hen this visionary couple imagined the home of their dreams, and put together a skilled team to build it, the dwelling promised to be truly special. Building their new home was quite an undertaking, but for these homeowners, it was a pleasure. The centerpiece of the space – the large island whose structure is reminiscent of the dining room columns. It’s another repetitive detail that anchors the cohesive design. More decorative details complete the space -- arabesque tiles on the backsplash, gold hardware and lighting and the white range hood. They all allude to the graceful elegance of a European kitchen.

The showstopper: a drop dead gorgeous light fixture with an unexpectedly chic twist to the plush space. The luxury of the bedroom extends into the master bath. A mixture of tile sizes, shapes and colors were skillfully combined to create a glamorous feel. Mosaic glass tiles cascade down the wall onto the deck of the jetted tub, adding dimension to the spa like space. Wall-to-wall mirrors add sparkle and brighten the room, while brushed gold and glass sconces hung directly on the mirrors add a jewel-like touch to his and hers vanities.

Guests are right at home in the main floor bedroom. The upholstered headboard is inspired by a classic design and helps to create a sumptuous feel. At the foot of the bed, there is an upholstered storage bench. Mirrored night stands with delicate details bring a romantic feel to the space. The retreat is a welcoming space that anyone would feel at home in. The stone fireplace provides warmth as the weather turns cool, and the large TV can be seen from the pool or enjoyed from the cozy seating area.

The finishing touches were given foremost attention, and it’s nothing short of amazing how she managed to unify the design from room-to-room with repeated elements. The owners filled the home with light and bright space to be the backdrop for living as their everyday life unfolds.

Cabinet hardware may be one of the final details you choose, but it can be one of the most important. Aesthetically, they are the jewelry for cabinetry. They should be goodlooking and work with the design, but also feel good in the hand. Touch it, feel it, make sure it fits your hand. Knobs or pulls? That’s the question! Knobs are most often used on cabinet doors, and pulls for drawers. If you have a larger pantry door or pull-out door, then use a pull. Brushed nickel, chrome, bronze or gold? Metals add sparkle and impact the design. If you want a serene and pulled together design, then choosing metals that match is a great way to achieve that look. If you’re looking for something that is more carefree and distinctive, then don’t be afraid to mix metals. It’s okay to pair tones that work well together. When you choose your hardware well, you can make the most ordinary cabinets look high end, and you’ll elevate the finished design.

The moment you step through the door, the colors and rich wood tones envelope you in warmth. There is a noticeable interplay of dark, earthy tones and light, airy elements working together in this home. Hand-scraped floors and trim throughout the main level have dark stain which serves as a handsome foil for the natural light from the many windows and taupe wall color. The tranquil owner’s suite is a representation of the whole house. The curves in the bedroom furnishings are repeated in the barrel vault of the ceiling. Cindy chose a beautiful wallpaper to add a designer touch to this already striking architectural element. The large expanse of windows overlooks the wooded property, and window coverings are layered to provide privacy. Like the rest of the home, this space is a comfortable retreat and is all about unwinding. As the parents of three children, Cindy and Jon made relaxation a priority. Their bedroom and bathroom is an oasis, with a huge walk-in shower, generous soaking tub, and ample his and hers vanity space. The suite’s earthy color palette extends to the creative combination of tiles used in the shower, flooring and tub deck. A variety of sizes are artfully combined to convey modern elegance and an enviable bathing environment. WWW.CAPITALLIFESTYLES.NET

Cindy wanted their new home to make life simpler, where she could meld home, fun and family in a memorable way. They had done an extensive remodel on their previous home with the help of Shannon Block, so there was never a question of who would build their forever home. He was so patient and worked to build a “unique” home that reflects the Juckette’s…not the trends. Aside from comfort and function--they wanted their home to stand out, to be hospitable and welcoming, to be different than their friends and neighbors…to reflect who they are. “We wanted to build a dream house that would always be a place our kids would love to come home to,” Cindy says. “We thought of how our family loves to entertain and spend time doing activities together.” With beauty, fun and comfort built right in, Cindy and Jon will never want to be anywhere else.

closets For many of us, our closets are simply a place to store our wardrobes. They are tucked away from sight and are purely functional, uninspiring spaces. EASIER. ORGANIZED. LESS STRESSFUL.

SPACE TO BE PROUD OF.

