L’arbre généalogique Bonjour cher ami, Tu as choisi de travailler à partir d’un thème; l’arbre. Tu allies ainsi clairement le sacré à l’art. L’arbre fut la base architecturale des lieux de culte. Le cyprès serait à l’origine du clocher et le palmier à l’origine du minaret... Les arbres portent la mémoire et résistent à la disparition. L’arbre de la vie, l’arbre qui fut, selon le monothéisme, la cause de la chute d’Adam et Eve. C’est autour de l’arbre que s’organise la vie et que la flore vient à l’existence. Il est ainsi le pivot, l’axe autour duquel viennent les plantes comme pour se prosterner et prier autour de lui. Il reste dressé et renseigne ainsi les humains sur le cycle de la vie. Les saisons de par leur heurs et malheurs se traduisent sur la robe de l’arbre. Il pénètre dans le sol et atteint ainsi la matrice nourricière de la terre, mais s’élève aussi et tend à atteindre les cieux là où se tiennent les divinités silencieuses et pensives.

L’arbre rassemble, contient et retient en son sein. En Afrique c’est sous la protection de l’arbre à palabre que se tiennent et se prennent les décisions les plus importantes. Sous la majesté du baobab se règlent les contentieux, se tiennent les veillées qui transmettent la connaissance des anciens aux générations nouvelles. A l’ombre de l’arbre à palabre se tisse l’histoire au gré des soirées et des saisons sous le regard bienveillant des astres lumineux. L’arbre règle le souffle de notre temps et rassemble en lui les quatre éléments de notre nature : L’arbre vit d’eau, d’air et de terre et il donne le bois pour le Feu. Tu me dis que c’est la première fois que tu poses un concept avant le travail. Non tu as toujours travaillé comme ça. Ton travail a toujours été à la limite du moderne et du contemporain. Certes tu donnais libre cours à ta main et à ton imagination au moment de l’esquisse mais le fait même de regarder, de tenir compte de l’espace avant de l’entamer, de le projeter sur un papier, comme je t’ai déjà vu faire en 1981 à Berrechid, fait que tu étais toujours attaché au concept.

Rien n’excluait le fait que dés lors que ta main se mettait à tracer les premiers balbutiements du projet ton inconscient rentre en jeu en livrant aussi ton acquis ancestral.

Mais je te le concède aujourd’hui il s’agit d’une nouvelle expérience. Non seulement du point de vue du contenu, ni de la thématique mais bel et bien au niveau de la philosophie de ton travail. En inversant ta vague et en rappelant la thématique de l’arbre, tu reposes le problème de la peinture abstraite à ta manière. Je n’ai nullement besoin de te rappeler Piet Mondrian et l’histoire de son arbre. Seulement, Mondrian le faisait pour abstraire le code, le paradigme des objets, des choses bref du monde, et toi tu reviens sur cette racine pour rhabiller le monde, lui redonner cette enveloppe poétique qu’il a perdue depuis son engagement dans une course effrénée d’auto réduction appauvrissante. Je n’étais pas surpris de te voir revenir sur la racine de l’abstraction pour inaugurer une nouvelle phase de ton travail. C’est le propre des artistes et des philosophes. Au bout d’une longue carrière et afin d’opérer une refonte totale ils se tiennent dans une halte sur le parcours et ils jettent ce regard sage sur les racines de leur propre pratique.

Dans ce travail tu mets amplement le pied dans l’art contemporain sans lâcher tes interrogations primordiales. Tu reviens vers la racine de la pratique mais aussi vers la racine de l’histoire et donc de l’existence. Tu rhabilles les arbres (le Monde) en les affublant de noms hautement symboliques.

Tu vas à la recherche de la généalogie de la magnificence mais aussi à l’origine de l’expression artistique. Tu rejoins ainsi Ibn Arabi dans une de des mythologies qu’il n’avait jamais cessé de construire à travers son illustre ouvrage Les Futuhat Mecquoises : « Sache que Dieu le Très Haut quand il a créé Adam -que le Salut soit sur lui-, et Il en fit l’origine des corps humains, il lui resta un ferment d’argile. De ce surplus, il créa d’abord le palmier (le palmier est féminin en arabe), il est notre tante paternelle, c’est une sœur à Adam » ? Tu t’appropries, me semble-t-il, ce geste plastique primordial de la transformation de la matière, de l’origine commune que nous partageons avec ce noble arbre, le palmier, et tu nommes ainsi le monde à ta manière.

Biography Mohamed Melehi was born in 1936 in Assilah, Morocco.

He currently lives and works between Marrakech and Tangier.

Mohamed Melehi began his art studies at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Tetouan in 1953, and then continued at the Beaux Arts in Seville, the Santa Isabel Academy of Hungary (1955-1956), the San Fernando Academy in Madrid (19561957) and at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Rome (19571960). In 1960, he joined the engraving section of the Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and in 1962 he became a lecturer at the Minneapolis School of Art, United States.

