PHUKET LIVING.THE BOATHOUSE PHUKET

The Boathouse Phuket anchored in the ‘Bay of Plenty’

T

he Boathouse Phuket is not a ‘juggernaut’ resort. In fact, it is what is fashionably known as a boutique hotel – 39 rooms to be precise. But it has two inestimable advantages: one, god-given, is its unique location; the other, manmade, is its legendary reputation for hospitality. Created three decades ago by Thai visionary Mom Tri Devakul, it was the first five-star hotel in Kata, located in a dominant prime beachfront position. Originally a venue for boat owners – hence the name – it may still be ‘anchored’ between the road to Kata Noi and the Andaman Sea, but as a consequence, every one of its splendidly appointed suites enjoys a seaview. A warm welcome provides the perfect entrée to The Boathouse experience. Greeted at reception by unfailingly courteous staff – and the courtesies are maintained for the rest of our stay – we are invited to enjoy a pre-prandial cocktail. The choice is huge: complex concoctions include the signature Boathouse Cocktaill based on camomile gin, vermouth and cola syrup, but my choice is a classic rum mojito which comes in a tankard with wedges of lime and mint. So refreshing. The house list of spirits is equally impressive: nine whiskies by the glass, half a dozen gins and vodkas, five tequilas, even seven varieties of mineral water. Escorted to our suite, we are instantly struck by its easy charms. Unusually spacious by today’s standards, the choice ranges from 36 sqm deluxe rooms to our 63 sqm Junior Suite, up to Ocean http://www.windowonphuket.com/ windowonphuket.com

The attention to friendly detail is everywhere apparent: a personally written letter of welcome from the general manager, Max Chin, is reinforced by an illuminated television greeting. On the coffee table is a message saying “Welcome Home”. It does not seem inappropriate. There are bowls of fruit, biscuits and sweetmeats, a coffee machine, a safe, a range of elegant toiletries, thongs and slippers, sumptuous terry towelling – even a mosquito spray. A tablet lists an array of illustrated features and activities, which naturally include free wi-fi. The fridge is amply stocked and a bottle of wine awaits the new guest. No stone is left unturned.

Suites overlooking the infinity pool and finally to the lavishly appointed Penthouse Suite. Each and every living area boasts a massive bathroom with huge rectangular bath and rain shower; ours possesses commodious twin wash-basins, with everything impeccably clad in gleaming white tiles. A remarkable feature of our suite is the huge bevelled glass ‘porthole’, which visually links the bathroom and the seascape beyond. While towelling down or just waking in the morning, your gaze takes your eye past the French windows, past the private terrace with its personal sunbeds, past the courtyard with its four-leafed jacuzzi pool and all the way out to the breaking line of surf and the azure sky. What a vision to awake to… The Boathouse’s nautical theme is accentuated by a rope framed circular mirror, a standard lamp with – yes – rope fittings, and by grey, wavy textured headboards that echo the pleated curtains and accentuate the seafaring motif. But the emphasis is squarely on traditional comfort: a huge sofa with piles of colourful cushions set in an inviting alcove, a luxurious double bed, a spacious desk, armchairs, deep woollen carpets and wooden floors.

The Boathouse has an intimacy and compactness that few luxury establishments can hope to match: one can walk from prow to stern in minutes; a scenic beachside stroll from the grand reception area through the main bar, with its nautical motifs, past the elegant restaurant where one can either dine in air-conditioned comfort, or caressed by ocean breezes beneath arching sea almond trees. On to a serene courtyard flanked by palms and terraces with its unique, four-leafed jacuzzi pool; beyond to a sunbathers’ paradise with rows of white, parasolled sun-beds clad in blue livery next to a crescent-shaped infinity pool. The area is flanked by a matching pool bar serving appetising snacks and drinks. If you want privacy, there is a sala next to the beach and even a secluded dining room.

PHUKET LIVING.THE BOATHOUSE PHUKET

Featured in every recent edition of Tatler’s ‘Best Restaurant Guide’, The Boathouse has been synonymous with fine dining since its inception thirty years ago.

