Phuket's fame and fortune is founded primarily from its stunning beaches – and they are still the fundamental reason most, if not all, holidaymakers hit this tropical island year after year. But how many are there? Where are they? Which is the most beautiful? Why? On this page, and on Page 7, you'll find most of Phuket's beaches. The number in the blue circle corresponds to the same number on the Page 9 map, making it easy to plan your beach itinerary. We recommend renting a car – and driving carefully!

“The Best Yet!” Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek

Photos by Guy Nowell / Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek 2018

The 15th Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek 2018 will go down in the history books as the best yet. Held 18 – 22 July, the 450 plus sailors and friends enjoyed four days of consistently strong wind which made for some fast and exhilarating racing around Phuket’s southeast coast and islands. Organised by Media Business Services, the regatta has grown in stature and is known in yacht clubs from Australia to the United Kingdom, and from South Africa to Chile, regularly attracting sailors from more than 20 countries to compete.

Elsewhere in the Cruising class, long-time competitors BeauX Esprits managed to get the better of last year’s winner, Lady Bubbly, to claim the class title at their tenth attempt. The popularity of multihulls in South East Asia, and Phuket in particular, means Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek always attracts a strong turnout. This year there were 17 multihulls racing in four classes (Multihull Racing, Firefly 850, Pulse 600, Multihull Cruising) and the excellent conditions saw many flying a hull on the racetrack.

A weather warning by the Thai Meteorological Department the day before the regatta kicked-off raised some concerns, but come race time the 1-2 metre sea swells and near 20knots of breeze was welcomed with excitement by the 38strong fleet of competitors. In the monohull classes (IRC I, IRC II and Cruising) racing was close. Two all-female crews had flown in from Australia and were competing on chartered yachts in IRC II while in IRC I, four evenly-matched 40-footers were having their own divisional battle behind the TP52 of Ray Roberts, Team Hollywood, which proved too much to handle, flying off the starts and leaving everyone in their wake. http://www.windowonphuket.com/ windowonphuket.com

The two trimarans Fugazi and Bladerunner IX, while very different in design, enjoyed some exceptionally close racing on handicap and in the end it was the smaller of the two, Bladerunner IX, that got the better to claim the Multihull Racing honours. An impressive performance from the multinational crew on Twin Sharks saw them runaway winners in the Firefly 850 class and with it they sealed their sixth consecutive victory at Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek. A hard crew to beat and a record that looks set to stand for a very long time (unless, of course, they extend it themselves in 2019!). What makes Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek so unique and is a big contributor to its success, is the venue. The 5-star Cape Panwa Hotel is the ideal host for this destination regatta. The four lavish beachside parties are second-to-none, the onsite accommodation and facilities are first-class, and the idyllic white sand beach and private pier access make Cape Panwa Hotel an exceptional regatta host. “Having talked to most of the competitors this year, all are saying that this was the best yet. We had a great fleet of racers and cruisers competing this year with many returning competitors joined by new faces from far and wide. Interest from international sailors and the number of chartered boats continues to grow, and right now happy sailors are returning to their homes all around the world and telling their friends what a great time they had at Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek, and what a wonderful sailing destination Phuket is,” commented Byron Jones, Managing Director of organisers Media Business Services Co. Ltd.

The 15th anniversary Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek will live long in the memories of the competitors – the great winds, great racing and great parties is an unbeatable formula. For those looking for some warm weather sailing in the tropics in the month of July, head to Phuket for the 16th Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek which will take place 17 - 21 July, 2019 at Cape Panwa Hotel. n Australian national with an impressive work history under his belt, Michal Zitek was recently appointed by Banyan Tree Hotels & Resorts as Area General Manager for Angsana Laguna Phuket. He has been tasked to drive and lead the strategic growth of the brand as well as oversee all of the Angsana brand operations in Phuket, including Angsana Laguna Phuket, Angsana Villas Resort Phuket and Angsana Vacation Club. While this may seem no easy feat, Michal Zitek is certainly up for the task.

A

“To me, that was a challenging opportunity, but it was an exciting opportunity too,” says Michal, “to help develop something that hadn’t quite found its feet yet, and be a part of a brand new resort in a brand new environment.”

Originally from Sydney, Michal’s career in the hospitality industry began when he was still a high school student. Working a part-time job in the catering sector, Michal realised he very much enjoyed the element of the job as every day was different and he had the chance to meet and interact with a large variety of people.

To me, that was a challenging opportunity, but it was an exciting opportunity too – to help develop something that hadn’t quite found its feet yet, and be a part of a brand new resort in a brand new environment.