From 1962 to 1964 he lived in New York, where he benefited from the very prestigious Rockefeller Foundation and Columbia University grants. In 1963, he participated in the Formalists group exhibition at the Washington Gallery of Modern Art, DC, with about sixty artists including Piet Mondrian, Jean Arp, Frank Stella.

Back in Morocco, he taught from 1964 to 1969 painting, sculpture and photography at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Casablanca.

In the 1960s, he collaborated with the poets Abdellatif Laâbi and Mostafa Nissabouri for the creation of the magazine « Souffles ».

In 1968, he created a monumental sculpture for the Olympic Games in Mexico City.

In 1969, with his fellow professors at the Ecole des BeauxArts in Casablanca, he organized the famous exhibition of the Jemaa El Fna Square, in Marrakesh, which would mark the history of art in Morocco.

He founded in 1972, with Toni Maraini, Tahar Benjelloun and Mostafa Nissabouri, the artistic and literary journal « Intégral ».

He is also the co-founder of the Cultural “Moussem” of Assilah and president of the Moroccan Association of Plastic Arts (AMAP).

Individual exhibitions From 1985 to 1992, he served as Chief of Staff and Director of Arts at the Ministry of Culture.

From 1988 to 1992 he was Commissioner of the Moroccan Pavilion at the World Expo in Seville.

From 1999 to 2002 he was cultural advisor to the Department of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation.

In 2008, he was decorated by His Majesty Mohammed VI in the Order of Merit.

In 2011, « Pulsation » (New York), a 1964 creation, was added to the prestigious collection of Beaubourg in the museum’s program of opening to non-western scenes.

Mohamed Melehi is one of the masters of Moroccan modern painting. By the frankness of its forms and its colors, his art is similar to the “Hard Edge” painting, an important artistic movement of the period, characterized by a division of the surface of the canvas into colored planes with clearly defined edges.

An artist with an acute contemporary consciousness, he aspires to “lead the work more toward the concept than toward the craft.”

Alongside his paintings, Mohamed Melehi executed numerous commissions associated with architects. The first who asked for his collaboration, among others, are: Abdeslem Faraoui and Patrice de Mazières.

In 2012, Mohamed Melehi saw one of his works sold at auction at Christie’s, Dubai.

In 2013, the prestigious Georges Pompidou Museum and MAMAC museum of Nice requested his works in group exhibitions, thus giving for the first time, the opportunity for an artist of the Arab world to expose alongside the greatest international artists.

‫لقد اخرتت اأن ت�صتغل انطالقا من تيمة؛ ال�صجرة‪ .‬هكذا تكون قد و�صعت‬ ‫اليد على اأقد�س ما يف الفن‪ .‬فقد �صكلت ال�صجرة على الدوام القاعدة املعمارية‬ ‫لأماكن العبادة‪ .‬فقد كانت �صجرة ال�صرو اأ�صال لربج الكني�صة والنخلة اأ�صال‬ ‫للمئذنة‪ ...‬فالأ�صجال تتقلد الذاكرة وتقاوم الندثار‪ .‬اإنها �صجرة احلياة‪� ،‬صجرة‬ ‫كانت ‪ -‬ح�صب التوحيد ‪� -‬صبب نزول اآدم وحواء‪ .‬فحول ال�صجرة تتجذر‬ ‫احلياة لتجود على الأر�س ب ُع�صب الوجود‪ .‬فهي بذلك املرتكز و القطب الذي‬ ‫حتج اإليه الأع�صاب �صاجدة خا�صعة له‪ .‬تظل �صاخمة تلقن الإن�صان دورة احلياة‪.‬‬ ‫تف�صح الف�صول عن �صعادتها وتعا�صاتها برداء ال�صجرة‪ .‬تلج الأر�س و ت�صامق‬ ‫ال�صماوات حيث تركن الآلهة يف تاأملها ال�صامت‪.‬‬ ‫ال�صجرة توحد‪ ،‬حتوي وتخزن يف ح�صنها‪ .‬يف اإفريقيا تتخذ القرارات الهامة‬ ‫برعاية من �صجرة احلكي‪ .‬يذيب الأهايل خالفاتهم حتت �صجرة باووباب‬ ‫املهيبة كما يحر�صون على نقل معارف الأقدمني اإىل الأجيال اجلديدة‪ .‬حتت‬ ‫ظالل �صجرة احلكي الوارف تن�صج الق�ص�س رغبة امل�صاءات والف�صول على‬ ‫مراأى من وهج النجوم‪ .‬فال�صجرة ت�صبط اإيقاع اأنفا�س الزمن و تخزن يف ثناياه‬ ‫العنا�صر الأربعة لطبيعتنا‪ :‬فال�صجرة باملاء و الهواء و الرتبة حتيا‪ ،‬و متنح اخل�صب‬ ‫والنار‪.‬‬ ‫تقول يل اإنها املرة الأوىل التي ت�صع فيها ت�صورا قبل ال�صروع يف العمل‪ .‬كال‪،‬‬ ‫فقد ا�صتغلت دائما على هذا املنوال‪ .‬عملك مذ كان وهو يف متا�س مع اأقا�صي‬ ‫احلديث واملعا�صر‪ .‬ل �صك اأنك كنت تعطي مطلق احلرية ليدك وملخيلتك يف‬ ‫التخطيط الأويل‪ ،‬بيد اأن جمرد تاأملك للف�صاء و مراعاته قبل اأن تبا�صر طرحه‬ ‫على الورق‪ ،‬مثلما �صاهدتك تفعل �صنة ‪ 1981‬برب�صيد‪ ،‬يثبت اأنك كنت‬ ‫دائما م�صكونا بالت�صور‪ .‬ما اأن ت�صرع يدك وخميلتك يف و�صع اخلطاطة الأوىل‬ ‫للم�صروع‪ ،‬فال�صيء يحول دون انخراط لوعيك يف اللعبة و قد اأغدق ما‬ ‫تفتقت عنه موهبتك املتجذرة‪.‬‬ ‫بيد اأنني اأعرتف لك اليوم باأن الأمر يتعلق بتجربة جديدة‪ .‬لي�س من حيث‬ ‫املحتوى فح�صب ول حتى من حيث املو�صوع بل‬ ‫وب�صكل جلي على م�صتوى فل�صفة ال�صتغال‪ .‬واأنت تعك�س موجتك مذكرا‬

