While Volvo Ocean Race organisers have been trying to attract more female sailors, Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek’s recent work in this area is also paying off. In addition to an increase in female sailors across the classes, the Sailescapes Farrgo Ladies team, who finished second in IRC Racing II last year, are back and will be up against another all ladies crew from Australia – this time from Perth – who will also be racing another Farr 1104. Multihulls are also signing up in numbers. The five locallybased one-design Corsair Pulse 600s are all chartered and a new Stealth from Asia Catamarans’ yard is believed to be joining the rest of the catamarans and trimarans in Multihull Racing, while the Firefly 850 Sports One Design class looks set to exceed last year in size. “The multihull fleet is looking strong, and we expect the numbers to be similar or perhaps even more than last year’s record. One area we are keen to grow is the Multihull Cruising class which we introduced for the first time last year. We have already received entries from two, and a pledge from one other, including last year’s winner DaVinci, and we welcome expressions of interest from any other multihull cruisers in the region who wish to enjoy some fun, scenic racing off Phuket’s southeast coast,” added Jones.

Tucked high into a hill and boasting phenomenal views over Phuket and the local neighborhood, Wat Koh Sirey is an unusual, yet interesting, Buddhist temple adorned with golden Buddha statues. Nestled amongst the various shrubs and trees, the temple is equally peaceful if not a bit overworn which adds to its charm. Many of the golden Buddha statues housed at Wat Koh Sirey appear to be in elevated rooms on the sides of the temple, while others are on the outdoor walkway around the temple. Set against the bold backdrop of the jungle and sea, the outdoor statues provide a vantage point for dramatic photographs awash in gold, blue and green.

Inside Wat Koh Sirey, there is a reclining golden Buddha. Although not as impressive as other similar statues found across Thailand, this particular statue is lovely nonetheless and adds a nice touch to this rather rustic temple. Intricate paintings depicting scenes from the teachings of Buddha and his life can also be found inside.

Perhaps the most intriguing fact about Wat Koh Sirey is that on its grounds there sits a giant golden rock, which is actually a replica of the Kyaiktiyo Pagoda in Burma. It was built by local Thai and Burmese construction workers and builders for the Burmese community. The golden rock indeed adds a nice touch to the temple. Sea Gypsy Village Situated on Laem Tukkae (Gecko Cape) is a ramshackle development that is home to approximately 2,000 sea-roaming people known in Thai as Chao Lay, or sea gypsies. These indigenous people call themselves Urak Lawoi and share a Malay-influenced language and similar facial and physical features to other tribes up and down the Andaman coast. The sea gypsy village presents an educational opportunity to immerse yourself in the culture of the Urak Lawoi and watch from the sidelines as these interesting people go about their daily lives. Continuous development on Thailandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s beaches and remote islands, as well as well stricter fishing regulations in national park waters, have forced these once nomadic people to settle in villages such as the one here in Koh Sirey.

The staple income of the village still comes from fishing, but many of the men drive longtail boats which take tourists to the waters off of Phuket. Often times, the village women set up stalls selling handicrafts and cultured pearl jewelry. While the day-to-day life of the sea gypsies makes for interesting photographs, do remember that this is not a human zoo. If you would like to take some photographs, it is always best to ask with a smile before you snap the shot. Chances are you will walk away with stunning photographs of these unique people if you are polite.