A great closet starts with a great design. When you use a professional, who has extensive knowledge of efficient closet space planning, you’ll end up with a closet that will store more than just hanging clothes. Everything from shoes to ties to handbags will have a place. It’s easier to stay organized, and it’s less stressful choosing what to wear. Not only that, but a great closet will increase your home’s value.

The options are endless in a custom closet. A closet can be so much more than just a place to hang clothes on a rod and then quickly close the door. It can be a place you are proud to have in your home. A place where you start and end your day and decide how you will present yourself to the world.

l

iving in the country – inviting and relaxed, at one with your surroundings, a celebration of warmth and comfort, a home for every season—is something Kristin and Troy Stegeman had long dreamed of. One day, they were out driving and saw a for sale sign. As they drove back to explore the land, a feeling of excitement came over them. They knew they had finally found the acreage they wanted, and it was just minutes from town. The location was perfect. It was in close proximity to school in order for the children to participate in activities. Keeping up with the schedules of

seven children keeps them busy, but this location is perfect for their family. She and her husband have had a lifelong love of the outdoors, and they wanted their children to enjoy all that it has to offer. Their new family home brings together the best of both worlds. After picking the site, the Stegeman’s found a floorplan they liked, but it needed modifications. With the help of Kristin Schroeder and Jim McMichael, they were able to modify the home design in order to accommodate their large family.

They have plenty of room to gather in the spacious open family room and kitchen. There is an instant feeling of light and air. Kristin chose the color palette after seeing the McMichael Realty office. She fell in love with the gray color, and 82 |

she used it throughout their living spaces. Their expansive windows, dark hardwood floors and dramatic ceiling height combine to create a unified design in the spacious home.

The entry hall leading to the family room features custom wainscoting. One of her favorite accents is the ceiling which is clad in old barn wood. It adds even more character to this transition space. An open staircase leads to the upstairs bedrooms. The open balcony overlooks the family room, and the view is especially good from that vantage point.

Their builder, Rob Deppe, suggested the intricate wood moldings for the windows and fireplace. He actually took a marker and drew his vision of the trim design on the walls, so they could see what it would look like. They were painted the same color as the island and emphasize the quality millwork and sheer size of the room. The warmth of wood and stone combine to enhance the fireplace wall. It is a breathtaking focal point for the home. WWW.CAPITALLIFESTYLES.NET

Kristin at LaBelle was instrumental in re-thinking the kitchen. “She is great at what she does, and she helped us reconfigure the kitchen,” said Kristin. “She had a feeling for what I would like, and it couldn’t have worked out better!” It is important when you have 7 children that the kitchen functions at its best. Her favorite thing in the kitchen is the island. Everyone can gather around, and it provides much needed storage. There is enough room for everyone to fit. Just because function was important, design was never sacrificed. They chose a classic white and grey color palette. The white perimeter cabinets have a grey glaze, and the island is a dark graphite grey. They choose oil rubbed bronze hardware, and the beautiful tones add warmth to the grey color scheme. The huge pantry has plenty of space to store all their provisions.

Its seamless look doesn’t impose on the kitchen, and it is easy for everyone to access their favorite snacks. Distinctive columns with stone accents are a striking design element that worked out perfectly to define the kitchen and serve as structure for the second floor. The dining area shows more of the attention to detail that is the hallmark of the home. Each of the large windows features custom millwork designed to echo that of the fireplace. The scale of the windows and trim has commanding presence that is perfectly suited to showcase the beautiful view. The modern country design of the dining furnishings is just what you’d expect.

The huge windows were suggested by Jim at J&S Windows. They showcase their beautiful property, giving you a feeling that you are always surrounded by nature. Kristin is really looking forward to their first snowfall in the house. It will surely feel like they are in a huge snow globe! Pre-planning was key to the success of their building experience. They spent time making sure they had the design details

covered before they even found their builder. Working with the team of craftsmen was an enjoyable collaborative effort. She talked about what she wanted, and they listened. It’s so easy to come home to their little slice of country. It’s a little romantic; a little nostalgic; and all about the simple pleasures that being together as a family provides. It feels like they belong here.