“This was my first introduction into how to make memories,” Michal reflects, “and how to generate experiences for people.” Michal decided to further his education by attending hotel school in Sydney; this decision was pivotal as it helped shape his career path from a young man working in catering, to where he is now, an established general manager of a world-renowned five star resort brand. His first assignment out of hotel school was working in the F&B department of Park Royal Hotel, which turned out to be an excellent training ground that opened the door for many more opportunities, including a promotion and a first international move to New Zealand. While Michal notes that this move was not on his agenda, he also states, “Sometimes when there is a knock on the door, you are better to answer it than to let the person walk past.” The door continued to knock for Michal, and over the years he has had the chance to be apart of some absolutely wonderful hotel teams, including a tour in 2004-2005 with Holiday Inn that brought him to Thailand. Once settled in Asia, opportunities continued to find their way to Michal. From the Holiday Inn on Phi Phi Island, he made his way to the luxurious Regent Hotel in Malaysia to the Pan-Pacific in Singapore and then later in Bangkok. In Bangkok, Michal was surrounded by a lot of movers and shakers in the industry, and it was not long before he was approached and given another outstanding opportunity.

Sometimes when there is a knock on the door, you are better to answer it than to let the person walk past. Michal left Bangkok for central Vietnam, where he worked for Laguna Lang Co, the sister resort to the famous Laguna Phuket. Captivated by the location as well as the Vietnamese culture, Michal once again settled into the resort environment.

Fast forward to his role as Area General Manager for Angsana Laguna Phuket, overseeing the brand’s luxurious hotel, the resort villas and the vacation club. It is a time of immense growth and expansion for the brand, but also a time of excitement and high morale amongst the staff.

There is no doubt that working as a general manager in the hospitality industry can be challenging, and when asked about work/life balance, Michal has an excellent response. “Honestly, this career choice isn’t necessarily about work/ life balance. It’s about a lifestyle choice, because your life becomes your work and your work becomes your life. “I think the essence of hospitality is about being part of the venue. Therefore, my character and personality has to become part of the product as well. Going with that, there are some longer hours, but I think it can be more rewarding as it goes side-by-side with the memories and experiences you can create for guests. You have to find your own balance, and one good part is that the job also gives you flexibility.”

Honestly, this career choice isn’t necessarily about work/life balance. It’s about a lifestyle choice, because your life becomes your work and your work becomes your life. Angsana’s company philosophy is very much focused on its associates and the team that management works with, mentoring, guiding and encouraging each team member’s personal development. The company believes that the better the team is, the more confident they are and the more empowered they are, the better the service is going to be. Keeping that company philosophy in mind, Michal strives to keep both his associates and the guests of Angsana Laguna Phuket happy. With twenty-five years of hospitality service and experience to back up his words and actions, as well as leadership qualities and experience in a variety of properties in Asia and beyond, there is no doubt that Angsana Laguna Phuket will continue to flourish with new general manager, Michal Zitek, at its helm. PHUKET’S VEGETARIAN FESTIVAL What’s it all about? Each year, at this time, the area around Phuket’s Fresh Market becomes congested with food stalls and everywhere is festooned with red lanterns and Chinese dragons, all centred on the Jui Tui shrine. One of the fascinating aspects of Phuket’s cultural traditions is the complex fusion of Chinese religious beliefs, with those of the original inhabitants of the island.

travel.Vegetarian Festival

It all began in the early 1900s, when tin ore was discovered in the Kathu area and hundreds of Hokkien Chinese were drafted in to do the mining. They either brought their families with them or intermarried with the locals. A thriving community blossomed and, in 1825, the Governor Praya Jerm moved the provincial capital from Ta Reua to Kathu. The Chinese community had such critical mass that an itinerant Chinese opera company visited to entertain them. Here the story gets a little confused, but basically the whole area was struck by a major epidemic and almost everybody except the opera players became sick.

The tradition of processions was thus born. On the first night of the ninth lunar month, the sacred 10-metre lantern pole is raised to facilitate the arrival of the gods, and at midnight, nine lanterns are suspended, one for each god.

Following their beliefs, the players had stuck to their religious calendar, which at this time of year required that they observe a strict vegetarian diet and offer prayers to two Chinese gods, Kiew Ong Tai Teh and Yok Ong Sone Teh. The residents attributed their invulnerability to these religious observances. http://www.windowonphuket.com/ windowonphuket.com

These religious zealots transform themselves into a trancelike state and perform acts of mortification which range from climbing ladders with steel blades for rungs, walking across red hot coals and immersing themselves in hot oil.

