Presidents Report Well done to everyone involved in the BIGGEST NATIONAL SHOW EVER ! What an event !!! The atmostphere was fantastic and a real credit to the exhibitors and organisers. We hope that those that couldn’t make it this year will join us next year as it is a realy special event. The live web cam was a huge hit in Australia and overseas and has certainly put the Aussie Miniature Horses on the world stage. This issue includes all the results and you’ll see how competitive these classes were - even when the placings went to Top 10 ! Congratulations to all exhibitors. Thank you to all advertisers and sponsors for the show too - we had some DZHVRPH SURGXFW GRQDWHG IRU WKH DXFWLRQV DQG UDIÀHV <RXU VXSSRUW LV DPD]LQJ DQG DSSUHFLDWHG Social communication is certainly a popular medium these days and IMHR is again at the forefront of technology by creating a Facebook group for each state to ensure our members have open communication lines with each other. We still have the IMHR website and Facebook page and the new state groups are in addition to these. Take the opportunity to get your foaling kits together, test those alarms and get ready for bundles of joy to arrive ! Don’t forget to have those cameras ready to catch photos for our Foal Brag issues. IMHR is also proud to announce that we will be hosting the Miniature Horse events at Equitana in Sydney 10-13 November this year . We will have a stand in the Breed Village which has two stables - one stable is for the promotional literature and the other stable is for horses. We’d like to rotate the horses used in the display to give more people an opportunity to participate and prevent our horses becoming bored. We are also running a show during Equitana and details will be available soon. Due to time constraints we may be limited with the number of exhibitors but we will do our best to ensure as 10 - 13th November many can compete as possible.

Area Coordinator’s Reports Area Coordinator Report for Tamworth Tamworth hosted the IMHR National Championships this year. Entries were up on last year with over 480 horses, all competing for the array of National titles on offer. They came from as far away as Western Australlia and New Zealand. We were able to secure some fantastic media coverage and great exposure in the fast growing editorial Tamworth and District Local Horse Magazine. Chronic Equine Weight Loss by: Martha Mallicote, DVM

Chronic weight loss in the horse presents a diagnostic challenge that requires careful attention to detail. While there are numerous causes for weight loss, a methodical evaluation of these horses is more important than the lengthy list of possible diagnoses. The primary drivers of weight loss are decreased caloric intake, decreased nutrient utilization, and increased metabolic demands. Decreased caloric intake is caused by either a poor appetite or inadequate feeding. If the horse has a good appetite, then feeding management should be investigated. Assess feed for both appropriate quantity and quality. Steps should be taken to guarantee all horses, particularly those on the low end of the social order, have access to feed in-group situations. After examining feeding management, physical abnormalities should be examined. A poor appetite might be related to an inability to eat (due to swallowing and chewing problems or discomfort with lowering head/neck). Particularly in older horses, poor dental care can cause weight loss. Dental malocclusions (misalignments), tooth root abscesses, and periodontal disease will hamper the horse’s ability to process his feed. Increased metabolic demand results from normal conditions such as growth, increased exercise, pregnancy, and lactation, as well as illnesses such as sepsis (blood infection), organ failure, cancer, burns, or other severe trauma. Diagnostic Approach Your veterinarian can best evaluate the horse’s environment and management as part of a chronic weight loss work-up. First-line diagnostic tests for all weight loss cases include conducting a case history, physical examination, routine lab work, and fecal parasite analysis. A detailed history of the horse includes information about diet, supplements and medications, feeding arrangements, medical history, and deworming. Evaluation of body condition score and weight, an oral exam, observation of appetite/ingestion of feed, auscultation (listening with a stethoscope) of the patient’s heart and lungs, examination of hair/skin quality, hoof growth, and observation for any lameness are all part of the physical exam. Rectal palpation is also likely indicated for chronic weight loss cases. Blood tests can identify causes of weight loss and problems secondary to poor body condition. Additional diagnostic tools are available if initial weight loss evaluation does not reveal a cause. Intestinal absorption capacity can be evaluated via oral carbohydrate absorption tests. FAYLAURS MINIATURE HORSE STUD - NEW ZEALAND Faylaur’s Miniature Horse Stud is situated in Waitara in the province of Taranaki on the West Coast of the North Island in beautiful New Zealand. We are only a short distance from the sea and under the beautiful mountain Mt Egmont, also known as Mt Taranaki. We moved from the UK in 1991 where we bred and showed Welsh and part-bred ponies. We were here only a short time when we purchased a pony for our daughter who competed at pony club and local shows. I saw an advert advertising a ‘Miniature Horse Show’ and went along to watch, and from then I was hooked!!! Our stud was established in New Zealand in 1995 ZKHQ ZH SXUFKDVHG RXU ÂżUVW PLQLDWXUH :H ZHUH WROG they were addictive and now we have a small herd of approximately 30 horses, including 3 stallions. Two are imported from the USA, Lucky Four Shadowbucks Mister X, a gorgeous palomino pinto 32.75â€? and Mulligan’s Runs Dreams Midnight Desyn (I am a partner in My Dezyn Syndicate) a stunning silver dapple pinto. We have two USA imported mars and also a mare newly imported from Western Australia to add to our great band of broodmares. Most of our horses are registered with the American Miniature Horse Association (AMHA) as well as with New Zealand Miniature Horse Association (NZMHA). Our stallions have the bloodlines and pedigree of some of the most famous and well-known in the miniature horse industry. They are representatives of years of selective breeding to obtain WKH UHÂżQHG HOHJDQW DQG colourful miniature horses that we know today.

