A Community Affair

There’s nothing quite like good, oldfashioned fun! A chance to break away from the hustle and bustle of life to enjoy time together with neighbors and friends. Residents had the opportunity to cruise back into time and revisit the good old days at a three-day City event, organized by Mayor Larry Antoskiewicz, Ward 2 Councilwoman Linda Barath and Jackie Canter of BlueLine Classics. Summerfest, hosted Aug. 20-22, hit the spot with a great, big helping of normal we had all been craving, and included Movie in the Park, a Community Cruise Car Show and a lineup of activities, culminating in fireworks. “I want to be clear that its intention was never to replace the long-standing North Royalton Community Festival tradition. This year came with unique challenges, and I offered to step in and plan an event

that residents could gather at to celebrate together as a community. Summerfest fit the bill, proving to be a nice change of pace and scenery,” Mayor Antoskiewicz said.

out having fun in our community. I look forward to more opportunities where we can bring residents together for experiences they will enjoy for years to come,” Canter added.

Barath and Canter agreed. “I think the event proved to be a successful venture. I received a lot of very positive comments,” Barath said.

A 2022 Community Festival is likely, but the Mayor would still like to include Summerfest in some fashion next year.

“Planning a City event is no small task, yet so worthwhile to see families

“I hope we can build on the momentum of Summerfest and expand our City events. I believe residents enjoy these venues and would like to see more,” he said. One of the Mayor’s top goals is to assemble an events committee to help plan a few signature events each year as a way to spice things up and strengthen community spirit. So stay tuned, it sounds like more fun is on the agenda. We all second that!

some of our zoning requirements to increase our attractiveness as a community.

Greetings and welcome to the 2021-2022 Edition of the North Royalton Magazine. I am Larry Antoskiewicz, Mayor of the City of North Royalton. As I said in my annual State of the City Address, which can be viewed at northroyalton.org/stateofthecity, the events of the past year and a half have been a challenging time, and it appears as though some of those challenges may linger a bit longer. But we have endured and will continue to persevere.

Often times, the best view comes after the hardest climb. And so, that is what we are looking forward to after these difficult times. We are on the cusp of a new future full of hope and optimism.

There is no doubt that these have been unprecedented times for not only our community, our state, our nation, but the entire globe. We learned just how interconnected our entire planet really is through the spread of a tiny virus. But that same interconnectivity worked to our advantage as we learned to work together even more closely to fight the obstacles in our way, while never ceasing to serve the residents of our community. We have been able to return to some of the signature events and activities residents look forward to. We continue to address roads and infrastructure, stormwater mitigation projects and recreational amenities. In fact, we have just completed an in-depth study of Memorial Park complete with a master plan that includes several improvements there including replacing the upper pavilion and the bridge this fall, as well as replacing the lower pavilion with an enclosed structure and adding a splash pad next year. A citywide master plan was also performed that recommended several changes including streamlining

I hope you take the time to peruse this magazine, a yearly tradition published in partnership with Image Builders Marketing, which is full of information to familiarize you with all North Royalton has to offer. We are a quaint, yet growing community that holds true to our rural farmland roots, while continuing to move forward into a brighter tomorrow. We are a desirable community to live, work and play due to our excellent schools, variety of housing options, growing recreational spaces, and thriving business opportunities. Here at City Hall, we are always looking for ways to communicate information to our residents and businesses. Our newly revamped City website, northroyalton.org, is a great tool for residents to stay informed and in the loop, as well as our City Facebook page, @cityofnorthroyaltonOH. And please, if you ever have any questions about our great city, my staff is always happy to help. Thank you all, and I’ll see you soon! Sincerely, Larry Antoskiewicz Mayor of the City of North Royalton www.northroyalton.org

Community Garden symbolizes the fusion of the city’s rich agricultural history with today’s contemporary town that features neighborly suburban housing developments and convenient amenities. The community garden, located in Memorial Park, invites residents of all ages and backgrounds to grow some of their own produce, keeping alive the town’s farming spirit, confirms Dejana Cinquepalmi, who has been the coordinator of the garden since it was established in 2010.

