships with students is a key element of effective teaching,” she comments.
In her new role she hopes to still be in the classroom some of the time in support of the teachers, assisting with goal setting, relationship building and professional growth as well as sharing good instructional ideas from internal and external sources across the building.
Immaculate faculty have a strong, positive, student-centered culture. I am excited and motivated to step into this new position. Just as we ask our students to come in every day ready to learn and grow, I will approach my new responsibilities with the expectation that I will learn and grow while encouraging and supporting the teachers in their professional development and success.
We say a fond farewell to IT Director Dave Cirella after 12 years of friendly, timely and effective service to the students, faculty and staff of Immaculate High School.
Dave came to Immaculate to help launch the 1:1 iPad program, an initiative begun by then Principal Joe Carmen and President Kathleen Casey. He is responsible for the architecture of the network infrastructure, bolstering it to run a device for each student and faculty member in the school as well as workstations for the administrative staff. Over the years the devices have gone from iPads to laptops and public information screen installations plus an athletics/Hall of Fame electronic kiosk have been added. Through all the growth and change, Dave has ensured that our network is strong and secure, up to handling all the demands our busy community places on it.
When the Art Department was looking for a new instructor nine years ago, then President Mary Maloney called Leslie Quinn to see if she had ever considered teaching at the high school level. Leslie, an artist who had substitute taught at St. Rose of Lima Elementary School and in the Newtown School District, decided to apply and was hired by Joe Carmen.
Teaching teens is what she has come to love. “I like the give and take of adolescence,” she said. “Also in the high school art studio, one can really teach art, from fundamentals to technique as well as nurture the talents of one’s students.” She tried to keep her classroom an environment where students could come in and destress while they worked – a small break from the intensity of their academics where they could use a different part of their brains –although she did challenge and critique her AP students as they built their portfolios. The flourishing Art Club is another place where many students have benefited from her mentorship.
While at IHS, Dave launched the CyberPatriot Program, coaching teams to participate in the National Youth Cyber Defense Competition, which challenges teams of high school and middle school students to find and fix cybersecurity vulnerabilities in virtual operating systems. The Immaculate team was a four-time Connecticut Regional Champion under his leadership.
Dave also launched and was the initial instructor for a series of computer technology courses, IT Essentials and Networking Essentials, a two-course set, successful completion of which leads to professional certifications – and an elective, Introduction to Cyber Security.
In the athletic sphere, as the boys tennis coach in 2019, he led the team to its first ever appearance in the state championships where they placed third – the pinnacle in school history.
As he leaves, he wants to encourage students to “avoid the drama” and be open and accepting of everybody – respecting their cultures and personal circumstances.
In retirement he will indulge his love of travel, planning a fall trip to Scotland, England, Ireland and Wales, followed by later excursions to New Zealand and Australia as well as Germany. Portugal remains his best loved destination and will doubtlessly be visited many times in the coming years. “I love the culture, the food,” he said. “The cities and towns are beautiful.” In addition, he will be studying many languages with a goal of learning ten. Currently he is able to read Portuguese, German and Spanish.
Leslie appreciates the relationships she has been able to build with the students. She has a special place in her heart for the international students, navigating a foreign country and educational system, far away from home. It is gratifying for her when students take the time to write a letter about the impact she has had on them or return to visit or keep in touch after graduation and through college.
In 2021, Leslie was awarded a Foundations in Education grant which she used to purchase a document camera to be used in instruction, and a free-standing, foldable kiosks to accommodate traveling art shows. Through these shows, the students’ work gets more exposure and so does the school.
As much as Leslie has loved teaching at Immaculate High School, she came to a point this year when she felt that now is the time to move to her next phase of life. Her five sons are grown up, marrying and starting families. She wants to be present to all of them, be helpful and supportive. It is time to be with family.
She shares these words of advice for students,
“Work hard. Take responsibility. Stay close to your grandparents.”
What exactly is elephant toothpaste?
Why do different metals produce different colors when heated? How can you use heat to flatten a can in milliseconds? What is Oobleck made of?
Our AP Chemistry students are always up to something exciting in the lab and this year for the first time ever, our students took their chemistry experiments and knowledge out of Immaculate’s lab and into neighboring middle school classrooms! Stepping into the teacher’s role, they planned and delivered nine exciting science experiments, keeping a whole class of seventh graders engaged at both St. Peter School and St. Gregory the Great School in in Danbury. Each group performed three experiments using slides to explain exactly what happened and why to classes that buzzed with enthusiastic chatter after each demonstration. Our AP Chemistry students went above and beyond by creating engaging and informative lab experiences for the students, truly showcasing their deep understanding of the subject. The confidence and clarity with which the students presented complex topics was truly impressive.