GM Max Chin and Chef Jonathan Bruell are to be congratulated for this sedulous attention to culinary detail. For a boutique hotel, the range is astonishing We are first presented with an amuse-bouche of creamed vegetable soup and spoonfuls of cordon-bleu pork, accompanied by a glass of Freixinet ‘bubbly’. Aware of the generosity of Boathouse portions, I try not to over-indulge. But both soup and sparkling wine are stimulating appetisers. For an entrée, my partner, who sometimes assesses a meal by the quality of a particular dish, chooses her favourite Caesar Salad. It meets with her total approval: lots of crisp lettuce and bacon, croutons, parmesan cheese and even a poached egg. Dinner is enjoyed at the sea’s edge – literally. There is a choice between dining next to the picture windows in air-conditioned comfort, or embracing the salty tang and visual impact of an al fresco experience. We choose the open air, where the view extends in a wide, wooded, right-hand sweep to the distant Karon headland and left to the fairy lights of another hostelry. While Phuket boasts many fine maritime vistas, nothing can quite match The Boathouse’s location. After all, it was there first. Featured in every recent edition of Tatler’s ‘Best Restaurant Guide’, The Boathouse has been synonymous with fine dining since its inception thirty years ago. Now owned by a Singapore group (HPL), iconic standards of culinary excellence are zealously maintained. The five star restaurant boasts an extraordinarily wide selection of dishes, based predominantly on classic western and traditional Thai cuisine. Unsurprisingly, since it is The Boathouse, and since it has a frontage literally a step away from the whites sands of Kata Beach, the menu – like the décor – also genuflects to matters maritime, with its emphasis on freshly-caught seafood and fish.

From the Thai set menu, my tiger prawns are skewered on a bed of egg plant and young lemongrass. It is clear that the chef is especially keen on crunchy textures as well as surprising flavours: my next dish is a beautifully presented offering of crispy duck breast with tart lime slices and tiny green aubergines. Innovative. But the real ‘pièce de résistance’ comes with our main dishes. Wan’s choice of Gaeng Kati Poo, from the Thai Favourites list, is a sumptuously creamy crab curry, flavoured with betel leaves and accompanied by jasmine rice. I cheat a little: my choice is something familiar. But the Lamb Shank Massaman is such http://www.windowonphuket.com/ windowonphuket.com

a superb dish, I want to revisit the gustatory experience. Made, unusually, with one of the choicest lamb cuts, it is accompanied by sweet potato purée and a rich, robust, sauce. The tender meat, slow-cooked for many hours, melts in the mouth. Exquisite. We finish with a palate-cleansing Pineapple Confitt with passion fruit sorbet. Very refreshing and an appropriate conclusion to a memorable meal. The Boathouse has been the recipient of the prestigious ‘ Wine Spectator Award of Excellence’ every year since 2006. The wine cellar, tantalisingly viewed from the main bar, boasts more than 600 unique labels from more than seventeen wine-making countries, including Thailand. The list is catholic – everything from Chilean Cabernet to legendary Petrus. Fifteen wines are available by the glass – a thoughtful touch. Fittingly, it is a Thai wine, recommended by the sommelier, that we choose for dinner, a 2015 Heritage Shirazz from Monsoon Valley. Plummy and well-balanced, it proves an inspired choice.