This is known as Monkey Viewpoint, and although it is a tad dirty, it is a great place to see monkeys in the wild in Phuket. At Monkey Viewpoint, it is possible to buy bananas and peanuts for a few baht to feed the monkeys. The monkeys are cute; there is no doubt about that. However, it is best to remember that while they are used to being fed and are accustomed to human interaction, they are still wild animals. It is best not to get too close and, in the event that one of the bigger monkeys grabs your bag of bananas, a safe bet is to let them have the whole thing! Nikita’s Thai/Seafood/International Daily 9am until late Created by its Thai owner 23 years ago, Nikita’s enjoys a sensational location oceanside at Rawai Beach. Customers dine in a lush garden setting right at the sea’s edge with white sand underfoot and enjoy spectacular ocean and island panoramas during the day and a romantic atmosphere at night. Nikita’s boasts no fewer than 18 cocktails, but we settle for a traditional gin and tonic. A Tomato Bruschetta comes as appetizer, followed by an unusual dish, a spicy salad with glass noodles and peeled prawns. The wine list is well chosen – 12 whites and 15 reds, plus five choices available by the glass. A competitively priced Santa Alicia cabernet sauvignon from Chile – full bodied with supple tannins – provides a perfect complement to our meal. Seeking something distinctive for the main course, my friend orders a firm-fleshed and succulent Mahi-mahi (dorado). Served with a creamy white sauce laced with Thai herbs and mashed potato, it is pronounced superb. My choice is a whole, Deep-fried white snapper in fish sauce (sweet and sour sauce is also available) with a Thai inspired salad of crisp slivers of green mango and peanuts. Delectable. It is worth noting that many of the vegetables served here are sourced from Nikita’s own farm. Famous for its thin-crust pizzas – all cooked in a wood-fired oven – the choice includes classics such as Margarita with mozzarella, tomato and basil. All Nikita’s pizzas are celebrated for their lavish toppings. Then there’s English style fish and chips, coated in beer batter, a house speciality. Though Nikita’s emphasis is on seafood and international dishes, there is an impressive range of authentic Thai dishes. We finish in style with a slab of hot, dark chocolate mousse and a scoop of fragrant ice-cream. A sensational and contrasting mix of flavours, textures and temperatures. Salmon Sherry by Paresa Dining Ingredients 160g salmon fillet skin on | 30ml Tio Pepe sherry wine | 150g fresh spinach leaves | 30ml extra virgin olive oil | 80ml whipping cream | 10 saffron stems | ½ peeled clove of garlic | 30g Italian parsley leaves | 40ml sunflower oil | 80ml whole milk | 8 bread croutons | salt & white pepper Method Seal the salmon, the sherry and a pinch of salt in a vacuum bag and cook it for 20 minutes at 50˚C in an immersion cooking bath. Make a garlic and parsley lactonese with a hand blender, introducing first the sunflower oil, half the milk, the garlic and the parsley. Once everything is blended, then slowly start adding the rest of the sunflower oil and salt to taste. For the creamy saffron sauce, toast the saffron in a pan with a splash of extra virgin olive oil and add the whipping cream; let cook slowly for 5 minutes until it’s reduced to creamy sauce texture and add a pinch of salt. Pan fry the spinach with the remaining extra virgin olive oil and a pinch of salt and white pepper. Place the spinach at the centre of the plate surrounded by the saffron sauce and the green alioli spots and top it with the bread croutons. Strain the salmon from the vacuum bag, dry it with an absorbent paper and torch it with a gas blowtorch on the flesh meat side, then turn it and set it up at on top of the spinach and remove the skin and torch the back.

A large portion of Trangâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s population is made up of the descendents of Chinese immigrants who came to Thailand in the 18th century and all around town you will see traces of this cultural legacy; a dim sum restaurant here, a traditional Chinese medicine shop there. Traditional Chinese coffee shops, or raan kopi as they are known locally, are great places to soak in the local culture and Yu Chiang is an especially atmospheric example. The place is owned by a family of Chinese descent and locals sit around marbletopped tables with hot cups of tea or kafae boran, strongly roasted robusta coffee which is sweetened with condensed milk.

West of Trang town youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll find Pak Meng Beach, which is a long stretch of practically untouched strand. Unlike many of the beaches in popular tourist destinations like Phuket and Samui, Pak Meng beach is almost deserted. Bar a few shacks along the beach road selling freshly caught seafood and colourful sarongs, you are likely to have the whole place to yourself. Renting a tuk tuk from Trang to Pak Meng is easy and affordable.

From Trang, head southeast to southern Thailandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s largest city, Hat Yai. Like Trang, Hat Yai most commonly finds itself on travellersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; itineraries as a transit to nearby locations but for those willing to spend a few days there, the town has excellent southern food and a great night market. Hat Yai is known for its fried chicken and a good place to try this regional speciality is Gai Tod Decha. Owned by a Muslim family, the restaurant masters the art of making crispy yet not dry chicken, which is served on khao mok, fragrant rice spiced with cardamom, turmeric, cloves, garlic and coriander seeds. The dish comes with a slightly sweet chilli sauce, sliced cucumber and a generous sprinkle of deepfried shallots.