These Mustangs know their geography! IHS students took third place in the Connecticut High School GeoChallenge this year. Our competitors: pictured above: Robert Pattison ‘27, Nick Paris ‘24, William Tucker ‘24, Jacob Saadi ‘26, and Rafi Antonios ‘26, Pictured below: Michael Hatcher ‘24, Jonathan Timmel ‘24, Kevin Bailie ‘24, Marco Dias ‘24, and Geno Ventresca ‘24
Lending the Mayor a Helping Hand! Jacob Saadi ‘26 did an internship in Danbury Mayor Roberto Alves’ office the second semester of this year. He said the most important thing he learned was how cities function and the purpose of local government. Saadi did everything from managing the front desk, to writing letters, to answering phone calls on constituent concerns and hosting the “Ask the Mayor” livestreams. “The internship has definitely opened many doors and ideas for my future,” Saadi said. “It has made me more interested in public service and lawmaking and those could be possible career opportunities I see myself taking.”
Danbury Public Schools celebrated Read Across America this March. Immaculate boys and girls basketball teams, with coaches Mingachos and Rendino, visited Morris Street School to read to the students. They also visited Ellsworth Avenue School to read the children their favorite stories and visit with teachers Kathy Flynn ‘89, Isabella Mingachos ‘16 and Principal Marnie Durkin ‘88. The classrooms were full of excitement as the basketball teams brought their favorite stories to life.
“Campus Ministry – be a part of something where you can come as you are.”
These simple words of invitation put a spotlight on Jen Doherty’s approach to the Campus Ministry program.
Following Jesus’ example, who met people where they were and showed them that faith is foundational to everyday life, Jen’s mission with Campus Ministry is to help students to make faith foundational not only in their Immaculate experience but throughout their lives. She offers spiritual, service and social opportunities, trusting that, through the grace of God, she is helping students to follow His plan for them.
Service Lifts Up Servers as Well as the Served Service projects this year included participating in the Danbury Regional Hospice color run fundraiser, making lunches for Danbury’s Dorothy Day Hospitality House, making beds at Villa Maria in Stamford for Diocesan Eucharistic pilgrims plus collecting clothing and toiletries and making breakfast for homeless individuals in NYC, the “breakfast run.” On New Year’s Eve and on Easter, Jen was joined by students, parents, alumni and members of her family to serve dinner at Dorothy Day.
Students reap benefits as well as the clients they serve. “The breakfast run was meaningful not only to provide the homeless with food, but also to talk to them and witness their positivity and perseverance. The experience reminded me of how important it is to be charitable in both big and small ways.” said Katie Carrasquillo ’26. “The breakfast run showed me the generosity of the Immaculate community in providing items and personal time. I feel very lucky to have this opportunity right in my high school community.” added Mikayla Hanel ’26.
The beauty of attending a Catholic school is the ability to freely gather to praise, thank and seek assistance from God. Jen asks leaders from teams, clubs and honor societies to read and serve at Mass, drawing attention to the value of participating in the faith. Students may also participate or lead at daily Rosary, Eucharistic Adoration, Stations of the Cross, retreats, reconciliation, advent wreath lighting and faith journey reflections. Jen has also started the singing of “Immaculate Mary” after Mass and the Rosary to honor our patroness Mary the Immaculate Conception.
Our faith is a relationship with God and we are created to live in community with Him and each other. We strengthen our relationship with Jesus and Mary through prayer, and with others by talking and doing things together. Jen plans social events such as serving refreshments after morning services and organizing Campus Ministry group attendance at games and shows.
Jen believes that, like Jesus’ apostles, we are ordinary people called to live His plan for us, each evolving differently on our faith journey through opening our hearts to His will. Campus Ministry supports students on their journey. Next year returning members will assume leadership roles in planning and running Campus Ministry activities, welcoming all to grow in their faith.
The assignment? To create Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), for wildfire monitoring and mitigation. Immaculate High School’s “Brave Engineers” squad used its innovation and knowledge in the areas of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) to take first place in the statewide challenge. This means they’ve come out on top six years in a row! This Immaculate STEM squad also earned an Honorable Mention in the RWDC National/International Competition.
Immaculate students created a state-of-the-art drone, the D-23 which was nicknamed “Firefly,” that met all the criteria the RWDC Challenge provided, and in several cases exceeded what was required. The Real World Design Challenge is an annual competition run by public and private partnerships, with the goal of setting a solid foundation for our future STEM workforce. It gives high school students the chance to work on real-world engineering challenges
using professional science and engineering resources in a virtual environment – applying classroom lessons to real-life challenges found in the working world.