Tenderloin carpaccio. There are seven Thai delicacies including the classic Som tam with prawns and Larb ped d (minced duck with galangal). Even a selection of hot soups. But sated after a delicious breakfast, we decide on a single main course. My choice, suitably maritime, is Grouper fillet;t it arrives in a spicy tamarind and lemongrass sauce which perfectly complements the crisp and tangy fish. My partner opts for a Thai dish of spicy minced beef and rice which she pronounces delicious. But the choice is high, wide and handsome – twenty spectacular offerings, half of them based on seafood or fish, dishes to suit every palate. And if you want something different, there is always the appetising Thai Pinto lunch sett – a selection of small bowls, including aubergine based dishes intended for sharing. Breakfast is predictably wide-ranging. Everything from traditional bacon and sausages to pork patties, Thai savoury rice and stir-fried noodle dishes – even prawn congee – complemented by cereals, a delectable range of breads and fruits, freshly squeezed juices and superlative coffee. Lunch is taken in yet another of the five dining venues, next to the bar. Again the nautical theme dominates: above the bar is a row of portholes; behind the counter is a charming and restful vertical pattern in white and contrasting shades of cerulean blue and sea green. The staff sport striped tops and navy blue pantaloons; even the table mats are blue and white. The menu offers a range of cold starters, including ten Western selections, ranging from Organic farmed salad d and Avocado shrimp cocktaill to such exotic fare as Beetroot cured salmon and http://www.windowonphuket.com/ windowonphuket.com

DINING.NIKITA’S

A beach-side dining experience. On the water´s edge, serving a full range of live seafood, Thai and international dishes and oven-fresh, wood-fired pizzas.

Nikita’s Live Seafood / Pizzas / Thai / International Daily 9am until late Created by its Thai owner 25 years ago, Nikita’s enjoys a sensational location oceanside at Rawai Beach. Customers dine in a lush garden setting right at the water’s edge, with white sand underfoot, and enjoy spectacular ocean and island panoramas during the day and a romantic atmosphere at night. The latest addition to Nikita’s offering is a full range of live seafood, delivered daily to their live seafood tanks. Feast on Tiger prawns, Phuket lobster, black crab, oysters and more. Nikita’s boasts no fewer than 35 cocktails and there are more than 40 labels in their new wine cellar, including several available by the glass. A competitively priced Santa Alicia cabernet sauvignon from Chile – full bodied with supple tannins – provides a perfect complement to our meal. Seeking something distinctive for the main course, my friend orders a firm-fleshed and succulent Mahi-mahi (dorado). Served with a creamy white sauce laced with Thai herbs and mashed potato, it is pronounced superb. My choice is a whole, deep-fried white snapper in fish sauce (sweet and sour sauce is also available) with a Thai inspired salad of crisp slivers of green mango and peanuts. Delectable. It is worth noting that many of the vegetables served here are sourced from Nikita’s own farm. Though Nikita’s emphasis today is on live seafood, there is an impressive range of authentic Thai and international dishes. And, of course, Nikita’s is famous for its thin-crust pizzas – all cooked in a wood-fired oven and celebrated for their lavish toppings. We finish our meal in style with a slab of hot, dark chocolate mousse and a scoop of fragrant ice-cream. A sensational and contrasting mix of flavours, textures and temperatures. A visit to Nikita’s certainly leaves a pleasant taste in the mouth…

he Nai Harn has undergone many transformations over the years. Nowadays, Rock Salt, a pebble’s throw from the waves lapping Nai Harn Bay, is perfect for a pre-prandial cocktail. Relax to funky music, admire the roseate sunset, and peruse the list of ‘Tribute and Signature Cocktails’ created by Salim Khoury. Awarded the accolade of UK ‘Bartender of the Year’ in 1992, and famous for his stewardship of the London Savoy’s American Bar, he has long been associated with The Nai Harn. Little wonder the cocktails are so memorable. My partner has a Nai Harn Sunset, a deep pink confection made with Balls gin, fresh water melon, basil, lime and Prosecco. Mine, a Nai Harn Cooler,r is a luscious offering: Kristall gin combined with zesty orange marmalade and the juice of lime, orange and pineapple. Also on the list are: Rumble, Blushing Monarch – featuring gin and Campari and, of course, Lady Nai Harn.

