THE 8 LEVEL Lesson 1: Storage devices and data units of measurement

Definitions: Alternatively referred to as digital storage, storage, storage media, or storage medium, a storage device is any hardware capable of holding information either temporarily or permanently.

There are two types of storage devices used with computers: a primary storage device, such as RAM, and a secondary (auxiliary) storage device, like a hard drive. Secondary storage can be removable, internal, or external (secondary) storage device.

Without a storage device, your computer would not be able to save any settings or information. It is characterized by its name, type and storage capacity (that we could measure with Multiples of byte).

Are storage devices input and output devices?

No. Although these devices do send and receive information, they are not considered an input device or output device. It is more proper to refer to any device capable of storing and reading information as a storage device or a drive.

Magnetic storage devices Today, magnetic storage is one of the most common types of storage used with computers and is the technology that many computer hard drives use.

The hard disk is a non-volatile storage device which stores digitally encoded data on rapidly rotating platters with magnetic surfaces. 

Optical storage devices Another common storage is optical storage, which uses lasers and lights as its method of reading and writing data.

a- The CD (Compact Disk) The CD is the most common type of removable media, inexpensive but has a short lifespan. To read data from a CD, we use a CD-Drive or a CD Burner. But to save data on a CD, we should use only a CD Burner.

There are many types of Compact Disks like: CD-R, CD-RW, CD audio, CD-ROM.  CD-R A CD-R (Compact Disc-Recordable) is a variation of the Compact Disk invented by Philips and Sony. CD-R is a Write Once Read Many (WORM) optical medium and retains a high level of compatibility with standard CD readers.

CD-R has a storage capacity of 74 minutes of audio or 650 MB of data.

1  CD-RW Compact Disc ReWritable (CD-RW) is a rewritable optical disk format. CD-RW discs are usually produced in the most common CD-R disk capacities such as 650 and 700 MB. In theory a CD-RW disk can be written and erased roughly 1000 times, although in practice this number is much lower.

b. The DVD (also known as "Digital Versatile Disc" or "Digital Video Disc") DVD is a popular optical disc storage media format. Its main uses are video and data storage. Most DVDs are of the same dimensions as compact discs (CDs) but store more than six times as much data.  Variations of the term DVD often describe the way data is stored on the discs: DVDROM has data which can only be read and not written, DVD-R and DVD+R can only record data once and then function as a DVD-ROM. DVD-RW, DVD+RW and DVDRAM can both record and erase data multiple times.

//c. The Blu-ray Disk Blu-ray Disk (also known as Blu-ray or BD) is an optical disc storage media format. Its main uses are high-definition video and data storage. The disc has the same physical dimensions as a standard DVD or CD. Its capacity is 25 GB. //

Cloud computing : is a term used to describe services provided over a network by a collection of remote servers.

This abstract "cloud" of computers provides massive, distributed storage and processing power, which can be accessed by any Internetconnected device running a web browser. Below are some common examples of cloud computing you have likely heard of or used.

Google Docs - A fantastic free solution from Google that allows you to open Microsoft Office documents as well as share them with other users with Internet access.

Microsoft OneDrive - Formerly known as SkyDrive, OneDrive is an online storage service for Windows 8 and Windows 10 users to store Windows related files, Office documents, and other files.

Online backup - There are dozens of online backup services to store your important information offsite in the cloud. For example, Mozy and Dropbox are two good examples of cloud storage and online storage backup solutions that store information in the cloud.

Windows Azure - A cloud computing solution by Microsoft that allows companies to develop and run services from their cloud.

Network media Websites - Many popular social networking sites such as Facebook, Picasa,, YouTube and SoundCloud are also often considered parts of cloud computing.

The most common units are the bit , and the byte (or octet), which is equivalent to eight bits.

The smallest unit of measurement of data is the

which can accept two possible values 0 or1 or the capacity of a system which can exist in only two states.