“Our Brave Engineers did it again! We are so proud of all the hard work our Immaculate students put into this competition and their passion for STEM shows,” said Jeanine Antonios, Immaculate’s Career and Technology Department Chairperson and the team’s coach. “I’d also like to thank Ruthanne Szumski from Pratt and Whitney Aircraft Engines who served as a mentor for students on this project.”
“We continue to emphasize STEM in our Immaculate curriculum and extracurricular activities because we know it sets our students up for tremendous success in the professional world,” said Head of School Wendy Neil. “Great job Brave Engineers!”
For David Mitchell of New Milford, it all started 10 years ago when he stepped onto his first flight.
“Ever since then, I have been fascinated by the concept of aviation and the entire industry that propels it forward,” Mitchell said. “I found many different paths in the industry that interest me, but recently–especially through my academics at Immaculate–I have been called toward one specific path: piloting.”
Mitchell will attend Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University next year, the nation’s only university specializing in aviation and aerospace, on the “Accelerated Private Pilot Track.” He credits his family’s support plus Immaculate High School’s rigorous academics and robust college prep strategy. Mitchell took the school’s Advanced Placement Physics, a course taught in conjunction with the University of Connecticut, and Advanced Placement Statistics, done in partnership with Western Connecticut State University. Both gave him a broader understanding of the aviation field, while offering the opportunity to earn college credit through the University of Connecticut and Western Connecticut State University respectively.
Mitchell’s Immaculate counselor also guided him toward his top four school choices, aided in part by special software and databases, and he applied early to his top pick. He was elated to receive his acceptance to Embry-Riddle in October 2023. “This enabled me to continue stress-free throughout most of my senior year without the hassle of college admissions above my head until May,” he said.
If you don’t manage your own career, someone else will.
Those were the words of Immaculate’s Career Day keynote speaker, Rob O’Neill ‘91, who is the chief financial officer of Viatris, a global pharmaceutical company. He said he came to Immaculate Friday, April 26 from Pittsburgh because he still cares about the school that helped him achieve success.
“When I went off to Bryant University I felt well prepared, not only educationally but spiritually,” O’Neill told students. “I should probably tell you that your faith and your morals are extremely important. As you go through life and your career, you’re going to be challenged and I’m going to ask you now to consider not compromising on your morals.”
Twenty-one speakers met with students in small groups in Immaculate’s classrooms as part of the annual event. Among them were a civil defense attorney, social worker, registered dietician, IT director, school counselor, financial planner, biotechnology executive, pastry chef, Sikorsky flight operations chief, registered nurse, TV producer, restaurant owner, teacher, author and sales director.
“We are blessed with an incredible alumni community that gives back in so many ways,” said Jeannie (Coleman) Demko ‘88, Director of Alumni and Events. “Our graduates go on to be successful in a variety of careers and we love it when they come back to share advice and the secrets of their success with the Mustangs of today.”
Exposing students to as many career options as possible is one of the key objectives of Immaculate’s Counseling Department, where college prep truly begins on day one. “We have so many students whose curiosity and inspiration were sparked by hearing someone share the details – and journey – of their career,” said Tim Nash, Dean of Counseling. “And we receive great feedback from students on how helpful they find these events.”
Proud is an understatement!
We are beaming for Immaculate sophomore Jacob Murphy and his commitment to our community! We are honored to have such a dedicated young person who represents our spirit of service at IHS. A recent post from Mayor Roberto Alves says it all: “Jacob is an inspiring young man. He has volunteered over 500 hours of community service through local nonprofits such as Jericho Partnership, Dorothy Day and many more, all while playing three sports and maintaining good grades. He stopped by the mayor’s office for what he thought was a food rescue mission. We surprised him with an official mayor’s proclamation and we chatted about all his community service work and his future plans. Jacob gives us all hope for the future.”
Giving Tree ASL: The American Sign Language Club hosted its Giving from The Heart tree this year and our hallway overflowed with baby items. All our amazing donors truly touched our hearts, but more importantly they helped to clothe and take care of some of the neediest babies in our community. May God continue to bless and guide our Immaculate family.
Congratulations to Trilby Cellamare ‘24 for being recognized for her work with Hillside Food Pantry Outreach! She, along with 17 other student organizations from middle schools and high schools around Connecticut, were recognized for their spirit of service to others in their communities. Well done Trilby!