Just a short drive from Hat Yai is one of the most charming towns of southern Thailand, Songkhla. Initially a part of the Malay kingdom, Songkhla used to be a trading port where Indian, Persian and Arab merchants came to sell and buy goods and when Chinese immigrants arrived they cemented the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s eclectic nature. Songkhla is divided into its old and new quarters, as well as Samila Beach in the northern part of town where locals hang out on weekends. The area around the old port is especially atmospheric with houses full of patina, old Chinese teahouses and souvenir shops. The newer part of the city is concentrated along Chana Road, which every night around five oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;clock transforms into one of the most bustling night markets in southern Thailand, with a heavy focus on food. fter studying architecture at Kasem Bundit University in Bangkok, a glittering career in the field always beckoned for Khun Attasit Intarachooti. A lasting legacy of those formative years is his continuing friendship with a fellow student who, as consultant, is responsible for much of the fine tuning at Botanica Villas and the other developments masterminded by Khun Attasit. But make no mistake, the over-arching vision behind all these projects is Attasit’s, though his innate modesty precludes his labouring the point at our meeting. He is that rare animal: both an artist with an aesthete’s vision, and a highly successful businessman who not only designs his “secret pool villas”, but funds them as well. Phuket is, he feels, in addition to its charm as an island of exceptional natural beauty, a fecund place in which to work. Bangkok is relatively “cliquey” with limited social mobility: here he feels there is a stronger sense of community with a smaller group of entrepreneurs willing to cooperate with each other.

He does not share the current pessimism about the island’s future, seeing it as “better than Singapore’s” with enormous potential for continued growth and development. That he currently has a number of major projects, including five phases of Botanica Villas, mostly completed, at Layan, plus Grand Sea Through Villas at the other end of the island at Rawai, is testimony to that optimism. But he counsels caution. Success can be dangerous; over confidence as a developer can result in trying to expand too quickly – with disastrous results. And he is rightly concerned about the wrong kind of expansion: high density apartment blocks which ignore environmental concerns.

Failure is not part of Attasit’s vision: already more than 80 per cent of his uniquely designed pool villas have sold. Business is thriving. While we talk beside the pool of an exquisite property already reserved, groups of prospective buyers wander appreciatively around the site. Khun Attasit, a youthful looking 41, comes from a secure home background. Brought up in Hat Yai, his mother was a major influence, a “strong” woman who always insisted that “inside” you must be “very good”, was insistent that her son inherited these sound moral values. As he says, “I try to follow my heart”. His own domestic life is happy and settled; his wife comes from the long-established Thai/Chinese community in Phuket. Together they have two lovely daughters aged nine and five, both studying at Kajonkiet International School. You can be sure that Attasit will instill in them his own values, the same lofty ethical principles that he employs in his business activities. And somehow he finds the time to keep in shape by bicycling; it is entirely typical of the man that, never one to do things by halves, he rode a bicycle from Singapore to Phuket for a charitable cause.

Botanica Villas is an initial development of 28 villas. More are following. Phase five features five-bedroom properties priced at up to 32 million baht. Described by their designer as “modern tropical”, these villas fit gracefully into the Layan landscape. Open plan in concept, our meeting venue combines Balinese and traditional Thai elements with elegant western furnishings. The central pool, beautifully lined with blue-grey natural stone, is flanked by magnificent bedrooms and en-suite bathrooms, lavishly appointed with marble floors, white ceramic tiles, natural stone walls and teak furniture. A symphony in white, gold and grey. On another side is wooden decking and a sunbathing area; we sit and talk beneath a huge overarching eave where one can still relax in Phuket’s balmy air even when rain is falling. High ceilings, concertina glass doors and transom windows give a feeling of airiness and light. An open plan, fully fitted western kitchen abuts the lounge. His budget disburses little on advertising: he believes it is better to spend on superb locations and materials, on build quality and design. For the same reason, he stringently limits his staff numbers. His aim is one of constant improvement: learning from experience, he feels that each project has enabled him to amend and upgrade. In the future, he will assuredly create even more luxurious villas. As a parting shot, I ask Attasit why, surrounded by up-scale resorts, he has never ventured into that market. His reply is succinct. The return on capital with resorts is necessarily slow; selling villas offers the prospect of an immediate recoupment on investment. xpectations amongst clients of service providers have increased in proportion to the depth of technological advancement they receive on a daily basis from Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, e-banking and e-payment services and the like. The legal services industry is currently under scrutiny as to the level to which these services can be replaced by automatic technology and artificial intelligence. It is correct that legal services include a substantial amount of administrative processes that simply require orderly and efficient communications. Just as the agricultural based economies moved to factory and industry in the 18th and 19th century industrial revolution era, tertiary services took over a large proportion of industry in key cities throughout the globe. Now, the new ‘technological era’ is disrupting services and radically changing the expectations of users, consumers – and therefore the behaviour of service providers. Whatever systems, technology and content is used to convey information and services to users, there are fundamental principles when it comes to using legal service providers that ought to be remembered, for the sake of obtaining the actual service bargained for. Automated nothingness carries with it little or no value. I truly believe in automation and artificial intelligence as the inevitable fast approaching future. Whilst we are being assaulted with change, and as it seems the internet becomes populated with interesting and easily accessible almost free material, the pollution