An alternative explanation may be that since Kathu was a swampy jungle and it was the time of the monsoon rains, the visitors may have introduced a malarial strain – to which they themselves were immune – to the local mosquitoes, which thrived in the damp conditions. When the rains stopped the insects’ breeding ponds disappeared and the epidemic abated naturally. Be that as it may. The following year, the Haio Lan and Lian Tui regalia and sacred scripts were brought from China. When this precious cargo arrived at Bang Niao, the whole community went there to welcome the ship. The tradition of processions was thus born. On the first night of the ninth lunar month, the sacred 10-metre lantern pole is raised to facilitate the arrival of the gods, and at midnight, nine lanterns are suspended, one for each god. In a slightly anomalous add-on, the Hindu god Shiva is also believed to be present, and just to be on the safe

This year the festival will be held from 9-17 October 2018 If you wish to practise a strict observance during the festival, here are the ‘rules’: • Maintain maximum body hygiene • Use specified kitchen utensils only for the festival • Dress in white or in very light colours • Behave yourself, physically and mentally • Abstain from eating meat, fish, eggs and milk • No sexual intercourse • Stay away from alcoholic beverages and tobacco • People in mourning should not attend ceremonies • Pregnant women should not attend ceremonies Major shrine locations 58 G1

side, offerings are also made to Lam Tao and Pak Tao. The festival then continues for nine more days with much burning of incense, banging of drums and letting off of fireworks to ward off evil spirits. One of the strange and even controversial aspects of the various processions is the activities of the Ma Song or ‘possessed horses’. These religious zealots transform themselves into a trancelike state and perform acts of mortification which range from climbing ladders with steel blades for rungs, walking across red hot coals and immersing themselves in hot oil. In a further, rather gruesome, practise, adherents pierce their faces and tongues with everything from skewers to bicycle spokes to axes. Oddly enough, this self mutilation results in little bleeding or subsequent scarring. Stranger than fiction. However it’s not for the queasy so probably best not to bring the kids! For most, however, the festival isn’t so fraught. Many restaurants and stalls all over the island will fly yellow banners decorated with red script, proclaiming that they are offering authentic vegetarian dishes – and they are delicious. Somehow the cooks manage to prepare dishes which are just as tasty as normal meaty fare, but without the meat. Read online

DINING.NIKITA’S

A beach-side dining experience. On the water´s edge, serving a full range of fresh Thai seafood, international dishes oven-fresh, wood-fired pizzas.

Nikita’s Thai/Seafood/International Daily 9am until late Created by its Thai owner 23 years ago, Nikita’s enjoys a sensational location oceanside at Rawai Beach. Customers dine in a lush garden setting right at the sea’s edge with white sand underfoot and enjoy spectacular ocean and island panoramas during the day and a romantic atmosphere at night. Nikita’s boasts no fewer than 18 cocktails, but we settle for a traditional gin and tonic. A Tomato Bruschetta comes as appetizer, followed by an unusual dish, a spicy salad with glass noodles and peeled prawns. The wine list is well chosen – 12 whites and 15 reds, plus five choices available by the glass. A competitively priced Santa Alicia cabernet sauvignon from Chile – full bodied with supple tannins – provides a perfect complement to our meal. Seeking something distinctive for the main course, my friend orders a firm-fleshed and succulent Mahi-mahi (dorado). Served with a creamy white sauce laced with Thai herbs and mashed potato, it is pronounced superb. My choice is a whole, Deep-fried white snapper in fish sauce (sweet and sour sauce is also available) with a Thai inspired salad of crisp slivers of green mango and peanuts. Delectable. It is worth noting that many of the vegetables served here are sourced from Nikita’s own farm. Famous for its thin-crust pizzas – all cooked in a wood-fired oven – the choice includes classics such as Margarita with mozzarella, tomato and basil. All Nikita’s pizzas are celebrated for their lavish toppings. Then there’s English style fish and chips, coated in beer batter, a house speciality. Though Nikita’s emphasis is on seafood and international dishes, there is an impressive range of authentic Thai dishes. We finish in style with a slab of hot, dark chocolate mousse and a scoop of fragrant ice-cream. A sensational and contrasting mix of flavours, textures and temperatures. A visit to Nikita’s certainly leaves a pleasant taste in the mouth…

travel.Koh Lipe

Koh Lipe Words and photos by Lisa Lee

Koh Lipe may have lost its status as secluded paradise but there are still plenty of reasons to visit this beautiful island

The small island of Koh Lipe in the southern Andaman Sea rose to fame in the early 1990s when its unspoilt white sand beaches drew travellers from near and afar. Staying in simple bamboo beach huts and managing on just a few hours of electricity each day, they spoke of paradise found. A lot has happened on Koh Lipe since then, but the island remains a popular island getaway for both Thais and foreigners. Getting your bearings on Koh Lipe is easy. The island is tiny and it’s easy to walk from one beach to the next. Taking a triangle shape, the island has three main Sunrise Beach

beaches; by far the busiest beach is Pattaya Beach, where the water is calm for most of the year and the sand is deliciously fine. Pattaya Beach was the first to be developed and unfortunately also the first to become crowded, so expect a fair bit of hustle and bustle, not least after nightfall. Sunrise Beach is located, not surprisingly, on the long eastern side of the island and features a relaxed, laid-back vibe with very little going on after dark. On the northern coast, you will find the smaller Sunset Beach, which is home to a number of smaller, upscale resorts. Koh Lipe still wows with its white sandy beaches

Pattaya Beach was the first to be developed and unfortunately also the first to become crowded, so expect a fair bit of hustle and bustle, not least after nightfall.