Brigid ‘24 and John ‘26 Connors spent their weekend collecting, sorting and delivering goods for Gretel’s Heart. So many people in need will benefit from their hard work!
She’s the First is one of the most active clubs at Immaculate! In addition to spreading Saint Patrick’s Day cheer messages throughout the school and delivering smiles through candy grams, they collected used books to benefit the Connecticut Institutes for Families, Inc. and raised almost $250 through Candy Gram to benefit charities like Ann’s Place. They also collected personal care products to support local high school students. During the holiday season they put their creative talents to work in decorating a tree for the Festival of Trees at Ann’s Place raising funds to provide comfort, support and resources to people living with cancer.
Stuff the Bus: This year, our National Honor Society worked closely with alumni Paul Hiro, Emil Curran and Mike and Margaret (Midge) Fagan all from the class of ‘68 to “Stuff the Bus.” They collected food items during school lunch periods and collected items within the community on a Saturday. The group delivered the food to Jericho Partnership, which serves at-risk youth in Danbury.
“It’s part of the fabric of who we are at Immaculate. We support students’ personal development-and we give back
in
a huge way.”
- Jen Doherty, Director of Campus & Music Ministry and Fine Arts Department Chair
The IHS Stable not only came up with a great design for this past year’s homecoming shirts but raised an amazing $660 through shirt sales! Funds raised were donated to the American Cancer Society.
Key Club Shoe Boxes: Each year our IHS Key Club celebrates the holiday season by giving back to members within our community that are less fortunate. They wrapped, filled and delivered dozens of shoe boxes stuffed with gifts to Samaritan’s Purse! Operation Christmas Child provides presents to children around the world during the Christmas season.
Chelsea’s Charity, founded by Immaculate freshman Chelsea Phaire, was featured on Nickelodeon in December. Chelsea’s Charity collects and gives art supplies to children in need so that they can creatively express their emotions and overcome challenging times! For more info visit her website at www.chelseascharity.org.
Swinging for a good cause! Our Girls Softball team hit the field to raise money for the Caroline Previdi Foundation. The charity was created in memory of Caroline Previdi, a first grader who was lost in the Sandy Hook Elementary tragedy.
Our Boys Varsity Baseball Team faced off against Bethel High School all in the name of raising funds to support breast cancer awareness. We would like to thank Immaculate parents Kateri and Marc Kenney of Southbury for organizing!
IHS Campus Ministry students and parent volunteers, including parents of alumni, made a trip to New York City on Palm Sunday to distribute clothing and food to the city’s homeless. As part of the Midnight Run Program, clothing, food and toiletries were collected, breakfast sandwiches and oatmeal prepared, bagged lunches packed and off our group went to serve approximately 75 people in need in lower Manhattan.
Eucharistic Procession: On Pentecost Sunday, Campus Ministry and Students for Life spent the afternoon making beds and cleaning bathrooms at the retreat house in Stamford where pilgrims for the Eucharistic procession will be staying! The Eucharistic Procession throughout the Diocese of Bridgeport is an historic invitation to celebrate the gift of the Eucharist in our lives.

Immaculate’s production of Disney’s The Little Mermaid delighted sold out audiences at Edmond Town Hall, Newtown. It is the story of Ariel, a young, headstrong princess of the seas who wishes to establish herself in the world of humans. Aside from the natural opposition of her father Triton, she encounters difficulties stemming from her own impetuous decision to accept the aid of her father’s sister and enemy, Ursula. Friends come to the rescue, lessons are learned, hidden histories are revealed and understandings are reached.
The show was a feast for the senses combining awesome voices, dazzling dancing and a kaleidoscope of resplendent costuming and sets. Staging a familiar story, seen almost ubiquitously by today’s youth can pose a challenge to provide something that feels fresh while delivering the well-known scenes. Our cast and crew accomplished it with confidence, humor and flash.

The Drama Club presentation of The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane introduced audiences to a vain, self-involved china rabbit living a pampered life, in a well-to-do family, doted on by a little girl named Abilene. Edward’s life is comfortable until it is not, when he is separated from Abilene and passes, over many years, through one new situation after another, bringing him into contact with a variety of people struggling against loneliness, cruelty, poverty, illness and grief. These experiences touch his heart as he learns about loss and recovery, kindness and compassion; his physical journey becoming the catalyst for a personal journey away from his selfish and conceited past.
The excellent and heartfelt character portrayals by our student actors brought audiences along on the journey, causing many an empathetic tear to be shed first in compassion for those suffering and then relief seeing Edward’s personal growth. These actors accomplished challenging material exceedingly well, edifying and entertaining all in the room.

