WELCOME TO THE UAS CHALLENGE 2021 On behalf of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, I would like to welcome you to the 2021 UAS Challenge fly-off event. The UAS Challenge continues to grow and develop and despite the many challenges we faced this year, we are pleased to have you all here today. Those teams that have not been able to travel to the fly-off event will be missed and we hope to see them next year.

This event represents the culmination of many months of focussed effort from teams in experimenting, designing, building and testing.

I hope that your work on the project has given you an insight into the exciting and rewarding world of aerospace engineering from end to end and the joys of working with people acrossdisciplines. I look forward to witnessing first hand some amazing engineering solutions and hearing well-thought-out business cases. We are in for an incredibly interesting, exciting time at the fly-off event! I wish you the best of luck over the next few days!

The designated Team Leader is responsible for communication with IMechE Officials with regards to the organisation of the event (e.g. Flight line allocations, rules, non-compliances, etc.).

Safety issues should be notified by any member of the team to an IMechE official at the earliest opportunity.

The Team Leader is responsible for getting all members of the team to the correct place at the correct time.

The Team Leader is to notify Schedule Support Officials if any rescheduling of scrutineering, flight times, etc., is required at the earliest opportunity.

Any attempts at sabotaging other team’s equipment will result in instant disqualification.

No alcohol is permitted anywhere on site.

Smoking is only permitted within the designated Smoking Area.

Flying is only permitted under competition control.

System testing the propulsion system with propellers and blades attached is not permitted.

Aircraft should be fully restrained during testing and during flight control initialisation.

Permission must be given before using the RF Transmission frequencies (other than 2.4GHz systems, which can be used continuously).

Please respect the other teams in the competition.

School students may be on site during the competition, therefore please be mindful of appropriate language and behaviour.

All event attendees are to take reasonable care with regard to their own health and safety and of people who might be affected by their acts or omissions.

All team members must complete and bring a copy of the Covid self-assessment form included in your joining instructions.

All attendees should have completed the safety responsibility form and handed it in to the IMechE Safety Manager. This must be done straight after the safety briefing on Tuesday. Failure to present this form to the Scrutineering team will prevent the permit to fly.

All attendees are required to confirm that adequate public liability insurance is in place. Declaration that this cover is in place must be made via a liability waiver form that must be signed at registration.

All attendees must read and follow the BMFA Buckminster site rules in conjunction with the joining instructions for participants.

Foreign Object Debris (FOD) and general waste.

All participants are to keep the BMFA Buckminstyer site tidy and free from rubbish and FOD. All rubbish and FOD must be collected and placed in the relevant bins around the site.

All attendees should respect the BMFA’s neighbours and keep noise on the camp site to a minimum.

All fire evacuation routes, both inside and outside buildings must be kept clear and unobstructed at all times.

If the word is given to evacuate, all attendees should move to the Rendezvous Point using the nearest and safest escape route.

The rendezvous point is right opposite the hangar.

Stay within the designated area of the site.

Access to the controlled flying area will only be permitted through access control. On entry to the controlled flying area, teams will always be supervised by IMechE officials , until exiting through access control.

All event attendees are required to bring their own face masks / face covering and gloves in line with current COVID19 Government guidelines.

WRise - the first team to represent India at the IMechE UAS challenge is returning back to the arena once again with a dual boom penta-rotar hybrid UAV design. We are a diverse group of students specializing in aerospace, avionics, and electronics, ranging from freshmen to undergrads, led by mentors with extensive industrial experience. We aim to contribute our ideas to outshine the current existing technologies for the welfare of humanity.

FliteSquad is team of 13 students from Queen Mary University of London.

Quintessential of the city’s vibrancy, our members bring in experiences from all over the world, blend together by the sense of discovery — of both new engineering and cultures. As a young team in the UAS challenge, our mission is to present our first design.

‘Y Dreigiau Coch’, (The Red Dragons) are an entirely new team of seven students with a variety of backgrounds and interests in engineering. One of the most adventurous features of our fixed-wing UAS solution, has been our decision to double the cargo carrying capacity on-board with the goal to maximise the number of lives we can potentially save in a single flight. We are extremely proud to be representing Wales on a global scale for such forward-thinking technology and innovation.