of our physical environment is now emulated in the pollution of our electronic environment – fake news, bad information, misrepresented services and the frequently seen ‘mere puff’ of pre-contract inducement. So, back down to earth from this macro view. What exactly should any legal service provision comprise, regardless of the depth or progression of technological advancement: 1. Reliable interpretation of law There are now computer-based systems that can identify legal precedents, whether binding or otherwise, collate and compress and summarise findings. This can be done more cost effectively and faster than employed paralegals, although the initial technological investment is very high. Whatever provides you with information, it must be reliable enough to use effectively within the levels of risk the user is prepared to accept. Most legal service users expect near-perfection in terms of the interpretation of the law, in the same way many expect absolute answers when seeking medical advice. 2. Ethical awareness The human element of legal services means there are differing standards of ethics, dissimilar consideration given to morals and principles and there are many so-called professionals who bend or break the rules. Regulatory bodies are supposed to oversee such providers, but standards of enforcement vary and, of course, with electronic communications the actual jurisdiction in which providers operate has become blurred.

Empathy & decision making You don’t need to read many science fiction novels to understand that, for the artificial intelligence world, creating empathy in robots and software is going to be tough. Many clients actually want their legal counsel to try and understand their objectives and to focus on their perceived needs. Experienced legal counsel have to emphathise, and then adapt their services to ensure that the client’s objective is met but not to the detriment of the the client’s ‘best interests’. It is clear the role of legal services providers is changing and must change, fast. However, next time you try to print a boarding pass at the automatic self-check in counter, or you try to scan the warped barcode on your grocery item – only to receive an error message – remember that humans are still available to fix problems and oversee your overall objectives. Thailand's most celebrated festival is Songkran – the Thai new year. It starts on April 13 and lasts for between three and ten days, depending on where you’re resident (only three days in Phuket). For most, it’s lots of fun and an excuse to cool off at what is usually the hottest time of the year. However, there’s a deeper significance to Songkran which is rooted in Thai history and beliefs. Here’s a bit of background information; perhaps it will enhance your enjoyment of the event.

The word Songkran is from the Sanskrit ‘Sangkranti’, which means ‘to move upwards’ or ‘to be about to change’. On the eve of the festival, Thais spring clean their homes, symbolically expelling any bad luck from the old year and prepare for good fortune in the new. Food and other contributions are offered to the monks at the temple early on the morning of the 13th, after which there are ceremonial prayers. Water is also poured on the ground, or on the roots of an ancient tree, symbolising a blessing to ancestors.

Forget about getting anywhere on these days without getting soaked, especially if you’re on a motorbike.

Thais who have moved from their home towns always try to return to their families for Songkran and all forms of transport are booked solid. For this reason you should try to avoid travelling before, during or immediately after the holiday, particularly by bus or train. In many towns and villages, a Buddha image is carried in a procession through the streets and people sprinkle water upon it, to show their respect. In the southern provinces, village elders are invited to the temple and young people splash water on their heads, signaling their blessings for good health and long life. The elders respond by wishing the young vigour, wealth and happiness. In another delightful custom, Thais visit their elderly relatives bringing them new clothes for the coming year.

Increasingly, though, urban Thais have come to celebrate the holiday in a frenzy of water-throwing. Nobody is immune. One of my fondest memories of Songkran is of an immaculately uniformed policeman (theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re normally very big on dignity) smiling good-naturedly as he emptied water from his highly polished boots. Unfortunately these high jinks can sometimes get out of hand. Motorised gangs with high pressure water cannons, iced water and lots of enthusiasm, get each other (and anybody else) wet, in running battles through the streets. But speeding traffic, wet roads and alcoholic bravado make for a dangerous cocktail. In the recent past, the holidays have been marred by tragic loss of life and injury so, inevitably, the authorities have moved in to safeguard life and limb. Thailandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s New Year celebration is a wet and wild event throughout the country, but the Phuket version is the most international, and perhaps the most boisterous, of all.