The modern and highly technologically advanced world that we live in has given us quite a few amazing conveniences over the years, one of my personal favorites is the ability to instantly download or stream hours of entertainment! But still, have you ever found yourself browsing through countless selections on Netflix and never being quite sure that what you're about to watch warrants the supposed four-and-a-half star rating the viewers gave it? If you have, look no further because the Collective Critic is here to give you some of my picks for great original content currently available for streaming to keep you entertained as the summer movie season winds down!

No more lengthy introductions . . .

The local connection we enjoy with the Lake of the Ozarks brings a natural connection to this fantastic crime series some may say is the Midwest's answer to Breaking Bad! Actor Jason Bateman portrays a steadfast family man who moves his family away from the big city of Chicago to the calm and tranquil Missouri Ozarks for a nice change of pace...as well as a chance to launder enough money to pay off a ruthless Mexican Cartel boss! Lies, betrayal, guns, and cold hard cash, what more can any crime saga junkie want after the lights go down and the kiddos have been put to bed!?

Speaking of spectacular crime stories, how about one loosely based on a true story about the life of Pablo Escobar, and the hunt to capture the largest and most intimidating Colombian drug lord in history! As the demand for high-class narcotics grew in 1980s America, the DEA as well as every major law enforcement network were hard at work trying to stop the flow of drugs across the border, as well as bring justice down on a ruthless criminal who in turn presents his own code of ethics, and refuses to go down quietly. This is a series that is a ballet of blood, bullets, and brawn that I fell in love with from the first episode and if you love crime stories that deliver a gigantic slice of Scarface, then this should be added to your list immediately!

Fans of the cult favorite TV series have every reason to rejoice as Netflix resurrects the hilarious and endearing B-movie riffing series that holds a special place in every nostalgic fanboy's heart. Poor blue-collar space citizen Johan is captured by an evil corporate entity and forced to live out his remaining days in his ship with his robot best friends watching some of the most atrocious sci-fi and horror flicks humanity dished out in the primitive years past! With consistently hilarious jokes, bright and colorful characters, delightfully cheesy sets, and even some legitimately insightful satire, this is the rare reboot that manages to create its own flavor while sticking to the formula that made its predecessor so great!

WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU SHOPPED YOUR INSURANCE? You might be missing significant savings. Or enough protection. One of the most popular book series for young adults has finally been given the treatment it deserves with this charmingly off-kilter and deadpan dark comedy show that will keep fans in stitches. The adventures of the Baudelaire Orphans are brought to vivid life with equal parts humor, fantasy, and edge that while seemingly trying too hard to remain faithful to the books nevertheless entertains both the younger and older sets. With blood-sucking leaches, reptile zoos, and wood mills that only serve their employees gum for lunch, this is one miserable and depressing series that will never cease to bring a smile to your face!

Guillermo Del Toro, the mastermind behind such works as Hellboy, Pacific Rim, and Crimson Peak, takes a shot at delivering a tale of fantasy that the whole family can enjoy! A young man who comes across a strange mystical amulet which grants him a suit of armor and a glowing magical sword discovers that he is The Trollhunter, a warrior chosen by the magic of Merlin himself to vanquish evil trolls and preserve peace in the realm of mankind. If your kids love popular shows like Gravity Falls, Steven Universe, or Adventure Time, this is a sure-fire winner for them that will even keep the adults in the room curious to see what will come next!

Hands down one of the most thoughtprovoking and downright terrifying shows that online television has ever released! This Twilight Zone-inspired series presents a collection of disconnected stories depicting a satirical look at the benefits modern technology can give, as well as the horrors it could spiral us into if we use it the wrong way! Video memory implants, sinister talent competitions, and even a cartoon politician make this a series not to be missed for those constantly wary of those reliable little devices we use to run our everyday lives... It’s the

perfect combination of salvaged treasures and hand-picked antiques. Susie’s journey to collecting treasures for her charming farmhouse home began long ago, and has taken her to estate sales, antiques shops, behind the shed finds and forgotten treasures. She was a stay at home mom and had to be creative with her decorating. She mixes rustic woods and metals to achieve the farmhouse style which she perfected long before it became the huge design trend it is today. This was our second visit to this charming farmhouse. We knew it would be a Christmas home that would spur memories and rekindle special feelings.

For her mantle, Susie draped greenery on the roughhewn wood mantle to create a natural backdrop for one of her favorite original pieces of art, a pair of lanterns and Santa figures. The simple grouping contributes to the cozy, country feel. As she decorates, she takes a few steps back to see if anything needs to be added or removed.