Restaurants, bars and shops centre on and around Walking Street, which connects Sunrise and Pattaya beaches. Here you’ll find everything from tattoo parlours and souvenir shops to seafood barbecue joints and cafés and restaurants serving western and Thai food. For a great cup of freshly brewed coffee and something to satisfy those afternoon sugar cravings, head to Kafair, a cosy café on Walking Street; try their pancakes with maple syrup or tuck into a bowl of homemade yogurt and muesli. For dinner, don't miss King Crab, also on Walking Street. Don't expect fancy

surroundings or particularly attentive service; the focus here is on the seafood, which you choose from a display at the entrance. Simply point and tell them how you would like it prepared, then sit back and tuck into sea bass, snapper, tiger prawns, or the restaurant’s namesake, crabs. Given Koh Lipe's pristine waters, diving is a popular activity and several resorts and hotels offer PADI diving courses and dive trips to sites around Koh Lipe or surrounding Koh Adang, Koh Rawi or Koh Tong. One of the most popular dive sites is Stonehenge where large granite formations attract schools of barracudas and trevalliers as well as the occasional leopard shark or whale shark.

If diving is not your thing, why not explore the waters around Koh Lipe from the deck of one of the many long-tail boats, so called after their makeshift motors, the propellers of which sit at the end of a long shaft. There are countless long-tail boats around the island just waiting to be chartered for a daytrip of swimming, snorkelling or simply exploring these tropical waters.

ADVERTORIAL

Botanica Luxury Villas Winner of Best Luxury Villa Development Phuket at The Dot Property Thailand Awards 2017, the Botanica Luxury Villas property development boasts 21 custom-built elite residences of large open plans, bespoke design and sophistication. As exterior design characteristics in the villas don’t change, buyers are free to fulfill a wish list, with the architects and developers assisting to personalise the future owner’s dream home. Located in a desirable spot in the Bangtao/Laguna area, there is a an eight-kilometre stretch of white sandy beach close by, along with boutique shops and restaurants and an abundance of activities for the family to enjoy. Laguna Phuket Golf course and the shopping centre, Canal Village, are just minutes away. Botanica Luxury Villas is the brain child of Khun Attasit Incharooti of AAP Architecture Properties & Development, who paired his artistic vision with functionality of indoor and outdoor living space in a tropical climate to produce a unique design. One ingenious solution to create more covered space outside was to create a covered terrace that can be used as a lounge or dining area with wooden columns. This signature feature interconnects all spaces in an agreeable and appealing manner. In addition, the tiling in the front room and the terrace match, thus making for a seamless connection between the indoor and outdoor.

The villas are an ideal investment for people wishing to use them as short term rental accommodation for part of the year and use the remaining duration for personal use or family vacations. Houses of 700 square metres can host four couples plus visitors, while smaller houses of three bedrooms can accommodate three couples or more, making a comfortable and homey place for hoidaymakers. In addition, Botanica Luxury Villas can guarantee five years of rental income through these lettings, while responsibility for all aspects of holiday rental management will be achieved by an established tour operator based at the reception office. A natural stone-tiled, infinity-edge swimming pool forms the centre of each villa. Villas feature free-flowing floor plans with folding doors, transom windows above the doors and vaulted ceilings; all residences enjoy these exterior characteristics. A buyer can choose from three standard designs and the home is then custom built, ensuring future owners get a villa that suits their style. The architectural team is available to modify and enhance designs over the course of the year that it takes to build the residence. Villas are of three to five bedrooms with usable areas from 265 to 700 square metres of space. These elite homes will see natural wood blended with natural stone, imported kitchen cabinetry and high specification smart home technology. The project has a staffed reception and lobby service, along with 24-hour security. Residents may also wish to take advantage of the boutique coffee and cafĂŠ.