‫مبو�صوعة ال�صجرة تبادر باإعادة طرح اإ�صكالية الفن التجريدي على طريقتك‬ ‫اخلا�صة‪.‬‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫ل�صت على الإطالق يف حاجة لأن اأذكرك بالفنان بيت مودريان ‪Piet Mondrian‬‬ ‫و حكاية �صجرته‪ .‬اإل اأن موندريان با�صتغاله على ال�صجرة كان ي�صبو اإىل جتريد‬ ‫ال�صفرة‪ ،‬جتريد منوذج الكائنات‪ ،‬جتريد الأ�صياء و اإذن العامل‪ ،‬و اإذا بك تعود‬ ‫اإىل هذا اجلذر حيث تلب�س العامل حلته ال�صاعرية التي افتقدها منذ اأن انربى يف‬ ‫�صباقه املحموم اإىل ما اآل اإيه من تقزمي و تفقري للذات‪.‬‬ ‫مل تفاجئني و اأنا اأراك تعود اإىل جذور التجريد لتد�صن مرحلة جديدة من‬ ‫جتربتك‪ .‬اإنها خ�صو�صية املبدعني والفال�صفة والذين ما اأن تطاأ اأقدامهم ذروة‬ ‫م�صاراتهم الطويلة حتى ي�صتوقفهم طريقهم يف حمطة تاأملية لأ�صول جتربتهم‬ ‫اخلا�صة‪.‬‬ ‫يف هذا العمل ت�صع رجلك بكامل ثقلك يف رحبة الفن املعا�صر دون اأن‬ ‫تتخلى عن ا�صتفهاتك الرا�صخة‪ .‬تعود اإىل اأ�صل املمار�صة كما تعود اإىل اأ�صل‬ ‫التاريخ اأي اإىل اأ�صل الوجود‪ .‬تلب�س الأ�صجار (العامل) بحلل اأ�صماء �صاربة يف‬ ‫الرمزية‪ .‬تنطلق يف البحث عن الأن�صاب و الوهج بل و اأي�صا عن جذور التعبري‬ ‫الفني‪ .‬وبذلك تكون قد التحقت بابن عربي يف اإحدى امليتولوجيات التي ْمل‬ ‫يتوانَ يف ت�صييدها من خالل موؤلفه ال�صهري ”الفتوحات املكية“‪( :‬اعلم اأن اهلل‬ ‫تعاىل ملا خلق اآدم عليه ال�صالم الذي هو اأول ج�صم اإن�صاين تكون وجعله اأ�ص ًال‬ ‫لوجود الأج�صام الإن�صانية وف�صلت من خمرية طينته ف�صلة خلق منها النخلة‬ ‫فهي اأخت لآدم عليه ال�صالم وهي لنا عمة)‪ .‬يبدو يل اأنك متتلك‪ ،‬عرب هذه‬ ‫القفزة الت�صكيلية املتاأ�صلة‪ ،‬القدرة على حتويل املادة وتعديل ال�صاللة امل�صرتكة‬ ‫التي نقت�صمها مع هذه ال�صجرة املبجلة‪ ،‬النخلة‪ ،‬على هذا النحو وباأ�صلوبك‬ ‫املتفرد متنح للعامل اإ�صما‪.‬‬ ‫موليم العرو�سي‬ ‫الدارالبي�صاء �صتنرب ‪2014‬‬ ‫ترجمة‪ :‬الزبري بن بو�صتى‬