Tourists, expats and Thais alike arm themselves to the teeth with water guns, powder and buckets and let loose for three days of heavy dousing (and, it must be said, some heavy drinking too). Water battles take place along all the main roads throughout the island, and pick-up trucks turn into roving water-war vehicles overloaded with people who splash everyone they pass by as they cruise the soggy streets. Patong is host to the most frenzied Songkran celebrations, while Phuket City comes in at a close second. In addition to days of street parties, there are a number of traditional activities to join as well. At the time of writing the full schedule of events had not yet been finalised, but probable activities include a merit-making ceremony at Queen Sirikit Park in Phuket City on the morning of April 13 and festivities at Saphan Hin Park on each day of Songkran from 9am to 6pm. More sacred aspects of the festival that can be seen around the island include processions of Buddha images and ceremonies to pay homage to elders with scented lustral water.

have always enjoyed wine. OK, in my student days, I downed, in common with my peers, countless pints of bitter. Pissed most Saturday evenings. But bitter beer, the top-fermented, hoppy stuff which finishes maturing in the pub cellar, was virtually unobtainable in Phuket. One micro-brewery in Phuket Town had tried and failed. In any case the local bottled beer, which was in essence lager – Chang, Leo and Singha – now made me feel dehydrated, made me pee too much and gave me gout.

Wine, not ale, was therefore “the stuff to drink – for fellows whom it hurts to think”. The only trouble was the byzantine restrictions on the stuff. I had done some research on the subject for The Bangkok Post and found it to be a sore point indeed. The piece had really set the cat among the pigeons: disgruntled ‘expat’ wine merchants from Bangkok bombarded me with emails complaining about government sanctions. It was another case of Thailand shooting itself in the foot. The nub of my research uncovered the following facts: Thailand, whose climate is fundamentally too hot and humid for grape vines, produces only a limited amount of premium wine. None in Phuket at all. Wineries such as Chateau de Loei, Monsoon Valley and especially Gran Monte all produce good quality vino, but do not make nearly enough to satisfy demand. But the problem, one that puts it beyond the budget of most people, is that imported wine is saddled with punitive duties. Indeed one retailer’s expert assessment, taking everything into account, was that there was over 700 baht tax on a bottle of imported wine sold for 1,000 baht. Mind you, when I had first set foot in Phuket, even the ‘plonk’ in bars was not only pricey, but often undrinkable. Why? Because, mostly imported from Italy, it came in 2.5 or 3 litre bottles which, once opened, often stayed in the bar for weeks on end. As everyone knows, once air gets at wine, particularly in Thailand’s high temperatures, it oxidizes, rapidly deteriorates and after three or four days, becomes undrinkable. Vinegar! But help was at hand. Providentially, the Australian invention of the wine box not only reduced transport costs worldwide, but allowed wine to stay fresh for up to six weeks. The ‘bag in a box’ with its polyethylene, metalized bladder and air-locked tap, began to signal a revolution in Phuket’s bar culture. I had turned myself into a right bore by going round all the local pubs and explaining the advantages of boxed wine. Even my drinking buddies got bored. “Come on, Henry. Not that stuff again about boxes and blue and orange customs labels,” would come the exasperated response. “Just drink the bloody stuff.” The boxed wine was not the only thing that was making a difference. Thai ingenuity has a way of getting round problems, particularly of a financial nature. The new container wine was certainly much cheaper – on account

