THE WHY To capitalize on the success of the DiGiN 1:1 Initiative at South Hills High School, it is imperative to increase the innovative opportunities for our students. This document represents the ideas from the DiGiN Mentor Think Tank that would serve as a catalyst to the development of a truly inspirational and creative environment for the entire school.

S U R V E Y S AY S In order to provide an accurate view of the direction the school wanted to go in a survey was sent out to see what students would want to see added to their digital environments and if teachers felt the same way.

Personalized Coaching Opportunities Innovation is just as important for teachers as it is for students. However, the model of the current PD offering does not serve the purpose for all learners. At SHHS we want teachers to actively participate in the design of their own learning and building networks to guide and support that learning. The design needs to focus on 5 targets: Student-Centered learning (including Student Voice) Collaboration , Creativity, Critical thinking, communication and community engagement. Opportunities for learning will be provided through virtual Personal Learning Networks (PLN), Face-To-Face groups and e-Courses using itslearning or Google Classroom. As learning takes place, DiGiN Leaders in various areas will be identified with door badges to provide deeper learning opportunities. Each time a teacher takes a course or completes a training module, a level 1 badge will be awarded indicating the tool or strategy of interest. Each badge is categorized and aligned to the FWISD Badging Plan. The categories we will focus on are:

DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP DIGITAL ASSESSMENT DIGITAL COLLABORATION FLIPPED LEARNING DIGITAL COMMUNICATION DIGITAL CREATIVITY AND RIGOR LEARNING MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS Each tool and strategy will be consistent to what is already and soon to be embedded within curriculum standards. In addition, we will publicly recognize teacher who are not only growing digitally, but who are implementing technology in meaningful ways in their learning environments. These teachers will have the opportunity to be highlighted as the DiGiN D.A.T. (Digital Advocate Teacher) of the week. Each week the students, teachers and administration will have the opportunity to  nominate a worthy candidate. When a teacher is chosen, he/ she will receive a larger door badge for all to see, along with poster of themselves designed to showcase their accolades and shared on all Social Media channels.

Personalized Coaching Opportunities

A DiGiN D.A.T. is an educator who uses technology to: 1. 2.

Encourage students to solve real-world problems by assigning them right assessments.

To prepare and offer questions where students need to empathize, analyze, need reference, create, synthesize, defend substitute viewpoints, decides what they know and what they don't. 3.

Support, guide and facilitate their students in a relevant manner.

You can see on the sample of posters a few of the badges that can be earned. A board and catalog is currently being developed to thoroughly explain and display all badges that are available. As for now, here is the link to the Personalized Learning Opportunities http://bit.ly/YouChoosePD

DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP The Digital game and language has changed for today’s teachers and students and we have to stay on top of it if we plan to provide the best education possible at South Hills. This year, South Hills will concentrate on making the transition from Digital Citizen to Digital Leaders and our theme will be: Brand Empowerment - Our Digital Journey Toward a Positive Digital Future Having a Digital Citizenship learning platform will provide the opportunity to promote engaging conversation between students, teachers and the community about behavior while being immersed in the world of technology. Using the LMS, school and 1:1 websites, South Hills will heavily advocate the teaching of lessons using the Common Sense Media Digital Bytes curriculum. All students will be enrolled in the year long course where they will have the opportunity to produce media projects to articulate their understanding of the social issues concerning being a digital citizen. Various contest will be created to encourage the enthusiasm around the conversations. South Hills will also provide community information by way of Teen Panel Discussions and Semester Technology Nights. The 1:1 website will carry information for parents in the community to further their understanding of the role technology plays in their lives and how to best manage it.

DIGITAL EQUITY The myth is that the digital divide can be solved by giving every student a device. However, even in a 1:1 program this does not make everyone equal, especially if one student has internet access outside of school and another does not. If we want to focus on all students being able to create and design as part of their learning, this has to be able to happen outside the classroom anytime and anywhere. SHHS would like to look at partnering with companies like Kajeet (kajeet.net) to provide “smart spots”, a mobile broadband solution for families without access. Students and parents would be able to check out devices from the DILo for a set period of time in order to complete projects away from school. We have already established a relationship with Kajeet to where we will be able to participate in a pilot opportunity for South Hills to evaluate the benefits for our students.