“The experience working with this level of music and musicians has absolutely transformed our high school singers,” said Fine Arts Department Chair Jen Doherty. “The conductors urged students to not just impress the audience, but inspire them through music to choose love and be a catalyst for change in our world. Our choir members were moved by the music as well and told me they got goosebumps while performing.”
Doherty credits a generous donation from her fifth grade drama teacher, Mr. Dean Smith, and the support of several other individuals for making the trip to New York City possible for all 20 students who attended. The idea began in the fall when Doherty submitted recordings of Immaculate’s Inspire Choir performing the previous spring. She was thrilled to receive the news that the choir made the cut and they started learning the music in early January.
“You know the old adage: How do you get to Carnegie Hall? And the answer is practice, practice, practice,” Doherty said. “Our students spent Sunday through Tuesday perfecting the music with the entire ensemble in New York - plus put in lots of practice beforehand. I am so proud of them!”

A HUGE congratulations to Jaelynn Melchor ‘27, winner of the Division Local Level for the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians, for her brilliant essay in which she was asked to “identify a woman who became involved in the Irish independence movement and/or freed the north from British colonialism”. Jaelynn’s submission took an interesting look at the importance and the sacrifice that these women made and continue to make on behalf of the movement.
Music isn’t just background noise in Immaculate; it’s a vibrant thread woven into the fabric of our high school experience. Whether it’s the impromptu performances in our Dining Hall or our electrifying musicals, music provides the soundtrack to many of our most memorable activities. It energizes our school spirit and creates a sense of community. It’s more than just entertainment; it’s a platform for expression, collaboration and fostering a shared love for the beauty of sound. In March we celebrate Music in our Schools with activities each week geared toward celebrating this love of all things music. We enjoyed Music in Our Schools with Dining Hall shows, Jukebox Lunch Fridays, Mystery Singers Mondays, Music Trivia Tuesdays and Little Mermaid mini performances (at Immaculate and out in the community)!

“I want Immaculate to be here forever and for its doors to remain open to all who wish to enter.”
- Bob Gerwien, Sr.
He served 35 years at Immaculate as a teacher, coach and principal. And, during that time, Bob Gerwien, Sr. touched countless lives. He believes wholeheartedly in Immaculate’s mission and that’s why we established the Robert E. Gerwien, Sr. Scholarship
Help us keep his dream alive! We want to share the stories of some special donors who are just as committed to preserving Immaculate’s legacy as Bob Gerwien, Sr. is himself. A huge thank you to them! If you’re interested in establishing a scholarship, please contact wneil@ myimmaculatehs. org. We look forward to featuring many more named scholarships in the years to come!
Gifts of any amount and named scholarship gifts to the endowment are welcome. Naming a scholarship allows you and your family to leave a lasting legacy at Immaculate High School. The minimum donor level to establish a named scholarship is $25,000.
PAUL COLEMAN ‘74 will never forget the day he met Joe Canestrari ‘74.
They were 12 years old, playing basketball at the Danbury War Memorial. A few years later, they both entered Immaculate High School, sat together in the same homeroom, had lockers side by side and ignited a friendship that would last over half a century.
“How do I encapsulate a 56-year relationship?” Coleman asked. “I’m still working on how to describe it.”
One thing he does know: Joe Canestrari was extraordinary. “Even as a young kid he had his principles,” Coleman said. “I like to tell people he was a jock who wasn’t scared of being a nerd–a heck of a football player, and a great baseball player. He was an outstanding student but he didn’t toot his own horn much. He had a great sense of humor, was a tremendously loyal person and if you needed his help…well, you got it.”
When Canestrari passed away from pancreatic cancer, Coleman started thinking about how he could honor his old friend–and decided on an Immaculate scholarship in his name. Canestrari was a retired Air Force colonel, leader in the field of physical therapy, a professor, avid fisherman, father and grandfather.
The first scholarship will be awarded to a student entering their sophomore year who is on the Honor Roll, must participate in sports or an extracurricular activity and be a positive member of his or her class. “We’re helping out a young person who’s aspiring to have a good adult life like Joe,” Coleman said.
CAROL HENRY may not have attended Immaculate herself–but she made sure her children and their children did because of its academic excellence and nurturing family environment.