of its bulk and lightweight packaging – but the biggest difference in price came with the stealthy appearance of ‘fruit wine’. And the first kid on the ‘fruit wine’ block was a product called Mont Clair. Sounded classy. But where did it come from? According to the label, from “Breede River Valley, South Africa. Our winemakers have selected cabernet grapes from South Africa to blend and create a wine for your everyday involvement” states the web site. What it does not say, however, is where the fermentation actually takes place. Nor does it say what other ingredients have gone into the mix, though the words “fruit wine”are there – in smaller letters. In fact, the producer is Siam Winery, a massive Bangkok enterprise with the industrial scale capacity to make “one million units a day”. Fruit wine allows native fruit juice, mellow tasting and readily available, to be blended in Thailand with imported grape juice or concentrate. There are two tangible benefits for the producer and bar owner. One is a quaffable and less tannin-rich wine, a concoction more amenable to a local palate that craves sweeter beverages. One bar in Rawai stopped buying Mont Clair and went for something a bit more up-market. Within weeks, customers were demanding the return of their favourite tipple. Fruitiness, it appears, is here to stay… Just as the world has habituated itself to the syrupy delights of Coca-Cola, so Thailand’s ‘winos’ have developed a taste for Mont Clair. But more importantly, ‘fruit wine’ is not only cheaper to produce, but avoids some of the most punitive imposts by calling itself “fruit wine.” In Thailand there is no obligation to declare what’s in a bottle of vino, but nonetheless some of these home-made blends are now doing so. Nadin, for instance, comes in a classy looking bottle. Remove the attractive packaging and at the bottom of the back label in small print is the narrative: “Imported Australian wine and selected roselle,” a reference to a native species of hibiscus whose dried fruits and flowers are made into a traditional, bright red Thai drink. The whole culture of boxed ‘fruit wine’ is now very much part of the scene. Overseas vinifiers, especially in Australia, have joined in the fun: they are now making and exporting ‘fruit wine’, mostly in boxes, in increasing quantities. While the main ingredient is the grape, whether they are actually adding other fruit to the fermentation process is not entirely clear. Yet in a country which insists that its wine-makers declare added ingredients such as sulphites, eggs or milk, and where consumer laws demand stringent laboratory analysis, there is rarely any specific mention of added fruit. So I make a point of buying, as standard house ‘plonk’, imported

box wine – usually from Oz – in the belief that, while it might call itself ‘fruit wine’ to avoid import duties, it might still be fashioned exclusively from one variety of fruit – vitis vinifera. After all, there is no mention on a box of Cedar Creek or Castle Creek or Gossips, all of which originate in Australia, of adulteration with fruit other than grapes. It is just ‘fruit wine’. And I reckon it tastes better anyway. But in common with so many aspects of Thai life, the picture will always be blurred. Just to take one further example – the use of orange and blue customs seals. Blue seals are a guarantee that the wine is not made in Thailand, that it is imported. OK. Belleville, for example is boldly identified as an Australian wine and carries a blue customs seal. But this wine owes its respected blue tag not to antipodean manufacture, but to the fact that, like its competitor Avalon, it is actually rustled up in Vietnam. Imported? Yes, But only from across the border. The grapes, or more likely the juice, may be Australian. The finished product is Vietnamese…. Ged it? Less tax….And, as an imported wine, more market clout. Both producers and retailers have caught on fast. If I visit my local supermarket, I can find at least ten examples, mostly boxed, of – yes you’ve guessed it – ‘fruit wine’. The expensive bottles of ‘genuine’ wine”from respected Chilean, Australian, French, Italian or Spanish wineries, sit forlornly on the shelves, taxed to the hilt, and beyond the pocket of most wine-bibbers. As for the local bars, they are still fixated on Mont Clair. Cheap and cheerful. Nothing is going to change that.

Oddly, only premium imported wine is so ferociously taxed in Thailand. So why bother? Only two per cent of the population are regular wine drinkers anyway, despite the fact that his Royal Highness the late King was advised by his doctors, for health reasons, to drink a couple of glasses a day. Most of the local population, and especially in Isaan, drink Lao Khao because it attracts little tax, and is consequently very cheap. A white spirit, it is sold in two strengths and is probably responsible for most of the heavy drinking in the kingdom. It only costs about 70 baht for an ale-sized bottle, is distilled from rice beer, and has an alcohol content of at least 35 per cent. Locally distilled ‘moonshine’ is even cheaper. Other inexpensive alternatives are Mehkong whisky actually a rum made from local sugar cane and Saeng Som also distilled from sugar cane. Yaa dong is a Thai herbal whisky which, for my sins, I used to drink in Karon from a tiny stall. It was red, tasted herby, and was apparently infused with an organic mix of leaves, bark or roots. I shudder to think what actually went into the concoction. I survive to tell the tale. While lager is becoming more and more popular, it tends to be mostly consumed in the touristy regions such as Phuket and Pattaya, where it is the favoured tipple of expats. Apart from gracing the dining tables of top resorts and restaurants on the island, fine wine will remain a connoisseur’s tipple.