SALMON MAKI TEMPURA BY RIVET SUSHI RICE (1 portion) 80g sushi rice | 120 ml water Cook sushi rice to desired texture and keep warm and moist. SUSHI RICE VINEGAR MIXTURE 10 ml Japanese mitzukan vinegar | 1g salt | 3g sugar. Mix all ingredients and boil till salt and sugar dissolved. Set aside to cool down. Once vinegar mixtures cooled down, to mix with cooked warm sushi rice. On a tray, spread the sushi rice and fan it till it cools down. SALMON STUFFING 35g fresh salmon, deboned and roughly chopped | 10g Japanese mayonnaise | 5g spring opinion, chopped | 3g Japanese tobiko In a bowl, mix all ingredients together and keep chilled. SUSHI NORI 0.5 piece sushi nori seaweed. Placed sushi rice mixture on sushi nori seaweed and spread our evenly. Gently spoon salmon stuffing on sushi rice. Carefully roll as in the photo and set aside.

For a main course, a must-try is the ‘piece de resistance’, the Andaman Platter,r a comprehensive sea-food offering for two, which pays homage to the very essence of Phuket’s marine heritage. Sea shrimps, tiger prawns, Fine de Claire oysters, steamed Rawai clams in chili, ginger, coriander and coconut milk, served with all the trimmings. Less demanding on pocket and palate, sample Mediterranean inspired flavours: Souvlaki – barbequed pork kebabs with grilled peppers – or the Italian-inspired Blue Mushroom Pizza. Dessert was a Coconut Pannacotta (with fruit salad and homemade passion fruit ice cream) that looked good and tasted divine. My partner’s reluctance gave way and an order for one became two. It was just too hard to resist. To top it all, there’s a DJ playing every Friday from 4 pm -10 pm. Daily Happy Hour ‘Buy 1 Get 1 Free’ from 5.30 - 6.30 pm. Read online

ocated on the beachfront of the luxurious Rosewood resort, Ta Khai is built from weathered wood and repurposed materials. The rustic, yet chic, Thai seafood restaurant is popular for its authentic southern Thai cuisine. The fresh, spicy flavours and unique dishes are a labour of love derived from a more than 30-year culinary union between the married chef couple at the helm of Rosewood’s signature restaurant.

Some of the couple’s favourites include Gaeng Poo, a crab curry featuring yellow curry paste, betel leaves (often used in southern Thai cuisine), and rice vermicelli; then there is Moo Hong, a scrumptious soy-braised pork with black pepper and garlic. Interestingly enough, it takes Auntie Yai more than four hours to prepare the perfect Moo Hong as it takes an extended length of time for the meat to cook so thoroughly that it really melts in your mouth.

Rotkaew and Sangchan Suttitummanon, better known as Uncle Nun and Auntie Yai, first met in the southern province of Trang many years ago. Theirs is a sweet story. Uncle Nun was working at a restaurant and Auntie Yai was a huge fan of a particular seafood fried rice dish he made. Yai loved the dish so much that she asked him for the recipe, Nun offered to teach her his culinary secrets and truth be told, they fell in love over their mutual love for food. Now, 30 plus years later, their love for authentic southern Thai cuisine and local seafood delights are showcased across the menu at the rustic Ta Khai restaurant.

Auntie Yai is so dedicated to her craft that she does not leave the dish to be cooked on the stove, but rather she remains on stand-by to often stir the Moo Hong in order for the bottom part not to be burnt, as well as to skim off the excess fats from the pork belly that have accumulated on the surface. This helps to degrease the dish and ensure guests get the full flavour of the sauce.

Uncle Nun and Auntie Yai operated a local food stall in Trang for 20 years, and spent some time in the kitchen at a popular

Phuket Elephant Sanctuary, the first ethical elephant sanctuary on the southern island of Phuket, offers volunteers the opportunity to spend one or more meaningful days immersing themselves in an elephant’s life while supporting the sanctuary with its daily tasks. Since its opening in December 2016, Phuket Elephant Sanctuary has rehabilitated 10 elephants back into forest life after decades of abuse and hard work in the tourism and trekking industries. Set on 30 acres of lush tropical jungle bordering Khao Phra Thaeo National Park, the sanctuary offers the ideal natural habitat for retired elephants – and a great opportunity for visitors to observe the biggest land mammal on earth in an ethical way. All proceeds from visiting tourists support the sanctuary’s mission to rescue and rehabilitate elephants back into forest life.