“We wanted our girls at a school where both their minds and hearts were formed,” Henry said, referring to the decision she made with her late husband Bernie. “Immaculate provided an extension of the values we tried to instill at home and we loved the family environment of the school, with administrators and teachers who truly cared about our children.” Henry’s daughters are Denise (Henry) Suarez ‘87 (director of admissions at Immaculate), Dana (Henry) Saidman ‘87 and Andrea Henry ‘90. Suarez’ children Joseph ‘18, Madeline ‘20 and Christopher ‘22 all graduated from the school. And Saidman’s daughters Jenna ‘24 (this year’s salutatorian) and Angela ‘19 were Mustangs.
The family’s matriarch believes the four high school years are critical and “cannot think of a better environment for young people” than Immaculate. When Henry learned of the Bob Gerwien endowed scholarship campaign, she thought it was the perfect way to honor her children’s former principal, found a scholarship in her family’s name and help others experience the gift of a college prep education.
“Immaculate continues to show their students that God is present and active in their lives,” she said. They become instruments of God’s grace in a world that increasingly needs what an Immaculate education provides. As such, we must do everything we can to insure the future of this school.”
ROBERT MURPHY “When faith is the cornerstone of a teenager’s life, I think it is powerful,” said Robert Murphy of Danbury.
Murphy credits his own Catholic school education for having a profound impact on his life. And he’s seen what it can do for Mustangs too. “I am not an alumnus nor parent of Immaculate students, but rather someone who has had the opportunity to see the impact of an Immaculate education on my three nieces and, more recently, to watch my five grand nieces and nephews graduate from the school prepared for entrance to outstanding colleges,” he said.
This is why Murphy decided to create a scholarship at Immaculate, just like his sister Carol Henry.
“When you reach a certain point in your life and you think about where you can make a difference, I realize that a meaningful gift at a school like Immaculate can have a much larger impact than a similar gift at a larger institution,” Murphy, who is retired from the airline industry, said. “Funding an endowed scholarship gives me the opportunity to create a lasting legacy.”
He urges other like-minded members of the Immaculate community to consider doing the same, especially since donations can be a tax deduction.
“To me, it’s a win-win that I hope more and more donors will consider as we all want Immaculate to thrive for years to come!” he told us.
CHRIS PALMER ‘68 knows all about coaching. After all, he’s done it in the NFL.
“Coaching is taking a person where they don’t think they can go,” he said, “and I think that’s what Immaculate does. It’s actually what good teachers do. Teaching and coaching are extremely similar.”
Palmer and his wife Donna (Begg) ‘67 met at Immaculate and he went on to become the head football coach at the University of New Haven and Boston University. He also served as head coach for the Cleveland Browns, and had stints as an assistant coach for a host of other NFL teams including the Dallas Cowboys, New England Patriots and New York Giants.
When Palmer visits Immaculate, he said, it makes him appreciate how special the school community is all over again. “When I see the kids that make up the school, the true bond teachers have with students and Wendy as the leader mingling with alumni…it made me convinced that we had to help more students become a Mustang,” he said.
So the Palmers decided to fund a scholarship that will help promising students afford Immaculate. They appreciate the fact that each student brings unique qualities to the school and want to celebrate that. “Donna was in a lot of plays at IHS so we wanted to create a scholarship that is academic but also recognizes a student who has a special quality that will enhance the student body overall,” he explained. “We want each incoming class to have a great variety of kids.”
November 3, 2023, Immaculate High School’s fifth annual Day of Giving brought together parents, students, alumni, friends, businesses, faculty and staff in support of our mission. We were blessed by 348 individual donors who, together, gave 387 gifts totaling over $86,000.00.
Thank you to all who participated and made this a banner day for Mustangs. Congratulations to the Class of ‘91 who were first in percent of participation amongst alumni and the Class of ‘25 who won the current student competition.

On September 1, 2023, Bishop Frank J. Caggiano visited Immaculate to celebrate Mass for our students and bless the new turf field in Mustang Valley. The blessing ceremony was attended by all students, faculty and staff as well as Danbury Mayor Dean Esposito and members of the IHS Board of Directors.
Dear Mustang Family,
As I write this in early July 2024, it’s in the afterglow of yet another wonderful year at Immaculate. The graduation ceremony highlighted the accomplishments of our students and the inspiring community that surrounds and supports them. It’s humbling and energizing.
As of June 30, 2024 we successfully closed our capital campaign. Between our capital investments and our launch of the Robert E. Gerwien Foundation and Scholarship, we raised almost $1.4 million. Of this, over one million dollars has been received and over three hundred and fifty thousand is anticipated over the next few months. Our foundation has over three hundred thousand dollars and has more than a dozen named scholarships. It’s a priority of our school board and leadership to grow the Gerwien Foundation year after year and we will be reviewing further capital improvements case by case. Through disciplined fiscal management, we remain price competitive with a balanced budget.