Cinquepalmi says. “Some have no place at home to plant a garden and others are just tired of battling the hungry deer in their backyards. We have many people who have never gardened before. The community garden gives them a perfect opportunity to get out into the fresh air and meet people who have similar interests. And it’s always nice to see children in the gardens, actually outside getting dirty.” This year, Cinquepalmi says, the community garden grew by 30 additional plots, for a total of 74.

gardeners also help their neighbors by donating a portion of their harvest to the North Royalton Food Bank. One year, Cinquepalmi said, gardeners donated more than 1,200 pounds of their produce to the food bank. “We have baskets at the garden where people can donate whatever they would like to, whether it’s a handful of beans or a few tomatoes,” she said. “We have a group of volunteers who collect the donated items every day, take them home, wash them and deliver them to the food bank.”

“Our gardeners live in apartments, they live in condos and they live in houses,”

park land and some of the last remaining holdovers of Cuyahoga County’s farming past - combined with modern amenities - is one of the strengths that make North Royalton one of the most desirable towns in the county. “With our diversity, North Royalton can offer pretty much everything people want,” observes Antoskiewicz, who served his second year as mayor in 2021. “We have single family areas, we have rural areas for people who want to have some acreage and we have senior housing, including nice townhouses for older residents who want to downsize without having to move out of the city.” The city’s strategic location not only provides convenient tranportation for businesses, but also makes it easy for residents to do their shopping, visit the country and access interstate highways all within minutes of home. “North Royalton is known as a city that has a lot of locally owned mom and pop businesses compared to big chains stores and restaurants,” Antoskiewicz says. “That helps us to maintain the atmosphere of a small town even though we’re getting to be among the biggest cities in the county in terms of population. Many of our small businesses are owned by people who also are residents of the city.” Having a diverse business base - focused in large part in the city’s business parks - protects the city from overly relying on one dominant business to generate taxes that fund municipal

Implementation of a revised master plan for the city also is underway. The plan was adopted by City Council in July.

The mayor says a 240 acre section of commercial land on Abbey Road is expected to be developed to accommodate new business. “We’re looking to sewer the area to open it up and make it more attractive for development for smaller businesses, office buildings and those types of projects,” he says. “Most of it is zoned office research and you also have some general industrial land there. We’re looking at the possibility of connecting that area to our business park on York Road. Developing that area will expand our tax base without endangering the demographics of the city.”

Nine percent of North Royalton’s area consists of parkland, which includes portions of the Cleveland Metroparks Mill Stream Run reservation, along with nine baseball fields, five soccer fields, two basketball courts, a skate park and three tennis courts in city-owned parks. “We’re in the beginning stages of a master plan for the parks,” Antoskiewicz says. “One of our focuses is to add more amenities. We’re going to start by replacing some of our older pavilions and start working on the park in general next year. We’re hoping to get a splash park in by next year.” The master plan for the parks, the mayor says, also will include more walking trails and additional green space.

“We are supposed to review our master plan every seven years, so it was time for us to do it,” Antoskiewicz said. In the Town Center district, the master plan encourages traditional downtown-type development that will include a pedestrian-oriented, walkable streetscape. The plan also emphasizes bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure around other areas of the city. “Many people move to North Royalton because they see it as a way of getting away from a lot of the traffic, a lot of the hustle, bustle, but on the other end they also want some of the amenities for their families - maybe some closer shopping areas and restaurants,” Antoskiewicz says.

and the culverts and retention basins,” the mayor reports. “We believe that there’s some real value in keeping the infrastructure that nobody sees clean. We started last year going around with a vacuum truck and cleaning catch basins, and we want to do that on a regular basis. We’re also looking into cleaning some of the bigger mains which have not been cleaned for a long time. It’s not a sexy thing to do, but we think it’s a real important thing to do.”  Continued on page 8

Despite going through a challenging year, the mayor said, the city government is in good financial shape and was able to move forward with some vital road and infrastructure projects during 2020 and 2021. “There are always concerns about storm water, so we continuously work on the ditches

Chamber of Commerce

Bicentennial Gala Ball

Coming Back from a Tough Year. Slowly, but surely, things are

beginning to return to a somewhat normal pace for our area businesses. Although employees of many companies are still working remotely, others are gradually returning to the workplace due to the easing up of restrictions. Understanding that we were all experiencing the same hardships, to one degree or another, our publication, the Royalton Recorder, worked with small businesses to help keep them visible to the community. They introduced ways of helping our local merchants while they were struggling. As the Chamber of Commerce has done since it began in 1918, it continues to advance and develop the commercial, industrial, civic, cultural, and general interest of the city and its trade area. As a member of the Northern Ohio Area Chambers of Commerce (NOACC),