We are pleased with the success of our horses and have gained many Supreme and Grand National Champions with our own bred horses. Standard advice is to tidy manes and tails after exercise, when the horse is warm and hairs come out more easily. Freelance groom Denise Southwold says that if this isn’t practical, equip the horse with a neck cover, tail bandage and tailguard. Brush down the mane with the left hand, tweaking a few hairs at a time in between each stroke. The thimbles help your grip, and the brushing takes the horse’s mind off the tweaking.â€? Mountain and moorland specialist Lucy Maddon competes in both breed and open working hunter pony classes, so cannot pull her ponies’ tails. “If I don’t want to plait, I can get a reasonable ‘pulled’ look by dampening the hair at the top, putting on hair gel and bandaging,â€? she says. “If you leave the tail bandage on until the very last minute before you go in the ring, the effect lasts long enough, especially if the hair isn’t too coarse to start with.â€? Another approach is to use a thinning knife incorporating a razor-type blade. used in the saddle area, they do mean that muck is more likely to slide off than penetrate the hair shaft. Driving enthusiast Geraldine Gardiner, who has a snowy white Welsh section B pony, opts for a Lycra stretch coverall the night before a show. "This covers him from head to tail and if I put it on just before it gets dark, and hopefully before he lies down, he doesn't get too hot, even in summer," she says. "I also use a tail bag from a Western riding store. You plait the tail hair, put the bag over it, pass the fastening strap at the top through the plait and fasten it back to the bag." To make a travelling bag, cut the leg and then the toe off an old pair of tights. Pull the nylon tube over and up the tail and apply a tail bandage as normal.

Hackney enthusiast Tom Girden has a bay with four white socks. The night before a show, he covers the legs with a chalk-based product, mixed with water to a paste, then bandages over the top.

As every owner of a grey or coloured horse knows, it is a fact of life that it will find the sole pile of dung in an otherwise spotless bed to lie in – and the resulting stains can defy many cleaning products.

"Next morning, brush off the excess and put on clean bandages to travel", he says. "Make sure you cover the hocks and coronets with padding and the horse's legs should stay clean."

Although there are commercial shampoos designed specifically for white socks and coats, some experts opt for a less conventional approach. Julia woods, a mountain and moorland producer who specialises in (grey) Connemaras, says that her secret weapon is a bottle of washing up liquid. "Mares tails are the worst, because they become stained with pee and go yellow, she says. "I mix up the Liquid in hot water and soak the tail hairs below the dock in it. It's the end of the tail that stains most and as long as the pony is used to having it washed, you shouldn't have any problems – keep the dock area dry so that the detergent doesn't come in contact with the skin. "I soak them for as long as I can hold up the bucket. This means putting on the radio and trying to last out the length of a record!" Sandra Lawrence, a partner in Wulfstan Stud, opts for Persil when turning out sparkling skewbalds and piebalds. Again, white tails are the real challenge. Both she and Julia stress that it is important to rinse out all traces of the cleaning agent and, if necessary, use a conditioner afterwards. Prevention can be better than cure. Minimise stains by doubling up or plaiting tails overnight and bandaging the lower half; of course, you have to remove the bandage before turning out so the horse has protection from flies. Another tip from Julia is to use spray products meant to give a gloss to the coat. These work by coating the hairs and making them slightly slippery – so while they should not be

ponies are difficult and potentially dangerous to castrate standing. Also, certain breeds such as Shires and Standardbreds may be at an increased risk of evisceration (prolapse of intestine through the surgical wound) following the procedure, and this may affect how it is performed."