File size :A file size is the measure of space a file takes on a storage medium such as a computer hard drive. File sizes can be measured in bytes (B), kilobytes (KB),megabytes (MB), gigabytes (GB), terabytes (TB), and beyond. In the picture below of files listed in Windows Explorer, the size column has been sorted to show the largest file first. As can be seen, the first file "family-safety.jpg" has a file size of 47 KB. The smallest file in this picture has a file size of 32 KB.

How to find how much hard drive space is available ?

Determining the available hard drive space will vary depending upon the operating system that is currently being used. Below is a listing of various operating systems and the methods of determining how much space is available in that operating system.

Example : Windows 10 users 1. From the Windows Desktop, click the Start button to open the Start menu or press the shortcut keys Windows Key + X to open the Power User Task menu.

2. In the Start menu or Power User Task menu, select File Explorer.

3. In the File Explorer window, on the left navigation pane, click on This PC. 4. After selecting This PC, you will see each drive with a small percentage bar of how much disk space is being used, as well as a description of how much is free and the total disk space. If you need additional information, right-click the drive and selectProperties.

How many MP3's or photos can I put on my flash drive?

The number of songs or photos you can fit on a flash drive depends on several factors:  Size of the flash drive or storage device.  Length of the song or quality of the picture.  Sound quality of the MP3. 

Ultimately, how many songs you can fit will depend on your preference of sound quality of the MP3's. Lower bit rate will result in lower sound quality, but more songs on the flash drive, whereas a higher bit rate will result in higher sound quality but fewer songs on the flash drive.

 Picture (e.g. JPEG and GIF) sizes 

A camera can take a picture in many different file sizes, depending on the quality of the picture and the type of camera that is being used. Therefore, the quantity of pictures a flash drive can store can vary depending on the size of each picture.



Generally speaking, most camera's take pictures that are around 3MB in size. A cell phone camera will typically take a 2-3MB picture at its highest setting, and an SLR camera taking photo's in the RAW format can be as large as 10MB.

Presentation Software Definition - What does Presentation Software mean?

Presentation software is a category of application software that is specifically designed to allow users to create a presentation of ideas by stringing together text, images and audio/video. The presentation tells a story or supports speech or the presentation of information.

1.1 Techopedia explains Presentation Software Presentation software is generally used for creating slideshows that display information. The software has three main components:   

Text editor for inputting and formatting text Facility for inserting graphics and other multimedia files Slideshow system for displaying the content

Before the advent of presentation software, presenters commonly used an easel to hold posters that contained illustrations to support the report or a slide projector to display graphics printed on a transparent plastic film. These methods were inflexible; for example, changing small things in the printed materials used could result in mismatched graphics or illustrations, sometimes requiring redoing the entire thing. With presentation software, not only authoring but also correcting illustrations can be done easily.

Microsoft's PowerPoint one of the best-known commercial presentation software applications in the market.

Starting Microsoft PowerPoint To start Microsoft PowerPoint: 1. Select the Start menu.

2. Select All Programs.

3. Select Microsoft Office.

4. Select Microsoft PowerPoint 2013.

Opening PowerPoint 2013 When you open PowerPoint 2013 for the first time, the Start Screen will appear.

From here, you'll be able to create a new presentation, choose a template, and access your recently edited presentations.

From the Start Screen, locate and select Blank Presentation.

When PowerPoint starts, it opens by default in Normal view. In Normal view, the application window includes the following areas: Slides tab - A pane in the left pane with thumbnail previews of your slides. You can click and drag the thumbnails to rearrange slides.

To insert a new slide: •

Whenever you start a new presentation, it will contain one slide with the Title Slide layout. You can insert as many slides as you need from a variety of layouts.

1. From the Home tab, click the bottom half of the New Slide command.

2. Choose the desired slide layout from the menu that appears.

3. The new slide will appear. Click any placeholder and begin typing to add text. You can also click an icon to add other types of content, such as a picture or a chart.

 Apply and change a theme: To apply a theme: 1‐ the Design tab on the Ribbon, then locate the Themes group. Each image represents a theme.

2‐ Click the More drop‐down arrow to see all available themes.

3‐ Select the desired theme.