TRAVEL.TAKUA PA

Discovering historical

Ta Kua Pa Located on Route 4 north of Khao Lak in Phang Nga Province, the quiet little town of Takua Pa is known as being a transit point for travellers catching buses further afield. However, Takua Pa is unique in its own right and well worth a visit.

Black-and-white photos from the tin mining era

Nestled by the Yan Yao River, Takua Pa was once a famous international port. Traders began to arrive in the 1300s, and by the late 1800s the town was booming thanks to the tin mining industry. Takua Pa was an important tin dredging area during those days, and the town saw an influx of Chinese migrants as well as Dutch, Portuguese and British traders. When tin prices began to fall in the 1900s, the traders moved on but the Chinese community stayed and assimilated into Thai society. Chinese culture is evident everywhere you look in Takua Pa. There are a handful of intricate Chinese pagodas as well as a few old Chinese-style tea and herb shops. Chinese-style red lanterns line most of the streets and many of the local families are of mixed Thai-Chinese heritage. The entire Takua Pa district is a really interesting place to explore. There are a lot of historic buildings, a fascinating old library filled with black-and-white

photos from the tin mining era, as well as many Chinese temples, shrines and Buddhist wats. Old camp walls line the outskirts of the Old Town; built to surround a governor’s residence in the 1800s, the walls make for a rugged yet peaceful scene of urban decay.

‘Takua Pa My Home’ T-shirts shop

Every Sunday, there is a classic market on Sri Takua Pa Street in the heart of Takua Pa Old Town. The street begins to buzz in the late afternoon, and the market comes to life. Local vendors sell fresh fruit, gooey desserts, a variety of grilled meats and classic Thai iced tea and coffee. The food is fresh and affordable; do try the caramel-graham waffle cookies. These cookies are a local speciality and absolutely delightful.

Takua Pa street scenes include intricately painted murals, cute places to take photographs and market vendors.

The market’s atmosphere is laid back with one-of-a-kind souvenirs including vintage postcards, ‘Takua Pa My Home’ T-shirts and Chinese lacquer ware for sale. Many of the vendors set up shop in front of their homes and, if you’re lucky, you may be invited inside to examine old photographs and listen to Thai country and western music. The Sunday Market on Sri Takua Pa Street is really quite charming, and the perfect way to wind down a day of sightseeing.

Equally fascinating is Khok Kanoon Bridge, used by tin mining workers in the olden days. The bridge is located on private property but has become a popular stop-off point for day trippers taking photographs and selfies. A visit to Takua Pa would not be complete without sampling the district’s original Thai iced coffee. Locally known as ‘gafe bolan’ this ancient recipe is brewed from robust, full-flavoured beans and the coffee is served with whipped cream on top and garnished with anise. This Thai iced coffee is found in nearly all of the shops in Takua Pa and makes for a refreshing treat while sightseeing. A big part of the allure of Takua Pa is actually getting there. Nature is abundant in Phang Nga Province, and the road passes through a lot of rural and natural landscapes. By observing the traditional local lifestyle of the small villages and coastal towns, one notices that life moving along to a slower tempo here. The days of the tin mining industry in Takua Pa are now gone and expansive plantations and rubber tree farms have taken its place in the local economy. The countryside is brightly verdant and the small roads twist and turn at a leisurely pace. Local fruit vendors ply their wares along major roads. Takua Pa is old, historical and charming. A day exploring the quiet town is truly a cultural affair that provides insight into a former booming port town that was once famous for being one of the most cosmopolitan places in all of Southern Thailand. A daytrip to Takua Pa is well worth the effort. Start off from Phuket early, and don’t forget to take your camera.