legal matters.Residential Commercial Letting Policy

The rights & wrongs of

Residential Commercial Letting Policy

In

the last two years or so there has been a lot of government activity in Thailand designed to tighten up on the unlawful use of residential property in a hotel context. The policy behind the tightening of review and enforcement is to level the playing field for investors who have incurred significant expense building accommodation to comply with the Building Control Act and environmental regulations, and to obtain all the necessary licenses connected with operating a hotel business. I should also mention that their corporate structure has to comply with Thai law, which is an additional layer of burden if there are foreign investors involved. There have been raids on unlicensed hostel premises, inspections of properties clearly being built in locations where hotels cannot be located, reviews of the built-up area to un-built area ratios and surveys of beach setbacks and commercial property within residential property, which must be designated as such in particular in regulated estates such as ‘Moo Baans’ under the Real Estate Development Act or condominiums under the Condominium Act. In addition to this, there has been a spate in the last five years or so of ‘disruptive businesses’, which have caused polarisation of opinion across the spectrum from complete disapproval through to gung-ho support for anything that ‘sticks it to the Man’. Many observers believe that ‘facilitators’ or ‘portal’ companies, such as Airbnb and all the new entrants in that saturated market, are shining knights and heroes of the accommodation industry because they provide so many more options for holidaymakers, especially for large groups of friends or families who may find homes to stay in instead of the smaller rooms in many hotels and serviced apartments.

However, there is another, more dangerous side, to this story. A side that many don’t wish to think about or apply their minds to when it comes to their own freedom of choice versus appropriate regulation and supervision of those responsible for providing lodging on a commercial basis. Although there will be many outstanding properties available on the new disruptive portals, there will also be many that will have defective dangerous wiring, no emergency exits for fires, no extinguishers, rodent infestations, asbestos, poorly maintained air conditioning units, dangerous swimming pools with unchecked chlorine levels and a hotwired pump room. Noting this non-exhaustive list, it is clear that lodging for commercial purposes ought to be regulated. If the current regulation isn’t good enough, then many will have to wait for it to catch up with modern practices. However, it is for Thailand and its government to balance regulation and choose how much and how to regulate lodging, as this is a matter of national interest and not a matter to be determined arbitrarily by say, a small management company that carries out rentals on a project that has no licensing or compliance whatsoever. The hotel business in Thailand is clearly linked strongly to its economy as is tourism in general. Making this situation somewhat worse is the modern phenomena of fake, or just defective, scare-tactic information. If you conduct an internet search on hotel licenses and accommodation you will come across all sorts of news articles, supposed ‘learned’ articles citing huge tracts of law that will make the average property investor nod off into their Coffee Martini.

legal matters.Residential Commercial Letting Policy

There is an overload of damming information citing exemptions for room counts, lack of clarity on whether rooms in a villa are ‘rooms’ in the exemption, sometimes no mention of the processes of obtaining environmental consent, confusing explanations of how to apply for a hotel license and omissions relating to the declaration process that a property isn’t being used in a hotel programme.

53

“Worse still, some developers appear to be promoting property which hasn’t been built and hasn’t been designed to conform with building control requirements, comprising promises of returns entirely based on rental returns if the property is used in a hotel programme - and are apparently able to sell the units like hot cakes because they have used the bait of a ‘guaranteed rental return’. Some readers may wonder why I am not providing a clear succinct guide on whether their prospective residential, or in fact commercial/residential property, will or will not be legal under existing laws. The reason is I haven’t is that it depends on many factors, which have to be checked properly.

Desmond Hughes By Desmond Hughes, Senior Partner of Hughes Krupica. Hughes Krupica is a law firm which specialises in Real Estate; Construction; Hospitality; Corporate; Commercial; Personal Injury; Dispute Resolution; and Litigation, operating in Bangkok and Phuket, servicing clients in relation to their business activities in Thailand and in other regions of Asia. www.hugheskrupica.com

Many legal articles end with an advertisement style – “come and see us to check the position”, but I don’t need to even say that. If you are buying property which is going to be used as part of a hotel oriented use, one night rentals, rentals for less than 30 days, then you had better check properly that you know what you are doing – and that the seller/developer knows what it is doing. The government does know the position of many unlicensed projects, and is simply working its way through at its own pace to impose the regulations, which it has done with a pretty fair hand, including a moratorium period it offered unlicensed projects a while back. As always, I remain a positive but cautious observer and participant in the property market in Phuket Read online and further afield across Thailand. I know many developers who spend money on internal and external legal advice and really take care to get things right. Try and find out who they are when you are browsing the very nicely presented brochures.

Exploring

Phang Nga Bay Located in between Phuket Island and the Thai mainland, Phang Nga Bay is a stunning bay featuring magnificent limestone karsts rising vertically out of the bay’s waters. A popular day trip from Phuket, Phang Nga Bay has much to offer with regards to sightseeing opportunities and off-the-beaten track adventures.