Once you've applied a theme, you can also select a variant for that theme from the Variants group.

Variants use different theme colors while preserving a theme's overall look.

Animating Text and Objects: To apply an animation to an object: 1. Select the object you want to animate.

2. On the Animations tab, click the More drop‐down arrow in the Animation group.

3. A drop‐down menu of animation effects will appear. Select the desired effect, A drop‐down menu of animation effects will appear. Select the desired effect 4. The effect will apply to the object. The object will have a small number next to it to show that it has an animation. In the Slide pane, a star symbol also will appear next to the slide.

Effect options :

Some effects will have options you can change. For example, with the Fly In effect you can control which direction the object comes from. These options can be accessed from the Effect Options command in the Animation group. To add multiple animations to an object: • If you select a new animation from the the menu in the Animation group, it will replace the object's current

animation. However, you'll sometimes want to place more than one animation on an object, like an Entrance and an Exit effect. To do this, you'll need to use the Add Animation command, which will allow you to keep your current animations while adding new ones.

1. Select an object.

2. Click the Animations tab.

3. In the Advanced Animation group, click the Add Animation command to view the available animations.

4. Select the desired animation effect. The Animation Pane • The Animation Pane allows you to view and manage all of the effects that are on the current slide. You can modify and reorder effects directly from the Animation Pane, which is especially useful when you have several effects.

• To open the Animation Pane: • From the Animations tab, click the Animation Pane command.

Applying Transitions: 1. Select the desired slide from the Slide Navigation pane. This is the slide that will appear after the transition.

2. Click the Transitions tab, then locate the Transition to This Slide group. By default, None is applied to each slide.

3. Click the More drop‐down arrow to display all transitions.

4. Click a transition to apply it to the selected slide. This will automatically preview the transition.

5. You can use the Apply To All command in the Timing group to apply the same transition to all slides in your presentation.

Keep in mind that this will modify any other transitions you've applied.

To modify the transition effect: You can quickly customize the look of a transition by changing its direction.

1. Select the slide with the transition you want to modify.

2. Click the Effect Options command, and choose the desired option.

3. These options will vary depending on the selected transition.

4. The transition will be modified, and a preview of the transition will appear.  To modify the transition duration: 1. Select the slide with the transition you want to modify.

2. In the Duration field in the Timing group, enter the desired time for the transition. In this example, we'll increase the time to two seconds—or 02.00—to make the transition slower.

 To add sound: 1. Select the slide with the transition you want to modify.

2. Click the Sound drop-down menu in the Timing group.

3. Click a sound to apply it to the selected slide, then preview the transition to hear the sound.

To remove a transition: Select the slide with the transition you want to remove.

Choose None from the Transition to This Slide group. The transition will be removed. ** To remove transitions from all slides, apply the None transition to a slide, then click the Apply to All command.

 Hyperlinks and Action Buttons : •

Hyperlinks have two basic parts: the address of the webpage, email address, or other location they are linking to, and the display text (which can also be a picture or shape).

**To insert a hyperlink: 1. Select the image or text you want to make a hyperlink.

2. Right-click the selected text or image, then click Hyperlink. Alternatively, you can go to the Insert tab and click the Hyperlink command.

3. The Insert Hyperlink dialog box will open. You can also get to this dialog box from the Insert tab by clicking Hyperlink.

4. If you selected text, the words will appear in the Text to display field at the top. You can change this text if you want.

5. Type the address you want to link to in the Address field.

6. Click OK. The text or image you selected will now

be a hyperlink to the web address.

Using shapes and pictures as hyperlinks: Sometimes you might want to to format objects—including shapes, text boxes, and pictures—as hyperlinks.

To insert an action button on one slide: 1. Click the Insert tab.

2. Click the Shapes command in the Illustrations group. A drop‐down menu will appear with the action buttons located at the very bottom.

3. Select the desired action button.

4. Insert the button onto the slide by clicking the desired location.

The Action Settings dialog box will appear.

5. Select the Mouse Click or Mouse Over tab.

6. Selecting the Mouse Click tab means the action button will perform its action only when clicked. Selecting the Mouse Over tab will make the action button perform its action when you move the mouse over it.