the North Royalton Chamber offers its members many tangible benefits to save them money. Some benefits include discounts on health care insurance, credit card processing, office supplies, energy savings on gas and electric bills, to name Bicentennial Gala Ball just a few. The Chamber has shared with its members a wealth of The Royalton Recorder newspaper, information from NOACC to assist our known as the Heart of Our Hometown, businesses in getting back on their feet has been providing residents with all and resume operations. their local news since 1941. Funds also have been used to renovate the middle school with updated HVAC units and the construction of a new secure main entrance way located on the south side of the building. Progress continues with HVAC and heat pump work, renovating the media center, creating a new STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) room, and reconfiguring the fifth and sixth-grade pod area. The reconfiguration of the seventh and eighthgrade pods is scheduled for next summer. At the high school, the 1970 and 1980s sections have been renovated to house the humanities classrooms (English, social studies and foreign language) and a new 100,000-squarefoot STEM wing was built onto the front of the high school. A Message from our Superintendent North Royalton City Schools’ Bear Families,

Michael Laub, Superintendent North Royalton City Schools

I am honored and excited to be the superintendent of the North Royalton City School District. As we begin the 2021-22 school year, there are several reasons to be excited. The building projects are coming to a close and will be complete by November. These new and renovated areas will be wonderful learning spaces for students and staff. Also, we look to start the school year with fully in-person learning. The ability to get back to an educational and social environment that allows our students to learn

and grow appropriately is critical to their success. We will certainly keep our eye on health official recommendations and adjust accordingly. I can’t wait to see our students in action, both inside and outside of the classroom. We need to create positive experiences for students as they learn, perform, and compete. Those experiences need to be a partnership between staff, families, and the communities we serve. It is going to be an outstanding year! I look forward to meeting and working with everyone! www.northroyalton.org

BLUELINE CLASSICS

etired police officers, Tim Franko and Jeff Canter founded BlueLine Classics in 2013. Tim and Jeff grew up together, shared a squad car at one point and maintained a life-long friendship. Two common themes emerged for both, serving the public and classic cars. Both Tim and Jeff are the sons of retired police officers, and they have been riding around in antique vehicles for as long as they can remember. The thin blue line represents pride and respect for a dangerous profession intended to keep communities safe and thus, a great name for their new business venture. It is with pride and respect that they manage their classic car dealership. BlueLine Classics has enjoyed nearly 10 years of success in North Royalton. Tim and Jeff Jeff Canter and Tim Franko use their expansive network to sell cars all over the world. Department, at the Brunswick Medical Center, on Center Road, in Brunswick.

Traumatic Brain Injury Assessment and Treatment Close to Home Each year in the U.S., there are 7.5

million head injuries—of which, 95 percent are classified as mild traumatic brain injuries, including: Brain bleeds (structural injuries) – potentially life-threatening Concussions (functional injuries) – not life-threatening No matter the category, any head injury needs quick assessment, diagnosis and treatment. Nearly five million head injury patients are seen in Emergency Departments (EDs) across the United States each year, and more than 80 percent receive a head Computed Tomography (CT) Scan. The gold standard

for assessing brain bleeds, a head CT uses radiation, which can increase the life-long risk of brain cancer. And 91 percent of the time, patients receiving a head CT are negative for brain bleed. CT does not detect concussion, which, until now, has been diagnosed only using subjective measures, which can have poor reliability. Fortunately, advances in technology have brought about an exciting new tool to help ED clinicians assess mild traumatic brain injuries while also reducing the rate of unnecessary CT scans and providing results in a more timely and accurate way, especially in concussion diagnoses. It’s called BrainScope®—and it’s now available at the Southwest General Brunswick Emergency

We’re here for you, in your home or ours.

BrainScope® is an FDA-cleared, non-invasive medical device that uses a disposable headset to record the brain’s electrical activity (via EEG signals) from the forehead, much like the EKG records the heart signal from the chest. It is available for patients, aged 13-85 years, depending on the level of injury. “We are very excited to provide our community with the state-of-the-art BrainScope® diagnostic tool,” says Carrie Paliga, clinical manager, Emergency Services, Southwest General Brunswick Emergency Department. “It’s a quick, safe, non-invasive way to diagnose the severity of a concussion and determine whether further testing is indicated. Additionally, it allows us to start a treatment plan more quickly than ever before, making for a better patient experience and outcome. Reducing the X-ray exposure during a CT scan is better for the patient as well.” Additionally, BrainScope® can be used to track recovery to aid in return-to-activity decisions as well as establish baselines for healthy patients. For additional information about BrainScope®, visit brainscope.com.