The kitchen and dining area adjoin the family room. There’s no room in the house that’s more them. Look around a little, and you’ll notice Christmas is tucked into and around day-to-day elements tying the whole room together. A pretty little red barn that Gary made for her is placed in the display niche. They enjoy the view through the oversized windows that make them feel like they’re outside and inside at the same time. It is full of warm finishes and even warmer memories; the kitchen is a hug from an old friend.

She and her husband have a “man-barn" space that is often used for large family gatherings. They cut the cedar tree on their property, and it almost touches the ceiling. Lake House

Fishing, boating, swimming and sharing great food cooked outdoors‌.memories of fun at the Lake last a lifetime. When the Werner’s first found their ideal property on 2-acres at the Lake, it had that vintage lake charm that Karen was looking for. The history and the heritage appealed to her. As she started to make plans to bring the property up to current standards, they began running into challenges with the existing structure. Numerous professionals were consulted, and the list of repairs grew.

Transform raw wood into Beautiful DESIGNS

They eventually realized that a remodel wasn’t going to be practical. They decided they would have to start fresh in order to transform the property into the ultimate get-away they envisioned, but it was important to them to bear evidence to old lake connections and hold on to the vintage feel the original lake home offered. The Werner’s teamed up with old friends and skilled craftsmen Ed and Kathy Mueller with Up a Creek in Style. They knew they would have a chance to get creative on this project. They were always open to thinking outside the box. Karen comes up with the ideas, and Ed and Kathy are able to transform raw wood into beautiful designs. This was a dream project for everyone, and they were able to explore things that don’t occur every day. It was a real pleasure and a challenge.

In the kitchen the team mixed granite, wood and metal elements to achieve a particular design to create a unique space. Sleek cabinetry and stainless-steel appliances make a modern statement on the perimeter of the kitchen. Standing in contrast, the huge s-shaped kitchen island is a blend of granite, tongue and groove wood and solid slabs of catalpa wood. A pebbled tile is used on the floor to accent the curves, while rugged barn doors bring in even more texture.

Playful Design A contemporary front door leads you into the entry, and you immediately know you’re in for something special. The generous use of natural wood, stone, metal and large beams begin a playful design that will carry through the rest of the home. Wood tile flows throughout; it’s both a practical and beautiful choice for a lake home.

The entry has many special features; a beautiful granite medallion; a wrought iron stairway with one-of-a-kind catalpa wood insets; and an accent wall made from slices of catalpa wood. In order to get a seamless look, they used black steel for the background, and stainless-steel mirrors were cut and placed behind each of the wood slices. WWW.CAPITALLIFESTYLES.NET

The main level is open from the front to back. The nearby family room calls for you to come in, take your flip flops off and relax on the comfy furniture. You wouldn’t be at the lake without a nod to its massive presence. Karen commissioned a statement piece of artwork that shows where the home is located on the lake. Original barn doors act as a decorative element when open, but when they’re closed, the living room turns into another bedroom. The flexible use of space is convenient when the other eight bedrooms just aren’t enough.

The vintage storefront features fish signs and gives a nostalgic nod to days gone by. Kathy found the other signs at Forever Friends Antique Shop. This was an immense design process, and she couldn’t have done it without Ed and Kathy. “We do many things on the fly. An idea will be thrown out, and they make it happen. We have the most fun working together,” Karen says. Unique one-of-a-kind items are found around every corner. A pair of Adirondack style chairs fashioned from old water skis flank the fireplace. These personality pieces make Lake Time a treasured experience.

Of course, there is a full kitchen! They used the same clean lined cabinetry and paired it with barn wood, and they used a blend of different granites. Brad made the innovative light fixture over the island. The rugged look of the natural materials is balanced with the contemporary lines of the cabinetry and the sparkle of the stainless-steel appliances. Instead of a tile backsplash, they selected a beautiful portion of a slab and ran it up the wall behind the stove. The result is stunning. Every amenity was considered and built in, including a generous sized coffee bar which was added to a transitional space at the bottom of the stairs.

This vacation home is a place to bring everyone together, so they needed bedrooms! …eight of them and each have their own distinctive design. Karen wanted “artwork” to be the focal point in each room. Karen’s artwork is translated into distinctive designs that function as headboards and are naturally beautiful.