We thank all of you for the many ways that you contribute to the success of our school. The many thousands of hours that everyone volunteers their time helps our school in ways far beyond the immediate collection of tickets, cleaned floors or served snacks. For the third year in a row, we are the number one ranked Catholic co-ed day school in Connecticut. Thirteen years ago we were outside the top 10. Our ranking reflects the excellence in serving the needs of our students from the classroom, to the Chapel, to our Counseling Department, to the arts and to athletics.
It’s an honor and a blessing to serve as Board Chairperson and as a member of the Immaculate community. I look forward to another amazing year!
My warmest regards,
Joseph T. Draper ‘82
The Immaculate High School Board of Directors was established in July 2021. Its fiduciary role and responsibilities have been instrumental in assisting with strengthening the implementation of the strategic plans set forth by the school. The Board consists of volunteers who are charged with using their professional expertise to assist in spiritual life, finance, development, alumni, athletics, enrollment, facilities and technology. We are thankful for their service during the 2023-24 school year.

Maximillian Fleming of Redding got a score of 1440, a perfect score, on the PSAT 8/9.
Immaculate administers the PSAT to freshman and sophomores as a way to practice for the SAT test junior year. It’s all part of the school’s rigorous college preparatory program. Fleming was the only student taking the PSAT at Immaculate this year to earn a perfect score. The PSAT 8/9 consists of 98 questions divided into two sections, reading and writing and math, and takes approximately 134 minutes to complete (according to the College Board).
“We are incredibly proud of him,” said Dean of Counseling Timothy Nash. “This is no easy feat. We also encourage all students that, no matter what score they earned, there’s always time to practice and improve. This is precisely why we give the PSAT as a practice exam.”

Military color guard presented the United States and military flags while the school’s Inspire Choir opened the ceremony, which included distinguished veterans, Immaculate alumnus and state Superior Court Judge Thomas Saadi, school leaders and students. Immaculate’s sign language students also signed the songs for the audience. The school publicly recognized each local veteran in attendance and presented them with a gift commemorating their service.
Visitors to the ceremony were welcomed to Immaculate by the school’s Veterans Hill of Honor on its front lawn. The school’s community members purchased flags with yellow ribbons to recognize a special veteran by name. Immaculate presented a check for $2,000 from the proceeds of this tribute which will support the Connecticut Department of Veterans Affairs.
Immaculate’s Chaplain Father Philip Phan started the ceremony with gratitude for all who have served. “We thank you for your sacrifice, courage and selflessness. Bless all our veterans, especially those who bear the physical and emotional scars of their service,” Phan said. “Grant them healing, comfort and peace. We pray for those who have given their lives in the service of our nation. May their souls rest in your eternal peace.”

Sandra Champlain ‘84 is thrilled to share the following. “I am sure we all have great moms who gave us our start in life. A year ago, I entered a nationwide contest that asked for stories of extraordinary mothers to tell the story of my mom, Marion. I did not know what the contest was for, but knew I MUST share her incredible story. Almost a year later, I learned that I was a contest winner and Mom’s story is now in a #1 bestselling book called “Love, Mom” by Dr. Nicole Saphier, radiologist at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in NYC. The book has been promoted all over television with several hundred thousands of copies sold. My 82-year-old mom had no idea that I entered her story in the contest and it has brought so much excitement back into our lives after losing our 33-year old business due to Covid. We never know the difference we can make if we follow our instincts and aim our sights at being loving and making a difference for another.”

Helping people unpack patterns and beliefs that don’t serve them and guide them to create the life they desire is her mission.

B“Glory days, well they’ll pass you by. Glory days, in the wink of a young girl’s eye. Glory days! Glory days!” - Bruce Springsteen
ruce Springsteen’s anthem filled the air for a night filled with storytelling, happy memories and lifelong friendships. Over 100 Mustangs galloped down memory lane reliving their own “glory days”! Athletes and coaches from across the decades perused memorabilia, laughter echoing through the Dining Hall as old friends reconnected. The energy was electric as everyone gathered for photos, and new friendships blossomed alongside cherished memories.
A special thanks to Chris ‘68 and Donna (Begg) ‘67 Palmer for their incredible generosity in hosting the event and for all the behind the scenes preparations to make the evening such a great success. We are also grateful to Jason ‘94 and Kelly (Durkin) ’93 LaReau and their team at J. Law Kitchen & Craft Bar. Their delicious pizza and beer added to the enjoyment of the evening. It was a night that truly captured the essence of being a Mustang!