LEGAL MATTERS.PROPERTY: LEGAL & PRACTICAL TIPS FOR HIGH SEASON

Property: legal & pracঞcal ঞps for high season As contractors, agents, business owners and residents all recover from the apparent surprise that there is quite a lot of rain for eight months a year in Phuket, minds turn to preparation for an arrival of visitors and scrutiny that may turn from light interest into strong commitment to invest in a property. Potential investors should consider recent developments in Thailand and the impact on projects to ensure that good decisions are made.

Hotel licensing for projects, licenses & rental programmes There are numerous media reports about Thai government crackdowns on properties, some of which operate as hotels without any license, or without the correct licenses to cover their activities. Therefore, when considering any investment in a property that will ultimately involve some form of short-term rental arrangements, vigorous enquiry should be made into the compliance plan to configure a real estate development to be suitable under various regulatory regimes from building control, environmental regulations through to zoning and planning controls.

The famous rental return guarantee It doesn’t take a real estate genius to conduct Internet searches to ascertain a realistic rate of return on a real estate investment, and to compare the yield to stocks, bonds, long-term bank deposit, crypto currencies and any other investments currently promoted in the business world. If the promised ‘rental guarantee’ is too good to

be true, then there will be something amiss either in the business plan of the developer or the operator – or there could be a ‘house of cards’ set of promises based on speculative sales at an overvalue. Where a developer has taken the time to calculate the prospective realistic performance of asset managers to produce rental yield, built in contingencies for soft and hard refurbishments, planned for ‘rainy days’ including retaining a contingency reserve, then the long term yield where there is a profit sharing model for rental will generally be a soft curve after rentals or hotel operations stabilise. On such basis, an initial rental guarantee should really not be too high or this indicates the assets are being sold at too high a value to ‘build in’ the guarantee.

Stability of the operators/asset managers Let’s assume that the normal checks have been made into the land title history, zoning and planning rules, gradient, height and shoreline set-back rules, built up area, green area ratios, engineering contingencies, insurance arrangements, asset management plans and fees, rental returns and quality of ownership options for purchasers. Then the main commercial verification process that underpins an investment decision is the relationship between the developer/asset owners and the ‘operator’, which may be a very well known brand or a more boutique or lesser known asset manager. Developers will generally not disclose all the details of the commercial arrangements, but ought to disclose the term of the agreement, any unusual terms which might affect

a rental programme and any cost implications, which may affect an owner in a rental programme. In some cases, unfortunately, it seems that very ‘loose’ arrangements are made, or even just discussed between developers and operators; brands and logos may be misplaced on brochures and websites, leading purchasers to mistakenly believe that an investment is more stable than it actually is. However, if a solid well-prepared structure has been set up by the developer with an operator, then a certain amount of confidence can be implied from the fact of the willingness of the parties to commit to asset development and management – and with disclosure on the key terms of the arrangement and properly disclosed details – to provide comfort to add further security.

As high season approaches, check the background of the brochures carefully. Be wary of the agents ‘pumping out hot-sales’ when they don’t even appear to know the ownership structure, compliance levels of laws relating to a project – but may instead be touting cut and paste contracts they have picked up along their travels as ‘well prepared’ agreements. LIVING. FISH THE EXOTIC

FISH THE EXOTIC

The Andaman Islands for ‘Magnificent Marlin’ and so much more

When we talk about salt water fishing and big game fishing in Asia, there is one place that stands out above the rest: the Andaman and Nicobar Islands of India. These pristine waters have not been subject to the heavy commercial fishing that has put a lot of pressure on fish stocks around Thailand and surrounding waters. Having personally fished these beautiful waters frequently I can vouch for the amazing fishing available for countless different species.