She and her husband, Brad, collaborated to imagine the individual designs and different wood treatments which were to be used. To the homeowners, the walls are a blank canvas where the wood paints its own special type of movement. Natural wood species reveal the uniqueness in each bedroom. One features catalpa wood slabs which fill the entire room height and then runs up onto the ceiling. Planks of wood were charred to create a more industrial feel in the next bedroom. Down the hall, there are hundreds of pieces of wood patiently applied to the wall; one interpretation uses a colorful assortment of found wood; in another they’ve applied wood at an angle; and in the next, they’ve used skinny pieces of wood. Pilings were used in another room for both the bed and nightstands. A collection of wood oars gives a nod to fun on the lake! It’s important to take note of all of the small details that were chosen to support the design choices in each bedroom.

Drift off & RELAX

It takes a creative eye to envision a different design for so many bedrooms and baths. Every bedroom has its own bathroom. Just as the beauty of the wood defines each bedroom’s character, granite defines the bathrooms. The movement and colors combine making it easy to drift off and relax.

Extraordinary living areas were brought into this project to turn the exterior areas into premium outdoor living spaces. Facing the lake, there is a covered patio, which they transformed into a larger, open-sided porch, under a vaulted, tongue and groove wood ceiling, with generous room for outdoor tables and chairs. The porch roof rests on beams that run from the house to large, dark finished, columns. The deck and patio span the entire length of the house, giving a space to retreat from the sun on hot days. The decks have a wideopen view of the lake, and the winding walkway meanders out to the docks. On the side 136 |

of the walkway, just before the waterfront, is a sandy beach and firepit. The design is an amazing blend of beautiful patios, decks, walkways, docks, sitting areas and play space. “We spend a ton of time outdoors enjoying all the lake has to offer,” Karen added. Vacation homes are special places where we spend precious time. The care and craftsmanship that went into creating their unique getaway is the backdrop for a collective history. They’ve invoked the heritage of the previous owners by including vintage

photos in the décor. Perhaps, even more important than the physical characteristics of the home is the imprint that the people who crafted it and the families who occupy it leave behind. Memories will be made, and stories will be told and retold as their ever-expanding families come together year after year. Time is a funny thing when you’re at the lake. While it can’t be stopped, maybe it can slow down a bit.

CAPITAL LIFESTYLES ï‚š FALL 2017

Starting over doesn't have to mean starting "all" the way over. Sure a blank canvas is nice, so you can have it exactly the way you want it. But, then there are times you say "if it’s not broke why fix it?” This was one of those kinds of projects. This backyard had the beginnings of something great. It just needed a little “facelift”. The homeowners didn’t want to scrap the pool area completely and start over. They came to Stockman Landscaping for help to create an area that provided more functionality with the look of high end finishes. The goal was to utilize the overall existing layout and expand some key areas. By giving some features a facelift and replacing some materials with newer, high quality materials, it was much easier on the pocket book than ripping everything out and starting over. Replacing the old white metal fencing with a unique concrete fencing system, called Pillister, was the best way to provide privacy but still give the feeling of openness. The Pillister fencing was installed to provide high quality functionality with an old world feel. Prior to the remodel, the pool patio lacked the space to entertain and enjoy the outdoors. We expanded the area with a new paver patio large enough for the homeowners to gather around the fire pit. The patio now has ample space for lounge chairs perfect for sunbathing or relaxing in the cool summer breeze.

A large outdoor fireplace was added along with landscape lighting to extend the enjoyment of the space from the hot summer nights well into the cool fall evenings. Adding these features enables the homeowners to enjoy the space for most of the year. The patio was completed with a fresh look for the hot tub pergola and some updated plants and shrubs. Building a large hardscape area can leave the 140 |

space looking stark and massive. To soften the look, additional planter beds, shrubs, plants, and décor were used. The pool equipment was just outside the pool area but looked out of place and unsightly. To disguise it without incurring the expense of an equipment building, the homeowners opted to have an area similar to the hot tub area near the pool. From a distance, it appears to be another

entertaining space blending in with the whole look of the new backyard space. This backyard is a beautiful example of how to take a large space and create a few new usable spaces making it much more functional and enjoyable. The outdoors are an extension of your home – making it fit your lifestyle is key to providing maximum enjoyment and relaxation. We’re outside!