James Bond Island Perhaps the most famous island in Phang Nga Bay, James Bond Island is effectively two towering limestone karsts known as Koh Khao Ping Ghan and Koh Tapu in Thai. James Bond Island gained its name, and subsequent popularity, after being featured in the James Bond movie The Man with the Golden Gun in the early 1970s. James Bond Island is one of the must-see destinations for those visiting southern Thailand. James Bond Island itself is a nature lovers’ dream. The Island is covered in lush, verdant vegetation and it’s interesting to note that succulents and cactus varieties actually grow out of the limestone. A steep pathway has been cleared through the centre of the island, making exploration easier. The pathway also gives way to some spectacular peekaboo views of Phang Nga Bay. There’s a small summit halfway up, which is wonderful for photographs. This area tends to get crowded with visitors, so it’s best to practice patience if you want to capture a decent digital image.

Although James Bond Island is quite small, there are lots of things to see and explore. The limestone karsts are filled with nooks and crannies to crawl into and take photographs from. However, do exercise caution and be careful as the morning mist can cause the limestone karsts to become very slippery. Local vendors have set up selling the usual fare on the island’s east coast, where people admire the unusual shape of Koh Tapu (‘Nail Island’). There are very basic restroom facilities and the vendors do sell water and other refreshments. Arriving early to mid-morning at James Bond Island is best, as it tends to become quite crowded and overrun with day-trippers in the afternoon. A popular activity on the way to James Bond Island is stopping to sea kayak through the various limestone karsts and caves that dot Phang Nga Bay. While this is generally included in any package tour to James Bond Island, it’s also possible to sea kayak on a solo tour of the bay. Simply speak with the long-tail boat driver, and he will be able to help arrange this activity.

Koh Panyi Koh Panyi is a charming fishing village consisting of stilt houses over the waters of the bay. The village is fully functional and is even home to a school as well as a floating football pitch and a charming mosque. When visiting Koh Panyi, it’s highly recommended to break free from the crowds and wander the back areas of the village. Here, visitors are able to catch a glimpse into local life and how the residents of Koh Panyi spend their day-to-day lives. Wandering the back areas of the village is a real eye opener. Visitors can see laundry being hung out to dry, young children riding their bicycles across the wooden plank bridges, and the elderly sitting around having a chat while drinking Thai iced tea. It’s important to take note of the signs hanging overhead as the back areas of the village turn into an intricate maze. The well-placed signs, written in English, serve to help visitors find their way back to the pier for departure. The local residents of Koh Panyi are Muslim, and it’s estimated that about 360 families live in the settlement. The history of Koh Panyi is an interesting one. The stilt house village was actually built by Indonesia fishermn, and then settled by two seafaring Muslim families from Java. Today’s local residents of Koh Panyi are the descendants of those two families.

While most of the local residents of Koh Panyi earn a living from the fishing trade, the island itself thrives on tourism. Throughout the day, Koh Panyi hums with the sound of boats coming to and from the island. The boats drop tourists off to dine on fresh seafood at the restaurants closest to the main pier, while locals board long-tail boats and go about their daily lives. It’s an interesting scene that further enhances the charm of Koh Panyi. Do make it a point to stop here while exploring Phang Nga Bay as the village is really interesting and gives an authentic taste of life in Thailand.

The panorama views from Samet Nangshe Viewpoint are absolutely breathtaking

Samet Nangshe Viewpoint Showcasing breathtaking views across Phang Nga Bay, Samet Nangshe is a local viewpoint that has gone from being an unknown hilltop to one of the most popular tourist attractions, centred in the tiny village of Tha Yu, tambon Khlong Kien, in Phang Nga province. ‘Discovered’ by a Thai photographer, Samet Nangshe has risen in popularity on social media and is currently one of the most visited locations outside of Phuket. The views from atop Samet Nanghse are outstanding, while the location is filled with unique photo opportunities. Getting There A wide variety of Phuket tour operators have daily tours to Phang Nga Bay. Most provide transfer from hotel and guesthouse accommodation, while boats leave from Bang Rong Pier, near Ao Po. However, if you’re looking for more of a slow-moving local adventure, it’s highly recommended to make your own way to Phang Nga Bay. Drive yourself, stop off on the way to buy fresh fruit from a roadside stall, and once you’re in Phang Nga, negotiate a day rate with a long-tail boat driver who’ll be happy to ferry you to both James Bond Island and Koh Panyi. On the way back to Phuket in the late afternoon, stop off at Samet Nangshe for the viewpoint’s sensational views.

Samet Nangshe consists of two viewpoints – a lower viewpoint and a higher one. Each offers spectacular views of Phang Nga Bay and the towering limestone karsts that jut out from the water. Although the viewpoint is stunning at most times of the day, it’s particularly beautiful at sunrise. If you’re interested in sleeping atop Samet Nangshe, you can rent a tent for approximately 150 baht. There is an entry fee to ascend the hill to the top of the viewpoint. Parking is available, and the family of the land owner sells some local snacks and refreshments at the bottom of the pathway.

