fficials this week went into high gear to highlight statefunded workers compensation available to legally-registered migrant workers in the fallout after a building collapse at a condo-style resort in Rawai crushed to death three Myanmar workers and injured eight others. The still-under-construction twostorey reception building of La Vita Phuket Resort, being built by developer VIP Thailand under its VIP Mercury brand, collapsed at about

2pm last Sunday (Aug 11). Rescue workers were quickly on site and had eight Myanmar workers rushed to hospital while the search for three more continued. One body was reclaimed from the rubble within hours, but it wasn’t until 2:30am Monday that rescue workers who laboured all through the night recovered the body of Min Naing, 36. The third body was finally found at about 9am Monday, but took rescue workers 90 minutes to remove it from under the fallen concrete slabs. The first and third bodies recovered were identified as Pay Thee, 38, and Tin Tun, 36.

The site was soon sealed off and declared a “danger area”, while Forensic Police began their investigation Chalong Police Deputy Chief Lt Col Somsak Sopakarn vowed that charges will be pressed for the deadly building collapse. “We are waiting for an investigation report by the Forensic Police because our investigation officers lack expert knowledge about construction,” he explained. “The report is expected to be sent quickly because of the motivation from high-ranking officers and the number of dead and injured,” he added.

Jak Phanchoopet, Adviser to the Thai Minister of Labour ML Chatumongol Sonakul, and Kyaw Soe Wai, the Labour Attache at the Myanmar embassy in Bangkok, were both in Phuket on Wednesday (Aug 14) to visit the eight workers injured in the collapse – and to attend the funerals of the three workers who died.