Carolyn Henderson – www.horsesandhound.co.uk article Expert veterinary advice on the options when having a horse gelded, aftercare and potential complications Castration is a routine operation, but should not be taken for granted. As equine vet Richard Payne explains, every case is individual — and while most operations go smoothly, there can occasionally be potentially serious and expensive complications "Castration, or gelding, is usually done for management reasons and can be carried out more or less at any age," explains Richard, of Rossdale and Partners, Newmarket. "Racehorses are usually castrated at the end of their twoyear-old season. In other disciplines, breeders like to geld colts before weaning, because they feel it is less stressful. "There are also occasions when mature stallions are castrated: with the older, fully developed horse there is a potentially greater risk of complication, such as herniation of the intestine." Local or general anaesthetic? The horse's age, size and previous handling may influence the vet's decision about where and how to carry out the procedure, either standing under local anaesthetic and sedation, or under general anaesthetic.

The advantage of castration under a general anaesthetic is that surgery can be carried out in a sterile environment and the wound can be closed — but the risk of death under a general anaesthetic is currently estimated at about one in 100, for all types of surgery. If either one or both of a colt's testicles have not "dropped" then standing castration will not be an option. The testicles will have to be located before they can be removed, which might involve keyhole surgery. Aftercare Correct aftercare means recovery from castration is usually quick; a racehorse can be back in canter work in seven to 14 days. "After surgery, horses usually need some degree of controlled exercise, such as going on a horse-walker or walking in-hand for half an hour twice a day," says Richard. "Strict rest is not a good option because it doesn't reduce the swelling. "With open castration, you need to wash the blood off the legs, but not interfere with the surgical site or you may let in infection. If horses are gelded in the paddock, you need to keep a close eye on them for the first 48hr. Muddy fields and dirty stables are not a suitable environment for newly castrated horses.

There are pros and cons to be considered with each scenario, as Richard explains: "Under the standing category of surgery, it should be done as an open castration, where you open the site, remove the testicles and leave the wound to drain.

"I usually give five days of antibiotics, plus antiinflammatories and analgesics as standard. To withhold pain-killing drugs is old-fashioned and inhumane."

"This is a clean but not sterile operation: you try to make it as near sterile as possible, but you're not in an aseptically prepared operating theatre. I feel that in standing surgery the wound should be left open, without tying anything off or putting in ligatures, because if there is any infection, it drains.

Routine castration is usually straightforward. But there can be complications, ranging from mild infection to serious risks such as evisceration, or peritonitis, an infection of the abdominal cavity.

"There is a risk that if you put in a stitch or two, you can think you've done a really good job in keeping everything clean — but if infection creeps in, sutures can act as a focus for infection because bugs love 'foreign bodies'. The worst scenario is that you end up with an abscess." In a perfect world, standing castration is performed in a clean environment such as a veterinary hospital, but Richard acknowledges that not all owners have easy access to these facilities. However, this procedure does demand that the horse has a reasonable temperament and has been handled correctly. Tim Mair, a vet at a Kent equine hospital, says: "It's usually impossible to castrate a foal when it's standing, and small

"A lot of people worry about the risk of haemorrhage, but if surgery is done correctly it isn't usually a major problem," says Richard. "The occasional horse will bleed more than average and this should never be ignored, but it isn't common." Schirrous cord is another rare but recognised problem. This is caused by infection in the stump of tissue left behind, which can result in the formation of a closed abscess. "Over the first three to six months after castration, the horse will develop painful swellings in the groin," explains Richard. "These may burst out, making you suspect that things have got better, but then you get a cycle of bursting and healing." If things don’t seem ‘normal’ after a castration - don’t hesitate to call in your vet to check - better safe than sorry. Ed.