Living. FISH THE EXOTIC

FISH THE EXOTIC

ADVERTORIAL

THE FACTS ON FISHING IN PHUKET AND SURROUNDING AREAS Exotic Fishing Thailand would like to welcome you to the new fishing page for WINDOW on Phuket magazine. Fishing is a great sport that can be appreciated on many different levels. Whether it’s professionals fishing in tournaments or families enjoying fun fishing on their holidays, the popular sport has something for everyone. In future issues we will give insight into both sport fishing in the surrounding Andaman Sea and freshwater fishing in beautiful man-made lakes as well as the natural lakes and rivers of the nearby Khao Sok area. Our main focus is to provide accurate information so you can make informed decisions on how to spend your valuable recreational time and hard-earned money. Fishing is not a perfect science, but a well-informed angler is usually a more successful and happy angler. We will openly share tips and techniques on where, when and how to catch as many of your target species as possible. Watch for interviews with credible captains, professional guides and resort owners who are committed to your fishing success. On the freshwater fishing scene, our focus this month is on one of the best-known fishing lakes in the ‘Greater

Phuket’ area – Exotic Fishing Thailand, the beautiful lake resort conveniently located just one hour north of Phuket International Airport and one hour twenty minutes from Krabi and Khao Lak. ‘EFT’, as it is commonly known amongst regulars, boasts a 10-acre man-made lake in a beautiful setting, surrounded by stunning limestone karsts and wild jungle. The lake’s inhabitants include over 60 different exotic fish species, the largest specimens being Arapaima and Giant Mekong Catfish to over 160 kg. The bait fishing method is used, with conventional carp style equipment and rigs specifically designed to suit the monster fish lurking in the lake’s 5-metre depths. All equipment and a reasonable amount of bait is provided, along with direction and/or assistance from enthusiastic fishing guides. All fishing is ‘catch and release’; no ‘lure fishing’ or outside equipment is allowed in an effort to guarantee the safe release of the fish. You fish from comfortable lakeside fishing salas, built for privacy and shelter from the elements. If you are interested in multiple days fishing, luxury Mountain View accommodation is available in modern, spacious and convenient bungalows. The lakeside restaurant is well known for its Thai and international dishes, which can also be served lakeside. windowonphuket.com

The temple, located on Thepkrasattri Road, 20 kilometres from Phuket City, also houses Wat Phra Tong Museum, which has a collection of ancient artefacts from Phuket locals.

Surfing The waves at most beaches, while not huge, are predictable and fun to ride during the southwest monsoon season (May to October). Even if you’re a beginner, you’ll find the beaches at Kata, Kata Noi, Karon and Nai Harn ideal for honing your skills, while some beaches offer surf shops and tuition. The sea during the southwest monsoon season can be dangerous, with strong rip tides in many places. If you are a beginner and/or not a strong swimmer, please pay careful attention to instructions issued by life guards and obey red warning flags prohibiting swimming.

Snorkelling Crystal clear waters, beautiful coral reefs and a prolific marine life; it’s an underwater paradise. The best time is between November and April, when there’s very little rain and the sea is clear and calm. Most of the west coast beaches, especially the smaller ones, offer good snorkelling – as do the islands off the southeast coast of Phuket windowonphuket.com

Living.Phuket Days: Adventure at Nai Harn Beach

Adventure at Nai Harn Beach Extract from Phuket Days: Life in the Island Fast Lane by Patrick Campbell

T

here were some places that had, early on, convinced my ageing psyche that they really were the place to be. Nai Harn Beach was one such location. Today, Wan and I were going to picnic on the beach. We had been doing it for so long , it had become a sort of ritual. We knew from past experience that the best place to go was under the casuarina pines, where you could move your deck chair into light or shade, as the sun’s rays filtered through the high branches. Wan, a model of efficiency, had packed the food in plastic boxes: a home-made chicken massaman curry with peanuts , boiled eggs, crisp stalks of Chinese kale, rice, a fresh coconut. Plus her own supply of nam prik . That wasn’t all. She also put a large carboy of fresh water in the back of the truck, conscious that I loved a shower after a sea-dip that left me feeling as salty and desiccated as an old kipper. Wan sat, lotus-style on the woven mat she had brought, sprinkled powder around its edges to deter the wood ants, and dispensed food. Later, we would sunbathe on the beach and watch the world go by: prosperous-looking, portly couples on their daily constitutional from The Nai Harn, an eccentric Englishman exercising his three Jack Russell terriers, gay poseurs showing off their tanned, sculptured bodies fresh from a session in the gym, sinuous, bikiniclad Russian beauties, fully clothed Thai families, the childrens’ tee shirts still dripping salt water. Over the past decade or so, Nai Harn Beach had undergone several transformations. Like a giant bulldozer, the 2004 tsunami had cleared all before it: every lounger, beach tent, drinks stall, all the moneymaking paraphernalia had gone. Only nature, in the guise of deep-rooted sea almonds and stilt palms higher up on the dunes, had resisted the inundation. But slowly, perhaps inevitably, almost unnoticed, the man-made evidences had re-appeared. Unseen termites colonising a new site. The restaurants beyond the casuarinas, damaged but not destroyed by the flooding, had started to encroach, with tables and chairs set once again among the pines. More permanent structures had followed. Down on the beach itself, the march of loungers and parasols and massage tents had started again in earnest .