University of Surrey:

Team Peryton are a group of aerospace and mechanical engineers from the University of Surrey, all with previous UAV design experience. Our aircraft is a twin-engine design carefully balancing mission requirements and risk. With a maximum take-off weight of 10kg, the aircraft has enough power to lift off in twice its own length. Our approach has been to test early with a key focus on manufacturability to ensure we can evolve our design rapidly, allowing the team to be well into our flight test phase.

ANTS Aerial Systems, the team representing Bangladesh, started working on Unmanned Aerial Systems as a University project in their sophomore days with 4 members. QUB Hummingbird is a team of 8 MEng Aerospace Engineering students from The Queen’s University of Belfast. Applying skills developed during our Aircraft Design module and industry placements has allowed us to design and build our UAS. Although competing virtually, we look forward to demonstrating our aircraft’s capabilities through flight testing in Northern Ireland and on the X-Plane platform.

Team NUST Airworks is excited for their 4th run in the IMechE UAS Challenge representing Pakistan. The team comprises electrical and mechanical engineering undergraduates from 1st to 4th year, working in automation, marketing & communications, mechanical and software departments.

We strive to keep challenging ourselves and are experimenting with developing our first tailless BWB aircraft for the UAS Challenge.

Team Aero-Watt from Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh started up this year as a group combined of mechanical engineering and robotics students. We have a common goal to increase interest in aerospace at Heriot-Watt and in our local schools. ARCUS is a small team of final year aerospace students with big dreams for our UAS. We are very excited to build and fly in the demonstration this year as we had feared Covid would cancel everything, but we hope to bring innovation and a good sense of fun to the competition!

UCL Team Nova: Where Drones are Born. Based in London, our diverse group of Mechanical Engineers from across five different nationalities possess a common passion for utilizing innovative technology for social change.

Collaboration and esprit de corps are principal drivers for our team’s progress and innovation this challenging year.

Despite the global pandemic, we’ve had tremendous support from our international partners hailing from Australia, China, Belgium and the UK that have enabled us to bring our autonomous helicopter design to life as it takes to the skies this July.

Team Purple Swans, inspired by our local Swan population to develop a large and gracious UAS. Compromised of engineers ranging from Foundation courses to final year MEng students, our multidisciplinary team, the first to fly for our University, hopes to lay the foundations for future teams to participate and soar high.

We are the DroneTeam Twente, one of the 7 student teams affiliated with the University of Twente. Out of all the Dutch student teams, we are the only drone related team partaking in a competition.

Our team consists of a variety of bachelor and master students with international backgrounds, all with their own role and contribution to the team. In our third year of competing we are focusing on building an aircraft that is modular, 3D printable and reliable.

The Blue Swan team is a tight group of driven engineers striving to develop a revolutionary UAS design. With a flying wing layout, built-in motors and an adaptable payload bays; getting everything to work was particularly tough but thanks to our hard work, creativity, and perseverance we overcame these challenges and made a beautiful aircraft as a result. Our team’s culture is that of internationality spanning several countries including Turkey, Greece, France and The United Kingdom.

This internationality helps us share and develop our ideas leading to new innovative solution along our journey in building our drone. We are currently based in Swansea University and this year will mark our second time being a part of the amazing event that is the IMechE UAS challenge. We are a team of more than 20 passionate students from the department of Aeronautics at Imperial College London, including students from every year of the MEng degree and doctoral research students. We are all united by the passion of flying machines and drones. After a tough year of designing, we are eager to see our creation fly amongst the other team’s entries. The team, which is 5 years old now, has participated twice in the competition and has many fond memories of the event. For the second time after the first participation in 2018, Team Mora Avions is participating in the UAS Challenge Virtual Competition in 2021. UAS Challenge Rules Writer MARTIN SOLTAU Martin leads the space business for Frazer-Nash Consultancy, and chairs the Space Energy Initiative, which is seeking to develop Space Based Solar Power.

Previously, he was Head of Programmes for Smiths Aerospace, and has enjoyed a varied career in aerospace engineering, working for both small start-ups and large blue chip companies. He holds a Private Pilot’s Licence, and is a Chartered Engineer and Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. Martin is a founder member of the UAS Challenge organising committee, and leads the development of the rules.

UAS Challenge Head Scrutineer ROD WILLIAMS Rod Williams has been a Principal Consultant in the Aerospace Systems team at Frazer-Nash since 2016. Sponsored by the Army for a Mechanical Engineering degree at Manchester University, he has 29 years’ experience as an Aircraft Engineer, 24 as a Chartered Engineer and has been a Fellow of the IMechE since 2008.