7. In the Action on click section, select Hyperlink to: then click the drop‐down arrow and choose an option from the menu.

8. Check the Play Sound box if you want a sound to play when the action button is clicked. Select a sound from the drop‐ down menu, or select Other sound to use a sound file on your computer.

2. Saving sound  Activity 6: Before exiting the application, what should you do? You should save your sound file to preserve it.

Give the name “My_Poem” to your file.  To save a file, you should follow these steps: 1- Select “File” menu 2- Choose “Save Project As…” 3- In the “Save in” zone, select the Local Disc C: 4- Open your folder named “first name and last name” 5- Write the name of your file “My_Poem” in the “file name” zone 6- Click on “Save” button

 Activity 8: What’s the extension of your file “My_Poem”?  Note Any file created by “Audacity” has an “aup” extension.

Indeed, Audacity projects are stored in AUP file, which is a format that has been highly optimized for Audacity so that it can open and save projects quickly.

3. Sound File Formats a- Audacity Project Format (AUP)  Activity 9: Try to open your Audacity project file “My_Poem.aup” by using the “Windows Media Player”.  The file is not recognized by Windows Media Player. So it can’t be opened.

 Activity 10: Double click on your file “My_Poem”. What is the software that is used to open this file?  “Audacity” is the only software used to open Audacity project files.  Note: When you are finished working on a Audacity project and you want to save a file that can be opened by other programs, select one of the export commands from the “File” Menu.

b- WAV (Windows Wave Format)  Activity 11: Open your file “My_Poem.aup” by using “Audacity” and try to export it as a WAV format.

 To export an Audacity project as a WAV, You should follow these steps: 1- Select “File” menu 2- Choose “Export As WAV…” 3- In the “Save in” zone, select the Local Disc C: 4- Open your folder named “first name and last name” 5- Write the name of your file “My_wav_Poem” in the “file name” zone 6- Click on “Save” button  Note: The WAV format is the default uncompressed audio format on Windows, and is supported on almost all computer systems. Audacity can read and write this format.

c- MP3  Activity 12: Open your file “My_Poem.aup” by using “Audacity” and try to export it as an MP3 format.  To export an Audacity project as an MP3, You should follow these steps: 1- Select “File” menu 2- Choose “Export As MP3…”

 Activity 13: Compare the size of the two sound files that you have created: “My_wav_Poem” and “My_mp3_Poem”  The size of the file “My_mp3_Poem” is inferior to the size of the file “My_wav_Poem”.

 Note: MP3 Format is a compressed audio format that is a very popular way to store music. When you create an MP3 file, you are deliberately losing some quality in order to use less disk space.

4- Importing Sound File  Activity 14: After recording your poem, you have to insert the music that will accompany your voice.  To import audio, 1- Select “Project” menu 2- Choose “Import Audio…”

3- In the dialog box, select the Local Disc C 4- Open your folder named “first name and last name” then select

“poem_track” 5- Click on “Open” button  Note:  There are two other ways to do this: 1. Simply drag and drop the audio file into the Audacity window.

2. Use the keyboard shortcut: CTRL+I  Audacity can import WAV, AIFF, AU, MP3 and OGG files.

IV. Elementary treatments : 1- Mixing

 Activity 15: Now, you have a sound file that contains two audio tracks. The first track contains the poem and the second contains the music. Do you know how to mix these two tracks?  To mix these audio tracks, you should follow these steps: 1- Select the two tracks

Basicaly, a protocol is about a standard method used at each end of a communication channel, in order to properly transmit information. In order to deal with your email you must use a mail client to access a mail server. The mail client and mail server can exchange information with each other using a variety of protocols.

IMAP Protocol: IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) – Is a standard protocol for accessing e-mail from your local server. IMAP is a client/server protocol in which e-mail is received and held for you by your Internet server. As this requires only a small data transfer this works well even over a slow connection such as a modem. Only if you request to read a specific email message will it be downloaded from the server.