At a stroke, the new political regime changed all that. A massive “clean-up” of Phuket’s west coast beaches was ordered in 2016, and Nai Harn, along with Kata, Kamala, Surin and Karon, was returned, more-or-less, to its pristine state. The sunbeds and parasols, the massage shacks, the drinks vendors, disappeared once more. So far, so good. Now it was time for a swim. It was a grand day for a dip. Red warning flags were stuck in the sand in the middle of the beach, so I walked along the sand, newly moistened by the high tide, to The Nai Harn resort end of the shore where the sea was always benign. Often I went snorkelling there, for the rocks that made up the headland still harboured plenty of coral. And where there was healthy coral, there were always reef fish in abundance – trigger fish, wrasse, damsel, angel and banner fish. Today, however, I just wanted to swim. I waded out, dived through the breakers, into the calm, limpid waters beyond and swam. 200 metres out, I luxuriated in the calm of the moment. Hardly a sound. Ethereal. The people on the shore looked like Lilliputians, beyond them a dark green screen of casuarinas trees. Flanking the bay were gaunt rocky headlands, with stands of coconuts planted high on the hillside amid verdant trees. Looking seawards, I took in the arc of bay and blue, blue sea, the concave of a sky coming to meet the ocean. I trod water, then decided to swim east across part of the bay. I counted four hundred strokes. Carried further than I had realised by the cross currents, I decided it was time to head in, to strike for home. But as I approached the shore, I started to struggle. I was making no progress. The shore was not getting any closer. There were no huge waves, but the sea was agitated, almost boiling. I had been in the water now for half an hour and was beginning to flag, to feel the build-up of lactic acid in my legs, to run out of puff. The tow had taken me all the way to the dangerous centre of the beach where twin tides met and collided. I was in the neck of a rip and I didn’t know how to escape its watery embrace.

Living.Phuket Days: Adventure at Nai Harn Beach

“Don’t panic, don’t swallow water”, I kept saying to myself. “Stay calm. Try to save energy. Maybe, it will go away…” Suddenly there was a cry. It was Wan, shouting and waving her arms. Just like her behaviour on the morning of the tsunami. Always vigilant, she had sensed I might be in trouble, and she had run off to alert the lifeguard. What a woman to have in an emergency! The lifeguard came running out with a surfboard attached to a rope. He waded into the surf, and tossed the board in my direction. Thankfully, I managed to grab it and hold on. No more than 30 yards out, but it had still been touch and go. It had nearly been go... “Well, said Cornish friend Jack over a beer. “You were lucky. You hadn’t swallowed any water – yet. But another time you’ll know what to do. Don’t fight it. Go with the outward flow until it weakens and then swim at right angles to the current.” “The funny thing, Jack, is that I knew that part of the beach was dodgy, but didn’t twig that I had drifted so far towards it.” “Appearance can be deceptive at sea. Good job the lifeguard was on duty. There’s a real concern, at the moment, over their role. Their budget’s been cut

– by ten per cent – for the next three years. There have been literally hundreds of drownings in Phuket in recent years. The figures are getting worse, not better...” [Editor’s note: since Phuket Days was written, the lifeguard situation as worsened and become more confused. There is currently no uniform, trained, lifeguard service across all Phuket, often risky, beaches.] “Yes, Jack, and I heard that ISLA –the international lifeguard organisation, has openly criticised the lifeguard service here, saying it does not meet required standards. Low salaries, not enough lifeguards, inadequate equipment and training, too many fatalities. Not good news.” “But they can do ‘sweet FA’ if people don’t heed the warnings. It’s a sad fact that most Thais can’t swim, nor all those Chinese tourists, many of whom have never even seen the ocean before. Yet they still wade in and get knocked off their feet by a sudden wave. That’s all it takes.” “Ah”, I replied.”‘The murderous innocence of the sea’ One my favourite quotes. WB Yeats, dear boy”. Read online