He was the Army’s Chief Aircraft Engineer for 4 years, and was part of the Safety and Risk team for the Bloodhound SSC. He is currently involved in re-writing the MoD’s Type Certification standards and developing military Continuing Airworthiness Management assurance procedures.

A member of the IMechE’s Aeronautical Division Board, Rod has been the Chief Scrutineer for the IMechE’s UAS Challenge since its inauguration in 2014. His role is to oversee the pre-flight engineering and airworthiness assessment of all UAS entering the event and he is a member of the Safety Committee for the competition.

UAS Challenge Project Manager KRISTINA LINDON I am the UAS Challenge Steering Group Lead Project Manager, responsible for managing both the virtual and live test flight events.

I first begin my journey with the IMechE UAS challenge back in 2016 when I competed as a student during my Masters of Aerospace Engineering degree.

The skills and passion for UAS that developed during this competition have proven essential to shaping my career and were key to providing me with the confidence and understanding needed to excel in my engineering career as part of the Military Aviation Authority within the MoD.

IMechE Member Operations Director JOANNA HORTON Joanna has worked in the charity sector for over 25 years focusing on volunteer relations; membership development; diversity and inclusion and international development. She is a member of IMechE’s senior leadership team; as Member Operations Director, she is responsible for the delivery of volunteer support, member facing services and enhancing the member experience globally.

An events professional for nigh on 15 years, Rob has spent his entire career to date working with subject matter experts to produce exceptional programmes and create meaningful networking opportunities. He has applied the same approach to his recently acquired Member Engagement brief and he and his team are in the process of improving the volunteer experience and empowering the IMechE’s member communities to deliver exceptional results.

IMechE Aerospace Division Chair ANDREW BRADLEY Andrew Bradley is a Chartered Engineer, a Fellow of both the Institute of Mechanical Engineers and of the Royal Aeronautical Society. Andrew has recently retired from Rolls-Royce where he was an Associate Fellow in gas turbine design and was Project Chief Design Engineer for several engines including technology demonstrators. He is currently Chair of the IMechE Aerospace Board and from the middle of 2020 he has been part of the IMechE Covid-19 Task Force.

UAS Challenge Head Judge LAMBERT DOPPING-HERPENSTAL Lambert, FREng, is a Systems Engineer by background currently supporting various voluntary projects for the Royal Academy of Engineering, the IET, the IMechE and the Royal Aeronautical Society. Until his retirement in 2013, he had worked for BAE Systems and its predecessor companies for 41 years, finally as Engineering Director Systems and Strategy for Military Aircraft & Information. He was a systems design engineer on Hawk, Sea Harrier and Harrier II and managed the systems development of Tornado and Typhoon before running the Military Aircraft research programmes. Following the formation of BAE Systems, he moved to its centre as Corporate Technology Director. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2007. He is a graduate of the University of Surrey in Electrical and Electronic Engineering and is a Fellow of the IET and the Royal Aeronautical Society.

President of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers PETER FLINN Peter Flinn is the 2021/22 President of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

He is a chartered engineer who studied mechanical sciences at the University of Cambridge. He also holds an MBA and attended the international senior management programme at Harvard Business School. He has worked mainly in manufacturing industry in the aircraft, rail, commercial vehicle and process industries.

He started his career with the military aircraft division of what is now BAE Systems on projects such as the Anglo-French Jaguar.

His most recent industrial role was as MD of Vectra Group Limited, an engineering consultancy specialising in safety work for hazardous industries.

He is an active member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, has been chairman of its Manufacturing Industries Division and the main point of contact for TMMX. He was also chairman of the Intelligent Automation centre at Loughborough University between 2012 and 2017.

UAS Challenge Chair PAUL LLOYD Air Vice-Marshal Paul Lloyd CBE has been an Engineer Officer in the RAF for nearly 30 years, where he has worked on various aircraft types at home and on operations.

Currently Chief of Staff for Support and the RAF’s Chief Engineer, he is responsible for all aspects of engineering, logistics, digital and infrastructure for the RAF. Also very active within the IMechE, he has previously been the Chair of the IMechE’s Aerospace Division and has lead on organising and delivering the UAS Challenge since its inception.