Thank you to everyone who attended the IHS Class of 1973 50th Reunion celebrations. It was a great weekend to be a Mustang! There were so many smiling faces at this joy-filled reunion and the bonds of friendship were evident as alumni and guests told stories, shared memories, laughed and reconnected. The weekend celebrations included a welcome reception on Friday evening, reunion celebration on Saturday night and a Mass at St. Peter’s Church, school tour and brunch on Sunday. Special thanks to the reunion committee
for putting together such a wonderful weekend! For those who were unable to attend, you were missed, but present in the minds, hearts and memories of your classmates. Thank you to all who contributed to the 50th Reunion class gift. The Class of 72 raised $7,500 in support of refurbishing the Learning Commons. A plaque etched with “The Class of 1973 50th Reunion” will be placed outside the Learning Commons acknowledging the class gift. We are so grateful for the continued support of our amazing alumni.
For many families, attending Immaculate is a legacy that continues from generation to generation. In October, we welcomed so many alumni who are also current parents and their children at the first Legacy Family Breakfast and Mass. This inaugural event was a wonderful way to recognize that Immaculate’s many “legacies” are a very special feature of our community. A continental breakfast was served in the Learning Commons and there was much enjoyment to be had as parents perused their yearbooks together with their children. After breakfast, our legacy families attended Mass celebrated by Fr. Phan.
Alumni from the Classes of 2016-2023 came home to IHS for our first ever Young Alumni Networking Luncheon. Our young alums had the opportunity to connect, mingle, chat, ask questions and network while enjoying lunch together. Special thanks to Carl Bailey ‘71, Sal Chieffalo ‘81 and Annette (Bass) Braun ‘04 for sharing their professional advice and expertise with some of our young alums!
Gifts from alumni are a powerful vote of confidence in the future of Immaculate High School. Alumni who contribute are making a strong statement about the education they received and their desire to ensure that future generations have the same opportunities. The Immaculate community is grateful to the following alumni for their generous gifts made July 1, 2022 through June 30, 2023.

Each year the graduating class leaves the school a senior class gift. Individual students make monetary gifts to support a project or element of the school facility or program that stands in testament to the legacy of the newly minted alumni. The Class of 2024 has chosen to beautify the school grounds with the purchase and planting of a tree which will be accompanied by a plaque identifying them as the benefactors. Thank you to the following members of the Class of 2024 for their contribution to their senior class gift.

Join the IHS Alumni Association as a Class Representative! We are looking for class representatives to assist the alumni office with communicating and connecting with classmates. It’s easy, fun and advances the mission of IHS! You do not need to commit to spending a lot of time to make an immediate impact. If you have the time and interest, taking the lead on getting classmates together on an annual basis or helping to assemble a reunion committee every five years builds class unity and ties to IHS. If interested or for more information, please contact Jeannie Demko at jdemko@myimmaculatehs.org.
Eternal rest grant unto them O Lord and let perpetual light shine upon them. May their souls, and all the souls of the faithful departed, through Your mercy, rest in peace.
Please join us as we offer prayers for the members of the Immaculate community who have recently passed away.

For many families, attending Immaculate is a legacy that continues from generation to generation. We are proud to recognize five legacy families with students from the Class of 2024.
class rings.
The founding of Immaculate High School involved profound and long-term acts of service on the part of Catholic parents in Danbury. They understood that for Immaculate to come into being, grow and flourish it needed the active involvement of the community. Even as they intended their families to benefit from the Catholic education to be offered they were committed to putting into place the ability to provide it.
Here is a testimonial from one of our alumni, Ann Gallagher Taylor ’73, about the hard work and generosity of a group of parents in the early days of our school.
My earliest memory of Immaculate High School is as a young girl listening to my father, Bill Gallagher, talking about the formation of the school. He was one of a group of Danbury area parents who approached Bishop Walter Curtis about building a Catholic High School for our community. While the Bishop strongly supported the premise, he told the parents that they would need to assist in raising the necessary funds. As such, the group took up a fundraising campaign, going door to door seeking donations. As their efforts progressed, several in that group would sign a note for the school mortgage, putting their own homes up as collateral.
My Dad, along with other dedicated parents including Judge Howard Moraghan and Norman Craig, would go on to serve 20 plus years on the IHS Parents Advisory Board. Coincidentally, my parents sent their 14 children to IHS.
This is the legacy of the Immaculate High School family, as it is with many Catholic educational and service organizations. We are profoundly grateful for these parents’ service, dedication and generosity. Without them and succeeding generations of generous parents, alumni and friends, Immaculate High School would not be what it is today.