Homes & Real Estate Is the Housing Market Changing? The answer… “Yes AND No”. The number of new listings coming on the market in North Royalton is down over 35% compared to the same time last year! Meanwhile, the number of Active listings on the market is UP over 14% compared to last year. What does this mean? Some sellers are pricing their homes too high right off the bat, instead of letting the buyer demand drive up their price. The crazy thing is, the average Sold price in North Royalton (for singlefamily homes) is up 20%! The issue is that, many sellers are nervous about listing without having a place to move to. And, if they are pricing too high to start, their houses aren’t selling as quickly as they were during the height of this market.

advantage of the market and sell for considerably more money than ever imagined! There has never been a better time for buyers to work with a full-time REALTOR with a reputable Broker so they don’t miss out on their dream home. If you’re thinking about SELLING or BUYING, position yourself perfectly! Use a full-time REALTOR to take advantage of this extremely competitive market.

Some sellers still have buyers lining up to see their home before the ink is dry on the listing paperwork (and sometimes, even before the paperwork is started!). In this case, it gives the seller more flexibility to move and find their dream home. Why? Because, with the shortage of homes coming on the market, buyers are just waiting for the right home to come along and are acting quickly to make sure their offer is the one accepted. Meanwhile, inventory is still low in most markets. With the extreme competitiveness in the market due to the lack of inventory, we are still seeing a large number of multiple offer situations and sellers are able to be firmer on their prices as long as they price it according to the market to begin with. With strategic marketing, from a full-time REALTOR, across multiple types of media, a seller can take

The Cat’s MEOW The kitties, employees

and volunteers of Stay-AWhile Cat Shelter have a new place to call home. A little over one year after breaking ground on a new facility at 12662 York Delta Drive in the Industrial Parkway, construction is complete. “Stay-A-While Cat Shelter is a cage-free, no-kill shelter that provides a safe, loving environment for kittens and cats as they await adoption. If for any reason, one of our felines is deemed unadoptable, it is guaranteed a forever home at Stay-A-While,” said Director Beth Pearce, who began her journey with the shelter in 1995 as a volunteer. The new facility has multiple rooms for cats, a quarantine space, space for offices and an employee/ volunteer break room kitchen, among other features. Stay-A-While was founded 37 years ago as Bide-A-Wee, Scottish for “stay-a-while”, and was renamed in 2003. There are currently 70 cats housed at Stay-A-While, which is operated by 25 volunteers, the Director and nine part-time employees. The new facility has been funded by donations. To adopt a cat, donate to the shelter or if you want more information on the shelter and their wish list of needs, visit the shelter’s website at www.stayawhilecatshelter.org.

is a proud 2017 North Royalton graduate who also attended Royal View Elementary, North Royalton Middle School, and North Royalton High School, where she was a member of the National Honor Society and Key Club. She was offered several scholarships to play basketball at the next level and chose to attend the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Military service is a family legacy as her father is an Air Force veteran and both of her grandfathers served our nation, one in the Air Force and the other in the Navy.

Deborah and Robert White, White’s parents, are extremely proud of her achievements and her service to our country, and are also honored by her humble, spiritual, supportive, and courageous nature. North Royalton’s Mayor, Larry Antoskiewicz proclaimed Wednesday, June 16th, 2021 as Gabrielle A. White Day in Celebration of her accomplishments.

Academics and athletics have both been passions of White’s while at West Point. She achieved the Dean’s List throughout her tenure, graduating from West Point on May 22, 2021 with a major in Philosophy and serving her senior year as the Command Sergeant Major for 3rd Regiment, USCC. While at West Point, White completed Air Assault School and spent two years playing on the Division I Women’s Basketball team. During the second half of her cadet career, she competed in a military and physical skills competition known as Sandhurst with the USMA Black and Gold Sandhurst team. In the 2021 Sandhurst competition, her team finished first among teams from various military branches and institutions. White was also the female recipient of the Lt. Gen. Hal Moore Warrior Athlete of Excellence Award in 2020, which pays homage to the leadership, service, and warrior attributes of Lt. Gen. Hal Moore. White will now begin her Army career at Fort Benning, Georgia, where she will conduct training. After Basic Officer Leadership Course, it’s on to Jump School then Ranger School. She will then serve in the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