There are many fishing opportunities available through severall different sources. G Go trolling lli for f monster Marlin, M li Sailfish and Wahoo, jigging and popping for Giant Trevally and Dogtooth Tuna or even bottom fishing for Grouper and numerous bottom dwellers. With both Black and Blue Marlin readily available to 800lbs+, the predominant technique for both species is trolling lures. The bait and switch method used in other billfish hotspots doesn’t seem to produce as well here. The best way to capitalise on fishing this area is to get four or five good friends together and plan a live aboard Marlin trip for five days or a week. Sharing costs is a great way to make these dream trips affordable. I have been fortunate to book two of these trips through www.blueoceans.club on the Deja Blue, a beautiful 60-foot Bertram. This is a very well-equipped and well-maintained boat, which is essential when fishing so far away from the mainland. Captain John Pearce (reelhooker@hotmail.com) and his crew will not only put you on fish, but take care of everything from onboard laundry service to delicious Thai and international food. There is no WiFi or telephone service other than a satellite phone for emergencies on this type of trip so it is very peaceful – when it’s not your turn at the rods, of course.

LIVING. FISH THE EXOTIC

When you can see land, the scenery is stunning and you will never forget the sunset behind Barren Island, an active volcano, or the sunrise at Narcondam, a dormant one. If a live aboard isn’t your cup of tea, then I would suggest talking to Darran at www.gamefishingasia.com or Akshay at www.andamanangler.com, who both run truly professional and safe outfits for jigging and popping. These two techniques are both extremely exciting ways to fish. Explosive takes on poppers from GTs and jigging rods can almost be ripped out of your hands by powerful Doggies. This is the norm for any outing. Fish location and reading tides are important to catching, so again a good crew and well maintained equipment are key. These trips are from smaller boats, which return to port at sunset. Whether you return to a Port Blair hotel each night or stay in a beach resort on Havelock Island for one or two nights both are great ways to enjoy some delicious Indian delicacies washed down with a cold Kingfisher beer. Catch and release is essential to maintain all fisheries. Everyone I have recommended abides by strict catch and release practices with the exception of a few smaller fish kept for onboard meals or for bait. All fishing adventures mentioned are accessed from the town of Port Blair India with frequent flights through Chennai, India. The Andamans are currently opening their doors to tourists, with online visas easily purchased and restrictions for international vessels staying more than 30 days being lifted. This area is truly a saltwater fisherman’s paradise and should not be overlooked by any serious angling enthusiast.

Sapan Hin

95 D4

This is a public park located by the sea at the end of Phuket Road. There’s an old dredger-shaped monument called (somewhat unimaginatively) the ‘60 Year Mine Monument’, which was built on the headland at the southern end of Phuket Road in 1969. This monument commemorates one Captain Edward Thomas Miles, an Australian who brought the first metal ore-dredger to Phuket in 1909, hence the ‘60 year’ bit. In former times, Sapan Hin was regarded as the gateway of Phuket because the promontory was the chief trading port for freighters. As time went by, more land was reclaimed and developed into parks and public facilities, which now include a sports centre, large playing fields, restaurants and the island’s main boxing stadium. It’s also the site of two colleges – Phuket Community College and Phuket Vocational College. Every day many Phuket residents visit Sapan Hin to jog or just to enjoy walking along the mangrove-lined paths. In the evenings people turn out to play tennis, basketball, volleyball, soccer, lawn bowling and takraw. Others come to picnic and enjoy snacks and drinks available from the small market. At the south end of Sapan Hin is the Kiew Tian Shrine, which plays a significant role in the annual Phuket Vegetarian Festival; all the street processions end here. To get to Saphin Hin just hop in a Tuk- Tuk or taxi; they all know it.

INFORMATION.THINGS TO DO

Old Phuket Town A hundred years ago, Phuket was a prosperous tin mining town and was an international centre with a large community of Chinese and Europeans. They built beautiful homes in the style called SinoPortuguese – terraced townhouses with narrow frontages and accommodations stretching back from the road. The beautifully furnished interiors often included walled gardens and Chinese inspired decorations. Explore Rommanee, Talang, Yaowarat and Dibuk Roads, where the buildings have been lovingly restored to their former glory and now feature antique shops, speciality restaurants and more.
